Benjamin Whitney is named as a proprietor of the upper Township on Ashuelot River.
pg. 22 "At a full meeting of the proprietors of...
"Voted that Capt. Samuel Sadey of Medfield, Mr. Daniel Hoar of Concord, Dr. Israel How of Andover, Lieut. Benjamin Whitney of Marlboro, Mr. Elish Root of Deerfield be a Committee to call a meeting of said proprietors...."
My questions are this. First, is anyone familiar with this Benjamin Whitney? Also, is this Marlboro, NH or MA? There is also a Marlboro, VT
Any insight would be appreciated.

Dear Debbie Stlelmach and Barb Oliver,
Thank you both
for your inquires. Barb I am happy to know that you are a descendant of Mary Whitney, sister of Fanny, as I have not corresponded with any one who is before. You certainly seem to know more about the William Henry Whitney family than I do, as I do not know who her siblings married completely, nor their descendants. I would be happy to share with you any info on Fanny's descendants, and also about her mother Fanny Miller's ancestors, which I have some lines.
Concerning your request Debbie (from Whitney L 26 jun 1998, Re: Old
Civil war letter), perhaps Barb would have info on your ancestor Charles Whitney born 1823 and his relation to William Henry Whitney and Fanny Miller.: Barb Oliver, [email protected] (http://www2.pcom.net/trees). I will have to check out Barbs site also! Thanks again to both for your emails!
Fr. Theodore Reznowski P.S. in a weeks time I will be leaving for a year to Ukraine, so this genealogy I will have to put aside for a while, but my mother lives here and would be happy to continue sharing info, though she is just learning her way around the web at present.

Hi, Searching for information re: ancestors of my ggg grandmother Clarissa Arminia WHITNEY, b. 22-Sep-1821 in Erie County, PA, d. 23-Sep-1917 in Dawson, Dallas County, Iowa, m. in 1840 to Nathan G. LEWIS, possibly in Ohio (I believe all their children were born in Ohio, some in Springfield County, Ohio).
Thanks for any help you may be able to offer.

Theodore,
Thanks for the update. Barb and I have "met" and swapped data. Not only do we have possible Whitney connections but Taber's too. Her Sherman ancestors passed through Hawaii on his way to Australia and I've tried to do some research here for her at the state archives.
Thanks! Debbie Stelmach Kailua, HI

There was only one WHITNEY listed in Erie Co., PA, in the 1820 Census: Abel WHITNEY in Elk Creek Twp. (p. 166). Abel was in Conneautter Twp., Erie Co., in 1830 (p. 313). In 1840 he was in Edingburg Twp., Erie Co. (p. 041), and new WHITNEYs appear: Henry in Elk Creek Twp. (p. 186) and Horace in Harbor Creek Twp. (p. 134), John in Girard Twp. (p. 105). By 1850, they are all gone. In Ohio in 1850, I find Abel WHITNEY in Florence Twp., Erie Co. (p. 419), and another in Loramie Twp., Shelby Co. (p. 248).
Perhaps someone else can offer further information on Abel WHITNEY of Erie Co., PA.
I strongly suggest you obtain a copy of Arminia LEWIS's death certificate in 1917 from the state of Iowa. It should list the names of her parents.

Robert

Welcome to the Whitney Research Group (WRG)!
If there is information lacking after Henry S. WHITNEY's children, it is because we do not have that information. Of course, if the information concerns living people, there is a privacy issue.
As I make it, your line is as follows:

You join a subgroup of our Whitney Research Group, the descendants of Henry-1 WHITNEY of Long Island, NY, and Norwalk, CT. He is not known to be related to John-1 WHITNEY of Watertown, MA, whose progeny were somewhat more numerous than those of Henry-1.
I have a few comments on your line:
1. The parents of Henry-1 WHITNEY are unknown. The assertion that he was son of Thomas WHITNEY and Mary ROACH is false. It was a fraudulent report from an unscrupulous genealogist hired by S. Whitney Phoenix. Proof of the fraud was found by several people. There are two reports describing the situation. One is available from me, an electronic copy of a 1994 article by Paul C. Reed published in _The American Genealogist_. The second you can access from the World-Wide Web: <http://www.erols.com/rlward1/whitney/desalis.html>.
2. John-2 WHITNEY, son of Henry-1, was born a while before Henry's marriage to widow Sarah (SALMON) KETCHUM, and so was by an otherwise unknown first wife.
3. For more on your line, see <http://www.erols.com/rlward1/whitney/henry/>.

I recently gave myself a gift and purchased an additional 66 issues of The American Genealogist to complete my collection of available back issues. While looking through the newly arrived issues, I came across the following article in Vol. 52, No. 2 (April 1976, Whole Number 206), p. 117-119. I checked the online database and found that it is missing some of the individuals mentiond in this article.
EBENEZER WHITNEY OF STOW, MASS., AND POMFRET, CONN.
BY PRENTISS GLAZIER
The Whitney Genealogy compiled by the late Frederick C. Pierce
failed to define the complete family of Ebenezer Whitney of Pomfret, Conn., erroneously assigning some of his children to another group. Original research by the writer and by Edward R. Sandiford of Bloomfield, N.J., brought clarification of this unit, with additional records, in the 1940s.
Ebenezer3 Whitney, youngest son of Richard2 Whitney (John1)
and Martha Coldam, was born at Watertown, Mass., 30 June 1682, and accompanied his parents to Stow, Mass. Here his father conveyed to him, subject to lifetime support, three parcels of land, 31 Dec. 1707, referring also to Ebenezer's brothers, Moses and Richard Jr., and to his sister Joanna Cady, apparently the wife of John Cady Jr. He and his wife Anna sold this property, 25 May 1714, soon moving to Canterbury, Conn. In 1721 he bought land at Pomfret, Conn., where he died 5 Aug. 1727.
No record of the marriage of Ebenezer and Anna has been
found, many early records of Stow being destroyed by fire. Mr. Sandiford's research revealed that in 1728 Ezekie14 Whitney, by agreement with his mother and his brother and sister, established his rights to the double portion of primogeniture, as the eldest legitimate son. The inference is that Zachariah, clearly older, had been born out of wedlock and possibly Esther also. In any event, it seems likely that Anna was the mother of all the children. In 1725 the father deeded twenty acres to Zachariah4, possibly to ensure fair treatment for the "natural son," so termed in the conveyance.
Widow Anna Whitney married John Comins of Pomfret before 14
May 1745, when he acknowledged receipt of his wife's share in the estate of her son, Dr. Ebenezer4 Whitney. Pomfret records give the date of her death, 15 May 1758.
Presumably all but one of the children were born at Stow.
Their ages are approximated, with order of birth as indicated in Ezekiel's deed.
i. Zachariah4 , b. by 1704 (since of age in 1725); m. Ruth Taylor,- Pomfret, 30 July 1730. A communication to the Hartford Times, 14 June 1952, names seven children: Mary, Zachariah, Moses, Aaron, Ephraim ("m. Rhoda ---- and res. Montague, Mass."); Ruth and Ebenezer ("b. 21 April 1740").
ii. Esther, b. say ca. 1705-6; m. Pomfret, 18 Jan. 1727, William Bigginton, and d. there 19 Oct. 1727, apparently without surviving issue.
iii. Ezekiel, b. say ca. 1707; m. (1) Pomfret, 18 July 1728, Isabel
Taylor who d. in childbed, 15 April 1731; (2) 22 July 1731, Sarah Parke (not "Farrah"), daughter of William and Jane (Bordwyn) Parke. They moved to Plainfield, Conn., where his estate was administered, 31 Jan. 1751.
iv. Enoch, b. say ca. 1708, m. Plainfield, 21 Dec. 1732, Thankful Parke, sister of the above Sarah. Mr. Sandiford's booklet, Some More Descendants of John and Elinor Whitney (1941), lists eight children:
1. Samuel5, b. Plainfield, 24 May 1734; m. Sarah ----- and d. at Woodbury, Conn., 30 Sept. 1812.
2. Susanna, b. Plainfield, 13 March 1739.
3. Rosanna, b. Plainfield, 29 Aug. 1740.
4. Asa, b. Preston, 10 July 1742.
5. Thankful, b. Preston, 8 April 1747.
6. Hezekiah, b. Preston, 26 Dec. 1748; m. "in the Fall of 1774 at Plainfield: Olive Knight; d. at Washington, Conn., 20 Dec. 1827.
7. Joseph, b. Kent, Conn., 18 June 1753; res. Warren, Conn., 1837.
8. Sarah, b. Kent, 18 June [sic] 1756.
+ v. Israel, b. by 1709, m. Hannah Blodgett (not
"Learned"). See below.
vi. Anna, b. say ca. 1712; m. Woodstock, 11 Dec. 1733, Ebenezer Rood of Stafford.
vii. (Dr.) Ebenezer, b. Canterbury, 15 Sept. 1715; a
physician at Worcester, his estate administered by brother Israel, 15 Feb. 1745. Unmarried.
Israel4 Whitney, son of Ebenezer3 and Anna Whitney, born by 1709, was briefly of Littleton, Mass., buying land at Groton, Mass., 12 Dec. 1730. A cordwainer by occupation, he bought land at Thompson parish (Killingly), Conn., in 1732, but settled at oxford, mass., in 1733. He joined the Cape Breton expedition in 1745 and died by 1 July 1746, when the widow Hannah was appointed administratrix of his estate and that of his brother.
He married Hannah Blodgett, (not "Learned"), about 1732. She
was born at Chelmsford, Mass., 6 Dec. 1715, daughter of William3 Blodgett (Daniel2, Thomas') and Mercy Warren. After her husband's death she and her children joined her relatives at Dunstable, Mass., where she died by 6 Feb. 1750. Her daughter Sybilla and her brothers, William and Josiah Blodgett, petitioned for the administration of her estate; another brother, Nathaniel Blodgett, was appointed executor.
The Whitney Genealogy was in error on several points
pertaining to this group: Sybilla was not the only surviving child, since her brother and a sister lived to marry and have families. The two Cummings genealogies should also be corrected- - and Mormon records revised.
The six children of Israel and Hannah (Blodgett) Whitney,
recorded at Oxford, Mass., were:
i. Sybilla5, b. 4 Feb. 1733; m. Dunstable, 1756, Oliver Cummings.
The Cummings Genealogy erred in calling his mother "Elizabeth Whitney of Stowe"; she was probably Elizabeth Coburn of Dunstable.
ii. Josiah, b. 18 April 1735, d. 13 or 15 Dec. 1740.
iii. Hannah, b. 15/16 April 1737; m. Dunstable, 26 Nov. 1761, Eleazer Cummings, brother of the above Oliver. Their first son was Israel Whitney Cummings.
iv. Tamar, b. 13 Oct. 1739, d. 6 Oct. 1740.
v. Mary, b. 22 July 1741, d. 4 Feb. 1754 at Dunstable.
+ vi. Richard, b. 22 April 1743; m. Sarah Butterfield and
Hannah Holt.
Richard5 Whitney, son of Israel4 Whitney and Hannah Blod-
gett, was born at Oxford, Mass., 22 April 1743. Since not of age, he did not join his sisters in conveying property left by their father. In 1758 he chose Oliver Cummings as his guardian.
He married (1) at Chelmsford, 12 March 1767, Sarah Butter-
field. They moved to Wilton, N.H., where she died 16 Feb. 1773, and he soon married (2) Hannah Holt, who was born 18 Jan. 1754. Having served in the Revolution at Wilton, he took his family to Brookline, Vermont, about 1797, settling at Whitney Hill, and here he died 29 Oct. 1816, his widow in April 1833.
From descendants we learn that he wore a long queue. One
daughter braided his hair; another knitted his long stockings and a third ironed his ruffled shirts. He also wore knee breeches and buckled shoes. In later years he grew very large with dropsy, and was buried in an over-size coffin. The nicknames of his sons were Dick, Pick, Tim, Eb, Bum, Ike and Sol. Family records provide data of the children. Apparent- ly there was only one by the first wife, Sarah Butterfield.
i. Richard6, b. 25 June 1770, d. Weston, Vt., 31 March 1845, aged 74/9/-. No information as to marriage or family. ii. Israel, b. 4 July 1774. iii. Timothy Holt, b. 21 Nov. 1776; m. Abigail Blanchard; issue. iv. Ebenezer, b. 3 July 1778; m. and had a son Erastus. v. Abram, b. 28 Jan. 1780, no further record. vi. Isaac, b. 21 Jan. 1784; m. and had son Daniel. vii. Jacob, b. 15 Jan. 1784, d. 9 July 1785.
viii. Hannah, b. 15 Aug. 1785, m. (1) James Campbell but was
divorced; (2) Josephus Orvis, son of Waitstill Orvis. ix. Sarah, b. 1 Nov. 1787, m ----- Harwood. x . Solomon, b. 26 Aug. 1790, no further information. xi. Chloe, b. 22 Nov. 1795; m. David Kidder from Oxford, Mass.
NOTE: Zachariah How witnessed the receipt of Anna ( ---- )
(Whitney) Comins for her share of the estate of her son Ebenezer. Since the eldest son's name was Zachariah, the possibility of relationship should be probed.

I've had a recent run in with this "society" that leads me to believe tha= t they are not legitimate.
I went to the web site to check it out. The first thing that struck me a= s strange was that their "application" is posted directly on the net and lo= oks like a badly composed Word document that someone drafted up. I don't kno= w about anyone else, but I have never heard of a legitimate society that po= sts their application on the internet.
I also noticed that the URL for the site is not a "owned" URL such as NEH= GS has, and the link has the word "personal" in it. I found that to be a bi= t fishy.
In checking the Genealogist's Address book, there are plenty of societies listed, but not this one.
When I sent a message requesting more information regarding the membershi= p benefits, costs, etc. I received a slightly nasty reply telling me to re= ad the membership pages on the web site. Not a single offer to receive more info via snail mail.
I sent a another message to the person who responded to my original e-mai= l, told him I read the membership pages but still had questions. I attempte= d to explain to him that I only wanted verification that this was a legitim= ate society, that internet pages gave me no guarantee. Anyone can put up a s= ite and claim they are a society. He again responded that if I would read th= e membership pages my questions would be answered.
My 2 cents worth... I don't think they are legitimate and use extreme caution!

For anyone interested, I lived in Stow, MA from 91-96, right down the
street from the former Whitney property....the town is well aware of the role of the Whitneys in it's history, it's very well documented....There are currently two standing Whitney houses...one, on Whitney Road, is a large gray house, now a private residence, the other, on rt. 117, is a large white house, now a retirement home. for anyone living anywhere near there, it may be interesting to drive by the houses, and go to the town hall and pick up the town history books.

I have seen this before, more on a local level. Our local Genealogical society here was offering at one time certificates as being a "First Family" in the area, all you had to prove was that your ancester was in the specified are before a given date. That sounds like all this is, no benefits, just a certificate, but I believe that at the local level there was no fee.

(snip) To be frank, I have been suspicious of the first families from their first posting. We get nothing in return for our $20--no updating of information--- nothing but a certificate. As one of our trusty reliable advisors on this site told me, "for the information they are getting, they ought to pay us rather than we pay them." That First Families certainly sounds like a scam (snip)
And in response to a question about First Families that asked about the names of two men -
(snip) Yes! The man I spoke of who told me to see the membership pages was Ryan Jackson.
I received another e-mail last night from "Harold" (no last name given) offering to assist me with my application. I explained to him why I believed this society to be a scam and told him no thank you.
I assume you've heard of these two characters before? (snip)
'Nuff said.

These smaller files should load more rapidly than the old ones at Tim Doyle's website, <http://www.outburst.com/whitney/>. Still to come: 1860-1880.
Enjoy!

Hi. My name is Lori Remmey. I am a descendent of Nicholas Cady and Judith Knapp. My family information lists John Cady's birth date, which I have confirmed from a book of births, deaths and marriages for Watertown, MA, as 15/1/1650/51. He was the first of eight children, followed by Judith, James, Nicholas (died @ 5 Mo), Daniel(my line B. 11/27/1659), Ezekial, Nicholas, Joseph and James. The story is that Nicholas was apprenticed to the ships Captain, William Knapp and upon landing in Mass. Bay Colony, he married Judith Knapp, the Captain's daughter. They settled in Watertown and began populating the new world. Hope this helps. Cheers.

I also have KNAPP/WHITNEY connection in my database -- Lori, do you have any more on this person? John KNAPP, Jr. b. 11 Dec 1688 married on 3 Jul 1715 Mary WHITNEY (b. 21 Apr 1694) daughter of Joseph Whitney and Martha Beach.
And I would be interested in knowing the parentage of: Elizabeth KNAPP, b. 21 Feb 1655 Watertown, married on 11 Sep 1674 Samuel SCRIPTURE.

According to pp. 1144-1145 of The Great Migration Begins by Robert C. Anderson, Judith's surname was KNOPP rather than KNAPP.
There has been some speculation over the years as to whether or not her father William KNOPP was related to Nicholas KNAPP, since they were both of Watertown MA and the names are so similar, but evidently there is good evidence to support the argument that these were two separate and distinct families.
An article entitled "English Origins of William and Judith (TUE) KNOPP of Watertown, Massachusetts" appeared in NEHGR 147:315-328. I would be happy to mail you a copy of this article and the GMB pages if you don't have access to them.

(or so my grandmother tells me)
As seems to be the case when an ancestor has a "known" last name, my grandmother asserts that our Whitney's are related to Eli Whitney, cotton gin inventor, but we have not substantiated this claim yet.
I believe Caroline and Thomas moved to Northern California around that 1860s, and might have died here. Still need to check on that. But if anyone can provide any insight on these individuals in Maine, I would appreciate it!

I would be most grateful to anyone willing or able to provide information on the above.
I must also add a thanks to the folks who have invested tons of personal energy into the WHITNEY list. In my opinion, it is by far the most comprehensive, well organized, reliable, and accessible list to which I subscribe. My hat is gratefully off to you all!

First of all, Nathaniel-3 and Sarah (FORD) WHITNEY [Benjamin-2, John-1] had two daughters Lydia-4, one b. ca. 1718, and d. 14 Jan 1719/20, York, ME, and the other b. 22 Jul 1726, York, ME, and d. 23 Mar 1728, York, ME. Sarah (FORD) would have been 51 years old on 6 Dec 1736, so it is surely not this couple who were the parents of your Lydia (WHITNEY) BRYANT.
Second of all, there is a Lydia-5 WHITNEY, b. 6 Dec 1736, Biddeford, ME, dau. of Nathan-4 and Lydia (YOUNG) WHITNEY [Nathaniel-3, Benjamin-2, John-1], whose further history I do not know.
Thirdly, there was a Lydia-5 WHITNEY, b. 20 Feb 1735/6, Brunswick, ME, dau. of Samuel-4 and Lydia (-----) WHITNEY [John-3, Benjamin-2, John-1], whose further history I do not know, although she was still living in 1751.
There was a Lydia-5 WHITNEY, b. 2 May 1737, Plainfield, CT, dau. of Ezekiel-4 and Sarah (PARKE) WHITNEY [Ebenezer-3, Richard-2, John-1], no further record.
There was a Lydia-5 WHITNEY, b. 18 Nov 1732, Mendon, MA, dau. of Jonathan-4 and Lydia (JONES) WHITNEY [Jonathan-3, Benjamin-2, John-1], who m. 12 Dec 1754, Samuel BOWKER.
Clearly either of the first two above could have been the bride of Stephen BRYANT.
This is all the Lydia WHITNEYs born in the 1730's of which I have any record. Can anyone tell what the subsequent history of any of the above three untraced Lydia WHITNEYs might have been?
Regards,
Robert

Hugh D. McLellan, "History of Gorham, ME.," compiled and edited by his daughter Katharine B. Lewis, Smith & Sale, Printers, Portland, 1903, p 827, gives the children of Nathaniel Whitney and Sarah Ford. There were two Lydias, the first died 1720, and the second Lydia is born 22 July 1726, d 23 Mar. 1727/8.
on page 827, McLellan gives the children of Nathan, son of Nathaniel and Sarah Ford Whitney. In this family is Lydia, born 11 December 1736. No information is given regarding her life or marriage.
No other Lydia in the Whitney section of McLellan's book has a birthdate which might match with the Lydia mentioned by Bryant Kimball. I suspect that the Lydia married to Stephen Bryant did not come from the Gorham Whitneys.

Shaunie and I are tracking this family together. I will be happy to share what little information I have about Clarissa Whitney Lewis. Unfortunately her death record only states Whitney under her father's name and nothing at all under her mother's name so we also have little to go on.
According to her obituaries (I have posted them at <http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/7784/geneal.htm>) she left 162 descendants upon her death.
Clarissa Arminia WHITNEY b 22 Sep 1821 Erie Co., PA - d 23 Sep 1917 Dallas Co., IA
m. Nathan G. LEWIS 1840 (location unknown, but probably Ohio where they settled in Gallia Co. before moving to Champaign Co., IL and then on to Dallas Co., IA). 1. Augustus M. LEWIS (1 Jul 1842 Clark Co., OH - 8 Feb 1873 Dallas Co., IA) 2. John Nathan LEWIS (16 Jan 1848 Clark Co., OH - 8 Jun 1921 Dallas Co., IA) 3. Mary LEWIS (ca1847 OH - ?) 4. Benjamin W. LEWIS (ca1850 OH - 25 Dec 1874 Dallas Co., IA) 5. James Nelson LEWIS (15 Dec 1855 OH - 20 Nov 1874 IA) 6. William H. LEWIS (1857 OH - 1915 IA) 7. Charles W. LEWIS (1859 OH - 1942 IA)
I am tracking Abel WHITNEY as Clarissa's father. He was in Erie Co., PA at the time of Clarissa's birth. I find an Abel WHITNEY in Trumbell Co., OH (which was adjacent to Geauga Co. where Nathan was living) in 1840 but the ages of the two Abels don't match so I question whether I am tracking the same person.
I'm sorry that I don't have a lot of additional information to help you but I will send you a message when I can confirm a connection to Clarissa's father.

Dear Bryant:
As far as I can tell from our database, and from Robert Ward's Six Generation study of the descendants of John and Elinor, if the Lydia you want was born 6 Dec 1736, she was the daughter of Nathan-4 Whitney (Nathaniel-3, Benjamin-2, John-1) and Lydia Young, born at Biddeford, ME. Since Saco and Biddeford are only a few miles apart, it seems as if this might be a possible candidate for the marriage you cite. It does not appear in the VR's we have from Pepperellborough/Saco, but it might well be in Biddeford, which I don't have.
Sincerely,
Allan E. Green

'Whitney Genealogy' by Fred Farnum Whitney (pub 1977) (contact Katherine Ryder Whitney, Chelsea VT to get copy, it is a small town, so that should be a good address, she was still alive in 1993 and has a son Merrill in Chelsea) lists on page 13 the following.
John Whitney (Thomas, Benjamin, Joseph, Joseph, Jonathan, John) b. Dec. 18, 1821, Tunbridge, Vt.; d. Mar 19, 1855; m. Apr. 2, 1850, Lorinda Bragman, Washington, Vt., b Oct. 8, 1831. m. This book depends in large part on Pierce and is not well documented. There
is an obvious error above on his death, and is probably an error in copying
from Pierce.
Pierce lists this John as # 2989, gives the Mar 19, 1855 date as death of first wife, gives second marriage on Sept. 27. At the time that Pierce was writing John was still alive. My copy of Pierce is annotated (by my father???) on the above line of Fred with [Elizabeth (Berry) Webster]. The handwriting is hard to read and it could be (Perry).
Pierce lists Fred as #5650, gives marriage date of Mar. 2, 1882 says wife b Sept 30., 1855, with children Susie E (5-16-1883), Harry F (8-11-1884), Emma E (4-27-1889), Aura E and Ora E (6-5-1891). Does not list a son John. Does this mean that John was born after Pierce gathered his info? (Book came out 1895, clearly contains info from 1891)
(I trace back to John and Elinor six or seven ways but not through this big batch of Tunbridge Whitneys. My main line comes from Peter and his son Jonathan who came to Tunbridge from CT after the Revolution.)

I think your Lucy WHITNEY must be the same as Lucy-5 WHITNEY, dau. of Joshua-4 and Anne/Anna (BLODGETT) WHITNEY [William-3, Joshua-2, John-1], b. 28 Apr 1739, recorded in Preston, CT (Vital Records 2:31) and also in Tolland, CT (Vital Records 1:134). These families are very confused in Frederick Clifton Pierce's _Whitney Genealogy_. A helpful reference is Dumas, David W., ed., "Bacon-Adams-Whitney-Kingsbury Family Record," _New England Historical and Genealogical Register_, CXXXVIII (1984), pp. 32-38. I have tried to reconstruct them below for you.
Joshua-4 WHITNEY, son of William-3 and Lydia (PERHAM) WHITNEY [Joshua-2, John-1], b. 1 Nov 1714, Groton, MA (VR). He m. Anne/Anna [BLODGETT (Whitney Gen.)], date and place unknown. Their children that I know or suspect are:
1. (?)Abigail-5, b. say 1735, m. 10 Sep 1757, Eliphalet JEWELL (Whitney Gen.), "of Canaan", m. Eliphalet TRUMBLE ("JEWELL" in Rudd's book), "of Salisbury", 20 Sep 1757, by Rev. Hello WRG:
The "Official" Henry Whitney (of Long Island & Conn.) Database has been updated. This new release = CTWHIT3 = can be downloaded from the following web site:
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/jwmuse/files.htm
CTWHIT3 contains 6271 Individuals and 1953 Families -- much larger than when I started compiling it about 8 months ago. I encourage everyone to download this new file and review it.
Note: The file is a "zipped" Gedcom. You will need software similar to WinZip (pkunzip etc.) to unpack it before importing it into your genealogy software. Contact me if you cannot use the zipped version.
For CompuServe members, find the file in the ROOTS forum--Gedcom Files, with the name: CTWHIT3.ZIP (It should be available in a day or two.)
Enjoy!

I am STILL trying to place my Russel (one L) WHITNEY in VT. I now am working on the supposition that Russel is a family name and perhaps the surname of Russel WHITNEY's mother from VT. I have located on the 1800 census several RUSSEL families in Mt. Holly, Rutland Co, VT and several WHITNEY's in Rutland, Rutland, VT. Does ANYONE have a Russel female who m. a WHITNEY male about 1790 +/-, or anyone with a HURLEY connected to a RUSSEL or WHITNEY? Help, plz. Sherrill Madden

Sherrill: In our Henry Whitney database, there is a NANCY RUSSELL, b. abt 1768, Kent, NY; d. 27 Mar 1827 Patterson, Putnam County, NY who married SILAS WHITNEY, b. 15 Aug 1769 Fairfield, CT.; d. 20 Feb 1854, Peekskill, Westchester County, NY. 8 children listed. They married 10 May 1788 in Kent, NY.
He is SILAS WHITNEY-6 (Aaron-5, Samuel-4, Richard-3, John-2, Henry-1).
The above cities are in the Southeastern part of New York State -- but it's possible that one of their children migrated to Vermont.
Children of Silas Whitney and Nancy Russell were: Curtis Russell Whitney b. 1792 Silas Whitney b. 1794 Bradley Francis Whitney b. 1796 Peter Radcliff Whitney b. 1798 Aaron Thomas Whitney b. 1800 Thomas Aaron Whitney b. 1805 Washington Silas Whitney b. 1807 Nancy Ann Whitney b. 1807

Jeanne, thanks for the information. The next logical question is: Did Nancy have a sister that also married a WHITNEY? This Russel WHITNEY had a son ROYAL EDWIN whom I think is related to the ROYAL J. in Ossining, NY but cannot prove anything. These are the only 2 ROYAL's I have found.

Someone was looking for a Russel Whitney from the Henry line. I have a biography of James Whitney, (Benjamin, Daniel, Henry, John, Henry) and among his eight children he lists a son, Russel Whitney, b. at Romulus, NY, 30 Aug. 1810, m. Angeline Rogers. I doubt if Russel is a family name, by the way.

I just returned from a trip to Michigan, where I was reasearching my line of Whitneys. I collected a lot of Whitney stuff, but one of the most interesting was this, the intro says: "The records which follow were copied Dec 29, 1939 by Harry D and Bertha Chapman for General Richardson chapter DAR, Pontiac, Mich. from the 'Connecticut Hill Cemetery' in the township of Newfield, Tompkins County, NY. This cemetery is surrounded by a vast tract of land known as the CT. Hill State Game Refuge. This plot once sacred to the memory of these pioneer people is now filled with bramble and trampled by deer. A great many of the headstones are down or broken and in a few years all inscriptions will be obliterated. Mute evidence to the march of Time!" Among the inscriptions:
Ezra Whitney d. Nov 28 1874, aged 77 yr. Elizabeth Whitney, his wife d. Oct 3 1900, aged 94 yr 11 mo 15 da Sylvester J. s. of Ezra and Elizabeth d. July 17 1857 aged 11 yr 5 mo 27 da Ruth Ann dau of Ezra and Elizabeth d July 17 1857 aged 22 yr 9 mo 27 da
I believe this is the Ezra mentioned by both Pierce and Phoenix as the son of James, of Newfield, CT. They both mention him because of the Samuel error by Phoenix, but neither book mentions a wife or children, and neither know what happened to him, although both speculate. Well, here he is, anyway. This finally eliminates him as a candidate for my own ancestral Ezra Whitney. If anyone has any information on Ezra Whitney, b. 1791, Conway, MA.,(Joel, Jonathan, Jonathan, Jonathan, Benjamin, John), please let me know. He is my new prime suspect. Thanks, A. Whitney Brown

DEAR A. WHITNEY:
RE your E. Mail July 13, concerning Russell Whitney I am interested very much in your biography of James Whitney. I have been
looking for three years for my Great Grandfather Daniel James Whitneys parents with little or no luck. He was born in about 1834 in New York. I found what I am sure was his mother Polly Whitney, along with offspring Sarah Reese, James Whitney, (who I am positive was GG Daniel James Whitney), Josiah, Lucy , Seneca, William and Lucinda Whitney in the 1850 Census, page 177, Line 503, for Iroquois County, Census District No. 1. Also have record of James marriage to my G Grandmother Dilly Jane Flint in Kankakee, Illinois, July 26, 1855, they moved to Dekalb, Illinois where my Grandfather Harvey James Whitney was born June 4, 1856, followed by his brother, Delmar, then they moved to Wisconsin where their son Benjamin and Daughter Ida, were born; thence to Anderson County, Kansas, where their son Marquis was born in 1868.
Have never been able to find Polly's husband who was born in New York, as was
GG FAther Daniel James, and also all the other children of Polly listed above were born in New York. From entry on census showing Polly's age as 46 in 1850, she would have been born around 1804 in NY.
I thought as you mention a James, also a Daniel in yours from Romulus NY.
that there might be a possibility of a connection to mine listed above.
Shall appreciate your advice. Ray Whitney, Topeka, Kansas,

Elizabeth Whitney, b. 15 Sep 1776, First Church of Rockingham, Rockingham, Windham Co, VT, daughter of John-5 (John-4, Isaiah-3, Thomas-2, John-1) and Elizabeth (Sawtell) Whitney.

I received an email yesterday from A. Whitney Brown <[email protected]> which included the following WHITNEY data:
You probably already know, since you are so thorough, but in the "Biographical Review of The Leading Citizens of Livingston and Wyoming Counties, NY" there is a biography of Royal Whitney, Jr. (Royal, Ezra, etc) It states that his wife was Mary Elsie Boylan, a daughter of Samuel and Betsy Boylan, among the earliest pioneers of the county, who owned over a thousand acres. It then gives her siblings, Harris, John, Firman, Isaac, Christopher, Samuel and Fanny. I have the will of this Mary E. (Boylan) Whitney if you are interested. In addition, I found a land record that Ezra and Emily A. Whitney of Burns, Allegany, sold 26 acres in Conesus to Thomas Holmes in 1874. These must be your Whitneys.
If you ever run into any information about an Ezra Whitney b. abt 1790-1800 who married Julia Pelton in Livingston County in 1822, or any other contemporary Whitneys you can't place, please forward. I believe they also lived in Allegany County for a while, and I often run into your Whitney Family in my researches.

I am attempting to do a survey of WHITNEY gedcoms, where they are, what the hold, etc. If anyone can help fill in the blanks below, I would appreciate it. If the John WHITNEY database doesn't have an online home, I would love to host it on my server. I would be willing to mirror all of the gedcoms here as well.
When this list is a little more complete, I'll create a webpage with this information. If any of the 'keepers of the databases' can fill me in on the status of future updates, that would be helpful information as well (i.e. Next expected update: circa Fall 1998).

Hi:
Found a resource that I tied into that has given me some good info and thought I'd pass it on.
This consists of starting with a tfel of a Revolutionary War couple, with links to pages where the researcher has researched each line of ancestry of each person back to the immigrant ancestor.
The tfel numbers go to 30,000, probably a couple of hundred New England ancestors, and maybe 40 or so immigrant New Englanders.
He gives fairly complete research data, bio data, sources and bibliographies on each line.
If one of your lines is one of his, you may find something of value there. If you are a New England researcher and have found 40 immigrants to date, chances are fair to meddlin' you might have a match in this bunch.
The url is:
http://pw2.netcom.com/~mj_roman/atafel.htm
I'm trying something similar at my web page for each immigrant, although my "top page" is alphabetical (See Mom's Side of Family Histories at my web page) and I have a slightly different approach. I have about 20-30 immigrants at my page.
I wish more New England pages would do this kind of thing, ie focusing on who the immigrants are at that page and presenting info about them.

Dear Karen (and WRG):
Please forgive me for communicating with you this way, but your individual address is buried in my horribly slow laptop somewhere and I am too impatient to go dig it out. Your package of material on the notices in the Eastport Sentinal that mention Whitneys must have arrived just a day or so after we left on our trip to MD, DC and VA, and it didn't get looked at until last week. I would like your permission to reorganize the material chronologically and both post it to the maillist and send it to Robert Ward for posting in the resources section on his website. I think that was what we were planning for this material, but the exchange that led to your sending me the material was so long ago that I don't want to trust my memory - thus this note asking (again) for such permission.
Happy Hunting:-)

Dear Gordon and Connie:
Ginny asked me to drop a very brief note saying that we hope things are continuing to go extremely well with your recovery period, and that she tried repeatedly to get on-line tonight to write to you at some length, but the server at Union was busy all evening until she had to give up and retire - tomorrow being a work day again.
I've been spending a lot of time lately beginning my next professional career - doing genealogy work for others for pay. Mary Alice Lay hired me to try and find some more Revolutionary ancestors for her mother before she expires, and if the material that she passed over to me to get started from is any example, I don't see how they got what they have, which is about seven of them already. It seems like everyone in the local group has "gone in" on about a half dozen ancestors, so they all ride each others coattails and thus the Lays have not really done any solid basic family research. I'm afraid of what she will think when she finds out how many hours I have spent on this, just redoing properly what they hadn't done themselves, i.e., recording the full family groups, citing the sources and undertaking analyses based on known data to determine where to look for the next round. I'm going to have to have a conference with them fairly soon, and I'm only going to list the hours I actually spent "out there" doing the research. I'll ignore the hours I spend here organizing it and recording it on the computer.
Ginny will try again tomorrow night to write. All our love to you both.

Eunice Whitney was the wife of Nathan Whitney. Her maiden name was Eunice Cottle, born 10 Oct 1778 in Martha's Vineyard, Duke County MA, died 26 Aug 187 Proctor, Wetzel County WV. Nathan Whitney was born 10 Sept 1769 in Gorham, Cumberland County, ME, and died 4 Jun 1852 in Marietta, Washington County, OH. John Whitney was a son of Nathan and Eunice, born 04 in PA and died 4 Feb 1854 in Brownsville, Monroe County, OH. I am a descendant of Sampson Whitney, another of the sons of Nathan and Eunice. I would be interested in knowing your relationship with any of the above. I do have some land ownership information, most of which I obtained from the U.S. Land site on the Internet. Do you have any other information concerning any of these Whitneys, or their relatives?

Dear WRG:
Sorry about clicking on the wrong address last night - it was kinda late, and the folks for whom that personal note was intended are next to you-all in the address book. It may even be a fortuitous mistake, as Robert has responded with the information that he has a lot of data on the family whose surname came up as the one for whom I am trying to do some (semi?) professional genealogical work.

To the Whitney
I am looking for a Charles Vernon Whitney.
A friend of mine has lost contact with her dad since about 1968(according to
her deceased mother).
Her name is Misty Michelle born in September of 1966 at St. Vincents Hospital
in Little Rock Arkansas.
Her birth certificate gives the following information:
Father: Charles Vernon Whitney
Occupation: Truckdriver
Address: Ohio
Age: 31
Mistys mothers name is(was) Bobbie Lou Jackson. She was a nurse in Little Rock, AR and is from the Hot Springs, AR area. Mistys godmother informs her that Mr. Whitney was not a truck driver but that he was a laundromat owner in Little Rock at the time----Misty and I really don't know. Misty wishes no harm come to Charles Whitney or his family. She expects nothing from him. She is happily married and just wants to know if her father is alive and well. She would gladly like to know him if he wishes the same. If you can help in any way please contact me(us) at [email protected]. Thank you so much,

You don't have any descendants of Ruth Whitney and John Shattuck, and I am from that line. Some data from Salt Lake seems to disagree, but I've tried to read up on the Shattuck line, and this is what I read in books on Shattucks and Hillsboro, NH. I'll give a short version of it here:
Ruth Whitney b 1645 m (1) John Shattuck b 11 Feb 1647 John Shattuck b 4 Jun 1666 m Mary Blood b 1 Sep 1642 Jonathan Shattuck b 29 Jun 1693 m Elizabeth Chamberlain John Shattuck b 12 Mar 1724 m Elizabeth Shattuck b 17 May 1728 Nathaniel Shattuck b 5 Jan 1764 m Hannah Ball Gardner Shattuck b 5 Mar 1795 m Silence Warren William Gardner Shattuck b 14 May 1819 m Harriet Burdett Dyer Joseph Chapman Shattuck b 25 Nov 1846 m Eliza J Gould Caroline E. Shattuck b 21 Aug 1883 m Roy W. Allen Mary Velma Allen (adopted name: Nancy Hollingsworth) b 12 Jan 1913 m
Neal Adams Stanford
Barbara Anne Stanford (me) b 4 Dec 1939 m Keith Thomas Mason We have 2 daughters, Ruth Anne Mason and Beth Louise Todd Mason, and a
son, Paul Thomas Mason who died when he was 6, following open heart surgery. My aunt Barbara was from the same line as my mother and was also adopted by Mrs. Hollingsworth. I have 2 brothers, a sister, and a cousin and some have children and grandchildren.
I know it can look confusing by some charts, but from my reading, Ruth
Whitney and John Shattuck did have these offspring. If I am really wrong about this, please let me know. Thanks.

I have my first one-person show of my work up in a gallery in Kingston, NY if anyone lives nearby-- the opening is August 4.

Sounds like a tough one! If it were me, I would exhaust every Anderson Co., TX record for that time period--write to the county library or historical society, and check the Family History Library Catalog on the computer at a Family History Center, using all possible sources available for traces of a clue. Death and cemetery records for the mother? Follow up on all death certificates and marriage certificates for Mary and siblings. Play detective!! Good luck. Thank you Ellen for sending me your line of TRAVIS / WHITNEY families. Your envelope arrived snail-mail the other day. I'll look over it and let you know I have any questions as I add it to our database. (Please send me your e-mail address again! Thanks.)
For the rest of you Whitneys - Ellen's line connects to Henry Whitney of Long Island and Connecticut. She sent me information on the descendants of:
PHEBE WHITNEY, b. 12 Dec 1777 and d. 10 Feb 1866; married on 4 Jan 1797 in Yorktown, New York to JOHN TRAVIS, b. 11 Sep 1774 Cortlandt, Westchester County, NY and d. Feb 1832 Yorktown, NY.
This is PHEBE-5 WHITNEY (Jeremiah-4, Nathan-3, John-2, Henry-1), daughter of Jeremiah Whitney and Eva Youngs.
Her husband, JOHN TRAVIS, was the son of James Travis and Phebe.
I'll be going out of town for about a week in the a.m... Will play "catch-up" with all e-mail when I return. Hope everyone is having a wonderful summer!

Dear WRG:
I am continuing to try to extend many of the lines beyond Robert Ward's outstanding 6-Generation study of the descent of John-1, using the Vital Records to follow the lines down to children of the 7th and 8th generations wherever possible. In the process I come across little oddities occasionally.
I just found one that I have to throw out to see if anyone has anything to contribute to what I think might be an interesting line of descent if we could follow it up. In Leominster, MA, I found a marriage for:
Charlotte B. [Whitney], of Lunenburg, and Hiram Walker, Jan. 20, 1842.
I seem to remember from my youth that there was a Whiskey by that name. I would be curious to know if this Hiram Walker was indeed the man for whom that beverage was named - and why!
