WRG,

I suspect that the lady who wrote to me is concerned with one of the children of Henry Whitney of Chesterville, ME, but my files are currently boxed up and I can't lay my hands on the relevant folder at the moment.

I have suggested that she consult Robert and Tim's website (http://www.whitneygen.org/) and that she subscribe to this group, but perhaps one of you has the information at your fingertips.

I happen to have the children of Henry & Abigail (Walker) Whitney that Mike sent me earlier, data that he had dug out of the Vital Records of Chesterville, ME, FHS Film #010792. His guess without his records at hand is logical, especially since the mother's name was Abigail. However, an Abigail was not among the children listed, and another, Henry, is listed as having been born in February of 1804. The first Henry, the father, had a brother named Timothy, who also had children born around this time in Chesterville, but his daughter born in March of 1804 was named Rebeckah. So, unless Anne's birthdate was incorrect, or the name was not Abigail but Rebeckah, we don't have a match.

This same Henry Whitney DID have a daughter named Abigail Warren Whitney, born 26 July 1824, the only child with his second wife, Martha Warren, and seemingly named for his deceased first wife and his second. This Abigail died in 1836 in Chesterville, at age 12.

I have looked through all the other Maine families having children around the 1804 time and have found none with a daughter named Abigail, much less in that year. That is not to say that there wasn't one, just that I don't have her in my database.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. I'm looking forward to September, when I'll be able to run up to the Library of Congress at will from our new home in MD, and meet more of you who reside in the DC area.

Allan E. Green

P.S. I just leafed further through the North Yarmouth Vital Records, where Henry and Abigail's first two children were born, and noted that the infamous Abigail Milk Wheeler, wife of the mysterious Jabez Whitney of no known provenance, was from Chesterville. Perhaps this Abigail stems from the same source as Jabez??

Hezekiah's will was written 22 Nov 1797 and proved 7 April 1801 in Wolcott, Orleans, VT. His wife, Sarah wrote her will 27 December 1802 and it was proved 21 March 1803 in Wolcott. Their daughter, Hannah #11 above, evidently died between 1801 and 1803...would like to learn where and when she died. Also, data on the other children of Hezekiah and Sarah.

Dear Helen:

This Hezekiah Whitney is part of the descendants of Henry Whitney of CT, and is found in the on-line database with thirteen children, eight of whom have descent included in the same source. See the database at our new website at:

http://www.whitneygen.org/

Please write to the WRG again after you have explored this source, and let us know if we can be of further help. We would eventually be interested in whatever extension you could supply to the point where you link into the existing database.

Happy Hunting!

It would be nice to think that Jabez had a sister. At the moment I think he must have crawled out from under a rock. Abigail Milk Wheeler, however, has a well understood lineage.

I visited Lakeside Pa this past weekend and visited my Great grandfathers grave Alonzo Whitney(1850-1931) and his wife Della Simpson (1858-1929). They are buried in the Presbyterian cemetery in Sesquehana. My grandfather Leonard son of Alonzo is buried in the Catholic Cemetery in Sesquehana. If any body has any information at all on Alonzo (ie where he lived and worked ect) I would appreciate it. I find it hard to believe that Alonzo left the farm in Arat and worked in Sesquehana without ever running into Leonard.

While visiting Alonzo's grave I saw a marker for a Cora Whitney next to his b.1884 and d.1973. Does anybody know who she is and her decendants?

I also stopped off at a cemetery in Jackson where I found a marker for Elbert G. Whitney- I couldn't make out any dates. I found a marker for a Laura Whitney by marriage and a possible Frank H. Whitney. Again all I could make out were the names. If any one has information these people I would appreciate it as well. I also found the marker of Betsy Lamb wife of Torrey Whitney in this cemetery. I checked the South Gibson cemetery but found no Whitney's. We did pass another cemetery in the middle of Gibson off route 92. It was off the road about a quarter of the mile on a hillside. We tried to find a road in to it, but had no success. There might be some Whitney's buried there. It would be near the area where the Whitney farm was in Gibson/Arat PA.

         Thanks,
           Tim

Hello, I am not a member of the Whitney family, but I am doing some research ,and if it is not to much trouble I would appreciate any help. I need to find some information on Anna Whitney, born Nov 30,1844 in Cambridge Ma. The daughter of Asa Hammond Whitney born, Boston 1819. Her mother was Laura Leffingwell Henshaw. Anna never married and lived most of her life in Lancaster Ma. She died in Lancaster on Aug. 10,1922. She was educated at the Lasell seminary in Auburndale. She was a teacher for many years in Lancaster. She was a trustee and board member of the local library. She was an artist and she had a small art studio. she did a lot to promote women's rights. She ran a dog kennel and was known all over the country for the St Bernards she raised. She was also one of the only women judges at the dog shows in Boston, and New York. What I am trying to find out is did she leave a family collection, Perhaps diaries, or other papers? Do any of her paintings still exist.?Perhaps these things have been passed down among Whitney family members. Or maybe they were given to a historical society someplace. I have tried the Lancaster historical commission and the local library. Neither of them have anything. I even tried the Worcester historical society because Lancaster is part of Worcester county and they had nothing. If any one on this list knows anything about this Anne Whitney I would love to hear from you. Or if any one has any ideas of other places that I can locate information on her personal papers .I am not even sure if the type of papers and diaries I am looking for ,even exist . .I would love any help I can get ,Thank You all, for letting me take up your time, and thank you for any help you can give me. Date: Fri, 04 Jun 1999 07:37:37 -0600 From: Tim Doyle <[email protected]> Subject: [WHITNEY-L] WRG's Ten Most Wanted List To: [email protected]

As most of you are aware, we still have many unsolved mysteries in our WHITNEY research. In an effort to solve these problems, I suggest we create a "Ten Most Wanted" List. Each problem on this list would be outlined by the researcher(s) most familiar with the problem and placed on the new WRG web site for others to see. Each outline might contain the following information:

A short title.

Author's name(s) and contact information.

A paragraph outlining the problem.

A detailed and fully-cited description of the problem containing everything known about the individual in question.

A list of sources checked without positive results.

A paragraph describing suggestions for further research.

Off the top of my head, I would think that the following would probably make it on the list:

1. John-1 Whitney's Ancestry 2. Henry-1 Whitney's Ancestry 3. Samuel-1 Whitney's Ancestry 4. Origin of Jabez Whitney 5. Origin of Ebenezer Whitney who married Huldah Mooers etc.

The criteria for a research problem making the list as well as for the ordering on the list would be based on the number of WRG members affected. This would probably go hand in hand with the time that the person lived - earlier problems would be more likely to make the list.

Can you think of a research problem that might make the Ten Most Wanted list? If so, speak up! We'll then ask for a volunteer(s) to write up an outline.

I believe I have found the progenitor of a separate and distinct Whitney line.

All my evidence points to a James Packard, born 1856, prob. July 4th if the age recconing from his death record is right, being taken in by an Ara And Sara (Chamberlain) Whitney sometime before the 1860 Census. Tracking this couple through the census shows a 4 yo James Packard in 1860, a 14 yo James Whitney in 1870, and a 24 yo James Whitney in 1880. Marriage record for Ara And Sara indicate first marriages for both in their early-mid 30's. James' birth record has not been found under either surname in the microfilm at Middlesex, VT. I have not yet investigated a birth record under Chamberlain, but I am not suspecting James is Sara's illegitamate son since the couple also appears to have taken in an older unrelated girl. (There is a Packard/Chamberlain family connection but the records are incomplete to draw conclusions that Sara may have taken in a relation.) But a marriage and death record for James B Whitney have been found. The marriage record does not list a mother, but the father is listed as James Packard Whitney. (I suspect the clerk didn't understand that James Packard was the full name and not the first and middle. I have found no trace of a James Whitney in the right place and time to be James B.'s father. I would welcome such a piece of evidence, but really think I am looking for a Packard father or mother). On James B.'s death record his father is listed as Eric (pretty close sounding to Ara) and Sara Whitney. I am sure they survivors only knew of the people who raised him at thetime of his death. Nothing had been passed down in family lore to hint at an "adoption" of any sort. All James B.'s records and those birth records of his children indicate he was born in Stockbridge, VT. By 1860 he was in Rochester, VT and later he, Ara and Sara moved to Hancock, VT. Upon his marriage he moved from Hancock to Rochester.

My quest is to find James Packard/James B. Whitney's birth parents. I am also curious about Ara Whitney and Sara Chamberlain's families and ancestors, since I suspect there might be a blood relation to James. Ara and Sara appear to have not produced any of their own children. Except for James, Ara is the end of the line and there is probably no one tracing him. If anyone has anything on Whitneys, Packards, and/or Chamberlains in and around the 3 towns I mentioned that may relate to James, I'd appreciate knowing about it.

Thanks. -Denise

I noticed when looking at the data base log that a search on June 4 was entered for WILLARD WHITNEY, WILLARD STRAIGHT, and WILLARD WHITNEY STRAIGHT. I am aware of two Willards -- one, my grandfather, was Willard Johnson Whitney, b. 12/12/1876, d. 9/4/1954, parents Abraham Johnson Whitney (b. NY Jan, 1820, d. G.R. Mich 3/12/1891; son of Zerah, b. Conn. 6/10/1784), & Francess Bennett Whitney.

The other Willard, Willard Straight, married Dorothy Whitney, daughter

of William Collins Whitney & Flora Payne Whitney (NY). There is much information on Wm Collins Whitney, the Paynes, and Dorothy & Willard Straight in Swanberg's "Whitney Father, Whitney Heiress," Scribner Publishing - I think published in the 1970's, but could have been '60's.

I'm pretty sure this was Eliot/Elliott-7 WHITNEY [Elisha-6, Joshua-5, Nathaniel-4, Nathaniel-3, John-2, John-1]. Polly GOODWIN was daughter of Abraham and Catherine (KING) GOODWIN, b. 1790-1800, Delaware Water Gap, Monroe Co., PA.

Thank you so much for the offer but I don't believe that it is the Anna Whitney I am looking for. Although they do seem to have alot in common.Perhaps they were cousins. If this is true and can be verified, we've just solved one of our Ten Most Wanted! Well, maybe not solved, but it sure would point us in a new direction of research. Did we know about this source before or is this really new to us?

I'm new to the site -- one week - but have this reference, from a manuscript "The Genealogy of Ebenezer Whitney," by Doreen Menzies Arbuckle, 1986:

"Ebenezer WHITNEY, Sr., b. cir. 1747, d. 15 Aug 1810, aged 63, bur. at the Enclosure, Newcastle, NB, Canada. m. Hulda Mooers 17 Jan 1769 at Sheffield, on the Saint John River near Fredericton. She was dau. of Peter and Mary (HOW) MOOERS of the Maugerville area. ... Land petition No. 520, 1809, states that he was a native of Ireland."

When I build my email contacts, I hope to have more details from the NB Whitney family.

I am wondering if anyone has any data on a Henry Whitney in

Illinois? I have reference to a lawsuit that occurred in Iroquois County, Illinois, Circuit Court in 1846, in which a Henry Whitney and Henry L Marsh were plaintiffs against John Strickler defendant.

This indicated that John Strickler gave a promissory note on

May 15, 1845, in Milford, Illinois, in Iroquois County, Illinois, to Whitney & Marsh, promising to pay on or before January 1, 1846 six hundred eighty four and 50/100 dollars and did not do so. I have a copy of this Court Document

I am interested in that it is possible he was the husband of

Polly Whitney, who appeared in the Iroquois County, Illinois, 1850 census, along with a child that I believe was my great grandfather, James Whitney, and with six other children, and all of whom were shown as being born in New York.

If I can learn something about this Henry Whitney, I think it

is quite possible that I can go on back and identify the antecedants of my Great Grandfather, whom I have been seeking for over four years. I have been unable to find Polly Whitney in either an earlier or later census in this area.

Any help that can be furnished, would be much appreciated.

Their children were born 7 Apr 1816, 25 Apr 1818, 28 Jan 1822, 10 Nov 1823, 19 June 1826, and 31 July 1830. He died in October 1832. His wife subsequently married Joseph Thompson. All this information comes from the Camden-Rockport, Maine town records. The second marriage of Eliza is "documented' in the DAR records, in one of the earliest books. I have been dead-ended on this for several years since finding out and proving that Pierce was in error concerning this individual. I nominate Calvin as one of the ten most wanted! was not yours obviously, I have not really worked much on my Whitney line so far, you know W at the end of the alphabet *s*. Try in these two sites if you can find something though, they are sites of census all areas of Maine, and the other has census as well as births, deaths, cemetary infor as well, and good luck. http://home.att.net/~n.c.hall/Census.html this one has the other info as well, and is constantly updated last update was I think 4th June 1999.

and http://www.census-online.com/links/index.html This is an online site of all states censuses, try under Maine.

Hope this helps, Sandra Tracy

Betty,

You can find his oldest five children's birth from Pepperell, MA, vital records, at

I suspect that he is the Ephraim WHITNEY who is later found at Guilford, Vermont, but I have no further details on these families. A few more dates and places would be helpful, even if from the LDS.

Dear Deb: You're more than welcome! Glad I could help. I've taken the liberty of forwarding your message to our Whitney Research Group, about 80 of us who have joined together on an e-mail list. If someone connects to your line, you may hear from them. If you haven't done so already, visit the web page: http://www.whitneygen.org where you can find sources and documentation.

I know so little about Anna Palmer who married Joseph-5 WHITNEY (Timothy-4, John-3, John-2, John-1)? Was PALMER her maiden name, do you know, or was that her married name? And do you know her date and place of birth by chance?

Thank you for all you wonderful information on the family name. My limited research in the Whtiney name intersected with yours at Joseph Whitney born-2-21-1716 and married Anna Palmer. Joseph is my great great great great great grandfather, if i counted right. Your database got me back even farther --4 more generations. Thank you again. I don't have a lot of infor, but if there is anything i can help you with, feel free to email me. Unfortunately I'm on webtv and don't have a way to download infor. I have entered my family tree into my parents computer using the program Family Trees Quick and Easy but my parents arn't online.

Hello everyone....I know I've asked this before, but I still have NO leads in my search.....Does anyone in the Whitney line have a male Whitney that married a lady named SARAH LOUISE BAKER...she was born 1846 in New York, to Ephraim and Nancy (Head) Baker....I do not have a marriage date, place, or first name of this Whitney....I have to ASSUME that she was at least 18 when they married, making it around 1864-1865...this is only a guess...It has been said that they had two children, but both were stillborn....She appears on the 1880 Yankton,S.D. Census in the household of her mother Nancy (Head)Baker...she is listed as ...S.L.Whitney...She is said to have died in 1927 in Corsicana, Texas while living in the household of her nephew,Morris John Whitney Baker. ANYONE with ANY information, please contact me......thank you. JudyAnn Lairson [email protected]

Hi Again...I've done this before and have had little luck...But I'm a sucker for abuse

I'm trying to find the parents of one Margaret A. Whitney who married Charles Greenleaf Ramsdell on August 31st, 1870 in Hartland Me. Somerset county. She later married a Charlie A. Welch (of Hartland) and moved out of the picture. The only clue I have is that her marriage to Charles Ramsdell was a double ceremony. Also married that day was one Sumner Whitney and Augusta Wyman, both of Hartland. I'm assuming, and since I've been stuck on this for nearly 18 months, am probably wrong that they were siblings.

A Sumner Whitney who was born in Palmyra, Me. (approx. 1843) and died in Hartland 9/28/1918 had his father listed as one Edward Whitney born in Belgrade (Me. ?), and his mother as one Annie Knox born in Oakland....I've had no luck with the VR's in Belgrade. A nice lady who I can't remember her name, said that she thought that Edward was really one Charles Edward Whitney......No luck there either...

I have recently found an Edward Whitney who died in Hartland Me. Aug. 1, 1897 at the age of 87 yrs. 4 mo. and 5 days. ( b at approx. 1810 ) and was supposedly born in Webster.....I don't know what state..... His father was E. Whitney born Topham His mother was Nat Knawn ( that last name is not written to clearly so it could be off a little..or a lot) who was born Gardner...

Also an Annie Whitney who died in Hartland Oct. 15, 1897 at the age of 82 yrs. and 11 days. (b at aprox. 1815) and was supposedly born in Lebanon N.H. There is no record that these two were married or that they had children together Her parents were Stephen Knox and Aussie Hanson with no birth place known.

Does any of this make any sense to anyone???? Do any of these people seem familar????

Please help if you can...Thanks a lot [email protected]

Hi!

I had seen the name Sumner Whitney in my Maine research before, and

found this for you, probably not very helpful as dates don't jibe: "Ties of Common Blood: a History of Maine's Northeast Boundary Dispute with Great Britain, 1783-1842" G. T. Scott, Heritage Books, Inc.----page 396-397. 1854-Sumner Whitney purchased from the state, of lots improved before August 9, 1836 , at Township F, Range 2(Presque Isle, Aroostook County). And again as above, (but)"lots purchased or contracted for and improved before August 9, 1842".

Can't find some other info I received from another researcher on

him, but will keep looking if you wish. Cheers, Jan

Hello all: A few unconnected Whitneys are in my database. Maybe someone out there has a connection here.

Josiah Dexter HOWE Jr. (son of Josiah Dexter Howe and Hannah Rice) b: 5 Aug 1838 Princeton, Mass; d. 4 May 1865

married Annie M. WHITNEY

Who were Annie M. Whitney's parents?

Children of Josiah Dexter Howe Jr. and Annie M. Whitney were: Alice Grace HOWE (b. abt 1857, Harvard, Illinois; d. Chicago) Susie Estelle HOWE (b. 20 Sep 1858, Harvard, McHenry County, Illinois) Edward Morrill HOWE (b. 31 Oct 1860 Dedham, Norfolk, Mass.)

My sources: "Howe Genealogies" by Daniel Wait Howe, Boston 1929 page 333 "John Howe of Sudbury and Marlborough" p436: [Josiah Dexter Howe Jr.] lived a few years in Harvard, Ill., then returned to Mass. and settled in Dedham."

This seems to connect to the Henry-1 WHITNEY family:

Jeremiah-6 WHITNEY [Abijah-5, Daniel-4, Henry-3, John-2, Henry-1], b. 18 Mar 1782, Warwick, Orange Co., NY, m. Rachel KING, and d. in Rochester, Monroe Co., NY. See <http://www.whitneygen.org/families/henryw/ctwhitn.html#i1740>.

The 1830 Census of Clarkson, Monroe Co., NY, lists a Jeremiah E. WHITNEY. The 1840 Census of Irondequoit, Monroe Co., NY, lists a Jeremiah E. WHITNEY. I haven't found him in the 1850 Census, either in NY or MI.

Since his mother's name was Elizabeth ELLSWORTH, it would be a reasonable guess that Jeremiah's and William's middle names were Ellsworth.

This is only a possibility, and should be checked out further before being accepted.

To: [email protected] Subject: [WHITNEY-L] Found Whitney Family Maine

Dear WRG's,

I 've learned of an apparently undocumented Whitney family( at

least to our group) that lived in CUMBERLAND (town) ME, which was part of North Yarmouth until the early 1820's. Can anyone help to identify them?

This was found in a note from Ina Loring Norton (1896-1983) to the

Falmouth ME Historical Society: "My mother was CARRIE WHITNEY-her father was JAMES WHITNEY- his father was also JAMES WHITNEY."

Her father's brothers were ALEXANDER, ULYSSES & AMMI(of Falmouth).

She states that there were seven Whitney brothers[in all] who came to the West Cumberland area(no dates given, or indication from whence they came).

       I found AMMI in Cumberland 1830,Falmouth 1850, Portland 1870

census lists. JAMES and ALEXANDER, in Cumberland Census lists , are buried in Morrison Hill Church Cemetery along with thirteen other Whitneys born ca 1788-1833. None of these Whitneys are related to Abner Whitney's descendents in No. Yarmouth, Falmouth, or Gorham, as I have found in research[my line].

I wonder if this family produced either the mysterious JABEZ who

came from Cumberland at the time of his marriage to Abigail Milk Wheeler(Michael Poston's) or Aaron who married in ME, Betsy Hildreth(Evelyn Brown's)?

One last comment-- I found a James Whitney on an Ancestry

database"Passenger Arrivals in the United States 1819-1820" :Whitney, James

male ;age 24; occupation Merchant. No place of origin, arrival port, or

name of ship. Does anyone know who this is? Cheers! Jan

They are named for the three daughters of Parkhurst-6 WHITNEY (Jonathan-5, Jonathan-4, Jonathan-3, Benjamin-2, John-1). Parkhurst was a prominent figure in the Niagara Falls area. He owned and operated a major hotel in the area. Supposedly his daughters, Angeline, Sally & Celinda were the first white women to set foot on the island, hence the name.

Hello All,

I'm new to the list (have been lurking for just a few days), but the message from Jan Whitaker yesterday prompted me to finally gather my information and post an inquiry.

I'm descended from the Gorham/Cumberland/Falmouth, Maine Whitneys, from JAMES through his son ALEXANDER. ALEXANDER had a son HEZEKIAH who had a daughter LEONORA, who was my great-grandmother. I've included the complete line as I have it below.

I inherited all of my Whitney data from my father, who obtained it from other relatives, so I don't have much in the way of sources. My father's notes indicated, however, that the JAMES Whitney of Gorham might be the son of ISAAC4 (Nathaniel3, Benjamin2, John1) of York, Saco and Buxton. ISAAC married SARAH CROSBY and HANNAH PAINE. Isaac and Hannah had a son James, but I have been unable to find any information about this James so far.

Does anyone know any more about these Whitney's from Maine, especially about the origins of James? Any leads would be most appreciated.

Hello everyone!

A few weeks ago my husband and I spent a lovely lunch here in North Carolina with Bill Whitney and his wife Marge. Bill handed me the pedigree of the famous artist Norman ROCKWELL showing his descendancy from Henry WHITNEY of Connecticut.

So it can become part of our Henry database, I have forwarded the pages to Carolyn Tilton for addition. In the meantime, here is the line in brief. As you can see, he is connected in two ways.

Norman Percevel Rockwell (1894-1978)

Jarvis Waring Rockwell (b.1867) and Nancy Hill
John William Rockwell (b.1838) and Phebe Boyce Waring (b. 1841)
Samuel Darling Rockwell (b. 1810) and Oril Janes Sherman (b. 1808)
Runa Rockwell (1773-1864) and Rachel Darling (1773-1860)
Abraham Rockwell (1749-1818) and Esther Riggs (1752-1816) *
John Rockwell (1706-1773) and Elizabeth Keeler (b. 1708)
Joseph Keeler (1683-1757) and Elizabeth Whitney (1684-1763) **
  • Esther Riggs was the daughter of Miles Riggs and Elizabeth-4 Whitney

(Joseph-3, John-2, Henry-1)

    • Joseph Keeler's wife was Elizabeth-3 Whitney (John-2, Henry-1)

Thank you again Bill. It was such a pleasure to meet you and your wife. We hope to do it again sometime!

I am a new member of this group and have been watching with interest. Does anyone have any Whitney ancestors from Surrey, England? I am searching for information on Joseph James Whitney. He was born about 1809 and married Hannah Reed 1832 at St Giles, Camberwell, Surrey. They had a daughter, Emma, born 1839 in Rotherhithe, Surrey. Emma married Robert Linsey Feaviour. I think that Joseph's father was named Joshua, but have been unable to confirm this. I would appreciate any help with this line. Thanks. Pat

Dear Mrs Muse:

I just discovered your page this evening, and spent some time digging

through surnames. One that stood out was the marriage of Neil Leavitt Harvey, son of Delia Whitney and descendent of John, to Jane Worden in 1956. (Her tree was labeled "unknown".)

This would not be the first time a Whitney married a Worden.

My great-grandfather Charles F. Kyser's mother Samantha was a product of an earlier Whitney-Worden match. Lucretia Whitney, daughter of Brig. Gen. William Whitney and descendent of John, married Pardon Worden II in 1818.

(This is illustrated on this genealogical chart: http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/s/h/a/Orrin-E-Sharp/GENE4-0051.html , though be aware there are several mistakes on it, such as my grandfather Ralph and some of his siblings shown as the children, rather than the grandchildren, of Samantha.)

Also of note is the fact that a Fanny Whitney married a Worden Babcock in 1829. (Perhaps he is an ancestor of composer Jimmy van Heusen, who was born a Babcock.)

Finally, seeing your address brought to mind our family's six-month stay in Brevard in the mid-1960's. It was during that time that our brother Douglas Kyser, Jr., was killed in action in Vietnam. This makes me wonder how many of the other names on the wall in Washington belong to descendents of John Whitney.

Sincerely,

Ronald R. Kyser St. Paul, Minnesota

Dear Patricia:

I have the CD's from the LDS Church on the British Vital Records, and I just checked them. I found no entries for a birth for Joseph J. Whitney, no marriage for either him or a Hannah Reed, no birth for an Emma Whitney or a marriage for her either. This does NOT mean that none of that happened, just that it isn't on the CD's. Have you tried the IGI at the LDS website? If you do, be sure to be wary of events marked Births and Deaths. Most, if not all, of them come from individual submissions, not from actual records of events at the time they took place. On the other hand, christenings, marriages and burials do mostly come from the transcriptions of the microfilmed Parish Registers. Watch the film number. If it begins with a letter of the alphabet, and is not just numbers, it will have come from a Parish Register source (at least that is what I was told).

As I was going through the search I mentioned above, I noted that there were very few Surrey records included, so don't dismay.

Still looking for my wifes DARIUS THOMAS WHITNEY.
There is a DARIUS WHITNEY in Hornby, Steuben Cty, N.Y.

in the 1850 census. He was 43 then..born 1807. I suspect he was my D.T. WHITNEY'S father. He came from Vermont, as did all other Whitney's there (Hornby) but one, who came from N.H.

Then looked in Vermont and found scads of Whitney's from the

1700's. Probably my wifes connection..but still grasping.

Pat,

You may well have some or all of this, copied from the St Caths (GRO) and the IGI. I have no idea if any of these people are related, but it seems quite likely. "Father: Josh" in the IGI is consistent with your "Joshua" so that looks good, and is too early for GRO corroboration.

Whitney, James W., pioneer lawyer and early teacher, known by the nickname o= f=20 "Lord Coke"; came to Illinois in Territorial days (believed to have been=20 about 1800); resided for some time at or near Edwardsville, then became a=20 teacher at Atlas, Pike County, and still later, the first Circuit and County=20 Clerk of that county. He acquired the title, by which he was popularly known for a=20 quarter of a century, by his custom of visiting the State Capital, during th= e=20 sessions of the General Assembly, when he would organize the lobbyists and=20 visitors about the capital=97of which there were an unusual number in those=20 days=97into what was called the "Third House." Having been regularly chosen = to=20 preside under the name of "Speaker of the Lobby," he would deliver a message=20 full of practical hits and jokes, aimed at members of the two houses and=20 others, which would be received with cheers and laughter. The meetings of th= e=20 "Third House," being held in the evening, were attended by many members and=20 visitors in lieu of other forms of entertainment. Mr. Whitney's home, in his=20 latter years, was at Pittsfield. He resided for a time at Quincy. Died, Dec.=20 13, 1860, aged over 80 years.

From: [email protected] Date: Sat, 19 Jun 1999 23:08:11 EDT Subject: [WHITNEY-L] Esau J. Whitney (Jr.) of Minnesota To: [email protected]

Dear WRG:

In clearing through old papers as a part of the process of deciding what to throw out and what to pack up to move, I came across a letter from the Minnesota Historical Society, dated Apr. 29, 1996. We left for our last trip to England and Europe on May 13th of that year, and I know this was set aside to take care of later and then migrated to the bottom of a pile. Thus, I am sure I never informed the WRG about it, either.

Somewhere I had discovered that the Minnesota Historical Society had some Whitney papers. I wrote to ask about them and received a response, the material mentioned above. The letter said:

"Enclosed is a photocopy of the inventory description to the Esau J. Whitney correspondence. You can request photocopies of these letters." It goes on about charges. The inventory description then said:

DESCRIPTION OF THE LETTERS

The letters of 1854-1856 are primarily love letters written by Whitney to Rachel Ellis in Ionia, Michigan, while he was living in Whitney Valley, New York. He discusses the opposition of his family to their wedding plans and his intention to go to the West. Some of the letters contain poems."

"Five letters of 1859 were written from Princeton, Minnesota, to Rachel who remained in Ionia with their daughter, Sarah (Nettie). A letter of August 1 contains a map of the area and a description of a journey to Green Lake. [NB from AEG - I've swum in that lake many times] His letters generally describe the land and soil, the prairie, weather, crops, neighbors (August 6), and Rachel's journey to join him. On August 14 he writes of the damage by a tornado(?), and includes a description of the town of Anoka. A letter of March 22, 1886, from Silas Sprague (Ionia, Mich.), contains details about settling the estate of Rachel's father."

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

"Esau J. Whitney was born in 1829 in New York. [He appears in Witney13 as Esau Jr, b. abt 1830, no further data] In 1859 he moved to Minnesota with his father and brother (Benjamin) to stake out claims in Princeton Township, Mille Lacs County. Rachel Ellis was born in New York in 1835 and was living in Ionia, Michigan, during the time the letters were written. They were married about 1856 and had a daughter, Sarah (b. 1857). Rachel remained in Michigan when Whitney went to Minnesota, but joined him in Princeton in the fall of 1859. Rachel later married Jonas R. Hill and continued to live in Princeton."

I know we have (or have had) some members who are interested in the families of Whitney Valley in New York, and I also know that a few are interested in Whitneys who lived in Minnesota. If these materials can be of use to some of you, I'll follow up and order them for transcription later and posting on the "whitneygen" website. I won't get it done until next fall, however, after my relocation to Maryland. Alternatively, if someone else wants to tackle the project out of a greater sense of urgency, I would be glad to furnish anyone with the details of how to get copies made from the Minnesota Historical Society. On the other (third?) hand, if someone has already secured copies of these letters, please let me know -- and I would suggest sending them to Tim for placement on our website.

Allan and WRG,

I will do one better, I will drive over to the MHS and get copies of all the materials. Will save somebody the costs of postage, etc. Our Whitneys are in Minnesota, but not connected to Esau. Every once in a while I come across some Whitneys in my digging, and post it to the list, but this one I had not seen yet.

I will get the copies, and then we can decide what we should do with them. Sounds like Tim is busy with packing and moving and then going through it again almost immediately. But with my scanner I can send them to folks individually as an attachment, and then eventually mail them to whoever is part of this line. I will try and get over there this week if my migraines cooperate.

Hello, I am researching my Whitney family in Minnesota, does any one have family in Minnesota? I have a box of old post cards of my grandmothers, but I can't seem to put this family tree together. Here are some of the names: Mrs. Josie H. Whitney (lived at 1159 Raymond Ave, St. Paul, MN) Mrs.W.H.Whitney ( lived in san Pedro Ca.)? Mary J. Whitney Harry Whitney Renabelle Whitney Raymond Whitney Married Minnie Son:Donald Amy Whitney (My grandmother) Married Sigfred C. Johnson Sadie Whithey Married George C. Walker Sarah Walker? I have several other names that are probably aunts & Uncles: Ella H. Ethel married Milton Awbrey? Oscar Mrs.Louis Johnson Roy Charley Art Grace Bill Willie There is one from Aunt Emma & Uncle Sylas that mentions Oscar building a dance Hall next to his Hotel ( I beleive in Minneapolis) it also mentions a Lessly.

There is one that mentions Uncle Frank selling his farm and trading the Mill for land in Georgia, and PaPa would be laeving for Geogia also. Some of the family names and friends: Whitney, Walker,Kelly (lived in Gresham Ore.), cousin Thompson in Elkhart Ind. Mrs.Knudson Mrs.Mary Denson? If any one is familiar with these names, I would like to try and put this family tree together. Sincerely Mrs. Jody Farmer [email protected]

Just thought I would let you know that I was contacted by a distant cousin who was able to extend my family tree. All of this happened within 3 days of posting my family background on the WRG website. Hopefully between the two of us we will be able to expand the Cleveland Ohio and Pittsburgh, PA Whitney Tree.

My family, too, has a number of old letters written to Mary Adelaide (Addie) Whitney. Addie was married first to a man named Dickinson, and second to a man named Edward Foster. She was the daughter of William W. Whitney (b. 3/25/1836 in Ontario, Canada) and Elizabeth C. Berry (b. in Darke County, Ohio).

William W. Whitney lived in Ontario until 1849 when he was 13 when the family moved to Jackson Co, Michigan, and later to Ingham Co, MI. Around 1857 when William W. was the age of 21, he went to Whiteside County, IL. William and Elizabeth married in Whiteside County, IL, in 1858. In 1862, William entered the Civil War (Company B, 75th, Illinois Volunteer Infantry). He returned to Illinois, to Bureau County, living there until 1867 when they moved to Franklin County, Iowa. Six years later he went to Cass County, Iowa, and in 1881 the family moved to Center Township, Pottawattamie County, Iowa, where they were still residing in 1891.

William W. Whitney's obituary lists the following for his siblings: Ferdenand S. of Iowa (Uncle Ferd), Joanna Rundall of Michigan, Mrs. H. E. Kneeland of Toledo, Ohio, Mrs. Adel Wisner of Long Island, NY, and Mrs. Georgie Hunter of Mason, Michigan.

Here are some of the names in the letters that we cannot connect to the family. Maybe someone will recognize something.

If anyone has it or knows where I might get a copy of it, please contact me. It supposedly has quite a bit of information concerning my branch of Penney's.

Dear Mrs. Farmer:

We may be able to help you, but really need for you to attach some dates, even if approximations, and places to the collection of names you have provided. If you will take your previous letter and estimate birth, marriage and death dates, and any places that you know or have heard about; then we might be better able to help you connect to other Whitney family lines.

For many years I and several others have been seeking the parents of Ezra Whitney, of Ontario County, NY, b. 1790-1800, m. 1822, in NY state, Julia Pelton, d. 1847-50 in Michigan. Recently I was contacted by a very distant cousin who has family records that claim the parents of this Ezra Whitney were Ezra Whitney, Sr, and Juliette Stewart. This elder Ezra Whitney is unknown to me, but one possibility I find in Phoenix is Ezra, son of John Whitney and Thankful Benedict, born 1760. Does anyone know anything about this individual, or of any marriage between an Ezra Whitney and Juliette Stewart? Thanks, A. Whitney Brown

AGER, AGAR, AUGER, EGER, or EAGER, WILLIAM, adm. freem. 18 May 1631. I dare not attempt to indicate how close is the reality of relationship with those who spell Auger and Hagar.

Genealogical Dictionary of New England (HAGAR)

WILLIAM, Watertown, prob. came ill the fleet with Winth. as made freem. 18 May 1631, tho. he may have arr. only a few wks. bef. with Rev. Roger Williams, but nothing more is kn. of him. Genealogical Dictionary of New England

ROBINSON. 555 (This is one entry at the end of about 5 pages of Robinson info. Note that the daughter Mary, born 6 Sep 1676 would seem to preclude a daughter Mercy being born 7 Aug 1676 to this family -- UNTIL I checked Robert Ward's 6-Generation Study which shows that the 6 Sep date was the date of Mercy's christening! The wife's name is given as Eliz. - which is consistent with the Elizabeth Cutter that appears in the Whitney database.

I would make no brief for which version of the name to choose - the Whitney

entry shows no marriage for the first Nathaniel.)

Genealogical Dictionary of New England

WILLIAM, Concord, by w. Eliz. had Hannah, b. 13 July 1671; rem to Cambridge, in that part now Newton, there by w. Eliz. had William, b. 10 July 1673; Mary, 6 Sept. 1676; David, 23 Mar. 1678; Samuel, 20 Apr. 1680; and Jeremiah, 20 Apr. 1682; and Robert; freem. 1685.

(The entry for Mercy in the Whitney database says she was born in Cambridge)

I hope this helps. If you find good material from satisfactory sources, I'd appreciate it if you would pass it back to me so I can include it into my own database.

She was called Mercy in all other records as far as I know. The interesting thing is their first child Nathaniel was born two months after their marriage. I had chosen to believe that it was a year and two months due to the double year thing with the Gregorian calendar, but the Diary of Ebenezer Parkman put that theory to rest when he wrote about Nathaniel's age at his death. I would have expected some court action for the couple's "folly" but have not found one. It also makes me wonder if Nathaniel Whitney was the real father (I know, I know. I hate going here myself!).

YIKES!! That was meant to be *before* their marriage. It's amazing what lack of sleep can do to you ... or old age!!

Ronna,

I hope you don't mind me including your message to the wider group. As more active researchers in the group can tell you, the Melville book is flawed with regard to John's ancestry at the grandparent level. There was a good article in The American Genealogist back in 1934(?). You can find reference to it on my site.

As for the Parkman Diary, I would strongly recommend anyone with early Westborough (MA) ancestry to get ahold of a copy. Parkman was the first minister in town and kept a diary from the 1720's until his death in the 1780's. Back in 1975 the American Antiquarian Society had the part up to and including 1755 published with a full index. It's an interesting read from several perspectives, but is a genealogist's gold mine. It was able to prove two of my heretofore dead end female lines, one of which was Mary Child, wife of Nathaniel Whitney. That info is also on my Whitney page or can be found in a 1983 NEHGR article that also pointed out one of Pierce's errors on assignment of Whitney children to the wrong mother. The diary, last I knew, could be ordered from Oak Knoll Press in Maryland or Delaware. Several years ago it was $45. The AAS in Worcester, MA would also be able to tell you how to get a copy.

Disclaimer: I have no financial interest in the product I've just recommended. The interest I do have is two-fold. One is that many genealogists can benefit from this resource. The other is that if there is enough interest in this volume, perhaps the AAS would commission the second half of the diary to be published which could probably benefit even more of us genealogists.

Some personal type info tidbits from the diary: Mary (Child) Whitney was given to some outbursts. I think there was some religious fad that caused people to do this. Pls forgive my poor description of it, but I don't have time to look up the data in order to better describe it right now. Also my Abijah Bruce had quite a temper as can be seen on my Bruce page, a link to which can be found near the bottom of the Whitney page. There was also the boy/ man who was an ancestor of someone I worked with. He was terribly accident prone and was always getting hurt and ended up crippled. Part of the meeting house collapsed and he was the only one it landed on.

Dear WRG: I received this interesting mail today concerning Whitneys in Australia. Correspond with Mal Whitney, [email protected] , for more information.

-) Jeanne

His original message received 6/24/99:

I was reading the Whitney Family tree page and I may have some information which might prove useful to you.

It would appear that my branch of the family here in Australia emigrated from America and not from England with the early settlers/convicts. I have found that I am not related to any of the other Whitneys in this country.

Apparently, my great Grandfather (christian names unknown) was a Police officer in America and moved to Australia in the mid to late 19th century. He became a Police officer in New South Wales. His son, James Francis Whitney, joined the prison services and there was another son, Otley, about whom I know very little.

My father told me that he was related to John Hay Whitney, the American ambassador to England in the 50's/60's. I could not find any information in the Whitney database on him, unfortunately. He also said our lineage went as far back as Eli, but I strongly doubt that.

Francis seems to have been a family second name of sorts and my father's name was George Francis Harvey Whitney. The name Otley may be common as well.

I don't know if this helps you at all, but if you are aware of a branch which moved to Australia, please let me know and I'll see if I can get some more information for you.

Yours faithfully,

Malcolm Francis (Mal) Whitney.

(By the way, a Richard L. Whitney contacted me several years ago. Unfortunately I lost his details and haven't been able to find him on the Net.)

Taken from family research notes dated June 16, 1966 by my aunt Ruth Whitney Ryder. Hope these are of help to someone. We're just plumbing the riches of this lady's research.

Ardra L. Whitney told this story: Miss Kate Sawyer, sister of Almira Sawyer, was moving across the Charles River. Some things were being carried by hand. Her nephew, George Robinson (son of Almira (Sawyer) Robinson). He had a heavy load and when he arrived he was asked what it was. She told him it was an old wash bowl - deep, heavy, an inch or more thick for taking a bath. The bottom was out of it but she hoped to find another to fit it as she had the pitcher to match it.

Laura (Robinson) Stringham was sister of Mary E. (Robinson) Whitney.

Blanche Stringham told me - her Aunt Mabel and Uncle Frank Robinson got a book with lots of Robinsons in it when they were in Litchfield Maine. It was the Centennial of Litchfield - before 1940. Aunt Mabel was a member of D.A.R. and Colonial Dames. Mable Stringham married Frank Robinson, no relation. Laura (Robinson) Stringham was her mother. Florence Robinson MacGarvey has the book. (A copy in California Historical Society Library in SF).

Samuel Whitney, youngest brother of Ebenezer (24) bought a small luster pitcher that pleased him. When he took it home his mother asked him rather sharply who he bought it for and he replied that he bought it for his eldest daughter. (He was unmarried at the time.) His eldest daughter was Cordelia who married Elbert Holman. Their daughter was Gertrude. As she was a single lady she gave the pitcher to Ardra Whitney, her second cousin.

1999 Note: Upon Ardra's death, she, too, being a single lady, left the pitcher to Ruth Ryder, and upon her death it remains in her home with her son Lowell Ryder.

Went to Ithaca, N.Y. to visit my 95 yr. old mother.Talked on the phone to the town historian of Newfield. He told me he bought a book for $75 on the Whitneys. Must be the Pierce book. I asked why he was interested in the Whitneys and he replied "I am interested in any book that has the town of Newfield in it." Since the book was amongst many in his basement I didn't find out the title. He told me that there is a Whitney cemetery in Elmira, N.Y.Too bad I didn't have more time to talk to him. New York State has enough Whitney geneology to drive one bonkers. I looked in some books in The Tompkins County Library for my line, Heslop, Babcock, Whitney. I also researched in the Gilbertsville (formerly called Butternuts) Library that has a Local History Collection. Some Babcocks (Fanny Whitney) and Heslops lived there. The "Who's Who in America" books always have material on the Whitneys. Stopped at the cemetery in E. Aurora, New York and looked for Fanny Whitneys mother and father, William Henry Whitney and Fanny Miller. E. Aurora is a beautiful place as is Gillbertsville. Found a George G. Whitney who lived near Gilbertsville and came from Adams, Mass. He is the son of Erastus and Sarah (Sheldon) Whitney and a sister to my Grandma Henry Worden Babcocks wife Letitia. Their mother is a Ballou from the old family of Ballous from the l600's. There is a book "Ballous in America". After driving with my son, who just came back from a year in Ukraine, and my husband, back to Toronto with our rented car I thought I would clear my head of geneology on the plane back to Winnipeg by reading the June "Readers Digest." Oh no! that Whitney name is driving me crazy. On page 73 "Quotable Quotes" is a quote by A. Whitney Brown. "The past actually happened but history is only what someone wrote down." from "The Big Picture" (Harper Collins).

Dear RC:

This would be Lydia-4 Whitney (Jonathan-3, Benjamin-2, John-1), born 3 Mar 1711/12 in Sherborn, Middlesex, MA (Sherborn VR) to Jonathan-3 and Susannah (FAIRBANKS) Whitney. That she was this Lydia, who, oddly enough, married at age 33, is demonstrated by the fact that Isaac Hill appears in her father's will (in right of his wife, one assumes) -- i.e., on 17 May 1754, Isaac Hill and Lydia Hill quit their claim to the estate...

Full details back to the immigrant ancestor may be found on the Whitney Research Group WebSite, at

WHITNEY FAMILY. John Whitney, the emigrant ancestor of George C. Whitney and the late Edward Whitney. of Worcester. settled in Watertown, Massachusetts, in 1635. He was born about 1589. His wife, Elinor, was born about 1599. With seven children they embarked at Ipswich, England, in April, 1635. They have a very large posterity in America. Another John Whitney settled in Connecticut and founded an equally large family.

John Whitney bought the sixteen acres homestead of John

Strickland at what is now Waltham, in Watertown then, situated on what is now Belmont and East Common streets. Strickland went to Wethersfield, Connecticut, to live. John Whitney was admitted a freeman March 3, 1635-6. He was a constable in 1641 and a selectman from 1638 to 1655 inclusive. He was town clerk in 1655. His wife Elinor died May 11, 1659, said to be fifty-four years old, though other records would make her about sixty. He married (second), September 29, 1669, Judah Clement. He died June 1, 1673, said to be seventy-four years old. The ancestry of John Whitney is given with the Whitney Family elsewhere in this work.

(IV) Ensign David Whitney, son of Benjamin Whitney (3), was born

in Watertown, Massachusetts, June 16, 1697. He married, 1720, Rebecca Fillebrown, born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, November 6, 1695, and died 1749. He was one of the proprietors of land at Paris, Maine, in 1736. He died in 1745. He resided in Watertown and Waltham, Massachusetts. (V) Nathan Whitney, son of David Whitney (4), was born March 12,

1726-7. He married Tabitha Merriam. He settled in Westminster, Massachusetts. He bought of Benjamin Brown, December 26, 1750, a lot of ninety acres of land in the southern part of the town; part of this land is still owned by his descendants and used as the summer home of George C. Whitney and the family of Edward Whitney, of Worcester. He also bought of Thomas Merriam, his father-in-law, the southeast ends of the adjoining lots, 83 and 84, on which he built his first temporary house. His framed house which was built later forms the older part of the present structure on the old homestead. He brought his bride to Westminster in 1752 or 1753. His struggle with the soil and misfortune almost discouraged him. In the epidemic of 1756 both their children were taken. Again in 1764 their four children died of the epidemic. Out of nine children only three lived to maturity.

Nathan Whitney was a persevering and enterprising man, and at

length he prospered. He became one of the leading men of the town, and had an honorable military record. He was corporal in Captain Daniel Hoar's company in 1759. From 1771 to 1776 he held a commission from George III as captain. He sided with the colonists against the king, resigned his commission and took what part his age and health permitted in the revolution. In 1776 he was in charge of the Hessian prisoners from the British army stationed at his old homestead in Westminster. He died August 10, 1803, aged seventy-six. His wife Tabitha died December 26, 1822, aged ninety years. Mr. Whitney was one of the largest property holders on the Westminster tax list of 1798.

The children of Nathan and Tabitha (Merriam)

Whitney were: Tabitha, born June 29, 1753; Nathan, May 16, 1755, died August 28, 1756; Tabitha, July 6, 1757, died January 27, 1764; Nathan, April 9, 1760, died July 2, 1764; Jonathan, May 14, 1761, died June 21, 1764; Ruth, April 17, 1763, died July 7, 1764; Nathan, July 1, 1765; David, August 10, 1767; John, October 13, 1769.

(VI) John Whitney, son of Captain Nathan Whitney (5), was born

in Westminster, Massachusetts. He married Elizabeth Stearns, daughter of Josiah and Abigail (Emerson) Stearns, December 31, 1793. He settled on the first lot bought by his father, No. 90, and built the house now in use as a summer home by the Whitney family of Worcester. He died at the early age of thirty-two years, June 25, 1802. His widow married James Walker, who died without issue. She married (third) Luke Warren, of Hibbardston, by whom she had four children. She died October 30, 1838, aged sixty-eight years. The children of John and Elizabeth (Stearns) Whitney were: John, born January 15, 1795, died February 22, 1796; John, February 20, 1797; Betsy, May 3, 1799, married April 30, 1829, Thomas Merriam, and resided at Westminster; had three children; died July 15, 1888.

(VII) John Whitney, son of John Whitney (6), was born in

Westminster, Massachusetts. He succeeded to his father's estate and lived upon it all his life. He married Lydia Allen, daughter of Deacon Ephraim Allen, of Hubbardston (published September 30), 1821. They had a family of eight children, all of whom were of excellent character and reputation. He was greatly interested in the education of his children, fitted up a school room in his house, and maintained a private school, the advantages of which were shared by many children besides his own. He became a Baptist in middle life and joined the church. Later he was chosen deacon. In 1843-4 typhoid fever struck down all the members of the household. The father, mother and one child died. The date of his death was March 15, 1844, aged forty-seven; of his wife December 19, 1843, aged forty-one.

Their children were: J. Emerson, born September 13, 1822,

married twice, resided at Grafton, Massachusetts; Sumner A., June 27, 1824, married Lura Clarke, had three children; he died August 29, 1861; Ephraim, July 6, 1826, died June 20, 1850; Mary, October 23, 1829, married Charles M. Tinley, had three daughters; she died February 25, 1859; Harriet, May 29, 1832, married twice, resided in Worcester and Minnesota; had two children; Edward, August 12, 1834; Francis S., March 25, 1840, died January 16, 1844; George Clarkson, September 19, 1842.

(VIII) Edward Whitney, son of John Whitney (7), was born on the

old Whitney homestead in Westminster, Massachusetts, August 12, 1834. He obtained his elementary education in the public schools of his native town. In 1852, at the age of eighteen, he went to New York to strike out in business for himself. There he remained for four years, holding a position of trust in the Metropolitan Bank. In 1856 he came to Worcester, joining his elder brother, Sumner A. Whitney, in the stationery business which was carried on in the Butman block for a few years. His brother died in 1861 and he continued the business alone. He removed soon after to the Bowen block at the corner of Main and Mechanic streets, where he remained for about twenty years. Early in the eighties he removed to the present location of the business at 112 Front street. Shortly before his death Mr. Whitney admitted to partnership his two sons, Edward Cutting Whitney and Harry Sumner Whitney, and they have succeeded to the business which is carried on under the same name. The firm does a large wholesale trade in paper and stationery, blank books, manila paper and paper bags, all over New England. Mr. Whitney occupied a high position in the business community. His sterling character was the foundation of the great business success of his business.

During the last few years of his life he turned his business

cares over to his sons and spent some time in foreign travel, visiting various sections of America, Europe and the Holy Land, in which he took especial interest. He was an active and efficient worker in church and Sunday school. When he first came to Worcester he joined the Union Congregational Church and was superintendent of its Sunday school for more than ten years. He was

       Page 47
also deacon for many years. About 1892 he transferred his

membership to the Plymouth Congregational Church. He was president of the Worcester Young Men's Christian Association for two years. He was for several years chairman of the executive committee of the Young Men's Christian Association of Massachusetts. He was president of the Worcester Congregational Club for two years. He was a trustee of the Home for Aged Men. Few men have done more for the religious interests of the city than Mr. Whitney. He never cared for politics to any extent and never considered public office. It has been said of him that he was "interested in whatever was conducive to human welfare, and he did much to promote the better life of his adopted city and to lift the world to a higher level." Mr. Whitney died February 5, 1897. He married, November 26, 1857, Susan Louise Cutting, born August 29, 1838, died January 1, 1880. He married (second), October 27, 1886, Emma Louise Rice, who survives him; she is the daughter of William Rice. The children of Edward and Susan Louise (Cutting) Whitney were: Lillie Marie, born in Worcester, June 19, 1867, died August 24, 1868; Edward Cutting, born July 19, 1869; Harry Sumner, born June 1, 1873, married Alice Wright Gibson, of Germantown, Philadelphia, daughter of Alfred C. Gibson, of Germantown, they have one daughter. Louise, born March 30, 1905.

Would you happen to know if William Henry Whitney and Fanny Miller had any descendents named Charles Whitney?

A Charles Whitney was born in 1823 in MA, lived for a bit in Ohio and settled in North Collins, Erie Co, NY around 1865. He died in 1902. North Collins is a short few miles from East Aurora. He and his wife Marion Snyder named their eldest daughter Fanny and had other children as well.

I've been unable to find his death record so far or any clues as to his parentage. There is another group of Whitneys in nearby Ashford and haven't been able to connect him to them either.

For Carol A. Berry - Carol I too have the Salmon Whitney and Bathsheba in my Ohio data base, they are in both the 1840 and 1850 census of Medina Co. I have nothing further on them, however I am fairly certain that the two Bathsheba Whitney's you mention are not the same. The Medina County census of 1850 gives her age as 48, born then in 1802. The Ruluff Dutcher Whitney of Sheffield, MA is the one found in Portage Co., Ohio in 1850. However he was born 3 March, 1793 and died 30 Sep., 1884. His wife was Bathsheba Fuller (a son was John Fuller) and she was born 28 Nov., 1789 and died 24 Jan., 1854. Therefore (if her age given on the census is correct) she is not the one to have traveled to Cedar County, Iowa in 1851.

I hope this helps you and would like to see who Salmon and Bathsheba of your family turn out to be.

Dear WRG:

Someone just posted material of this kind on another list (Green-L) so I took the URL and substituted Whitney, and this is what I got. I haven't looked to see if it is already on the WebSite, but if it isn't, Tim, please put it there. I'll experiment a bit with the URL to see if it works for other states as well.

Dear WRG:

These two articles just came out, yesterday, I think. I believe some of you have web pages at GeoCities. If it actually means what it seems to say on the surface, it is of great concern to me and I thought it might well be of concern to you. There also seems to be brewing a somewhat similar kind of controversy at Rootsweb. I don't want to turn this genealogy group into a forum on this whole problem, but some of us may want to discuss it further privately. Copied news article from "Wired News" follows:

Yahoo: Your House Is My House
                    by Declan McCullagh
                    3:00 a.m. 29.Jun.99.PDT
If you're a GeoCities homesteader, be
warned: Your Web site is no longer your
                    own.
                    Yahoo, which launched its
                    Yahoo-GeoCities site Monday, says it
owns all Web pages, articles, and images
on member sites and has "irrevocable"
rights to them for all time.
This presents a problem for those
                    GeoCities members who have
                    painstakingly assembled large sites with
dozens, even hundreds, of pages of
                    valuable material.
"Somebody please tell me that this does
not mean that Yahoo is demanding the
rights to a large portion of my
professional writing and photography if I
use my Web site there," complained Tracy
Marks, who estimates that she has 600
Web pages and 23 MB of files on
                    GeoCities.
To create or update GeoCities pages,
members must agree to a contract that
gives Yahoo broad rights over their
                    intellectual property.
Under its terms of service, publishers
                    must give Yahoo a "royalty-free,
                    perpetual, irrevocable, non-exclusive and
fully sublicensable right and license to
                    use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish,
                    translate, create derivative works from,
                    distribute, perform and display such
Content" in any form or media.
Yahoo defends the terms in the contract,
saying it's trying to prevent itself from
                    being sued over copyright infringements
and wants the ability to promote its
                    service.
Consumer advocates say Yahoo has gone
                    too far.
"It's a bad idea. People don't read the fine
print on these contracts. People will give
up intellectual property to Yahoo without
                    understanding what they're getting into,"
said Jamie Love of the Ralph
                    Nader-affiliated Consumer Project on
                    Technology.
                    "People have made investments by
promoting their site and people start to
link to them. They're changing the rules in
                    midstream," Love said.
Legal experts say that it's likely Yahoo will
                    change its mind.
"I bet that once it comes to light, they'll
modify it. They can't get away with it.
They'd have people leaving in droves,"
said David Post, a law professor at
                    George Mason University who teaches
                    intellectual property law.
"My prediction is that Yahoo will say,
'That's not what we intended. We don't
really want to do all these things with
their content. We had it as an insurance
                    policy,'" Post said.
                    Some scholarly journals have standardized
similar contracts that are even more
restrictive: They require authors to give
up all rights to the publication. But as
authors began to want to post their
writings on their Web sites, journals have
                    started to become more flexible.
Yahoo will let users keep their existing
GeoCities pages under the old contract,
but customers cannot modify their site
until they agree to the revised terms of
                    service.
                    Some other Web page-hosting services
have similar contracts. Tripod, which is
owned by the parent company of Wired
News, requires its users to grant it "a
                    royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable,
                    nonexclusive, worldwide, unrestricted
license to use, copy, modify, transmit,
distribute, and publicly perform or display
                    the submitted Member Web Page."

Yahoo! Angers Homesteaders June 29, 1999 Cyrus Afzali, InternetNews.com Managing Editor

          Web Developer News Archives

Many Web developers are angrily protesting revisions in Yahoo!-GeoCities terms of service.

The changes, announced June 25, give the company a license to use a GeoCities member's content in any way it wishes and give Yahoo!-GeoCities irrevocable rights to the work. That means developers are excluded from receiving any royalties resulting from profits Yahoo!-GeoCities may make on homesteader sites.

Once word of the changes reached the developer community, reaction was swift.

"This crosses the line. Yahoo! is claiming that by submitting any content, I am granting an unqualified license for all of my content to be used by Yahoo! in any way it chooses and to create any kind of derivative works.

"They can profit in any way, in perpetuity from my copyrighted works, without ever requesting my permission or providing me with any benefits. Even worse, Yahoo! won't even let me edit my GeoCities Web site or remove my content from the service without first accepting the new usage contract," wrote GeoCities member Mark Welch, who also publishes Adbility's Web Publishers' Advertising Guide.

After protesting to Yahoo!-GeoCities, Welch was contacted by a Yahoo! attorney who said the changes were not significant since the previous contract allowed GeoCities to use homesteader content for promotional purposes. The new contract gives Yahoo!-GeoCities the right to use the content however it wishes without giving the developer credit.

Consumer and privacy advocates have criticized the new rules, saying many will agree to the provisions without having a clear understanding of their implications.

However, GeoCities isn't the only Web community that reserves the right to use member content however it wishes. Tripod, owned by Web portal Lycos Inc. also requires users to sign a royalty-free, unrestricted license to use or modify member content.

Subject: [WHITNEY-L] Apropos the recent concern about Yahoo/Geocities To: [email protected]

Dear Friends on several lists:

I have been trying to make sense out of all of this, and thought these two extracted messages would help some of the rest of you. I know that many of us have or have had content on Geocities in one of the Heartland areas dedicated to genealogy.

First is a response from Yahoo/Geocities that came to me via one of the lists to which I am a subscriber.

> Dear XXXXXXXXX, > > Thank you for contacting us re: Yahoo! GeoCities. > > We'd like to be really clear - Yahoo! does not claim to own content > submitted to it by its users. > > Our terms of service require homesteaders to grant us the right to > reproduce and otherwise use their content when we post and maintain it > on the Yahoo! Network. There are simple and important reasons we have > this policy and they are designed to benefit you. Listed below are two > of the biggest reasons: > > 1. When you upload a Web page or image to us, we often need to copy it > to put it on the many computers that we use to serve home pages to > people that want to look at your page. We need you to give us the right > to copy and reproduce that content. > > 2. We also might want to feature your home page on the front page of > Yahoo! GeoCities or elsewhere on the Yahoo! Network, so you can get more > people to see your page. We need to have that right; otherwise we > couldn't reproduce this content. > > Yahoo! has always been focused on providing users with a compelling > experience on the Web, and the Terms of Service are standard throughout > the Yahoo! Network. We hope you understand that all of our actions are > taken with you, the user, in our mind. > > Thank you again for taking the time to write to us. > > Yahoo! GeoCities > www.geocities.com

Now here is a copy of what is supposed to be the current TOS document put out by Yahoo/Geocities.

By submitting Content to any Yahoo property, you automatically grant, or warrant that the owner of such Content has expressly granted, Yahoo the royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, non-exclusive and fully sublicensable right and license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, create derivative works from, distribute, perform and display such Content (in whole or part) worldwide and/or to incorporate it in other works in any form, media, or technology now known or later developed. You acknowledge that Yahoo does not pre-screen Content, but that Yahoo and its designees shall have the right (but not the obligation) in their sole discretion to refuse, edit, move or remove any Content that is publicly available via the Service. Without limiting the foregoing, Yahoo and its designees shall have the right to remove any Content that violates the TOS or is otherwise objectionable. You agree that you must evaluate, and bear all risks associated with, the use of any Content, including any reliance on the accuracy, completeness, or usefulness of such Content. In this regard, you acknowledge that you may not rely on any Content created by Yahoo or submitted to Yahoo, including without limitation information in Yahoo! Message Boards, Yahoo! Clubs, and in all other parts of the Service.

23. COPYRIGHTS and COPYRIGHT AGENTS

Yahoo respects the intellectual property of others, and we ask our users to do the same. If you believe that your work has been copied in a way that constitutes copyright infringement, please provide Yahoo's Copyright Agent the following information:

an electronic or physical signature of the person authorized to act on behalf of the owner of the copyright interest; a description of the copyrighted work that you claim has been infringed; a description of where the material that you claim is infringing is located on the site; your address, telephone number, and email address; a statement by you that you have a good faith belief that the disputed use is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law; a statement by you, made under penalty of perjury, that the above information in your Notice is accurate and that you are the copyright owner or authorized to act on the copyright owner's behalf.

Now I've only got a Bachelor's, Masters and Doctoral degree, not a Law degree, but does anyone but me think that these two paragraphs are not in agreement? Or even in the same universe?

I hope that this is informative to those of you on our common lists.
