Dear WRG: Visited the Sutro Library here in San Francisco yesterday, and found it to be amazingly excellent. In the browsing stacks I found THREE copies of the Stephen Whitney Phoenix book on the Whitneys of Connecticut (all three volumes), two copies of the Pierce (in sad shape - tied up in a boxlike affair) and even one of the Melville. I did take the time to look into volume 1 of the Phoenix, because I had never seen it, ignoring all ofwhat he said about the ancestry of Henry Whitney and the early family in England. The material after the family came to this country seems to be quite well documented (though I can't, of course, speak to the quality of interpretation of the material based on twenty minutes cursory glance). I spent my time using the card catalogue to identify and look through histories of OTHER families and other sources unknown to me. I did find several interesting sources, and some material that seems not to have found its way into our database (and I was using the "advance copy" of Witney12 that Jon just sent me two days ago, while he finishes up polishing it for general distribution. For whoever is interested in the descent of the Whitneys through the family of Sarah Whitney, daughter of Isaiah and Sarah Whitney, who was married to Andrew Parker, I do have some information that will expand the Whitney/Parker connections. Some of it does NOT agree with our database, but the man who wrote it in 1893 didn't have the same access to source material that we do, either. He thought, for instance, that this Isaiah Whitney was the son of Eleazer Whitney and the grandson of Thomas Whitney of Watertown, while our current thinking is that he (Isaiah) was a younger brother of Eleazer (who was the twin of Elnathan). I also picked up a number ot other marriages from this book, which I will report on in a few days. Also of interest is a little phamplet written by Edward Raymond Sandiford of Bloomfield, NJ - in 1941. In it he extends one of the lines much further by proving fairly conclusively that an Ezekiel Whitney of Pomfret, CT, was the son of Ebenezer(3) (Richard2, John1) Whitney, and then proceeds to enumerate his descent and "add them to the descent of John and Elinor Whitney of Watertown:. Again, I will be reporting on this material in a later note - I think I want to add it to the database and then print out a descendancy chart for inclusion in an e-mail. Today we leave the lap of sinful luxury here at the Fairmont Hotel and head north for a brief look at the wine country of Sonoma County (where MAL lives) and then on up the state toward the Redwoods, the coast, and on up into Oregon. I have not yet found out if I can find local AOL numbers up there, so may be out of touch for a day or three. Will certainly be back on-line when we get to Salt Lake City. Happy Hunting! I was just casually reading through your message and there was my great-uncle Ray's name (Edward Raymond Sandiford)!!! Please let me know what the phamplet is called, when it was written, etc. etc. I just recently began investigating the paperwork I have (very little actually and just copies) of his work on our Mayflower heritage (Brewster, Alden, and Sampson). I'm in contact with the Mass. Society of Mayflower Descendants now and they have been very helpful. How would I go about finding out what else my great-uncle published? On his application to the Mass Mayflower Society is recorded his occupation as "Publisher's Representative" and business address c/o Chilton Co., 100 E. 42nd Street, New York, NY. Unfortunately, I am "on the road" and can't be sure that I remember the URL accurately. However, I am sure I remember another one, that of Robert Ward, who has lots of other Whitney information AND a link to Randy's page. That URL is: http://www.erols.com/rlward1/Whitney/ being certain that it is r "ell" ward "one" after the third slash. At this site you will find a listing of the lines of descent of many of the members of the WRG, a very full and complete descent for the first five generations, very carefully documented and sourced, the Whitney Vital Records extracted from dozens and dozens of MA towns and other sources, and the full text of two articles that bear significantly on the question of the english ancestry of this family. I certainly hope that we can help you with your Maine Whitneys - I remember that there are a number of our members who are currently working on this question, and I know that they will be anxious to hear from you. Please post the details of your earliest known Whitney ancestors to the list, and lets see if we can help. We will also be glad to add your Whitney data to the general picture of this family, but lets find out where they fit in, so we can make the best links possible. There are several other Whitney sub-groups that are NOT descended from John and Elinor, and I don't want to leave them out. Nonetheless, as far as I know, most if not all of the Whitneys in Maine stemmed from the J&E branch rather than one of the others. Looking forward to hearing from you soon. Happy Hunting! Allan E. Dear Whitney researchers, I got this message on my Whittaker list, and checked it out. There are a LOT of WHITNEYs there. Check it out! "I was just searching the Net for Civil War photographs and came across an interesting site for those who may have had ancestors in the Civil War. The US Army Military History Institute at Carlisle Barracks has a website with a searchable photo database. The photo database has over 20,000 photos. You can search by name (I found two photos listed for Gen. Edward W. Whitaker) or by military organization (1st Connecticut Cavalry - for instance). Although you cannot see the actual photo, you can e-mail a request for a photocopy of the photograph (free), and purchase a photo if you desire. If you are interested go to: http://carlisle-www.army.mil/usamhi/PhotoDB.html Best wishes to all!" It seemed very interesting, and if anyone knows who "Pardon Whitney" who fought in the Civil War was, I'm curious. It is with some reluctance that I seek clarification to an issue that is old news for the rest of you. I am interested in clarifying the ancestry of the immigrant John Whitney to Massachusetts. I have found a number of resources, and was especially pleased to find Melville's book on the family with its connections to royalty. I was happy to add that information into my files. I was later disappointed to find the article "Whitney Origins Revisited" by Paul Reed in TAG, Vol 69. However, because most of his conclusions are based on chronology assumptions, and an occasional omission of reference, I have been reluctant to let the Melville line go. I assume this issue has been argued out, and that some consensus exists. Could someone please contact me directly to brief me on the current thinking about the issue? My descent from John and Elinor comes through their son John and Ruth (Reynolds) Whitney and, in turn, their daughter Ruth and Enoch Lawrence. I have requested a copy of the latest Whitney Gedcom, and I'm curious to see what it contains. I've seen the many requests, but I must have signed on too late to learn all that it covers. Is it a compilation of all descents from John and Elinor, and, if so, to whom should I present my complete line, and what are the requirements to do so? I look forward to hearing from someone regarding the Whitney ancestors in England, and would be pleased to share the information I have should anyone be interested. "Shirley Center, the oldest section of the present township of that name, remains still largely undisturbed, partly because of its isolated position, having been left at one side when the newer automobile highway was routed through that area. It is undoubtedly for that reason that it is still possible to get much the effect of that little center of colonial life when visiting the dwelling of Thomas Whitney, son of the Rev. Phineas Whitney, the first minister of Shirley, after its being set apart as a separate township. This occurred in 1753, on Jan. 5th; the first meetinghouse having been built in 1754.. It was replaced by a second and larger structure in 1773. The cupola was probably a part of this original building. Unfortunately, porches were added in 1804, along with other changes, and the structure was again remodeled in 1839; so that it is no longer possible to get an interesting photograph of the entire building. Mr. Thomas Whitney, whose house remains the most important of the small group around the village, was born March 19th, 1771, and died on January 14th, 1844. We have the date of his marriage to Henrietta Parker, which was July 7th, 1799; and it is probable that his hospitable farmhouse was rebuilt a little while after that date. Standing a little back from the main street, behind its guardian elms, it is an able representative of the four-square New England type that came into being shortly before the Revolution and persisted until the more daitily graceful structures of the 1815 to 1830 period succeeded it, just before the turn to the heavy dignity of the Neo-Greek influence was to flow over the country; replacing these gracious homes with Greek temples, somewhat arbitrarily and awkwardly made to serve the purposes of a family dwelling. The front of the house facing the Common still shows the old type shutters, laking the middle cross style. The detail of the front porch indicates a period preceding the the date of Thomas Whitney's marriage, to which some of the enlargement and additions might easily belong. The generous spacing of the front entrance porch columns, their slight, almost crude, entasis, the heavy molding of necking and base, all point to workmanship of a time much nearer the Revolution, or even somewhat preceding." I'm going to try to scan the photo of the house, although it IS a little big for my hand held scanner. If anyone is interested in a pcx file let me know and I'll send it. He suggested I forward it to the entire WHITNEY group. Hopefully, it'll be helpful to someone, and maybe I'll get some fresh info back. I may have some info on your Eveline Whitney. My 4th gr grandfather, Phinehas Whitney (John, John, Nathaniel, William, Samuel) married Elizabeth Rand in Westminster, MA. They moved to Rutland Co., VT, after the 1800 MA Census and before the 1810 VT Census. In his 1825 Military Pension Application # 19682 (denied), Phinehas states that he has a 22 yr old daughter Evelina, who is in poor health, works out a little, and stays with parents when unable to work. Evelina's birth date would be a little off your 1805 date, but accurate dates were not always given. He also states that he lives in his son's-in-law house but doesn't give his name--Blaisdell might be a possibility. Phinehas was granted a military Pension in 1832 # S 22581. I have found him in the Westminster, MA censuses for 1790 and 1800; 1810 Pittsford Twp., Rutland Co., VT Census; and the 1830 Brandon, Rutland Co., VT Census. I don't know where is was in 1820. A Phineas Whitney is listed as being warned out of Salisbury, Addison Co., VT, 1 Nov 1814. He might be the same person. That's all I know about Phinehas Whitney in VT. Phinehas and Elizabeth Rand had 6 children whose names I know: Lydia (b. 30 Mar 1788); Bettsa (b. 27 Dec 1789); Nancy (b. 21 Sep 1791); John (b. 25 Jul 1793, d. 6 Jan 1849); Thomas (b. 18 Mar 1795, d. 4 Jul 1881). All of these were born in Westminster, MA. The sixth is Evelina. I know nothing more about the girls. The 2 brothers moved to Washington Co., OH, and are listed in the 1827 Waterford Twp., Washington Co., OH Census. John remained in OH, but Thomas moved west to Perry Twp., Delaware Co., IN, in 1831 and remained there until his death. Thomas is one of my direct ancestors and I have followed that line to the present (me). I hope this has helped you and that your Eveline and my Evelina are the same person. Being able to see first hand the sail of the USS Constitution. What an experience. We have a 34ft boat that is moored in Salem Ma., which is the next town over from Mablehead. Sunday, we followed her on her trip from Boston to Marblehead. Once she was anchored in Marblehead Harbor we were able to get within 50yds of her. She's a beauty!!! Today we were able to see her set her sails[well-six of them], hear her fire her cannons, and were able to see the Blue angles[which flew right over our boat!!]. It was a most thrilling two days. What has this to do with Whitney geneaology, you may ask? Well, it does. My great grandfather Albert Raymond Whitney, worked on one of the restoration projects back in the early 1900's. He acquired a piece of the original wood which he used to carve a replica of her, using a jacknife. It took him over a year and a half to make and contained over 1,000 small pieces, which he whittled to shape and fastened to their respective places. What excitement we all felt today when we saw her sail. How very fortunate we were to be out there and so close to her. I took tons of pictures-can't wait to get them all developed. Have a great day! From the boat docks and state parks at the water's edge, the mountain rises to its peak which is now crowned by Lost Bridge Village and the Lodge on Whitney Mountain. The Whitney name came from a family who came from Randolph Co., NC, by way of Kansas to homestead on the mountain in 1876. Elijah and Ruth Ann Whitney brought their family of children and began to turn the rocky surface into a bountiful orchard. When Elijah died, his son Jesse who had married Addie Wilson continued to nurture the orchards so that train carloads of apples were shipped each summer. At the time of Jesse's death in 1929, he owned 400 acres on the mountain. On July 6, the last of Jesse's children passed away at age 86. She was my mother-in-law. She made her last visit to the old home place on the mountain in June and viewed the lake from the balcony of the Chapel on Whitney Mountain. A second stroke placed her in the hospital until we were able to bring her to our home. Froze one night in Laramie, WY - low 40's and windy - and baked in Urbana, IL - temp in the mid 90's and muggy. Ah, well, life is full of extremes, even though us older folk would just as soon avoid them - at least I would. While on the subject of "folks" - whatever happened to that term being used as a name for a group of people not personally known to the speaker?? We were "you guys"(ed) to death by waiters and waitresses in 16 states. If I sound like an old curmudgeon, I guess I am, but that sticks in my craw almost (but not quite) as much as men or boys sitting in a restaurant with their hats or caps on. Whatever happened to manners? I have been going through some old mail since we got back, and wondered if any result ever came from the following posting? >From: [email protected] (Pamela Wojahn) >Sender: [email protected] >To: [email protected] (WHITNEY family genealogy list) >Jonathan Nichols and Mary Whitney had a daughter named Eleanor Nichols >who married a Squire Cogswell on Dec. 25, 1843 in Collins, Erie, New >York. He was born Dec. 14, 1820 in Monroe, New York and Eleanor was born >Oct. 24, 1822 in Collins, Erie, New York. I realize that this has only one Whitney reference, but does anyone now recognize a Mary Whitney, probably born ca 1800, who married a Jonathan Nichols? If so, did anyone answer this query? As soon as I can, I'll start publishing some of the material I gathered both at Salt Lake City and at the Sutro Library. However, I have one or two other tasks to accomplish here after a five week absence, so will just say it will come soon. Toddlers racing and hollering through the reading room isn't the only disturbance. In most of the libraries I've visited, the employees talked loudly and set the tone for everyone else. In the few quiet libraries, I make an effort to complement them. Welcome back Alan. And isn't it grand to get home again? The older we get the more we love peace, solitude and our own pillow(along with the computer!) I've just fallen into a "gold mine". I found a Whitney researcher on the MN website and she was in my line. She sent me a 15 page copy of the "Recollections of Nancy Jane Morrow Whitney", daughter of Albion Paris(William, Samuel, Abner, John, Isaiah, Thomas, John). She wove a wonderful story of the family, with details of travels, physical descriptions of folks and lots more. I am related to Albion, who was brother to my ggGrandmother Nancy Whitney Eastman and to his wife Susan, who was the neice of Nancy's husband, B.D. Eastman.. I am updating all my data and am almost ready to forward all I have to Jon Aston and Robert Ward. I am excited to finally find someone in my Whitney line and she lives right there in Tiburon, MAL! It is a list prepared quite some time ago by a man named Jessee Workman, a member of the LDS church, and submitted at the Manti Temple for proxy baptism. I deduce that it is old because of the typeface in which it is written - similar in type to the old iron-framed Smith-Corona or Remington typewriters from the thirties, one of which I was still using when I first went to college in the fifties. There is also connected to this list the name Alonzo W. Whitney, whose name appears in the (I am ashamed that I didn't write it down) - I think it was associated with the IGI entry for Henry, the information in which must have been found in the Phoenix book, because it mentioned Berkhampstead St. Mary in Hertfordshire as his birthplace ca 1620. I queried one of the expert assistants at the information desk at the SLC library, and she agreed that, while generational descent is not clearly shown, all of the names following Henry's would most likely be his direct descent. Here, then, is what was on that list in the microfilmed archive. All of the entries had the abberviation "rel." after each of them. However, you could get the film number the same way I did, look up Henry in the IGI and go through the screens on sourcing and you will find the film number. In the line for Henry in one of the IGI entries for his name (there are several) it shows "Re: Alonzo W. Whitney", which I take to mean the entry came because of his (unspecified) relationship to Henry. However, the data in the IGI entry and the film have no other identification for this Alonzo. What I probably should have done, but didn't because this is not my line, is follow up by searching the IGI or Ancestral File for this Alonzo W. Whitney. You might want to try that and let us all know what, if anything, can be learned from that It would seem to me that the best use of the list of names and dates is to assist someone in finding the vital records they are searching for by locating a particular one of Henry's descendants at a specific time and place, which can then be the focus of a search. While in the middle of my answer to her, it occurred to me that what I was writing to her should probably be sent to the rest of you as well.) Oh, by all means, keep your "grandeur" bright. There is a little being done, but not too much as far as I can tell. While at the American Library Association convention in San Francisco, held one month ago, I did discover that there was a web site in England that had a lot of old material from Cheshire available on-line for searching. I have simply been too busy in the week and a half since our return home to sit down and spend some time exploring it. As soon as I get a chance, I'll look at it and see if it looks like it might be useful. If it is, perhaps you could join in the effort of sifting. The "publicity" material I picked up from the person manning the booth at the exhibits simply indicates that there are some (without stating how much) materials between 1100 and 1500 that have been made available on-line. I don't even know if these are graphic facsimilies of the original documents that have been scanned and saved, actual transcriptions of the originals in dog Latin, or translations into modern English. (You weren't a Latin teacher, by any chance?) Also, one of our members, a physics professor at Oxford named (appropriately enough) John Whitney, has agreed to do a little digging in his "spare time" - which, I am sure, is not very extensive. This actually points up one of the problems we have with this family. There don't seem to be very many Whitneys in England any more, and those that are there are not direct descendants of our "main" line from Whitney, Clifford, Icomb etc. That (male) line died out before the end of the 1600's, as witnessed by the pathetic attempt by young John Whitney, nephew of our immigrant John and son of his younger brother, Robert Whitney of St. Peter's, Cornhill, to lay claim to the family estates and honors. (Never mind that if his claim HAD been valid it would have been negated/superseded by the superior claim of our John and his eldest male descent, since John was older brother to Robert.) Obviously, since I have not had opportunity to spend time tracing them, I do not now KNOW, but do suspect that most, if not all, of the remaining Whitneys stem from lines that descend from younger male Whitneys who left Herefordshire and "married out", quite a few of which seem to have gravitated to Cheshire. At what point in the long cherished association of the family with the Baskervilles, Milbournes, Touchets, etc., these men wandered off in search of other women who were sole or joint heiresses (the favorite method of family advancement), and thus how much of the "royal heritage" can be re-established, is a question that may have a long wait to be answered. I have gotten my materials somewhat sorted out, and hope to be able to send out some of the data I gleaned while on my trip, especially some of the things I found at the Sutro Library in SF. Until then, Happy Hunting! Allan "I'm always late. Some of my ancestors came over on the December Flower" ==================================================== From: [email protected] Date: Wed, 30 Jul 1997 22:01:05 -0400 (EDT) To: [email protected] Subject: Benjamin Whitney, b. 7 Oct 1687 Dear WRG: I have been trying to gather together some of the information I found at the Sutro Library in SF. One of the sources from which I copied some Whitney material was entitled "Jane Harris of Rocky River", by Jenness Reese Reyes, 1964, T.S., 273pp. In it, on pp 242-248 & p. 260, she deals with the connection of some Whitneys to this family. After a brief bit of Whitney material gleaned from Melville and Pierce, she begins with a Benjamin Whitney who is married first to a Sarah Barrett and secondly to an Abigail Bridge. She quotes Pierce about Benjamin's death in Boston in 1737 as "one of the first men in Boston... estate of 4168 pounds" [a lot of money in those days], states that he had come to Boston from Marlboro, and goes on with her descent from his fifth child, Solomon. In checking our database, I find a Benjamin Whitney, born 7 Oct 1687, as a husband of Sarah Barret and Abigail Bridge, whose mother is given as Elizabeth Lawrence and whose father is shown as unknown. Further search turns up an Elizabeth Lawrence married to a Thomas(3) Whitney, b. 24 Aug 1656, himself a son of Thomas(2) and Mary Kedall/Kettle of Stow [at that time]. The problem with our current database is that Elizabeth Lawrence appears with two marriages, one to Thomas(3) and one to an Unknown Whitney, and the children (which includes Benjamin) are listed only with the second of those marriages, rather than with Thomas as the father. I tend to suspect that this is another in the group of inconsistencies that have arisen because two different people submitted material to Jon Aston for inclusion, and one of them came "down" to Thomas(3) and Elizabeth Lawrence and stopped, and the other came "up" to Elizabeth Lawrence without having identified her Whitney husband and stopped as well. The process of merging brought together the two entries for Elizabeth, but left her with a known husband and no children and an unknown husband and the whole list of her Whitney children attached. This is NOT Jon's fault - he has repeatedly said that he will not arbitrate between two different submissions that do not agree, just serve as the collector and compiler - for which I, for one, am extremely grateful.. The Stow VR's show the birth of the first five of the children shown in Whitny11 for Elizabeth and Unknown as born to Thomas and Elizabeth (Whetney). Therefore I am inclined to correct the database to eliminate husband Unknown Whitney and make Thomas the only husband of Elizabeth. I will allow a little time for commentary on this before doing anything irrevocable, however That said, does anyone know where the last three children of Thomas(3) and Elizabeth (Nathan, b. 18 Nov 1689, Susanna, b. ca 1691, and Abigail, b. ca 1693) were born? I have searched all of the Vital Records in the series that I have and find no Nathan born of these parents, and no other Thomas' listings that represent children of a Thomas and Elizabeth. Does whoever submitted the material that comes back through Benjamin(4) through his mother, Elizabeth, recognize this? I'll take care of all of this and then post another letter tomorrow with the descent from Benjamin(4) and his two wives. The Marlborough VR's shows the marriage to Sarah Barret Feb. 7, 1710, nine children with Sarah (our database only has one), her death Feb. 15, 1730 and (without the marriage to Abigail located at this time) five more children with the second wife that do appear in the database. This, of course, suggests that whoever submitted this material was descended from the second wife, and got all that right, but did not know much about the first wife. If anyone can find the location and date of the second marriage, please post it. Finally, as to what is coming - the book cited way back at the top of this is concerned with the descent from Solomon Whitney, fifth of the nine children of Benjamin(4) and Sarah Barrett Whitney. I'll get things together and carry on from there later. Looking forward to ironing out these connections. Happy Hunting:-) Allan "Those who live by the sword get shot by those that don't" P.S. Did anyone else notice in their news tonight about the little earthquake excitement we had near here this morning? The quake centered just south of the Cumberland Gap and Middlesboro, where one of my wife's libraries is located. Nothing much to it - it wasn't very big and the damage was virtually nil, but it is unusual enough in this area to warrent some attention. I have more on other children if anyone wants it...Does anyone have anything on the Schoonover connection other than what is in the CT Whitneys book? (URL is http://www.erols.com/rlward1/Whitney/). Source (A) is the Stow VR as found in the Middlesex County Records at East Cambridge; (B) is the Marlborough Vital Records, pub. Franklin P. Rice, edited or amplified occasionally from a Church Record as to spelling; and (C) is the material copied from the book, "Jane Harris of Rocky River", by Jenness Reese Reyes, 1964, TS, 273pp.; Sutro Library, San Francisco, CA, CS71 H315, 1964.. Benjamin(4) Whitney [Thomas(3), Thomas(2), John(1)], born 7 Oct 1767, Stow, Middlesex, MA (A); married (1) Sarah Barret(t) 7 Feb 1710/11, Marlborough, Middlesex, MA (B) died after Oct. 19, 1737 in Boston, MA [his will was made on that date] (C) This Benjamin Whitney is the head of Family #158 in the five-generation listing of the descendants of John and Elinor Whitney on Robert Ward's Whitney Webpage. I will simply list the children below, with the attached number from Ward's Webpage. Anyone who wants the full details of any of these may get them from that site - it is far more complete than the (C) source above, and I see no point in retyping his work. Children with Sarah Barrett: (all born in Marlborough, Middlesex, MA) (B) 1) Deborah, b. 7 Nov 1711 (Ward 619) 2) Barrett, b. 22 Sep 1715 (Ward 620) 3) David, b. 21 Jan 1716/17 (Ward 621) 4) Persis, b. 10 Jan 1718/19 (Ward 622) 5) Solomon, b. 20 Dec 1721 (Ward 623) 6) Sarah, b. 13 Jul 1723 (Ward 625) NOTE there is no #624 7) Timothy, b. 6 Jul 1725 (Ward 626) 8) Dinah, b. 12 Jul 1727 (Ward 627) 9) Job, b. 22 Oct 1729 (Ward 628) Children with Abigail Bridge: (all born in Marlborough, Middlesex, MA) (B) 1 or 10) Abigail, b. 13 May 1731 (Ward 629) 2 or 11) Benjamin, b. 8 May 1732 (Ward 630) 3 or 12) George, b. 25 Mar 1733 (Ward 631) 4 or 13) Samuel, b. 3 Sep 1734 (Ward 632) 5 or 14) Anna, b. 23 or 27 Oct 1736 (Ward 633) Odds & ends extracted: "He [Benjamin(4)] first bought land at Marlboro in 1710; 300 acres and a house and barn from Samuel Morse... In 1711 he... owned large tracts in Marlboro, a part inherited from John and Deborah Barrett." "Solomon his son was willed Petersham because of service in the Indian Wars." (C) As soon as I can organize the more complete information from Ward with the incomplete material from the Reyes book, I'll continue with this project. Ward essentially stops with the 14 children of Benjamin(4) and his two wives, but does provide a few snippets that pertain to the line of descent upon which the Reyes book focusses. I may have this done and sent out by later tonight, or certainly tomorrow. For those who have asked, no, the URL for the Cheshire site is not a big secret. I just haven't told you yet because A) I have to dig the stuff from the convention out of two big carryalls full of material in order to find it, and B) I thought I might check it out to see what was there and how it is organized before passing it on so as to make an (hopefully) intelligent comment or two on its possible use. Speaking of the latter, if any of you saw from the many sources where it appeared the "ad" for this wonderful URL that is supposedly the source for electronically accessible information about virtually everyone in the English-speaking world [found at www.nametrace.com], I looked at it last night and it looks like the electronic equivalent of Halberts of Bath Ohio, publishers of "The World Book of Whitneys", etc - in other words, I saw nothing you can't get from the first few pages of the Pierce or Melville books about coming with William the Conqueror, centering in Hereford, etc. Happy Hunting to all:-) Allan "Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it" ==================================================== Date: Thu, 31 Jul 1997 19:00:14 -0400 To: [email protected] From: "Robert L. I'm looking forward to this material, since I have only his marriage to Elizabeth SMITH and births of four children, recorded in Marlborough, Harvard, and Petersham, MA. I also have marriages for two of them, Sarah and Meriam. Regards, Robert Robert L. Ward [email protected] http://www.erols.com/rlward1/ 12236 Shadetree Lane, Laurel, MD 20708-2832 301-776-1659
