You are right that we have little on the Canadian branches of the WHITNEY families.
We have a collective database which can be found at the following URL:
<http://www.rootsweb.com/~gumby/genweb/Whitney/Whitney.html>
This includes some of the descendants of Henry-1 WHITNEY, mainly the first six generations. We would be very happy to have your data added. Contact Jeanne Muse <[email protected]> and she will see to the integration of your database into our own. Any part of your data which you see fit to share can be included.

Anna Kay,
While I do not have any helpful information about schools, I do have the ancestry of Mary (WHITNEY) WOODBRIDGE. She was b. 10 Sep 1731, Watertown, MA, daughter of Daniel-4 and Dorothy (TAINTER) WHITNEY (Benjamin-3, John-2, John-1). Her birth and the marriage are both recorded in _Watertown Records_, the birth at 3:116 and the marriage at 3:147. In the marriage record, she is called "of Watertown" and he "of South Hadley". Proof of her identity can be found in the probate of the estates of each of her parents.
I have much more detail about her ancestors and other relatives. You can find some of it at <http://www.erols.com/rlward1/whitney/john/num122.html#506>.
On the other hand, I know nothing of her husband, his parentage, birth, death, or her death, or anything of their children.

Robert

returned to the Southland, to Dyer County, Tennessee.after his Army discharge, Charley met and married Sarah Parlie(spelling?) Flowers (b. abt 1856 in Tennessee to Isaac J. and Babe Nichols Flowers, d. Sept. 23, 1923). Charley and Sarah were married April 16, 1871, by William H. His pension application also mentions a gunshot wound to the foot received during his military service. At the time of his initial pension application, Charley is described as 5' 9 3/4", 170 pounds, blue eyes, gray hair, light complexion, and was a farmer. His application was rejected on the ground that "a pensionable degree of disability from the alleged gunshot wound of
head" was not shown.1908, Charley again filed for a pension, claiming the same disability. He was suffering from rheumatism, a kidney disorder, and failing eyesight.
His claim was again rejected.Whitney remained in Tennemo, Dyer County, Tennessee, until his death in 1910 from pneumonia. His last attending physician was a Dr.

She said she would be "obliged to you for your kindness." Also, she states that her husband's papers were "lost...last spring in the back water, and also our stock."
Her letter makes reference to an earlier letter she had written. Neither
letter appears to have been answered.1913, Sarah Whitney, then living in Lenox, Tennessee, applied once more for a widow's pension from the Army under the provision of the Act approved April 19, 1908. This Act, however, provided pensions only for soldiers (and widows) who served during the War for Southern Independence. By February, 1914,

I am happy to report to Ty Alexander that his line comes down from Peter Whitney of Markham and Scott Townships, Ontario, Canada.
Peter Whitney 1783- son of John Whitney U.E. 1746- married Mary Lamont who was born in Ontario, Canada. Family: -Lamont Whitney married in 1833 Mary Kile -Anna Whitney 1818-1908 married Thomas S. Note that John Whitney, Peter's father, was apparently United Empire
Loyalist.
The above was given to me about 12 years ago by a researcher who was
locating information for a descendent of John Whitney (son of Peter).
The Boden, VanHorn and Jones families stayed in the Uxbridge, Ontario area. I have never seen any evidence of Lamont Whitney coming to the
Uxbridge-Scott area. Peter came from Markham Twp. to Scott Twp. north of Uxbridge in the 1850's.

While we're on the subject of Canadian Whitneys, I would like to toss
another one into the mix to see what comes up.
Sir James Pliny Whitney, born Oct. 2, 1843, at Williamsburg in Eastern
Ontario, died in Toronto, Sept. 25, 1914, son of Richard L. Whitney and Clarissa Jane Fairman. Premier of Ontario, Canada, from 1905-14. In 1877, he married Alice Park of Cornwall, Ont. They had a son and a daughter.
He was a Conservative in politics. No known relation to my wife, but we just wonder where he fits in to

No known relation to my wife, but we just wonder where he fits in to
the Whitney clan.

Does anyone have information about Whitney's in Maine who mught be able to
assist in locating Margaret? My infomation is below.
Margaret Whitney was the second wife (first Mary Baker) of Ebenezer Beal of Bowdoinham. She married Ebenezer abt 1825, so she was probably born about 1800. I am looking for Margaret. There are several Whitney families in the Lincoln and Penobscot county censuses in this period. If you don't know Margaret, I would appreciate it if anyone can say that Margaret was not part of any of those families, and why.
I am in Texas and unable to get to Maine to do local research.

Hello Fellow Genealogist!
I am starting my own family tree on the web and was wondering if you could give me any advice. I skimmed your email from the GENDEX directory after performing a search for the Moran Surname. I am already some-what familiar and comfortable with the GENDEX program and have started a genealogy web page at http://bitsmart.com/moranclan. Additionally, I have brought many Morans together at the PlanetAll.com website in a group I named "Moran, the Surname". I have just a few questions / requests:
Would you mind forwarding the Moran portion of your GEDCOM to me? Or do you feel that this would not be helpful to me?
Did you have people send you information threw the web? If so, how did you explain to them what format to put it in so that you could put it in to GENDEX easily?
Do you have any advice concerning the use of GENDEX or GEDCOM?
What advice would you give to one who has A LOT of web and programming skills but no genealogy skills?
Looking forward to your help and advice,
Sean Patrick Ocheese Moran

Dear Tim,
RE your e mail concerning Census Indexes:
When I load your address http://www.outburst.com/whitney/ on my Mac it opens
up right away. When I then try to open up one of the individual items, the Heading, such as "Whitney 1850 Census" comes on and it shows down below loading the 50 MBs. As soon as the latter is finished, nothing else come on and the computer locks up. Then the only way I can get back is to turn it off and restart. I have tried several individuals such as 1840 NY, 1850 Ill. etc., and it does the same thing. I have never had this happen on any other Internet address I have used. The internal headings on them open right away. Do you have any suggestions why this is happening and a solution? I use the AOL Browser, which I have used for months. Ray Whitney, Topeka, Kansas.

I'll take a look at this tonight. My thoughts are that perhaps the tables are too large for your browsers to handle or that perhaps the number of table columns is not matching the number of table headings. I'll create a few test files and work with Ray and/or Janice to work out a solution. Once we have corrected the problem, I'll be sure to inform the group.

Hello out there,
I have been reading every Whitney E-Mail that comes my way hoping to run
across something that rings a bell, but I have found nothing yet. I am desperately searching for Whitneys from Monroe,Belmont,Columbiana Counties of Ohio. My grandmothers name was Dorothy Florence Whitney, she had several sisters, Juanita, Ida, Bessie, Naomi,Mary. My grandmother was born in Barnesville, Ohio in Belmont county. Her father was George Whitney and was married to a Julia Racheal Gatchell. George had several brothers. His father's name was Enoch Whitney. I don't know where he was from, but George was born I do believe in Sisterville, Wv, but then grew up in Monroe or Belmont Co. I know little about Enoch Whitney and there is where I seem to be stuck, So I am pleading. If any of this information rings a bell, Please let me know. I am up against a brick wall and very frustrated.

I believe that this was Mercy-6 WHITNEY, b. 10 Sep 1771, Conway, Franklin Co., MA, daughter of David-5 and Rachel (RAWSON) WHITNEY [Jonathan-4, Jonathan-3, Benjamin-2, John-1]. For her earlier ancestry, see <http://www.erols.com/rlward1/whitney/john/num274.html#972> and pages linked from there. The marriage was recorded on 29 Feb 1796 in Conway, MA.

Subject: Can We Help Rootsweb - strictly voluntary!!
Dear WRG:
I got this today from another maillist, and think it worthy of being passed on. I know that Randy has also mentioned the possibility of these kinds of contributions or of "joining" the rootsweb cooperative before as well. One of the other messages I recently got on the subject said that Dr. Brian Leversich, who does all the rootsweb stuff as his contribution to the genealogical community, (just like Larry Stephens at Indiana University did and still does) had to borrow a 4-wheel drive vehicle to get through the floods to Bakersfield (CA, I assume) to buy a generator to keep the server computers going during all the power outages he was experiencing because of the Pacific storms.
>>Due to heavy winter storms and power failures a large portion of rootsweb has been down intermittantly, new generators were purchased and installed.
The system is constantly being upgraded, at great expense, Sponsorship and membership in the rootsweb cooperative is the only source of funding to keep this system viable.
www.rootsweb.com is the home page for the system, if you would like to contribute to rootsweb, donations are gratefully accepted, as well as membership and sponsorship. Not to try to convince anyone that the donations are required, as the goal of rootsweb has always been to provide FREE access to genealogy resources without concern of "financial" responsibility such as fees and dues.
Rootsweb is the silent partner in thousands of genealogy sites, such as the USGenWeb project, and with cooperation from several genealogic systems is instumental in promoting the fast growth of the Hobby.
Web based genealogy would NOT be what it is without organizations such as Rootsweb.
Please help Rootsweb make the expenses less of a burdon, contribute today.<<

WRG - had to go with my wife to her Library today, while she did some necessary things (she's been out with a physical problem all week), and spent the time looking up odd Whitney things in sources I hadn't ever checked before, like the 3-volume compendium of Irish Genealogy. Found some stuff that I will transcribe either later tonight or tomorrow and send along.
Hope everyone is surviving all the weather related difficulties. Welcome back, Jon!!
Happy Hunting :-)

Dear Jerry:
I found her in Whitny12, born 6 Sep 1793 in Gilsum, NH, d.o. Samuel and Mary (Whitney) Whitney, m. to James Locke on 18 May 1873 (which has to be a mistranscription for 1813) in Gilsum, NH. If you don't have this version of Whitny12, I'll be glad to create a GEDCOM from her back upwards and send it to you.
As to that, thanks for the files on Stephen Whitney and Persis Locke. I haven't had time to work with them yet, but will be happy to have the chance to place him.

Subject: Re: Lydia WHITNEY and James LOCKE
Dear Donna:
That's the trouble with us "old-timers" - we tend to think everyone else has been around as long as we have. To answer your question, Whitny12 is the 12th version of the collective database on the descendants of John and Elinor Whitney (arrived Watertown, MA, in 1635), the immigrant ancestors for what is probably the largest sub-group within the Whitney Reseach Group (that is, all of us on the Whitney-L maillist). At last count, it was pushing 9000 names and probably is over that now or will be soon. There is also a similar database for the descendants of Henry Whitney of Southold, LI and Norwalk, CT, maintained by Jeanne Muse, although that one isn't as big.
This database is essentially what has also been made available on Randy Winch's website. It is kept by Jon Aston ([email protected]), our long-suffering and ever-patient compiler, who has just rejoined us after being off for a vacation. It is available in a GEDCOM format from Jon, who runs FTW as his program, which can export in several types of file formats. For those who use PAF3, I've got it as a compressed backup file that is much smaller and easier to send through the file attachment process.
I know Jon has been collecting additions since Whitny12 was "published" for the benefit of everyone who wanted it, back sometime last summer. He will probably follow up this note with some information about the probability of the emergence of Whitny13. Before he does that, I hope he asks for new materials, as I have made wholesale additions to my copy of 12 as the year has progressed and new materials have come to light. I have also been trying to add to its accuracy by making corrections and adjustments based on the extremely well documented work of Robert Ward as I work my way through his invaluable five - generation descent of John and Elinor. Jon, it probably will be a major match/merge problem for you when I send it on, but I couldn't see how to do it and keep it all separate.
Do you want the whole database for yourself to put it on your own computer? That's up to you - I keep my "group" database entirely separate from my own personal database, although there is a portion of my own in the group version, just not the stuff that is not Whitney material. Then, when I have a problem, I use the group database to solve it and to answer questions.
Donna, I hope that this clears up the matter for you. Let me know if I can help in any other way.
Allan
P.S. to Jerry Harrison: I read your note after completing this one. Let me know if you want the PAF3 version. If you want the FTW or generic GEDCOM version, drop Jon Aston a note and he'll send it to you.

Subject: WHITNEY Connecticut Vital Records
Dear Friends and Colleagues of the WRG,
I have just completed uploading the first part (A-Eliza) of the card index to the Barbour Collection of Connecticut vital records for the surname WHITNEY. This index is a state-wide combined index of the vital records of all towns in Connecticut, covering all events before 1850, and some after. You can examine it at <http://www.erols.com/rlward1/whitney/conn/bbrindex.html>. As I get time and energy, I will transcribe the rest and post it for your perusal and use.
If anyone finds typographical or other errors, please contact me so that I can correct them.
Once this is finished, I will be attempting to do the same to the state-wide index to Connecticut church records, and then the state-wide index of the Hale Collection of Connecticut tombstone inscriptions and newspaper death notices. Finally, there is an index to the collection of Bible records for the state of Connecticut which could also be transcribed. All these records are available at the LDS Family History Centers on microfilm.
I would be glad to get some assistance with these tasks. If anyone wants to help, please write.
Regards,
Robert

Hello everybody! I have an apology to make. Everyone has probably noticed my lack of participation lately, and I want to give an explanation & beg your forgiveness. Other things in my life have taken the front seat ... meaning that genealogy as a whole is in the ~far~ back seat.
To make a long story shorter, I sold my business which we have owned and operated for 18 years -- and started a new business, which is being run from our home. Months of preparation and training the new owners so that we could walk out the door is finally completed. Working both jobs (the old & the new) was tiring and trying, but now as of Feb. 1 we have been cut loose! But, with the new business came new challenges...(i.e. organizing the office & production area, learning new computer software, etc. etc.)
With our new business we may have the opportunity to travel (!) to parts of the country we've never visited -- but that will mean the probability of being out of touch with the group for several weeks at a time. Since I've never had more than 1 week of vacation at a time in my working life, being able to take off for even 2 weeks seems like heaven.
And, Allan, my old company (The Awards Center) will still be able to provide any trophies that you need! The new owners are, in fact, the employees who have been working with me for many, many years.
I'll contribute when I can, especially about the Henry of Connecticut database.

Hello cousins and fellow Whitney watchers, As you know, I am not on the mailing list at this time. Yeah, one of the pioneers has dropped out again due to technical difficulties. Just wanted to tell you all how much I have learned from all of you great researchers. You are always out there ready to help someone find a lost link. Joan Hicks found my Henry 1620 of CT and Jeanne and the rest have taken the file and run with it. Not to say that Allan, Arv, and Jon are not the best guys in the world. I really have had fun corresponding with all of you and glad I have met such great cousins. Was good to meet some of you in person and I hope to meet more of you in the days to come. From the bottom of my heart I thank you for finding my daddy's family for me. Like I have said before, I am probably one of those "daddy's girls" and Allan sounds a lot like my dad. It is uncanny how we can all be such a great family. In all my correspondence on the net, I have never met a more empathetic group than this one. My daddy would have loved you all, and of course Grandma Nellie would have been just as gracious to you all as you have been to me. I don't know why I am so sentimental today, guess it is because we have just come thru the biggest storms of the century and I am thanking God for my blessings. You all happen to be on that list. Sorry if I sound too mushy for some of you but this is how I feel and wanted to put it into words today. Please do not loose touch with me, I am still a Whitney booster and I will praise you all till the day I die.
Love you cousins, MAL

Subject: A Whitney query - Is anyone familiar with this family?
"The History of Chesterfield" by Oran E. Randall, 1882(Cheshire Co. NH) mentions Daniel and Eunice Whitney as having four children, Adolphus, b. Dec. 13, 1782, d. 1785; George, b. Jan 11, 1785; Vashni b. June 3, 1788; and Calvin, b. Aug 23, 1790. It says the name is not found after 1794.
Is anyone familiar with this family? Was there another Adolphus born to these parents?

The vital records of Douglas, MA, show the marriage of Daniel WHITNEY "of Chesterfield" and Eunice MARSH [of Douglas] on 3 Jan 1782. This is surely the above couple.
Possibly this was Daniel-5 WHITNEY, b. 12 Apr 1761, Dunstable, MA, son of Sylvanus-4 and Hannah (-----) WHTINEY [Joseph-3, Jonathan-2, John-1]. Possibly this was Daniel-5 WHITNEY, b. 22 Dec 1758, Chelmsford, MA, son of Daniel-4 and Hannah (HILDRETH) WHITNEY [Joseph-3, Jonathan-2, John-1]. Probably there are other possibilities I haven't noted.

Hi,
The only Aldolphus WHitney listed in Pierce is Adolphus Dewing Whitney, born in St. Armand, Province of Quebec on Oct 15, 1855. He was married at East Franklin VT Oct 20, 1875 to Maria M. Colcord. I have found my gr-gr grandparents, Nathan and Abigail Whitny burried in a little cemetery in Franklin, VT. My gr-grandfather, Edward Whitney, also was born in St. Armand. I went there and it is a dinky little town with nothing in the way of medical facilities. It is just across the border from Franklin, VT. I can not figure out why these Whitneys from Franklin were born in St. Armand, Canada. Maybe the Sunday ride in a buggy got bumpy. Pierce indicates that my gr-gr- grandfather lived in St. Armand as a farmer for a period before moving back to the states. If that is also the case with Adolphus, that is quite a bit of movement in the middle of nowhere for the Whitney clan. The ideal way to solve the puzzle would be to find St. ARmand maps for the early 19th century.
Hope this is useful.
Best regards, Jim Whitney

Hello
I am looking for information on Joel Whitney, probably born about 1740-1755 in/or around Littleton, NH.
Joel Whitney is the father of another Joel Whitney, who was the father of Abigail Whitney, who married my gr gr gr grandfather John Maynard, son of Edward Maynard of Addlebury, England.
Joel was in the militia during the Revolutionary War, for at least a two week period. He marched with others to meet the British at Fort Ticonderoga, but when I don't know, but family tradition says that when they got there, the British were gone, so they marched home again.
If there is any information out there on this man, I would appreciate a response.
I am also descended from Joyce Whitney and Hiram L. Merrick. Joyce is the daughter of Jeremiah, son of Jeremiah, son of Jeremiah, son of Nathan, son of John, son of Henry Whitney, of Norwalk, CT.
Thanks.

Subject: Samuel Whitney Sr.
I have some questions about the family of Samuel Whitney Sr. of
Brunswick, Me. (in the mid 1700's).
F.C. Pierce lists 5 children for Samuel Sr. and Lydia: Samuel Jr. b. Sept. 15, 1732- Jonathan b. Dec. 21, 1734- Lydia b. Feb. 20, 1735- Susannah b. Jul. 25, 1738- Lettis b. Jun. 27, 1742-
Dr. L.M. Harris said in his book "A Branch of the Whitney Family" (1858)
that Samuel Sr. had six children. There has been speculation that the sixth child was Ebenezer Whitney born c1745 who went to New Brunswick. And there are questions as to why there is only a record of Samuel's first five children and not of the sixth child.
On Dec. 4, 1751, Samuel Whitney Sr. signed and presented a memorial
about a recent Indian raid to "His Majestys Council & House of Representatives in General Court". One paragraph of the memorial says, "Your memorialists son yet remaining in Captivity among the Indians with three more that were taken at ye same time, and he has a wife and 8 children under difficult circumstances by reason of this misfortune".
The memorialist was Samuel Whitney Sr., and the son was Samuel Whitney
Jr. who was then about 19 years old. Throughout the memorial, Samuel Sr.refered to himself as "he". He said "he" had a wife and 8 children.
As this is from a primary document, and if it was copied correctly,
then Samuel Sr. had 8 children instead of 5 or 6. He gave the memorial and he certainly would have known how many children he had.
One can even speculate that he had a wife and 8 children under
difficult circumstances, and that another son, Samuel Jr., was still with the Indians - making 9 children in total. That may be stretching it a little.
Were the additional 3 children all born after 1842? Has anyone seen a
record of them? What became of them? Since the other 5 were Baptised, and he was a church deacon, he almost certainly would have had the additonal 3 Baptised. At the same church or at another location? Any clues are welcome.

Dear Martin:
I have looked, but have not come up with anything thus far. You indicate that some of the information came from Pierce. Do you have a copy - or access to one in a nearby library? If not, Jon Aston ([email protected]), owns a copy, and might respond to an individual query. He has been gone a month on an extended vacation, and may be temporarily snowed under with work, but has always been helpful in the past when asked. I also own the Pierce, but only in microfilm form, and don't have a reader. If necessary, I can take it to school and use the reader there.
Our problem is that we need the kind of coverage of ME Vital Records that we have managed to achieve for the MA ones. If you knew where all of the collected and published ME VR's were kept, and could manage to get Xeroxes of the pages with Whitney entries, I'm sure we could find some of the same volunteers who did the MA VR's to transcribe them - I know I did 10 or 12 towns myself, after Jan Whitaker and Peg Sanborn mailed me the xeroxed pages, and we managed to do nearly 150 MA towns in a few short months.
Keep your hopes up - this is a good bunch of folks in the Whitney Research Group, and we seem to be getting more and more people like yourself, who are interested in ME Whitneys.

There is a Joel Whitney, b. 21 May 1743 in York, ME, son of Abel and Mary (Cane) Whitney. He was married to a Mary Weston on 26 Sep 1765, and died in Jonesboro, ME in 1789. There is nothing else in the database on him.
I have checked all our other Joel Whitneys, without finding anything that would help. I also checked for any and all Maynards, but found no connection. Have you had access to the Pierce Whitney Genealogy book? Do you have any other information for the descendants of your earliest Joel Whitney like wives, dates, places, etc.? Could you tell us what other sources you have used or ruled out as not productive, so in trying to help you we don't retrace steps you have already undertaken.
We'll keep trying, but perhaps need a little more to go on.
All best wishes.

Dear WRG:
Would someone who has access to the original VR book for Newton, MA, please check the data on the Marriage of a Mary Whitney to an Edward Richards on 20 Mar 1766. Our transcriptions (both the ones I "printed" and the same one on Robert Ward's website) both say that Mary was "of Cambridge" and Edward Richards (seemingly) was of Newton. Frankly, it makes more sense the other way around, as there is a Mary Whitney, b. 1745, for whom no marriage record can be found, and she would be a nice handy 21 years old if she is actually the one in this marriage.
Thanks.

Dear WRG - We've found our Adolphus Whitney's death certificate. He is NOT the son of Daniel Whitney & Eunice Marsh, which we had asked about last week. This is the info stated on the record. p. 1349 Adolphus Whitney d. 14 Dec 1869, Hartland, VT age 83yrs 4 mo. 3 days, died of double pneumonia so this places his birth date as 11 Aug 1786 p.o.b. Westminster, VT.
Father was B. Whitney.
Kathy Lisai, a Westminster look-up stated that the Whitney family was sort of a mystery in Westminster. Benjamin Whitney, she says was the original Whitney in Westminster. She suspects he may have come from Fitzwilliam, NH.
Rachael Duffalo has e-mailed me with some data which I've lost (my little box here eats things once in a while-time for an upgrade?) Rachael, I'd love to compare some notes based on my new info.
Other census records we've found, all 1850 (my sister Diana, [email protected] has the copies, so I can't give exact reference yet)
Whitehall, NY
Adaline (BALCH) Whitney 28, VT Thomas Massey 27, M, Farmer, NY Sarah Massey 37 or 27?, F., VT - (We believe this is Sarah Balch, Adaline's sister) Frederick WHITNEY 7, M, VT Louisa Whitney 2, F, VT Daniel Balch, 37 M. (Adaline's brother) George Whitney 9/12 (9 mos?). M, VT
also
1850 Woodstock, Franklin Co., VT Dwelling 265 Family 265 Edward Whitney 33 M, Farmer Isaac Bayley 29 M, Farmer (possibly Bagley) Sophiana (or Tophiana?), 31, F., (Rachel, this name is similar to a name you mentioned in your message to me) George A. Bayley 9, M William Bayley 21?
Can anyone help us piece this together? Was Benjamin Whitney Adolphus's father? Is this Edward Whitney Adaline's husband? Any chance someone has a copy of the 1860 census records with these families? Our ggrandfather, William Melville Whitney, was b. 1857. This would help complete the picture a bit more.
Happy Valentine's Day to all.

One might guess that Benjamin died between 1810 and 1820, leaving widow Jerusha and sons Alden and Leland.
I do not know the ancestry of this Benjamin of Westminster, b. before 1755. He might be a son of Benjamin-5 and Esther (LELAND) WHITNEY [James-4, John-3, Jonathan-2, John-1], m. 18 Apr 1751, Sherborn, MA. That would account for naming a son Leland WHITNEY. If his wife was Jerusha ALDEN, that would account for naming a son Alden WHITNEY. Of course everything in the last two paragraphs is pure speculation!
I also know very little about the Fitzwilliam, Cheshire Co., NH, WHITNEY families. Any help on either would be gratefully received.

Ok folks - I've gotten more.
This info is from the GMW page. For those of you not familiar, I wasn't until this morning that's Genealogy's Most Wanted.
Whitney, Benjamin, b.? d. 20 Nov 1822, Westminster, VT m. Jerusha BROCKWAY (divorced) Cheshire Co, NH then VT.
Children: Parnal m. Thaddeus Bradley, Abigail, Anna m. Jonathan Gould, Benjamin, b. 1772/3 Westminster, to Genesee Co, NY, Alden, ADOLPHUS, Leland, probably others.
I'm a little confused on her notes, but would translate the "to Genesee Co, NY" as Benjamin moved there. Would you agree?
I've e-mailed the source of this posting for more details.
Also, in the GenServ files, I've found Benjamin Whitney with Jerusha Brockway. No details on them, but a very detailed descendancy of Parnal WHITNEY who m. Thaddeus Bradley.

I saw somebody forwarded this ad for the following book that I posted to a "book sellers list". I came across these books from a local person while I was on a quest for a set of reprints for our library. The lady had these for sale but we felt that the originals, though in very good condition, would not hold up in our library under heavy usage. We were able to find a set of reprints with the help of a member of this list (and we thank you Sue) and I have offered to help this lady sell hers since she does not have a computer, etc. I did not want to post to this list since it is not a book sellers list, but since it has been done already and I agree it might help somebody, I will supply the rest of the info if e-mailed.

Subject: Diadama WHITNEY

Hello, WRG,
I am trying to link my great, great grandmother, Diadamia WHITNEY, to the John WHITNEY of MA line. I think she is possibly the youngest daughter of Hezekiah 5 WHITNEY who m. Olive KNIGHT. In the WHITNEY lines the name is spelled Diadama, but I think it may be the same person.
My Diadamia WHITNEY m. James A. THOMAS (1802-1880) Diadamia was b. 1801 and d. 16 Feb 1880 in Hamilton, Caldwell Co., MO.
Reasons FOR this possible connection:
1. She would be only 17 years old in 1818, so would be living with her
parents.
This information is in the Whitney data base:
7. Diadama b. ___________(living with her parents in 1818 as mentioned in
her father's pension affidavit)
2. Her father, Hezekiah b. 1748, would have been 53 when she was born,
but this is quite possible, as she was his last child
Reasons AGAINST this connection:
1. . I don't think the birth date of Olive Knight is known. However, she would be old to be having another child. This is the one factor which makes me doubt this connection. Their marriage was in 1774.
2. Census data says my Diadamia born in NY.
Can you help me? Do you have any further information on Diadama (Diadamia) that would prove or disprove this connection?
Thank you so much for your time.

Subject: Welsh Whitneys?
Hello all,
I'm descended from Whitneys in Wales (maternal GF). I've had a brief look at various Whitney sites, and while it's clear that the name is old I see no reference to Welsh Whitneys. Anybody out there researching them?
I'm not specifically researching this branch myself, since my primary interest is Bebb, and also a related Whitney has spent a lot of time doing it himself. However, he's not computer based, let alone on line. But if there were any possibility of a link into his line, therefore possibly my own, I might take some interest.
Is there a site specifically describing the origin/history of the Whitney name?
Thanks,
Malcolm (In Dorset, England)

Hi again,
Thanks to those who've mailed me so far, I have still to respond there.
I'm basically looking at Whitney at the request of my mother, who of course is half Whitney.
Her father, Edward Abia Whitney had a second family. Gilbert Whitney, from the second family, did some research for an Australian (?) Whitney who wanted it for a book (which he is now apparently seeking to update). I've spoken to Gilbert a couple of times in the past but I'm not really up to date with him. I don't know how far back he was able to go. Edward, a miner, was from a large family of 12 or 13, mostly girls. Edward was probably born 1910-ish (I have some better dates, but not readily to hand.)
My mother's interests are twofold:
1) She would like to find out the origin of the name, at least as far back as is known - somebody mentioned a book? Don't know if it's the same one???
2) Her family come from Blaina in Monmouthshire, at least as far back as Edward's father Walter (born abt 1850 - 1860, but that's very "about!"). She'd like to find out more about them.
Edward is on record as having signed the pledge, a fact logged in the family Bible and undoubtedly the source of great amusement locally. One suspects it was signed on the morning after...
There is talk of a Herefordshire Whitney (period unknown) who took up employment as a Sheriff for the English, thereby becoming branded a traitor to the Welsh cause!!
(BTW, anyone looking for "Llanelly" should probably be looking for "Llanelli" as well :-)
Any of this ring a bell with anyone?
While I'm here, also interested in GOUGH in S.Wales, early 20th Century.
Thanks,
Malcolm

Dear Malcolm:
I'm at the office right now, with all my reference stuff at home, but you need to know that originally the Whitneys were part of the group known as "The Lords Marchers" - whose duty it was to protect Norman England from the depradations of the fierce Welsh. They descend directly from Normans (well, actually Flemings who came along with William for the adventure and the loot) who arrived in 1066. I'll write again, maybe tonight, when I have a little more time and some references.

It is reasonable that the research for the Phoenix record, done a few years prior to 1878, would indicate Prescott and not Johnstown, as by the late 1800' Johnstown was likely a minor suburb of Prescott.
ANY COMMENTS (I am really looking for evidence) ON WHERE THE JOHN WHITNEY AND HIS FAMLY LIVING IN JOHNSTOWN (PRESCOTT) IN 1791, CAME FROM AND THE LIKELIHOOD THAT HE WAS THE JOHN MENTIONED IN THE WHITNEY PHOENIX ENTRY #394 WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED.

Hello Whitney researchers , Im looking for Mantle Whitney. He was b in 1865 in NY,he married Mary Fuller in the late 1880s. Mary was b in Pa , I don't know what year. They had five sons, I believe three were b in Pa and two in NY. I have heard that Mantle remarried and had two more children. That is about all the information have on Mantle Whitney. If anyone has any information I would appreciate it very much. Mary

I am looking for information on the family of Nathan Whitney b. 6 Mar 1723 at Stow, MA and md 22 Jan 1752 and d. at Conway, MA. He married Tabitha Bennett.
I am descended from Ira Whitney b. 1761 of Conway, MA md 6 Jul 1798 in Conway, MA to Rebecca Hannah Hartwell b. 19 Feb 1770 of Conway, MA and d. 13 Nov 1815 in Onondaga Co., NY. Their son Joel is my 3rd great grandfather.
I believe because of the 1790 census record that Nathan Whitney is the father of my Ira. Solomon Hartwell who was the father of my Rebecca was a neighbor to Nathan Whitney. Ira married Jane Bird in Williamsburg, MA and became a widower shortly after that census. I believe that he returned to his parents home and met Rebecca Hartwell whom he married.
Another reason that I feel that Nathan and Tabitha are his parents is because he names a son Nathan and a daughter named Tabitha.
Tabitha Whitney married a Leonard Homer and resided in Port Jervis, NY. She gave the history of her father in a book that I located in the library at Syracuse, NY. I have a copy of the pages that she gave. I have tried to located further information on her and the Orange Co., NY Historical Society will only look up information for a fee and I haven't been able to afford that yet.
Here is the family of Ira Whitney and Rebecca Hartwell:
1. Joel Whitney b. 9 apr 1799 of Conway, MA d. 31 Aug 1867/8 Warren Co., PA, md 30 Aug 1830 Sarah Mead daughter of Joseph Mead and Hannah Boone. (This is my direct line.)
2. Nathan Whitney b. 24 Jul 1803 of Conway, MA d. 1862 Warren Co., PA md 25 Dec 1829 Susan Davis.
3. Tabitha Whitney b. 17 Apr 1807 Onondaga Co., NY d 3 Mar 1886 in Port Jervis, NY md 13 Dec 1831 Leonard Homer.
4. Ira Whitney b. 6 May 1812 Onondaga, NY d. in infancy.
5. Lucy Whitney b. 9 Jan 1813 Onondaga, NY d 26 Jun 1850 in Warren Co., PA md 10 Sep 1836 John Wales.
>From Ira I descend as follows:
1. Ira Whitney and Rebecca Hartwell
2. Joel Whitney and Sarah Mead 3. McKendre Hiram Whitney and Caroline D. Mandeville 4. Susan Flaville Whitney and John Calloway Harper 5. Edward Hiram Harper and Anna Lee Kimbrough 6. Robert Howard Harper and Martha Thelma Hobbs 7. Li Ann Harper and Robert Alvin Lee
I am Li Ann Harper Lee. My great grandmother Susan Flaville Whitney was born in Warren Co., PA and died at The Dalles, OR. I have a picture of her and of her mother Caroline D. Mandeville Whitney. McKendre Hiram Whitney the father died in 1863 and I suspect that it was during the Civil War, however, I can't prove it. The mother then remarried and moved to Missour and then on to Washington where she died in 1914 at Goldendale, Washington. Susan married there and died at The Dalles shortly after giving birth to her 4th child. She died 10 Mar 1890.
Any help that you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

Dear LeAnn:
If you will go to Robert Ward's Web Site at:
http://www.erols.com/rlward1/Whitney/
in the linked section under the title "5 Generation Descent of John & Elinor Whitney", you will find the ancestry of your Nathan-5 Whitney carried back to the immigrant ancestors, John and Elinor Whitney of Watertown, MA, arrived 1635. He is the descendant of Nathan-4, Thomas-3, Thomas-2, John-1, and these people are numbered John-1 is #1, Thomas-2 is #6, Thomas-3 is #30, Nathan-4 is #159, and Nathan-5 is #635 (to be found under Nathan-4 - Nathan-5 does not have an entry of his own). The Stow Vital Records shows the birth of Nathan-5 on 6 Mar 1723-4, and his marriage in Holden to Tabitha in 1752, which is also in the Holden VR's.
The Stow Vital Records also show the birth of several children to Nathan and Tabitha: Aaron, s. Nathan & Tabitha, July 31, 1752 "Old Stile" Asaph, s. Nathan & Tabitha, Apr 29, 1759 Miriam, d. Nathan & Tabitha, Aug 25, 1755 Persis, d. Nathan & Tabitha, Aug 22, 1754, died Oct 2, 1754
Westminster Vital Records show the birth of other children to a Nathan & Tabitha W. David, s. Nathan & Tabitha, 16 Aug 1767 John, s. Nathan & Tabitha, 13 Oct 1769 Jonathan, s. Nathan & Tabitha, 14 May 1761, d. 21 Jun 1764, a. 4y. 2m. 7d. Nathan, s. Nathan & Tabitha, 16 May 1755, d. 28 Aug 1756, a. 1y. 3m. 12d. Nathan (2nd), s. Nathan & Tabitha, 9 Apr 1759, d. 2 Jul 1764, a. 5y. 3m. Nathan (3rd), s. Nathan & Tabitha, 1 Jul 1765 Ruth, d. Nathan & Tabitha, 17 Apr 1763, d. 9 Jul 1764, a. 1y. 3m. Tabitha, d. Nathan & Tabitha, 29 Jun 1753, d. 14 Oct 1756, a. 2y. 3m. 15d. Tabitha (2nd), d. Nathan & Tabitha, 6 Jul 1757, d. 27 Jun 1764, a. 7 nearly.
(Capt.) Nathan, h. of Tabitha, d. 10 Aug 1803, in his 77th y. (GS record) Tabitha, widow of Nathan, d. 26 Dec 1822, a. 89y. 7m.
This is all I could find on the people mentioned in your post. I'm sorry that I couldn't come up with the record of the births of Joel and Nathan, but they are not in our collected Whitney extracts from MA. Would you have any idea that they could have been born in another state?
I hope this helps you in your work. Please write again if there are any other questions that come up.
Happy Hunting:-)
Allan E. Green The Conway VR's show the birth of several children of Ira and his first wife, Jane Bird, but don't seem to show the two you show as born with the second wife, Rebekah Hartwell. It is interesting to note that Enos, the last of the children of the first wife (who died 11 Nov 1797), was not baptized until 8 Jul 1798, two days after the wedding date you cite for Ira and Rebekah. That date is not in my copy of the Conway VR's, although the intent of June 22, 1798 is. The Conway VR's also show the death of Nathan Whitney on Oct. 28, 1801, of cancer, aged 77.

I collected info for unconnected Whitneys several years ago, before we became a part of this wonderful RootsWeb list server. Since so many members come and go now, it became more difficult to keep it up to date. I posted it on my web site and contributed it to CompuServe. Anyone who would like to be added to it, feel free to drop me a note.

Dear Ron & WRG:
Please accept my apology for using the old address for Robert Ward's Web Site. I have typed it so many times over the past couple of years that I forgot that Robert has expanded and altered the structure of his Web Page(s) in the past week. It is now easier to navigate around the site, with the various links categorized, etc. The correct address (which I have just tested twice) is:
http://www.erols.com/rlward1/index.html#gen
and please note that the character following the initials and name in position two is a numeral "one", not an "ell".
For those of you that are new, the site provides on-line virtually all of the source material and resources that the group has generated, added to the tremendous amount of work that Robert Ward has done himself on our collective heritage. It also contains links to a great number of other Whitney-related sites as well as genealogical resource sites in general.
Happy Hunting.

Since the town (Stow, MA) is right next door to the town that 'my' Whitneys came from, I asked my father if he could shed any light on the subject. He says that we don't have any Nathans in our direct line, so he suspects that LiAnn Lee's line are descendants of cousins who lived in the vicinity.
He thinks that he Nathan is the son of Richard Whitney 1684-1775

This all started out as a query to obtain a reprint set of the above named book for our local research room and through this list I was sucessful. I had also put the word out locally and have come across up 2 sets of the original 1878 version out of people's attics. Since originals would not be practical under the heavy usage in a library (not to mention the price) , I told these owners, both elderly, limited income, and computer-less, that I would help them sell them. The first set sold rather quickly. I just looked at the second set which is good condition. I am not in the book business and I hope this is the last set that turns up. I anyone is interested, please email me.

Hi- I am trying to fill in a Whitney line- this is what I have- I am doing this for my grandchildren whose father died suddenly at age 50 and his mother shortly thereafter. This genealogy was done back in the late 1800's. So there is no one to ask questions of that might be able to help (in the family) Perhaps someone in this group may be able to help me fill in the blanks or you may have some suggestion as to where I can find more info- such as a family genealogy, etc. I noted that this letter concerned CT vital records so that perhaps the family remained in Willin gton, CT long enough that I might be able to trace them there. The missing generations are just an estimate- one generation every twenty years- there may well be less generations missing. But I am missing all info on the family between 1763 and 1874.
"Two Welsh brothers ( Whitney) left London for the colonies at time of the Great Plague in London in 1665. One had no children and the other had ten. Josiah Whitney was the son of one of these two brothers, presumably." 1. Josiah Whitney b. 1688 in Groton, CT. no other info on his or his wife's name 2. Josiah Whitney Jr. b. April 1713 in Littleton, Mass. ( family moved to Willington, CT in 1729)wife's name
unknown.
3. Peter Whitney b. 21 April 1738 in Willington, CT m. 21 Apr 1763 Marcy Case ( b. 15 Aug 1745 in Tolland, CT) 4. Son of Whitney- no information b. aft 1764 5. Son of Whitney- no information b. aft 1784 6. Son of Whitney- b. after 1804 7. Son of Whitney - b. after 1824 8. Son of Whitney- b. after 1854 6. Daughter of Whitney b. 15 Jan 1874 m Calvin Eaton (b. 1809 in Hanover, N.H.) The next 2 generations are: 7.Horace Eaton ( son of above) b. 1832. in Royalton, VT. d. 1913 m. 1859 Rebecca Phillips Baxter b. 1833 in Quincy, Mass ( d/o James Baxter and Mary Phipps) d. aft 1900 in Spain. 8. Horace Ainsworth Eaton b. 1871 d. abt 1950 prob. in Syracuase, N.Y. m. 03 Sept 1902 Emily Russell Lovett b. 1874. ( d/o Augustus Sidney Lovett and Elizabeth Russell) d. 1949. 9. Elizabeth Russell Eaton b. 1912 d. 1996 ( paternal grandmother of my grandchildren)
I notice you have an Ella J. Whitney born in Oct. 1851- was that her maiden name - she m. a William Whitney- I wondered what town in CT since we are getting into the time frame of my missing generations. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks- Annabel Bixby l

I have left places for records of other wars, of which I currently have none. These could include (but are not limited to) colonial wars, the French and Indian War, the War of 1812, the Mexican War, and the Civil War. I would welcome any records for WHITNEY folks in any of these wars, too. See

I am working on an ancestry of John CLARY of Watertown & Hadley and his wife Sarah CASSELL m. 5 Feb 1643 in Watertown. (New England Marriages Prior to 1700, Torrey)
His will was probated 31 March 1691 (Hampshire County Probate Recrods, Northampton, MA, Box 33, #31). The following statement is from his will
"I give and bequeath unto Mary Whitney my wifes Daughter five shillings in money and also twenty shillings inmoney I give to be divided among her children"
Does anyone have any idea who this Mary Whitney is?
Torrey does not list any Mary Cassell marrying a Whitney prior to 1691. It is not evident from Torrey's book that Sarah CASSELL was married prior to the above listed marriage.
Thanks for any advice or suggestions on where to search for clues.

There are at several interpretations of this document.
First, Sarah CASSELL could have been previously married and had a daughter Mary CASSELL, who m. ----- WHITNEY. There is no Mary CASSELL among the wives of the early WHITNEY men in either the John-1 or Henry-1 WHITNEY families. There is not even a Mary ----- still living in 1691, with children.
Second, Sarah CASSELL could have had an illegitimate daughter Mary [?CASSELL?] who m. ----- WHITNEY. There is no Mary CASSELL among the wives of the early WHITNEY men in either the John-1 or Henry-1 WHITNEY families. There is not even a Mary ----- still living in 1691, with children.
Thirdly, John CLARY could have had a second wife, who had a daughter Mary
by a first husband, who m. ----- WHITNEY.
According to Henry Bond, _Genealogies and History of Watertown_, Sarah CASSELL, wife of John CLARY, d. 23 Dec 1681. It seems not only possible, but more than likely that John CLARY remarried, and his second wife was the mother of the Mary WHITNEY in question, by a first husband. You do not mention whether John CLARY names his wife in his will. You also do not mention the date of the will, just the date of its proof, 31 Mar 1691.
We should be looking for a Mary (-----) WHITNEY, living when his will was written, with children, whose mother was available to marry John CLARY before his will was written.
Her husband could not have been any child who died young, nor:
John-1 WHITNEY, whose wives were Elinor ----- and Judith (-----) CLEMENT. John-2 WHITNEY, whose wife was Ruth REYNOLDS. Richard-2 WHITNEY, whose wife was Martha COLDAM. Thomas-2 WHITNEY, who m. Mary KEDALL, 11 Jan 1654/5, d. unknown. Her father was probably Richard-1 KETTELL of Charlestown, d. 1680, whose wife Hester/ Esther (WARD) d. 1679, and so left no widow. Jonathan-2 WHITNEY, whose wife was Lydia JONES. Joshua-2 WHITNEY, whose wives were Mary (-----) BUCKMASTER (d. 17 Mar 1672, too early) and Abigail TARBELL. Benjamin-2 WHITNEY, whose wives were Jane ----- and Mary (-----) POOR (mar. in 1695, too late). John-3 WHITNEY (John-2), whose wife was Elizabeth HARRIS. Nathaniel-3 WHITNEY (John-2), whose wives were Sarah HAGAR and Sarah -----. Joseph-3 WHITNEY (John-2), whose wife was Martha BEACH. Benjamin-3 WHITNEY (John-2), whose wife was Abigail HAGAR. Moses-3 WHITNEY (Richard-2), whose wife was Sarah KNIGHT. Richard-3 WHITNEY (Richard-2), whose wife was Elizabeth SAWTELL. Ebenezer-3 WHITNEY (Richard-2), whose wife was Anna -----. (2) 1677, Joseph HAYWARD, who didn't die until 1714. Josiah-3 WHITNEY (Jonathan-2), who didn't marry until about 1694. Joseph-3 WHITNEY (Jonathan-2), who didn't marry until 1706. Benjamin-3 WHITNEY (Jonathan-2), who didn't marry until 1700. Joshua-3 WHITNEY (Joshua-2), who m. ca. 1690, Mary -----, but who had no children. William-3 WHITNEY (Joshua-2), who didn't marry until 1700. Cornelius-3 WHITNEY (Joshua-2), who didn't marry until about 1714. David-3 WHITNEY (Joshua-2), who didn't marry until 1713. Any of the sons of Benjamin-2, who didn't marry until after 1701. Any of the sons in the fourth generation, who didn't marry until after 1695.
That leaves the following: Samuel-3 WHITNEY (John-2, John-1), whose wife was Mary-2 BEMIS, m. 16 Feb 1683/4, but had only one daughter. She was daughter of Joseph-1 and Sarah (-----) BEMIS. Joseph d. bef. 7 Oct 1684, and Sarah d. about 1712, according to Bond. There is no indication in Bond of a remarriage for Sarah, but nothing to contradict it, either. There were lots of other BEMIS children. Why would Mary have been singled out?
This seems to eliminate all the other descendants of John-1 WHITNEY.
Similarly, but with a lot less effort, her husband could not have been:
Henry-1 WHITNEY, whose widow was Sarah (SALMON)(KETCHAM) WHITNEY. John-2 WHITNEY, who married Elizabeth SMITH. Any of the sons of John-2 WHITNEY, who didn't marry until after 1704.
This seems to eliminate all the descendants of Henry-1 WHITNEY.
Are you sure that the name was "WHITNEY" and not "WHITING"? They are very easily mistaken when handwritten.
Additions/corrections welcomed.
Regards,
Robert

Hi. I'm new to this group and have been asked to submit some of my findings. In a nut shell I'll put the descending order of our direct line: 1. John - Son of Thomas and Mary Bray Whitney 2. Richard - b. 1624 England 3. Ebenezer b. Watertown Mass. 1672 4. Zachariah b. 1708? 5. Ephraim b. 1740 Pomfret, Conn. 6. Ebenezer b. 1764 Montague, Mass. 7. Roswell b. 1791 Vt. 8. Martin C. b. 1836 Brooklyn, PA 9. Ernest Lee b. 1862 Harford, PA 10. Carl b.1886 Montrose, PA 11. Maurice b. 1913 Montrose, PA
Ephraim(6) and his son Ephraim Jr. moved from Windhall Vt. in and
around the years 1804-07 to Sherburne NY. Ebenezer, his son moved from Windhall Vt. to Brooklyn PA in 1799. Ephraim also had a daughter Anna, married Nathaniel Rose, which also moved to the Brooklyn area.

Dear WRG,
I wanted to thank Robert Ward for posting the Whitney Family Military Records on his web site. I was fortunate enough to find three new Daughters of the American Revolution lineage numbers for descendants of Joanna Whitney (John-1, Benjamin-2, Nathaniel-3, Abel-4, Micah-5, Joanna-6) and Caleb Sylvester. I had found others before, but I was not previously aware of these three. One of them was my grandmother’s cousin! This will make my next visit to the D.A.R. library quite productive.
If you haven’t had a chance to check these records, you can find them at http://www.erols.com/rlward1/whitney/military/index.html

Hey Jeff, My name is Arv and you are the first person outside my own family who has the same ancestry from Ephraim back. By the way, Zachariah was born in abt 1701 in Concord, Middlesex, MA, and my line separates there with Ebenezer's brother Elisha who was born in Montague, Franklin, MA in 1767. Just thought you might like to know. Happy hunting, Arv Whitney

I have a Horace and a Royal WHITNEY father and son. Russel WHITNEY b. 1801 VT is father of Royal b. 1828, St. Lawrence Co., NY. His son, Horace b. St. Lawrence Co., NY. I do not have father of Russel, but would certainly tend to look toward another Horace or Royal connection. Will keep your info.
I just came back from National Archives where they had military records for NY - WHITNEY, but I did not have your names. Next time I will see if they have CT - WHITNEY, perhaps I can help find a connections.
Thx Sherrill

>I am doing this for my grandchildren whose father died suddenly at age 50
and his mother shortly thereafter. This genealogy was done back in the late
1800's. So there is no one to ask questions of that might be able to help
(in the family) Perhaps someone in this group may be able to help me fill
in the blanks or you may have some suggestion as to where I can find more
info- such as a family genealogy, etc. I noted that this letter concerned
CT vital records so that perhaps the family remained in Willington, CT long
enough that I might be able to trace them there. The missing generations
are just an estimate- one generation every twenty years- there may well be
less generations missing. But I am missing all info on the family between
1763 and 1874.
