Does anyone have any WHITNEY family members who settled in Niagara County, NY? I am stuck! Russell WHITNEY b. VT (place unk) 1801. His son Royal and his (Russell's) wife moved to Lockport, Niagara County, NY and I have them there. If there is someone who has family in this location may be connected. Sherrill Madden

With regards to the Gum chart that takes John Whitney back to Adam.......I
have seen that chart several places, probably one of which was in the
Seattle library, since that is where I first saw Pierce's book. Some
interesting thoughts on this chart:
1. DNA studies done by a group of University professors ( Wilfred Griggs and Allan Wilson and colleagues) have led them to postulate that the entire human race descends from a single maternal ancestor, whom they have decided to call "Eve." (Some of this research has been featured on the Discovery Channel.)
2. The source for the first section of the chart (supposedly 49 generations)from Adam to King Zedekiah, is the Old Testament. King Zedekiah's daughter who reigned BC599-578 married, according to the second section, the first King of Ireland. The Irish kings go to generation 103 and thence to the Kings of Argyleshire. And from there to the Scottish sovereigns, with the sources being taken out of David Starr Jordan's "Your Family Tree", the Hist. Collections of the Jos. Habersham Chapter of DAR, v. 2, 1902, and Browne's History of Scotland. Then there is a section thru the Kings of England and thru the Baskervilles to John Whitney. The last 20 generations come out of Melville's Book. (Currently in disrepute??) So, if you put faith in the Old Testament account of the generations, then you have to exert some faith in the British historians and those who quote them, and none of us is sure about Melville, or even Pierce--??
But I always thought the chart was interesting because of the Biblical record and King Zedekiah's daughter's connection. And with the pedigree diamond factor, if we had access to the records, hooking up to Adam doesn't seem quite so impossible. However, as you all well know it is hard to personally feel secure in ANY RESEARCH unless you have done it yourself, seen the documents and carefully taken each generation on back. ( Or unless you have a family history that documents each connection, which so few of them do.)

From: [email protected] Date: Tue, 2 Jun 1998 06:05:05 EDT Subject: Who asked about Damaris Whitney? To: [email protected]
Dear WRG:
I've been working on trying to use the VR's of Gorham, Cumberland, ME, to extend the descent of some of the families of that area beyond that which is reported in Robert Ward's 6-Gen study. The purpose of this is to contribute these extensions, documented as completely as possible, to the content of Whitny13, whenever it is time for that "version" to become available. In so doing, I came across a Damaris(-7) Whitney, b. 31 July 1797 in Gorham among the descent of Daniel-6 (David-5, Nathan-4, Nathaniel-3, Benjamin-2, John-1) and Abigail Stone Whitney.
I have a nagging memory that someone asked recently about a Damaris Whitney that I couldn't find in the db. I'd try to hunt through the e-mail of the past month, to see if I could find who asked this question, but at 5:25 AM I doubt I would find it. This may be the one needed, so I thought I would publish this short note in the hopes that whoever asked will see it and contact me if they would like more information.
Further to this project, in following down the line of Abner-7 Whitney (Jesse-6, David-5, Nathan-4, Nathaniel-3, Benjamin-2, John-1), I find a curious and unusual element in the birth of his children. Abner and his wife, Elizabeth Graffam, had FOUR sets of twins among a total of eleven children, including the first three births for this couple. Since this has not been a common characteristic among other Whitneys in the past, (although it has happened very rarely) it would suggest that this prediliction for twins must have come through the wife's family. Is there anyone descended from one of these sets of twins that could comment on the continuation of this tendency?
Happy Hunting:-)

Since all males with the Whitney family name have a Y chromosome inherited from their male ancestors, a geneticist wonders if there might be DNA markers that distinguish the Henry vs. John Whitney branches' Y-chromosomes.
Also let me ask the group: I have been asked to make up a genetics questionnaire/survey to distribute at a Wright family reuinion this summer. What questions should I include? What should _not_ be asked? How should the information collected be managed? I'll appreciate any advice or counsel, especially from those who may have attempted such a survey before.

Teri: In our Henry Whitney (of CT) database, we have one person with a similar name in the right vicinity. BUT, our records show she died in 1836 - which is before the child you mentioned was born. This is what we have:
Selina Whitney b. 10 Oct 1816, Walton, New York d. 13 Sep 1836, New York, New York
Her parents were: David Hyatt Whitney and Nancy Raymond Her lineage goes: Selina-6 Whitney David Hyatt-5,David-4, Joseph-3, John-2, Henry-1
My sources on her father, David Hyatt Whitney, show that information on him was from "Hall's Norwalk Records" 1973, p232 - He was a Revolutionary War veteran and received his pension in Walton, NY
I suppose that Selina's death information could be wrong in our records.
Good luck!

WFT Est. 1798-1887
While I realize this is probably an estimated time line for the birth or death, what does WFT stand for?? The translation eludes me ...

Jeanne, That's a reference to the World Family Tree CD series produced by Broderbund, and the information you describe is first found on the Family Tree Index, online, and then one can access CD owners who will graciously lookup and provide the complete info on the CD. Perhaps the source that provided that reference didn't know that they could pursue that to the CD lookup stage.PS I was thrilled for you to have made your big discovery in your family line recently! :-) Jan

Okay, World Family Tree - I wonder why I didn't know that?!? Maybe because I don't use Family Tree Maker. Now that I know what it is, why oh why is this information contained in the birthdate, deathdate and marriage date fields?? Shouldn't they be in the Notes or Sources?
I'm doing my best to clean up the Henry Whitney database. Would this information actually help someone if I left it there ... or should I move all those to the notes section? The info sure does make it difficult to match & merge!

Dear WRG:
Continuing the extension project with the ME Whitneys, I find in our Whitny11 database a number of children for Uriel-6 (Abner-5, John-4, Isaiah-3, Thomas-2, John-1) Whitney (sometimes called Royal) and Lydia Whitmore - in which the town [Gorham] is entered with a "?", and some occasional differences of dating. Here are the children of Uriel-6 and Lydia Whitney, as they appear in the Gorham VR's. BTW, the marriage date given in the Whitny11 db is in error according to these VR's. The date given there was 16 Dec 1787, but the VR says 16 Dec 1784.
Betsy Whitney, d. Uriel and Lydia, May 27, 1795 Bewlah ["Beulah" in original], d. Uriel and Lydia, June 3, 1793 Joel, s. Uriel and Lydia, Aug. 7, 1791 Mary, d. Uriel and Lydia, Jan. 21, 1787 Statira, d. Uriel and Lydia, Dec. 24, 1785 - Statira, [first daughter of that name of Uriel
and Lydia], (d.) Dec. 1785. [p. 172]
Statira, d. Uriel and Lydia, Dec. 1, 1789 - Statira, [second daughter of that name of
Uriel and Lydia], (d.) Aug. 11, 1794. [p. 172] - {not 1792 as appeared
in W11}
The birth of the first Statira in December of 1785 would tend to support the
1784 marriage year over the 1787 previously in the Whitny11 db. Of the six further children that are shown in Whitny11, #'s 7 (Sally H.) and 8 (Harriet) are NOT in the transcribed Whitney extracts from the Gorham, ME, Vital Records. The remaining four appear in the North Yarmouth VR's. I have searched all the other ME town VR's currently available without finding these middle two children, so I don't know where the family was between 1795, when the last child appeared in the Gorham VR's, and 1800, when the first of the children born in North Yarmouth appeared.
If there are any among you that can shed any light on the birthplace of Sally H. and Harriet Whitney, b. (according to Whitny11) 16 Dec 1796 and 28 Apr 1798 respectively, I would appreciate hearing about the source of these birthdates and where they took place. The db does have the Congregational Cemetery of Pownal, ME as the burial place, with death dates, for both, so the birth dates may well have been found on the tombstones.
There are children of some of these children in the VR's, and I will be adding them as well, so if anyone would like the information on them, please send me a note.
Happy Hunting to All.

I am at the very beginnings of tracing my mother's parents. I have only bare essential info-I am hoping to do some census checking soon, but that still won't get me birthdates. If anyone has anything that might match, I'd appreciate hearing about it. I am at a loss where to begin since I know so little about this branch of my family (and then there is my father's family-lots of vital record info, but absolutely no trace of them in the census! I think they were hiding! But that's for another list)
Here is what I know: My grandmother was Lottie Louise Whitney b. 2AUG1910 d. 22MAY1983 both in or near Rutland VT. She had 8 children plus twins who died at birth. She lived all or most of her married life in East Clarendon, VT. She married Solon Arthur Todriff who was born 1891 and died 1984. They were married sometime around 1930 (my mother was born 1936 and already had sibblings) We think Lottie's father's name was Carlton Delano Whitney. I think if I can confirm this, I'll be on my way. Anyone heard of Lottie or Carlton? I have recently had tremendous success on some of my lines and those I have researched for others by checking surnames on the Roots Surname List on the internet. (URL is: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/Genea/rsl)
This site is excellent for contacting by e-mail someone researching a surname in a SPECIFIC time and place. When you check the surname and see the list of other researchers, you want to look for a common county and a common migration pattern. This will usually guarantee a connection, particularly if you can see in the list of the researcher's other surnames, another match with yours. I have had an amazing amount of exact hits, without entering any given names, and I have quickly received by e-mail information and missing generations for me to research and prove.. Happy searching! Being not real saavy on genealogy yet, as we're still relatively new to this, I am unsure of how or where to research further on the Whitney's we have thus far found.
What we have ends with Ebenezer Whitney, below:
Ebenezer Whitney b. about 1747 m. Huldah Moorers 17-Jan-1769 d. 15-Aug-1810
Samuel Whitney b. 18-Sept-1784 m. Sarah Young 19-June-1806 d. 12-May-1869 Moses Whitney b. 04-Mar-1810 m. Charlotte Cromwell 02-Aug-1833 d. 19-Mar-1883 Henry L. Whitney b. 06-Apr-1852 m. Leatha L. We know Ebenezer was a pioneer settler of the Mirimichi River region of New Brunswick, Canada, and that he PROBABLY came from the New England area, but we are completely lost as to how to research this any farther, to see for certain where he did come from, when he was born, and whom his parents were.

At one time, @4 years ago, I was at the Portland, OR main branch of the public library where they have a complete collection of the NEGHR. I was randomly browsing through the volumes and I stumbled onto a section titled "The Smith's of Smithtown, Long Island, New York." As I browsed down the pages, I saw Richard Smith, with daughter Elizabeth who married John Whitney . . . with the ancestors and siblings of Richard Smith. Naturally, right at that moment, the lights flashed and it was time to close the library. I hurriedly called my friend, another genealogist over to look at it . . . stuck a pink marker in it and left, knowing I would come back and copy each page. Well, naturally, I didn't get right back there and in the next few weeks, the entire library moved into the new quarters and when I had a chance to find the chapter on the Smith's I could not find it. I can't find it in any index, I have inquired from others who have the volumes, and to no avail. Now I am in another town, a long way from the library. Was I dreaming or has someone else seen this? It seems only likely that if John and Henry were in Long Island, it seems very logical that Richard Smith, father of Elizabeth, could very well be from the Smith's of Smithtown, L.I., NY. I don't know that Isabella McVicker has any Whitney connections, but she certainly does have Poston ones (and I have a Whitney connection, the elusive Jabez).
Isabella McVicker was the daughter of William McVicker and Diannah Mercer of Hampshire County, Virginia (now W. Va.) William died 2 May 1815 in Hampshire Co. Diannah was the daughter of Moses and Diania (Morrison) Mercer. The children of William and Diannah were Isabella, Moses, Mary, Ellen (or Harriet), and Jane.
Isabella McVicker married John Poston 31 Jan 1825. Their children were William, Elias, Mary, and Samuel. Isabella died (in 1837?) and is buried in South Canaan Twp, Athens County, Ohio. (John married again, although it is difficult to be sure which of the several John Postons was the one who had been married to Isabella. I believe that he married Elizabeth Noyce 18 Nov. 1852. It is possible that he also married Sarah Dew 1 Apr. 1842. It is certain that the John Poston who married Polly Herrold on 9 Mar 1837 could not have been Isabella's husband since Isabella gave birth to Samuel on 7 June 1837. I think that there were at least 4 John Postons in Athens County at the same time, all cousins.)
Mary McVicker (Isabella's sister) married Ashford Poston 19 Nov. 1827 in Hampshire County, VA. Mary was listed in the marriage bonds of Hampshire County as the ward of John Poston.
Jane McVicker (Isabella's sister) married Bazel Johnson.

Dear fellow Rooters:
I am interested in finding information on the founding and establishment of a town in Washington Co, ME called Whitneyville, located just a few miles from Machias. I will be visiting the Library of Congress in a few weeks, and would appreciate being steered toward any books that would provide further information about this place and the members of the Whitney family involved in its birth. Further, are there published VR's for any other towns in this area other than Machias?
I am also interested in discovering whether the Reuben Whitney, who was born 20 July 1781 in Gorham, ME, is the same Reuben Whitney whose marriage to Hannah Hudson on 10 July 1801 that appears in the VR's of Machias, ME. Both parties are identified as being "of Plantation No. 22" - could this be what became Whitneyville?
Any assistance on the Whitney family in Washington County, ME, and particularly in Whitneyville, Machias and "Plantation No. 22" would be greatly appreciated.

Hi WRG! Thanks to Bill Whitney < [email protected] > our Henry Whitney of Ct. & LI database has over doubled in size!
Bill sent me 2 Gedcoms both of which contain wonderful notes on the lives of the people he included. I still have both Gedcoms intact and can e-mail them to anyone who has an interest in these lines.
The first Gedcom contained 613 individuals and 221 marriages for: ABRAHAM-4 WHITNEY (Joseph-3, John-2, Henry-1). We now have 10 generations descending from this ABRAHAM WHITNEY, who was born 23 Feb 1723/4 in Norwalk, Conn., and died Abt 1804 in Norwalk. Abraham married on 23 Dec 1750 in Huntington, Long Island, NY ANNE PLUMB. Anne was born on 14 Jan 1732 in Huntington and died in Norwalk, Conn. in 1806. They are both buried in the St. Paul's Cemetery in Norwalk.
Abraham and Anne had 10 children. Our database has descendants for their sons Samuel, Stephen and John. Their progeny went up to Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, and spread to St.Martins, New Brunswick, Shelburne, Nova Scotia and Swans Island, Maine.
Bill's 2nd Gedcom contained 3298 Individuals and 1027 Marriages for: SYLVANUS-5 WHITNEY (Eliasaph-4, Nathan-3, John-2, Henry-1). Before importing his data, we had only 3 generations descending from Sylvanus - we now have 9 generations.
Sylvanus Whitney was born 14 Feb 1749 in Stamford, Connecticut and died 24 Aug 1827 in Carleton, New Brunswick, Canada. He married 1st on 30 Sep 1772 in Norwalk, Connecticut BETTY HOYT, who was born 7 May 1751 in Norwalk, Conn and died 8 Dec 1808 in Carleton, New Brunswick, Canada.
Sylvanus and Betty had 10 children. We have descendancy now from 6 of those children.
Sylvanus married 2nd on 21 Feb 1810 in Carleton, New Brunswick, Canada SARAH SNIFFEN (b. ?? in Rye, New York; d. 13 Dec 1818 Carleton, New Brunswick, Canada), widow of ABRAHAM WETMORE, of Rye, New York, who died 6 Feb 1790.
Bill Whitney descends from Sylvanus Whitney and Betty Hoyt. He told me that this line went to Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, and married into most of the other Loyalist families and his line eventually went over to Nova Scotia. As he put it "This bunch is scattered all over the Maritimes and New England."
Since Bill mentioned he had more information on intermarriages of these Canadian Whitneys, I include his line below for those of you who might be interested in connecting surnames:
Henry-1 Whitney and ? John-2 Whitney and Elizabeth Smith Nathan-3 Whitney and Sarah Platt Eliasaph-4 Whitney and Mary Bishop Sylvanus-5 Whitney and Betty Hoyt Henry Platt-6 Whitney and Mary Brundage Silvanus-7 Whitney and Elmira Parker George Washington-8 Whitney and Josephine Porter Sylvanus Victor-9 Whitney and Edith Alena Forsythe Irving Forsythe-10 Whitney and Fannie Wood William George-11 Whitney and Margaret Jean MacLean
With additions like this, it won't be very long until I am ready to release our 3rd update of the database.

From: [email protected] Date: Sun, 7 Jun 1998 01:48:57 EDT Subject: Error in birthdate, ME VR's/Whitny12 To: [email protected]
Dear WRG:
I have noted tonight an error that has appeared in Whitny12 - a simple transposition of numerals in a date. In the VR's of Gorham, Cumberland, ME, for the birth of Patience Whitney, d. of Asa Whitney and Patience Weston. In Whitny12 the date appears as 7 Dec 1748, when in the vital records it appears as 7 Dec 1784. Please make this correction in your copies of Whitny12. This makes Patience the fifth (and last) child of this marriage, rather than the first.
Further to this husband, there is no date given in Whitny12 for his marriage to Phebe Hopkins, his second wife. The Gorham VR's give that date as 14 Jul 1785. Then, the second child of this second marriage is named Elsie in the Whitny12 database, but is given as Alice in the Gorham Vital Record. I have corrected this, putting the name Elsie in parenthesis as an alternative. Is that name from the McLellan History of Gorham? Is that also the source for the seventh child, Roxanna, born in 1800, who does not appear in the Gorham VR's among the births.
Happy Hunting!

Jeanne,
<< Joseph WHITNEY, born 1710, Chelmsford, Middlesex, MA, died
12 Nov 1786, son of Joseph WHITNEY and Rebecca BARGE. >>
Chelmsford VRs don't list this birth. They do list *other* children of Joseph and Rebecca WHITNEY, who are listed as marrying in Charlestown MA on 26 May 1706:
Abigail b. 5 Mar 1707 Rebecca b. 6 Dec 1718 Benjamin b. 18 Mar 1723/4 Daniel b. 20 May 1726 Jonas (birthdate unlisted) d. 4 Nov 1745
I don't know if this is because the family moved elsewhere and returned to Chelmsford or because records are missing.
<< Married 6 Dec 1737, Groton, Middlesex, MA, Abigail NUTTING >>
The Groton VRs list no children of Joseph and Abigail (NUTTING) WHITNEY:
Abigail WHITNEY, born 16 Aug 1740
Benjamin WHITNEY, born 27 Oct 1741 Lydia WHITNEY, born 10 Aug 1743
It looks like the family must have moved to Pepperell after Lydia's birth, since their deaths aren't recorded in Groton.

WRG & Vickie: As I enter all of these individuals into my personal database, I have at my left hand the printed copies of our "Whitney VRs". I'm finding a few discrepancies and am using the VRs as correct.
The line I found was in a GenServ Gedcom submission on the web site http://www.genserv.com So, like any other Gedcom, it can contain errors.
The descendancy runs through Benjamin Whitney (b. 27 Oct 1741) - son of Joseph Whitney and Abigail Nutting - who married 4 times! It appears from the data that many of Benjamin's children removed to Turnbridge, Orange County, Vermont, as many of them married and died there.

Victoria and WRG:
We have limited information about Nathaniel SLASON and Hannah WHITNEY in our Henry Whitney of Long Island and Ct. database.
Capt. Nathaniel Slason b. 2 Jan 1744/45 Stamford, Ct d. 1 May 1835 Darien, Ct
DAR records: "Nathaniel Slason (1745-1835), received a pension for service as a lieutenant and captain, Connecticut Continental line. He was born in Stamford, and died in Darien, Connecticut."
Nathanial married HANNAH WHITNEY in Stamford, Ct on 18 Apr 1787. Hannah was the daughter of ELIASAPH WHITNEY and MARY BISHOP and was born 21 Jan 1760 Stamford, Ct and died 17 Feb 1851 Darien, Ct.
According to our records, Nathaniel Slason was Hannah Whitney's second husband. She married first JOSEPH SMITH "of Huntington, L.I." on 18 Apr 1779 in Stamford, Ct.
We only have one child listed for Hannah and Nathaniel: Cornelia Slason who married Lewis Weed. No dates recorded so far.
>Additionally, when I 'clicked' on Nathaniel's name in the directory, I was unable to retrieve anything. Please let me know how to proceed.<
Updates to the databases are done about once per year. The info I found on Nathaniel is very recent and will be part of our next update (probably this fall). The web page links will be updated shortly after the updates are posted.

I see in the WRG bibliography a listing for
Hayward, Silvanus, History of the Town of Gilsum, New Hampshire, from 1752 to 1879, with Maps and Illustrations (1881), p. 416.
I don't see an "owner". Does some one have a copy? I've tried unsuccessfully to borrow one a few times, but no copies I've found are available for loan.
Specifically, I am looking for references to Benjamin Whitney, Jerusha Brockway, and Joseph Whitney. The "History of Surry, Cheshire Co., NH..." references mention of Benjamin in the History of Gilsum. Any info about either of the three would be appreciated.

Whitney-L has been pretty quiet the last few days so thought this a good time to talk "Polo." I read in old polo yearbooks where Harry Payne Whitney was a ten goal player in the year 1917 & still was in the year 1921. He is first mentioned in the year 1897. Great Britain vs. U.S., in the years 1909, 1911, & 1913, Harry played--the U.S. won. John Hay Whitney played in 1936, Argentina vs. U.S.--Argentina won. Just a little tidbit to put a smile on a face or two! Shirley

From: [email protected] Date: Sat, 20 Jun 1998 10:41:27 EDT Subject: Statira Whitney (2nd) Death date conflict To: [email protected]
Dear WRG:
This note is essentially for Jan Whitaker, but others may also be interested. Jan had sent me a set of print-outs of the descendants of Abner and Sarah Hilton Whitney, with extensions, as well as copies of pages from the McClellan "History of Gorham, ME" and other materials in her possession. I have been combining that data with material from the ME Vital Records to try and consolidate sources for all of the persons in this line of descent.
Jan, I must begin by complimenting you on the thoroughness with which the material you sent is documented. The series of citations for the entries is most impressive. That said, in the records you sent for the family of Uriel "Royal" Whitney, the death date for the 2nd dauthter named Statira is shown as 11 Aug 1792, with the McLellan History of Gorham cited as the source. However, the Whitney extracts of the Vital Records of Gorham give the date for this event as 11 Aug 1794. If you have a photocopy of the printed Gorham VR's, would you please check to see if this date was transcribed incorrectly? If that is not the case, then perhaps this is one place where McLellan may be in error.
Secondly, there are 1996 and 1997 dates entered in Whitny12 for burial of many of the members of this family. Are these dates from your submission of the GEDCOM to Jon? I have wondered if they represent the date that you found the tombstone for each of these people, or whether they perhaps have LDS significance. I find that perhaps my PAF family database program is less forgiving than your Reunion or Jon's FTW are, because every time I pass over such a date in working with these records, my computer beeps rudely at me because it is more than 100 years after the actual death date entered in the nearby field. If there is significance to these dates, I hesitate to delete them, but if not, then I would probably simplify my own life and remove.them.
I may find further, equally minor discrepancies, but will close this note now, so that I can send it while downloading my mail this morning. The vacation trip is going very well, we have been looking at houses here in Somerset Co., MD, as a place to which to relocate for our retirement. We have also been eating crab, crab, crab!! Last night we ate at a great place called "The Captain's Table" on the end of the peninsula at Crisfield, MD, and ordered something called "The Captain's Trio" - which consisted of three individual ramekins with Crab Imperial, Crab au Gratin, and Crab sauteed in butter and wine. It was the first time in my life that I couldn't finish the crab on my plate, so we "saved" most of the xauteed crab and put it in the little fridge in the mote. Today for lunch we will get take-out salads and bring them back so as to add all the lump crabmeat for a crab salad lunch. I will happily accept the envy of all!! <VBG>.

Hello all,
I crashed my email system and lost alot of saved mail discussing various discrepancies in the Whitney lines, so forgive me if this has been discussed and I lost it.
In reviewing the Genealogy Report on Robert Ward's page, I find I am having trouble reconciling the information on this couple. WHITNEY, Thomas was born 1627 married Mary KEDALL on 11Jan1654/55
According to the notes Mary was born in 1599, making her 55 years of age at the time of the marriage. I could accept an unusual 28 year age difference, but I do not believe she could have given birth to 11 children after the age of 55.
I did not have a birthdate for Mary, so this threw me. This does not compute. What am I missing here?

I went for 2 days and stayed for nine - leaving reluctantly. Anyway, If you are looking for a good place to stay - try the Hyman House B & B in Princess Anne, Somerset Co., MD. Edna Mae and Chuck Nittel, the owners, are wonderful people. I only stayed with them for those nine days and they are still like family to me. Enjoy the rest of your trip. Hi:
I am looking for info re the ancestry of Abigail Whitney, b 04/11/1762 or 3, married Elijah Bruce in Vermont. I have seen the fellow below, with a different mother, Abigail Marstop, listed as her father elsewhere.
Did he marry two ladies named Abigail, or was the lady a widow and there are two names, or is one completely bogus? Anything else on the family would be appreciated. I have accounted for 700 descendants of just one of her children.
This is from the Whitney data base, with no children showing:
Nathaniel Whitney
ID: I00169 Sex: M Born: 22 Jul 1728 in Westborough, Worcester Co., Massachusetts Died: 1 May 1776 in Grafton, Worcester Co. Massachusetts
Father: Nathaniel Whitney, b. 23 Jan 1695/96 in Watertown, Massachusetts Mother: Mary Child, b. 1699 in Westborough, Worcester Co., Massachusetts
Family 1 Abigail Josling, b. 5 Sep 1735
Married: 26 Dec 1753 in Westborough, Worcester Co., Massachusetts
______________-
Is this the father of my Abigail Whitney who married Elijah Bruce
circa late 1700's, in probably Vermont, maybe Mass?

Has anyone done work on the Central Vermont Whitneys? I have not found my branch in the census materials for the turn of the century and wonder if the family may have come from somewhere else (late 19th c-to 1908). I read all the central VT county census lists and no hits. I have the following info:
Carleton Delano Whitney m. Eva Chapin daugher Lottie Louise b. Aug 1910-location unknown, but elder sister Harriet was born 1908 perhaps in Goshen and younger brother in Proctor some years later.
If anyone has even general info on where the Whitneys in central VT came from, I'll go reading more census pages...

The intentions of marriage of Abigail-7 WHITNEY to Elijah BRUSE "of Newfain" is recorded in the vital records [VRs] of Westborough, MA, on 6 Jan 1781. She was b. 11 Apr 1763, Grafton, MA (VR), daughter of Nathaniel-6 and Abigail (JOSLING) WHITNEY [Nathaniel-5, Nathaniel-4, Nathaniel-3, John-2, John-1]. For her further WHITNEY ancestry, see the following webpage:
<http://www.erols.com/rlward1/whitney/john/john14.html#i258>
There was an Abigail-6 WHITNEY, daughter of Nathan-5 and Abigail (MARSTASS) WHITNEY [Thomas-4, Eleazer-3, Thomas-2, John-1], b. 3 Apr 1768, Brookfield, MA (VR). Nothing further is known of her.
Thus, you see, there was Nathaniel and Abigail WHITNEY, and also Nathan and Abigail WHITNEY. They were four distinct individuals. Claims that Nathaniel married Abigail MARSTASS are wrong. The confusion arose because Nathaniel's children were born in Grafton, and Nathan's marriage is found in Grafton, but Nathaniel was married in Westborough, and Nathan's children are found in Brookfield. Someone looking at Grafton VRs has assumed (wrongly) that the marriage in Grafton must apply to the man whose children were born there.
Any data on descendants of Abigail (WHITNEY) BRUCE you would care to submit in GEDCOM form to our database would be most welcome. Send it to Jon Aston <[email protected]>.

I've found the marriage that the "other" genealogy says is my mom, in the Whitney vital records here:
http://www.erols.com/rlward1/whitney/mass/grafton.html
The entry is:
Nathan of Spencer District and Abigail Marstass, Feb. 20, 1754.*
I have Marston in my records, which is from an FTM cd, where most of the other info matches the Whitney genealogy.
Note that all of this Nathaniel's children are listed on this page, the Grafton Vital Records Page, as from "Nathaniel and Abigail".
I believe the oldest is:
Nathaniel, s. Nathaniel and Abigail, Oct. 14, 1754, which is only eight months after the Feb 20 marriage, for whatever that's worth, which is probably nothing.
With all the Nathaniels running around, I can see where it's easy to get them mixed up.
Anyone have a clue which Abigail, for sure, is my mom??
Thanks

A number of years ago he visited the Lee Cemetery in Granville and saw the tall CHITTENDEN monument that lists Robert CHITTENDEN who died 15 Mar 1866. It must have mentioned his age at death because Alan figured Robert was born between 15 Dec 1785 and 15 Jan 1786. His wife Adah WHITNEY CHITTENDEN died 14 Feb 1865. It must have listed her age as 77 yrs 9 mo as he figured she was born May 1787. It also said she was the dau of Joseph WHITNEY and Anna EAMES. Also on the monument[?] it lists Robert and Adah's daughter Ada S. CHAPIN[?] and daughter Mary CHITTENDEN 1812-1873.
Alan descends from Robert CHITTENDEN's son Adonijah. He has Adonijah's family Bible which lists all of his children. He's looking for the parents of Robert CHITTENDEN, Joseph WHITNEY and Anna EAMES. Any help or clues you can give him would be VERY much appreciated.

Hello again!
The history of Niagara Falls, Niagara Co., NY, wouldn't be complete without Parkhurst WHITNEY, one of the earliest pioneers who settled in this area in 1810. He descends from (Capt.) Jonathan(5), Jonathan(4), Jonathan(3), Benjamin(2), John(1) according to his biographical sketch found in "Landmarks of Niagara County, New York" edited by William Pool, D. Mason & Co., Publishers, 1897, pg. 405, and according to the Descendants of John(1) and Elinor (__?__] Whitney that I found on Robert L. Ward's web page.
In the same book on page 408 there is a biographical sketch of his son Solon M. N. Whitney. Solon's sons were Solon, Drake and Solon 2d. Three of Parkhurst Whitney's daughters were Aseneth B. who married Piote DeKowalewski, Angelina P. m: D. R. Jerauld, and Celinda Eliza m: J. F. Trott.
There are brief mentions of other Whitneys who lived in Niagara Co. prior to and including 1897 if anyone is interested.
BTW, I noticed in the list of descendants that it said that Parkhurst died in Niagara Falls, ERIE CO., NY. Niagara Falls is in Niagara Co. I just thought I'd mention it. :-D
I'd be glad to furnish any information from the history books that I have that mention the Whitneys. Note, however, that I don't have copies of Niagara Falls census or any other records of Niagara Falls and can only recommend where you can write for that information. I'm certain that there's a lot of information on Parkhurst Whitney's family in the History Dept. of the Niagara Falls Public Library as the family was very prominent in the city. There's Whitney Avenue, Whitney Ave. School, Trott Vocational High School and Jerauld Avenue for instance. And the Three Sisters Islands above Niagara Falls were named after the daughters of Parkhurst.

Dear Group,
I want to publically thank Robert for the magnificent information he sent about the ancestors of Joseph Whitney. Robert, thank you, thank you, thank you, ad infinitum!!!
The minute I received the message, I called my friend Alan and told him the news. He couldn't believe it! :-D He just couldn't believe that I had posted the message just last night and received the whole nine yards today. He showed up at my door minutes later and we just babbled at each other over everything and anything! As I printed out page after page and handed them to him, he stuggled with a magnifying glass to read through them all--from John(1) of the 1500s through to Joseph(5) born 1753 and a Revolutionary War soldier. Absolutely unbelievable! And all the while we continued to babble at each other!
Alan is such a deserving person. He has devoted YEARS of his life to research of the history of the Town and Village of Lewiston, NY. In addition, he's a dedicated genealogist who has helped untold numbers of people researching their Lewiston families. Just the other day he took a Michigan couple to the Lewiston Cemetery and showed them exactly where to place the headstone they wanted to erect on the unmarked grave of her grandfather. It gives him such pleasure to do things like that.
I'm certain that a number of you have had that extremely rare experience when that elusive ancestor who you've been searching years for suddenly pops up out of nowhere. If so, I'm sure you can imagine how overjoyed Alan was this evening. No doubt he's still babbling to himself!!
Thanks a whole bunch again and may you all have a similar experience.
Good luck in your research,
Sincerely, Vee Housman

Hi Robert:
Found this analysis, by a Bruce researcher, of the "mix-up" of these two couples, which cites sources, and which supports your conclusion. It is here:

There is additional info on this Whitney line at this web site, all professionally done with sources cited.

Dear Vee:
How nice to hear from you on the Whitney list. I have previously enjoyed your flights of fancy on the Penna-Dutch list, as well as "subscribing" to your "Story LIst" for a while. Please forgive any typos, as we are travelling and I'm using a mini-laptop that sits on top of my wife's suitcase, which sits on a folding luggage rack. We're about six blocks from LC in a B&B, and have been visitiing NatArch., DAR Lib. and LC.
I was so glad to get your contribution a bout Parkhurst Whitney and his family. It's this kind of contribution that makes things richer for all of us. I can't speak for others, but I appreciate your kindness in sending it to us. I'll try to assimilate the information and then get back to you if I see anything else I might want to aski about.
BTW, Robert Ward and his wife Nancy took Ginny and me to dinner last night at a great French Restaurant in (I think) Laurel, MD, near where he lives. I had onion soup (French, of course), pork medallions with a marvellous sauce and finished off the evening with my usual favorite - Creme Brulee. Ginny had soup, Veal Somehoworother (another delightful sauce) and Profiteroles with Ice Cream and Chocolate Sauce. The Wards matched this pretty much except they went for the fresh fruit tarts. Yum!! We later went back to their house for more genealogical talk until I turned into a pumpkin and Robert chauffered us back to our B&B. We were MOST grateful for the hospitality and delighted to meet the Wards and get acquainted.
Again, Vee, I'm so glad you found the Whitney list - it's a great bunch of very nice people. Tell us more about your Whitney connections in your next posting.
All my best.

Subject: Jabez Whitney--Correction/Addition To: [email protected]
Dear WRG,
I just revisited Robert Ward's site after a long time away. (It really is impressive.) In the process, I looked up my elusive Jabez Whitney in the database maintained by Randy Winch and found that there are a couple of errors which may be set to rights.
The database says "Born: in of North Yarmouth, Cumberland, Maine."
It is not known where Jabez Whitney was born. He was "of North Yarmouth" at his wedding in 1804, but the N. Yarmouth VR do not list him as born there (consequently his father is unknown).
The database says "Died: 1839 in Chester Twp, Meigs, Ohio."
Jabez Whitney, his wife Abigail Milk Wheeler, and their children, Joseph I., Lydia, Thankful, Lucinda, Mary, Ann, John, Ebsey, and Miranda (Mirarella), moved from Meigs County, Ohio to Adams County,Illinois in about 1836. Jabez died in December 1839 or January 1840. An advertisement was placed in the local paper by Joseph asking for those with claims against Jabez's estate to present them for settlement. The three youngest children, John, Ebsey, and Mirarella/Miranda (spelled both ways in the probate papers) were specifically mentioned as minor children of Jabez in April, 1840, i.e., born after 1819 or 1820. (Probate records of Adams County, Illinois, Box 5, Case 102, 13 April 1840).
The database says "Thankful Whitney, b. 7 Jan 1806, in Lisbon, Lewiston, Maine."
Ethel Colby Conant, Ed., "The VR of Augusta to the year 1892, Vol I, Births and Marriages," Maine Historical Society, 1933, p 154, gives this birth and date but does not indicate the parents of the child. It cannot be the same Thankful Whitney. Consistent census records and other records show that Thankful is the younger sister of Lydia (not twin) who was born in 1806. The Thankful, daughter of Jabez must have been born in 1809, probably in Chesterville, Me., where they lived at the time. (Chesterville VR is silent on the matter.)
Addition:
The North Yarmouth VR record the intention of Jabez Whitney and Abigail Milk Wheeler to marry in Chesterville in 1804.
I think this is all correct.

H W B stands for Howard Worden Babcock-This is the best that I can make out from the letter. Some words are very difficult to read, and I have typed it as he seems to have written it. The letter and envelope is in the possession of my mother.
Also there is an envelope sent from New Orleans March 25 1863 to
Mrs. Worden Babcock of Hoosac Falls, New York. (The letter no longer exists. This Mrs. Worden must of been his mother, Fanny Whitney).

In regards to the Whitneys of Central Vermont, our family descends from Fanny Whitney (born Jan. 9, 1803), who married Worden Babcock. She was the daughter of Henry Whitney and Fanny Miller. Their records are found in Dummerston Vt. and Butternuts, N.Y. . The Whitneys from this area seemed to have all been around where the New York, Vermont and Massachusetts borders meet. Fanny Whitney later lived in Hoosick Falls, N.Y.. I hope this helps

Aren't coincidences in history interesting?
My 1xg grandfather was wounded at Port Hudson, LA on May 27, 1863, two days after the above letter. We have the Company Muster-Out Roll of June 22, 1864, with remarks: "Wounded at Port Hudson, LA, May 27, 1863, in body".
My 1xg, Henry Gilbert Baldwin, reported for duty at Brattleboro, VT. He married Helen Serepta Fisher, a Whitney descendant and "cousin" of your Henry Worden Babcock. She is:
John > John II > Nathaniel I > Nathaniel II > Nathaniel III > Nathaniel IV > Abigail Whitney m Elijah Bruce > Abigail Bruce m Nehemiah Willis Fisher.

I am VERY new at this, basically because I keep hitting dead ends only 2 generations back. Does any of this sound familiar? Here is my info. If you can send a link, that would be great. Thanks.
I am Charles Anthony Whitney, born Feb.4, 1951, in New Jersey. We lived in Neptune, NJ when I was small. My father was Victor Arnold (but went by Arthur) Whitney, born July 22, 1902 in St. Lawrence County, NY. Married Gabrielle Ducoudray Bateman in 1951. He died in October, 1963. He had one brother, Gerald, who lived in Syracuse, I believe. There was little or no family "bond" between them. I don't know why. Victor and Gerald were sons of John Edward Whitney, born 1877 in Prescott, Ontario, Canada, who was married to Arvilla Cecelia (no last name available). This is the only info I have for my family. Please help, if you can. Oh, here's the present generation. I married Pamela Dene Johnson, born Feb. 15, 1950, on Nov. 4, 1972. We have two children, Christopher Elliott, born Feb. 18, 1974, and Laura Kathleen, born May 16, 1979.

Dear Allen and all,
Yes, it's great to bump into you like this too. And from the very first post I saw on the Whitney list, I could tell right off that you're all my kinda people!
Allen mentioned my occasional flights of fancy and I thought I'd share one of the more genealogy-related ones that I posted to the Penna-Dutch list a couple of weeks ago. I have the feeling that you'll be able to relate to it.
Good luck in your research.

THREE LITTLE WORDS
The memory of a past experience just popped into my mind and I wanted to share it with you. It has to do with those three little words. No, not THOSE three little words, the three little words, "I FOUND him!!" Wow, the excitement that's contained in so few words!
They're the words each of us has always wanted to say. The words that are at the end of a long, long road of searching for an elusive ancestor--a road that has taken you years to travel. The words that tell the world that your research has finally paid off!
There you sat--at a microfilm reader or poring over a book or a sheaf of old papers in a Family History Center or a genealogical society research library or a historical society or the wonderful world of the court house. And there is that one precious moment when you see before your eyes the obscure reference that connects your known ancestor with the ancestor's father. You read it over a second time to make certain you weren't just dreaming and then when it finally sinks in, you declare out loud, "I FOUND him!!"
Of course, that immediately follows by a moment of embarrassment realizing that you have just disrupted the peace and quiet of the research room but when you look around and find everyone looking at you, you see that they all have smiles on their faces! They've all experienced a similar precious moment--or have always hoped to have one of them personally--and they're smiling in appreciation of how you feel. They are the smiles that show that they’re applauding you for your success and they are the smiles that let you know that they’re also members of that wonderful fraternity (or sorority) of genealogy. Non-members just couldn’t appreciate that moment if you tried to describe it to them.
Who knows but what all of us should put up a sign over our computer desk with only three little words on it, ”I FOUND him!!” Then when that feeling of defeat creeps over us that it’s a hopeless cause to continue trying to dig up that one ancestor who has eluded us for so long, we can look up at that sign and gain renewed determination not to give up. After all, if we gave up, we never would have the opportunity to tell the world that we finally succeeded.

Theodore,
I would be interested in anything you have on William Henry Whitney and wife Fanny Miller. Both of them died in Aurora, Erie Co, NY.
I have a g-g grandfather named Charles Whitney who may be connected to them. He was born in MA in 1823. He settled in Langford, Erie Co around 1864 which isn't too far from Aurora. Prior to then, he lived in the town of Jackson, Putnam Co, Ohio from at least 1852-1862. The 1860 Ohio census mentions a daughter named Fanny. The 1865 NY census calls her Elizabeth. She then disappears off of the census records. His daughter Mary is my great grandmother.
Thanks! Debbie Stelmach

Hello, Whitney List! Is there anyone researching Whitneys in Guilford, Maine? Especially in the early and mid-1800's? If so, let me hear from you. I'm still trying to learn more about my Aaron Whitney who died in about 1850 in Guilford. I haven't yet made the connection to John and Elinor! Some day it will happen. Wish me luck, folks! WRG I found a gedcom in Randy Winch's database which I would like to get more info on. Once again my trail brings me back to this family and have to question it.
Benjamin Whitney b. 7 Oct 1687 Stow, Middlesex, MA m. (2)Abigail Bridge. Their son, Benjamin, b. May 9, 1732 shows a d. Mar 1750/51. What evidence does the owner have that supports the fact that the Benjamin b. 1732 is the same who died Mar 1750/51.
Also, regarding Benjamin b. 1687, d. Oct 1737, where did he die?
Thanks for any info you can provide.

Dear Southern members of WRG:
This book happened to be sitting on the table at LC, at my workstation, so I looked in the index and - lo and behold - a Whitney entry. For what it's worth:
Christian Index Obituaries, 1880 - 1899, by May McKeown Overby
WHITNEY, RUTH, 77 yrs, b. NC, w. of Zeno W. Whitney, mother of Mrs. W. H. Wood, of Macon, GA. d. 9-1-1892, at dtr.'s home in Macon, 9 children, member of South Macon Bapt. Church.
Hope it is of some use to someone, if not, Jeanne can add it to the "unconnected" file.
Happy Hunting:-)

Robert..I sent away for a death certificate on my grandmother Emma Whitney. The NY State Dept. of Health sent the wrong one to me. Perhaps the info is useful to someone else in the Whitney line. Mrs Emma Whitney, wife of Russell Whitney was born in Saugerties NY. Maiden name was Knox. Father was John Knox who was born in Conn.
Mother was Margaret Schutt who was born in Saugerties NY.
Emma was born Jan. 13, 1856 and died Dec 15,1936.in Ulster Co. Saugerties, NY. Emma was buried in Mt. View, Saugerties, NY on Dec. 18, 1936. Death was caused by carcinoma of the bladder and arteriosclerotic heart disease.

Indeed, it was a memorable evening. It was a great pleasure to meet Allan and his lovely wife Ginny. They are great conversationalists and widely traveled. The restaurant is the Cafe' de Paris, in Laurel Lakes Shopping Center, Laurel, Maryland. I recommend it very highly. I had their filet mignon, which was superb, with potatoes au gratin, nicely complemented with an excellent Beaujolais! Ginny's veal scallop was breaded with a mushroom sauce. One item of particular merit was the bread, which was very authentic French, complete with holes, gray body, and chewy crust.
On Saturday the 27th, Allan and I met at the Library of Congress, and plowed through some more of the unpublished vital records of Massachusetts towns, as well as various other records on the WHITNEY family. The fruits of our labors will be posted, some to the list and some to my website.
The first posting is the vital records of Barnstable and Plymouth, MA:
<http://www.erols.com/rlward1/whitney/mass/barnstable.html> <http://www.erols.com/rlward1/whitney/mass/plymouth.html>
I have also determined that Adams, Fairhaven, Orleans, and Sandwich, MA, have no WHITNEY entries before 1850.
I have also discovered that the Library of Congress has a microfiche index to Massachusetts birth, marriage, and death records for the years 1841-1895. It will give you the name of the person, the town of the event, the year of the event, and the volume and page numbers. Presumably the latter lead you to the recorded certificates, which you would have to access by mail to the appropriate state authorities.
Can anyone access an index to the 1820 federal census for Alabama? Can anyone access an index to the 1810 federal census for Tennessee, of which only Rutherford County survives? If so, will you please send me the entries for WHITNEY families, if any? Those would complete my collection of indexes through 1840. Thanks a bunch!
Regards,
Robert

The MA State Archives has this same index. They may even have extended it,
since they hold copies of records up to 1905.

Dear Jack and Mary:
I was working Saturday at the Library of Congress with Robert Ward, and while there I copied some Whitney entries from a four volume series called "Maine Families in 1790. In an entry on p. 38 of Vol. 1, in an article about the family of Rev. John Chadbourne, I came across an entry for his daughter, Elcy (Elsie?) that included her marriage to a man called (here) Robertson Whitney. In it, Elcy Chadbourne is shown as having been born 29 Nov 1777, the second child of the marriage of Rev. Chadbourne, (b. Sanford 24 Mar 1752, son of John and Mary (Spinney) Chadbourne (VR), d. Dixmont 25 Feb 1831 (g.s.), m. Sanford 27 Oct 1774 Elizabeth Grant, b. Berwick 9 Jan 1752, bp First Church Berwick 8 Apr 1752, dau. of Daniel and Sarah (Cleave) Grant, d. Dixmont 23 May 1837 (g.s.)). Rev. Chadbourne was ordained 1797 and preached in Cornish, Lebanon, Buxton, Bethel, Limington, Harrison and Dixmont.
Elcy (Elsie) d. Newburg 1858 (g.s.), and was first married to a Samuel Sherbourne, Robinson/Robertson Whitney being her second husband. Nothing said about any children with either man. The article was supplied to the editors of this series by: Ms. Elaine Bacon, 2954 Cottle Ave., San Jose, CA 95125.
I hope this will be helpful to you.

Dear John and everyone in the WRG:
You asked> Perhaps I missed an earlier message describing this index. What do the town and year signify? Does the index refer to original source records that can be located and searched? Thanks.<
Have you ever seen the Census Index Books in a Library - slim volumes usually done by AIS (Accellerated Indexing Systems) out in Utah somewhere. This is somewhat the same thing, except it is for people who turn up in different kind of records - sort of a "they were there on that date" list. I can't call it a pre-1790 Census, because some of the dates are after that year. So, yes, I guess it is a listing of what is in a record of some kind somewhere.
In contrast, there is also a four volume series called "Maine Families in 1790" which is another attempt to make up for the lack of a good 1790 census. I have xeroxed every page in the four volumes that have Whitneys on them, and am integrating what I can with my much expanded version of the Whitney12 database. I will be posting all of those that I can't find connections for in W12 to the Whitney list as soon as I can (I can only type a short while on this dinky little IBM Thinkpad keyboard before my wrists start to hurt, so it will probably be after I get back home on Friday and get back to my beautiful Microsoft Ergonomic Split Keyboard [which is about the ONLY thing I admire about Microsoft]).
I also copied a few other Maine records that I will tell everyone about later also. Today at LC I worked on trying to find another way around the problem of who Thomas Whitney's father was - focussing on Cheshire, AND, for the benefit of the Southern Whitneys, I copied Whitney records from Bermuda and Barbados, which I will also post to the group soon. (Ain't I an awful tease) Robert already reported on our work Saturday on transcribing more MA Vital Records.
Tonight is the last night in DC, so we went back to my favorite Greek restaurant, where I had a big plate of Kalamata olives and some tamarosalata with warm pita for an appitizer, and roasted Lamb served with artichoke hearts and other veggies in an avgolemono sauce, all accompanied by ice cold Retsina. Egad, how I'm going to pay when Ginny puts me on the Scarsdale diet as soon as we get home this weekend.
Hope everyone is surviving either the heat, the thunderboomers and tornados or the fires. We've been pretty lucky with the weather, except for a couple of really hot days here in DC (i.e., 95+ heat)
More later.

Info from Robert Ward stated that "On 12 May 1749 in Marlborough, MA,
division of estate there belonging to Benjamin Whitney, late of Boston,
dec'd..."
The NEHG Register states he moved to Boston in 1737, where he died "in Oct. or Nov. of that year, aged 50 years."

I replied to George, but forgot to change the address so all of you could see it. Here it a copy:
George: I have been actively updating our "Henry Whitney of Long Island and Connecticut" database, to which you connect.
I do not have the ancestry of Henry Whitney, so I cannot confirm his parentage. I have not seen sources to prove that he is the son of Thomas Whitney and Mary Roach. Do you have confirmation?
According to our current information, Henry's second wife, SARAH SALMON (widow of Edward Ketcham), was ~not~ the mother of John Whitney (who married Elizabeth Smith). John's mother is unknown, at this point.
You may have just mistyped the marriage of Betty/Betsy Keeler and David Boland -- it should be 1770.
Otherwise, our records agree with yours.

She was born on Jan 31, 1773 in Warwick MA, married Phinehas Child in Roxbury, MA Apr. 25, 1777 and died Aug. 22 1852. She was the daughter of Daniel Whitney b. c1750 and Sarah Gay b. c1750, both in the vicinity of Warwick MA.
