I'm sharing a message from a former 'Whitney List person', Carole MacIntosh. She says:
"Last night I dug out an old book my sister gave me awhile back. It has a Whitney in it. Are you still in that group? If so maybe you can pass on what I have and if anyone is interested they can email me and I'll copy it for them.
"I have a book on the History of Sunderland MA. 1673-1899. Includes Leverett and Montague when they split off. Someone in the group had "family" in Montague. Some of my Whitney's lived there too but I could not connect. Not listed in this book as I think they arrived later.
"I have a genealogy for Whitney, Hamilton Appollos (Appollos, Ebenezer, Zechariah, Zechariah, Ebenezer, Richard, John). This Hamilton Whitney is son of Appollos and Charlotte (Hamilton) Whitney. Descended from John Whitney, who was of Watertown, 1635. Hamilton was born 22 June 1826, in Leverett. Married Julia E., dau of Zebina Smith; lived in the meadow; d 3 Sept 1884; wife d 23 Dec 1875.
"It lists his children Louise Elvira (she signed the book I have and marked several pages and made corrections here and there) and Frank Hamilton. I have very little info on these children.
"Also mentioned are, an unknown Whitney who married a Baker, an Elizabeth, Frank H., Harriet, Henry M., Isaac, Laura E., Lucinda, Luther, Russell R., and William M. All these are Whitneys who married into local families. I can look them up is anyone is interested.
"If anyone in the group is interested in Sunderland or Leverett or Montague I can look up the family history."

I have checked my copies of the Whitney Indexes for the NY Census, and in the 1830 there is a William W. Whitney in Broome Co., in Chenango on p. 015. Naturally there have been earlier entries for a lot of Williams, but without any identifying middle initial. No Edwins, Willards or Wesleys to this point.
In the 1840 index, there are two W. Whitneys in Broome Co., one in Chenango (p. 311) and the other in Triangle (p. 426). There is one Willard, in Washington Co., in Granville on p. 206. There are two William W. Whitneys; one in Monroe Co., in Wheatland on p. 190, and the other in Wayne Co., in Lyons on p. 042. No Edwins or Ednas
In the 1850 Census Index for Whitneys in New York three Edwins appear. The first in in Madison Co., in Cazenovia on p. 077; the second being Edwin J. in Genesee Co., in Pavilion on p. 187; the third being Edwin M. in Chenango Co., in Guilford on p. 288. I checked my Handy Book for the establishment of counties in NY, and find it interesting that there is a place named Chenango in Broome County in the earlier indexes and an Edwin in a county named Chenango (which is contiguous to Broome) in the 1850. May mean nothing at all. Also in the 1850 index there are three Willards. One in Monroe Co., in Chili on p. 290; and two in Onondaga Co., one in Skaneateles on p. 447 and the other in Marcellus on p. 336. I find no Wesleys at all, but one William W. in Wayne Co., in Arcadia on p. 268.
Just for fun I checked some of the New England states from which many people moved west to NY and found an Edwin in Athol Twp. of Worcester Co., in 1820 (p. 070), but no Willards or Wesleys in any state for any year up to 1840.
I checked the index to the CT Whitney database and found five Edwins, none with an F. for a middle initial. They were born in 1826, 1844, 1826, 1803 and 1798, the first three born in NY, the last two to the same parents in CT. No Willards or Wesleys.
All the Edwin Whitneys in the Whitny13 (J&E) database were born too late, I think -- birthdates were 1840(ME), 1836(MA), 1842(prob. MA), 1884(PA) and 1843(NY). In my own database, which differs somewhat from Whitny13, I have several more: 1812(MA), 1810(NY), 1831(MA), another 1831(MA), and an 1826(MA). A search for Willards and Wesleys in this source found no entries for either names with a Whitney surname.
I hope this is helpful in some way.

I visited the FHL in Salt Lake recently and was fortunate to find some new information on this couple who are my 9th gGrandparents.
This Benjamin WHITNEY m. Jerusha BROCKWAY abt. 1765, and possibly in Cheshire Co., NH. He d. 20 Nov 1822 Westminster, VT.
In searching NH town records index, I found him mentioned in two land transactions in Marlow, NH. These transactions were between Jerusha Brockway's brother William BROCKWAY and other gentlemen. Benjamin's land was adjoining the BROCKWAY land. Though I can't be positive these are the same two men, Benjamin WHITNEY and William BROCKWAY, it is likely. This would place both families in Marlow, Cheshire Co., NH in 1764. I also found a transcription of the Marlow Town Charter. William BROCKWAY signed it but Benjamin WHITNEY did not.
Does anyone have access to records of Marlow land transactions between 1761, when the town charter was signed and 1764-65? I ran out of time and could not look for more. I suspect that Benjamin bought and/or sold land during that time.
Additionally, I found the death record for Jerusha (BROCKWAY) WHITNEY in Walpole, NH. She died on April 5, 1826 which was a known fact, but this record listed her age of 79 yrs. Finally, I can narrow my search for her birth record to around 1747. This fits the profile of her siblings, many for whom I have found births. I looked through the Barbour Collection (for a 2nd time), Lyme, CT town and church records, as that is supposedly her birth place. I found her older siblings and parents, but no Jerusha. I looked through NH VRs a bit more, as I did find her younger brother's birth recorded in Surry, Cheshire Co, even though he was born in Lyme, CT.
Any suggestions?
I can provide more detail on sources or my known facts if you would like.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If there is not a lot of interest it will be taken off and not put back on. So spread the word and keep trying to get through. When it comes on line the URL will be: > www.familysearch.org <.
I have not been told exactly what will be available but know at least the Ancestral File and Family History Library Catalog will be included.
Family Search is the name of the program we have on CDs in all LDS FHCs. Some public libraries also have this program. FS includes the IGI, Ancestral File, Family History Library Catalog, Social Security Death Records, Koran and Vietnam war death records, and Scottish Church Records.
For those of you not familiar with the various searches, the IGI is the International Genealogical Index. It includes, in alphabetical order, all of the names that have been sent to the Temples to have ordinances performed in their name.
Names in the IGI are usually submitted by members, but not always. Non-members also submit their family names to get them into the IGI. Some of the marriages may have been part of extraction programs. The names were taken from courthouse records and checked and rechecked by several volunteers before being accepted as correct.
Most people do try to send in accurate information but there are many mistakes. My advice is, always check the original source. Use the IGI to find where people with your surname would have lived and order the census and court records from that area.
Ancestral File is Gedcoms of group and pedigree sheets sent in by members and non-members. The name and address of the submitter is included and hopefully will allow you to contact others working on your line. If the address is out of date sometimes a letter to the Membership dept. in Salt Lake will get you a correct address if the person was a member of the LDS church.
Once again, the material is only as good as the research that went into it and some of it is pretty bad. Check it out before you 'adopt' it.
If you find a mistake on Ancestral File, you can send in your corrections, along with your sources of proof, and it will be noted in the next update. The first submitter does not have to provide proof, but you do, if you are making a correction. You can add additions to a file, or submit a new file. You do not have to be a member to submit material.
The Family History Library Catalog is a listing of every book, film and fiche available at the Salt Lake City LDS Family History Library. This allows us to find what is available for each locality, world-wide. It includes the FHL call numbers and a description of what is included in the film/fiche or book.
The material from the books and film/fiche will not be on line. That is not something they can do, at this time. Hopefully it will be a possibility some time in the distant future.
The film and fiche will still have to be ordered through FHC. Microfilm and microfiche are the property of the FHL and are sent into the care of the LDS FHC director and must remain under her/his care until returned. For this reason they are never allowed to be taken from the LDS FHC.
Almost all of the microfilm and microfiche at the LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake City can be ordered into any LDS FHL, anywhere in the world, but there are a few exceptions. Copyright laws prevent them from using material without the written consent of the owner. Some of the film and fiche where filmed by companies other than the LDS Church and permission to circulate these film to LDS FHCs has been denied. There will be a notice included in the description, saying it can not be circulated. Many of the SC microfilm where made by a company who has refused permission to allow the film to be circulated, but there are many microfilm available for SC, some covering the same material that is on the restricted film.
The LDS FHL is a non-profit organization, and that is why it still cost only 15 cents a sheet for a microfiche, $3.25 plus tax to rent a microfilm for a month [may be more in other countries] and the SourceGuide and other home use programs are sold at such a reasonable price. We aren't allowed to make a profit, even in the FHCs.
The books that are listed are not loaned out but can sometimes be obtained through an Inter-library loan through your public library. You can request copies of pages and if a book is indexed, by ordering the index you can see if your people would have been listed. In cases where the copyright has expired the book may have been filmed or can be filmed upon request. Never hurts to ask.

In researching my Ami Whitney6, Jonathan5, Jonathan4, Jonathan3,
Benjamin2, John1 the pension records for War of 1812 service were received from the National Archives. However this is not my Ami Whitney. This one served in Capt. A. Campbell's Co. New York Militia from the 17th day of January 1814 to the 17th of April 1814. His wife is listed as "Rachael Osgood to whom he was married at Almond Allegany Co. NY, on the 15th day of November 1813". Also upon a request from the Department of the interior the Postmaster of Almond N Y. did reply "... that Mr Ami Whitney of this place died at early morning on the fifth day of July Eighteen hundred and eight three (July 5th 1883) Very Truly Yours Jack Dixson" Hope this helps some one. Hi, I'd appreciate help with yet another VT Whitney; I have searched 8 libraries for Pierce and am still looking:
Oliver Perry, d. 12-29-1813 age 69 years 8 mos. Rev. Soldier. None of the Olivers on the existing searchable database seem to fit.
Others buried next to him: Whitney, Hannah, wife of Oliver d 11-29-1841 age 87 years Whitney, Mehitable dau of Oliver and Hannah d 5-31-1863 age 75 years Whitney, Oliver d. 10-3-1865 age 75 y 11 m son of Oliver and Hannah Whitney, Sarah d. 12-9-1813 age 57 years.
Information from Cavendish, VT cemetery listings. I do not find Oliver in 1790 ot 1800 Census, but after so many hours in the library I could be temporarily visually impaired!

Dear Whitney Cousins, Is anyone researching a William (M.?) Whitney s/o William Henry Whitney (b. Watertown, MA) and Fanny Miller possibly from Windham Co, VT? William M. was born in VT in 1804 and married Delilah Williams in VT in 1824. Fanny Miller was b. in VT in 1783. In and about 1830 the family immigrates to Aurora, NY.
I have a lot of information after they settle in NY but very little about them in VT. Would be pleased to learn any little tid bit.

I am researching Whitney's in the Aurora and Erie County areas of NY.
I have a Charles Whitney b 1823 MA, living Ohio in the 1850's, and then Langford, Erie Co, NY from 1865 until his death in 1902. He had a daughter who was listed as Elizabeth in one census and as Fanny in another census. I've been trying to determine who his parents were without much success.
I've wondered if he was somehow related to William Henry Whitney and Fanny Miller.

I've been bothered by the inconclusiveness of my earlier posting on the meaning of "s. p.", so I did a little digging. In my (British) Local Historian's Encyclopedia" I found the following:
obiit sine prole = died without issue -- which is, of course, Latin.
It is often abbreviated to "ob. s. p." but I am quite sure I have seen it shown in the pedigree of a man while being followed by the listing of one or more daughters. The source further defines "proles" as descendants, which at the time of its constant use did mean that there were no sons to continue the family name and the inheritance of the property would fall to the husbands of the daughters. In fact, our Whitney forebears were quite good at finding daughter heiresses that brought with them property from fathers who had no sons.
I hope this proves a more satisfactory explanation.

There are a few abbreviations along this theme (ob and d are often used interchangably, but I usually see d):
d.s.p. (or ob s.p.) = decessit sine prole = died without issue d.s.p.m. = decessit sine prole mascula = died without male issue d.v.p. = decessit vita patria = died in the lifetime of his/her father d.s.p.l. = decessit sine prole legitimate [I forget the Latin word for it

It can sometimes be confusing in when a woman is listed as d.s.p. but there are known children. This sometimes means that the man had been married before but the particular woman in question was not the mother.

Barb Oliver was a member of our list. She descends from John and Elinor. She and I descend from William Henry Whitney and Fanny Miller of MA and VT. Barb was the cousin who opened my line for me and allowed me to trace my way back to John and Elinor. She battled cancer for a number of years and passed away Nov. 23rd last year. I'll always remember her since she played so significant a role in my search of our Whitneys. Perhaps she touched others as well.

There is one "possibility" in the database, the Job Whitney who was the son of Capt. Benjamin Whitney. Capt. Whitney has a tenuous connection to VT through his Revolutionary War service, and one of his other sons, Newhall Whitney, was in the lumber business in VT and Canada, and died in VT.
I would be interested in the take of Jan Whitaker on this question, as I think she is responsible for the limited data we do have on this family.

Henry E. Whitney
Henry E. Whitney, 72, of 30 Hale St., Barre, died Monday morning in
Central Vermont Hospital, Berlin, after having been a patient there
since Thursday.
He was born in Hermon, Maine, January 16, 1903, son of Perley and Lizzie (Willey) Whitney. He was a 1921 graduate of Bangor (Maine) High School, and also attended Bliss Business College in Bangor.
For more than 44 years, he was employed by Swift & Co., being bookkeeper in Bangor and Lewiston, Maine, and manager in Montpelier five years. He retired in 1968.
On Jan. 9, 1923 he married Dorothy DeBeck.
They lived in Maine until 1937 when they moved to Montpelier. He was a member of the Montpelier City Council from 1950 to 1954.
The couple moved to Barre in 1954. He was a member of the East Barre Congregational Church, was a former deacon there and held other offices in the church.
Besides his widow, he leaves a son, Henry E. Whitney Jr., Montpelier, a daughter, Mrs. Hartland (Phyllis) Bancroft, East Montpelier, 13 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday at 1:30 PM in the Whitcomb Funeral Home, 102 Washington Street, Barre, where friends may call Tuesday from 7 to 9:00 PM.
Burial will be in Hope Cemetery.

When I first saw this posting, I thought it "had" to be part of the Daniel and Martha (Burt) Whitney family that settled in Elmira around 1800 from Warwick, NY...but when I started comparing the information with Phoenix, it doesn't fit. I think what is really intriguing is that in the early 1800's there were several Whitney families living in the Elmira area, having no known connection to each other. Considering that the area was settled in the 1790's with Phoenix telling of Indian problems continuing into the 1800's, it's more of a frontier settlement than we might think. Having made one trip to Elmira in search of Whitneys, the existence of so many unaccounted-for families becomes a real head-scratcher. I had hoped to provide some answers, but I can only confirm the puzzle...

According to the information in the Whitney Genealogy - Pierce Project, we have the following from page 62 (note that the Dec 12 1706 birthdate is a transcribing error, should be 1709):

It may not solve his puzzlement, but Hugh D. McLellan in his "History of Gorham, ME.," compiled and edited by his daughter, Katharine B. Lewis, Smith & Sale, Printers, Portland, 1903 pp 827-837 gives this genealogy:

Nathaniel-3 Whitney was living in York as late as 1760. His estate was settled in 1768, by his son Amos.
Nathan-4 Whitney (Nathaniel-3, Benjamin-2, John-1), was one of the early settlers in Gorham. He came to this town from Biddeford, where his children were born. In 1752, he purchased of Enoch Freeman of Falmouth the thirty acre lot, 26, with the dwelling house and barn thereon. He was a prominent and influential citizen of Gorham and served on many important town committees. He was also active in religious matters. We find him recorded as an early elder in the church. He married Lydia, daughter of Matthias Young of York, Me.

"guarantees" of "speedy delivery" and "low price" .
My order was placed in October of 1998 and as of this posting I have not received the order or a refund after numerous contacts with Steven Jensen at this firm . In his occasional replies he repeatedly gave false information to me as to the status of the order and cashed the check when mentioned stopping payment on it .I have copies of all documents and correspondences for those interested .
Complaints have been filed with the Better Business Bureau and the United States Postal Inspectors , they have informed me that even they can't order this company to give a refund , but may seek criminal charges . I guess small claims court is next .
If you are seeking genealogy resources......consider my experiences with this "Firm".

My only information pertains to Nathan-6 Whitney (David-5, Nathan-4, Nathaniel-3, Benjamin-2, John-1) and his descendants. Nathan-6's connection with Virginia was with the northwestern portion of the state, which ultimately became West Virginia. Nathan-6 was born Sept 10, 1769 in Gorham, ME, lived in Virginia (now WV) at the time of the 1830, 1840 and 1850 Census-taking, and died in Marietta, Ohio June 4, 1852.

The Search Engine should now correctly locate words that span two lines of text. I modified the search engine routine so it locates lines that end in hyphens and concatenates the split word, leaving everything else aligned properly. This should ensure that searches return every match and not miss any due to the large number of hyphenated words in the files. If there are any perl programmers out there, this is the single line command that I used to do this:

There are at least two books written on the subject of Myra Clark, the daughter of Daniel Clark, America's representative in Louisiana at the time of the Louisiana Purchase (1803). Myra married first to William Whitney, son of Josiah, of Broome County, New York. They had two children. Myra, who had been raised by a Davis family, and William went to New Orleans in search of Myra's birthright, to discover that she was heir to probably the largest fortune in the entire country at that time, but her inheritance had been stolen from her.
The legal battles began and form the foundation for some serious legal principles of our American justice system. William Whitney was badly mistreated and eventually died prematurely of Yellow Fever in one of the major epidemics that decimated New Orleans from time to time.
Myra eventually remarried to General Edmond Gaines, who continued in Whitney's footsteps in the unconditional support of Myra and her seemingly hopeless cause of re-establishing her birthright. General Gaines eventually died also, leaving Myra to continue her battle alone.
The story itself is beautiful and tragic. It makes interesting reading. Of course there are some interesting genealogical tidbits scattered throughout.

Found an interesting few paragraphs concerning the home and lifestyle of Mrs. George Q. Whitney of New Orleans (died 1933). She was the former Elise McStea, daughter of Nelson McStea, a prominent merchant.
The book is entitled "The Romantic New Orleanians" by Robert Tallant, E.P. Dutton & Co., Inc., New York, 1950, at Pages 257 & 258.
George Q. Whitney was the grandson of Charles Morgan, the owner of Morgan Steamship Lines, and he founded the Whitney National Bank in N.O.
The book describes the Whitney mansion on St. Charles Avenue in the Garden District of N.O. as a showplace. It had a large garden and was surrounded by an iron fence. Mrs. Whitney had a penchant for fresh flowers around the beautifully furnished home.
Mrs. Whitney was a lavish hostess, was very interested in opera, and was a prominent philanthropist. Her estate was divided at her death and the Whitney mansion was razed.
Just thought this might interest someone. I have a copy of the pages if anyone would like to know more.

Valley Families" by Maryly B. Penrose, Volume 2, Genealogical
Publishing Company, Inc., at Page 903:

A death record of Laura Whitney, w/o Asakel Whitney, who died 13 August 1833 at age 26 and was burned in Section 12 of Colonial Cemetary, Johnstown (JC: 189).
A probate abstract for Moses Whitney of Palatine dated 4 May 1814 and probated 21 June 1814. It lists his legatees as his brother William, his son Moses, and his brother-in-law Dr. Levi Maxwell (and his wife Sally).

The first whitney ancestor we have identified so far is Edmund Whitney. He is listed as the father on the marriage certificate of his son Edmund Whitney who was born about 1818 in England. On October 26, 1840 he married Frances Hope in Bowdon, Cheshire, England. Her father is shown as William Hope. On May 7, 1841 they had a son Isaac E. Whitney. When Isaac was about a year old, they moved to New York, USA, and had George and Alfred in 1843 and 1845. My great grandfather Oliver was born August 31, 1848 in Bloomfield, Essex Co., New Jersey, followed by Sabina Whitney in June 1850. This is where we found them on the 1850 census. Later information mentions a Thomas, and an Edmund Jr., but we don't know if they died as infants or when they were born. We do know that Edmund Sr., sometime in 1850, went off to Louisiana to look for land and died from Yellow Fever.
The period between 1850, and 1855 is still a mystery. We don't know if Frances remarried and moved, or moved her family to be near relatives, but we do know that in the spring of 1855 they all arrived in Harrison County, Iowa.
August 1998 Update - We haven't made any progress in finding the parents in England, but we have greatly increased our knowledge of their descendants in the United States.

HI All;
I called the LDS center in Salt Lake and they told me that the site
isn't
open and ready yet and no one is supposed to know yet.
They are blown away over how many calls they have gotten about the
site. They are doing the fine tuning of the site now and when its ready
the password requirement will disappear. They gave out the wrong url so
they could get this site ready and didn't thing we were resourceful
enough to find the actual site. Wrong :~). Well they said it will be
ready
shortly but would not give me a actual date. I was talking to a person
in
the area that is putting up the site so just be patient a little longer

say.

To all of you interested in the Family Search site.....my brother in law is an employee of the LDS Church and was the head of Family Search for some time. I wrote him yesterday about the site to say that no one could get on because the server was busy.....this is his reply.

They don't want anyone on the server now. They aren't ready for any Beta type testing. They took it down today to put in special passwords. Somebody leaked or someone discovered the network's pre-beta test address and put the address up on the net. The internet system will not be ready for any outside internal evaluators for some period of time. Can't tell you when -- I don't think anyone knows.

The fact that in the marriage record, Mercy is said to be "of Lisbon" is a strong indication that one of the three birth records should apply to her. Clearly the 1814 birth is too late, and probably applies to the wife of Charles H. KIMBALL. The 1784 birth seems possible, but quite a bit too early. The most probably solution is that the wife of John FRANCIS was Mercy Sutherland WHITNEY, whose birth is given above in 1802.
Of course, this falls far short of proof!

Thank you! I am enjoying working on the Pierce Project immensely. I think the main reason is because of the overwhelming response and enthusiasm that the members of the Whitney Research Group have shown. I'm having a hard time keeping up with you! I personally can't wait for the project to be done - not so it'll be over, but because then the real fun begins. I can't wait to do a search on "Vt." and find all of the Whitney families who ever lived in Vermont and link them with the census and warning out records that I have collected. I'm sure many of you can think of other possibilities that the completion of this project will make possible.

I really don't think you would need a guided tour--everyone there using the
library is really friendly and helpful, locations are labeled very clearly, and there are plenty of volunteers who will breathe down your neck.
My suggestion for where to stay is make reservations through your local AAA
office. I discovered this by accident a few months ago when I had to go to San Diego for a wedding. The AAA agent negotiated a very nice price for me and was able to locate us in a most convenient area--something I couldn't have done on my own being unfamiliar with the area. Downtown SLC has many places to stay within walking distance of the library. The bus system is also excellent.
Allow more time than you think you will need. There is lots of stuff there. Last time I went to SLC I took my laptop to the library and that was my most
productive visit ever. I sat there all day and downloaded information! (I guess this also made me look Very Serious, something I rarely am.) frances xoxoxo

The following slip of paper was photocopied and bound into my version of the Pierce book. I assume that the original sheet is in the copy owned by the New England Historic Genealogical Society (the copy used for their photoduplication program, perhaps not the same as their shelf copy).
The data refers to Lucy C. WHITNEY, b. June 30, 1830, daughter of Appollus WHITNEY (Ebenezer, Zachariah, Zachariah, Ebenezer, Richard, John) and his wife Charlotte Hamilton. Details of this family can be found on page 333 of the Pierce book, which is now online.

Charlotte Arabella (Boutwell) Robbins, wife of M. Eugene Robbins of Putney, Vt., died sud denly. Tuesday Oct. 11, 1927.
Back of slip:
Lyman Austin Boutwell, died at Brattleboro, Vt., Aug. 26, 1912, aged (Vt. ?6 yrs. 5 mo. 18 da. Buried in Townshend,

The nickname Nancy is used for Ann, Anne, Anna, Annette, Hannah, and variants of them. I looked for all these names. I have found two possibilities, but no proof for either:
1. Ann/Anne-6 WHITNEY, b. 10 Feb 1755, Newton, MA, daughter of Joseph-5 and Mary (HASTINGS) WHITNEY [Timothy-4, John-3, John-2, John-1]. Her father lived in Roxbury, Newton, Dorchester, Orange, and Warwick, MA, Gilsum, NH, and Lima, NY. See <http://www.erols.com/rlward1/whitney/john/john12.html#i298>.
2. Ann Mellens-5 WHITNEY, b. 1 Jun 1753, Holliston, MA, bp. 3 Jun 1753, Medway, MA, daughter of Elias-4 and Elizabeth (MELLEN) WHITNEY [Jonathan-3, Benjamin-2, John-1]. I note that the marriage took place in Sharon, MA, which is fairly close to where each of these families lived, about equidistant from both.
Perhaps with these clues, you will be able to prove either one or the other of these individuals is your ancestor.

The marriage record from Sharon, MA, Vital Records, states:
"WHITNEY, Nancy of Roxbury and Benja[min] Puffer, Oct. 20, 1778."
This indicates a connection with Roxbury, MA.

The Pierce Project was started just 55 days ago. We are currently 45% Complete and 86% Adopted.
Of the 18 unadopted sets, I have 1 set scanned and ready for adoption, 8 sets which I expect to receive photocopies of in the near future, 6 sets which I expect to receive scans of soon and another 3 sets outstanding.
If you want to adopt one of the last remaining sets, please let me know if you'd prefer scans or photocopies. If photocopies, please send your snail mail address.
If you are currently assigned a set and have not yet turned it in, I am all caught up and ready to edit your set and get it online. There are 54 sets which people have been assigned and have not completed.

Thank you for asking this question, and thanks to Deane Merrill for forwarding it to me. I am taking the liberty of posting this to the WHITNEY-L genealogy discussion list.
My records do not contain any mention of the gentleman you seek, but they pertain almost exclusively to events prior to 1850.
There are several avenues of approach to your problem. Perhaps the simplest is to attempt to locate him in the 1900, 1910, and 1920 censuses of the United States. There are state-by-state Soundex or Miracode indices to these records for most states and years (but not all), which could be searched. Your person would be identified by his surname (Whitney, soundex code W350), given names (John), place of birth (England) and year (1868). This should produce a very short list of individuals satifying those constraints. You can then look up the individuals in the census records themselves, and discover what is reported on each. Perhaps that will allow you to narrow the list to a single individual, perhaps by using his occupation, or the number of years in this country.
Once you have a geographical location, you can think about finding records of him owning real estate, probate records, marriage records, and so on. Eventually you would want to find his death certificate, which would name his parents as well as his exact date and place of birth, which would be proof of his identity.
The indices and census records themselves can be accessed at your local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS or Mormon) Family History Center, through microfilm rental. The rate is quite reasonable, about £2 per reel of microfilm for a two-to-three-week rental. They can also be accessed at any branch of our National Archives here in the U.S., if you can make arrangements with someone to do that for you.

Hi - There are at least two of us active in tracing the Whitney family in Canada with that name.
I am in the west in Alberta, and am tracing the John and Elinor Branch. My
relatives came up to Prescott, Ontario (Augusta township) in 1798 and settled there alomng with decsendants of teh Henry Whitney family as well.
There is another W.G. Whitney (same initials) in Ontario, who is an architect. He is famous on the Whitney mailing list for having a huge database of Whitneys in his computer. He is tracing the Henry Whitney branch . Actually I am interested in both branches. I don't believe that that are really separate and distinct.

I have some sources saying that James Lewis Whitney was the son of Joseph Harris and Emmaline Whitney. But wouldn't that make him a Harris instead of a Whitney? I found a post on the Steuben County, NY list that has a James Hervey Halliday and Eliza Whitney. There son was Belden Whitney Halliday born 8/1825. Helen Sophia Nash's parents are Ephraim Nash born in Farnham Feb 1, 1820 and Harriet Parker of Stukely and they were married March 10, 1846. Both died in Abbotsford, Quebec
In letters written to my GGrandfather there are letters from a fellow who refers to him as his brother, and he signs as "Alonzo the Wanderer" who left Quebec and headed to Australia, unmarried, and died there.
As my Mom was growing up she recalls her dad talking about cousins and from her Aunt's Address Book we have the following:

We just had to share our joy at finally finding the link last night between our previous "unconnected" Whitney branch and the large John and Elinor Whitney family tree. We can thank Tim Doyle and the contingent of Pierce transcribers -- along with the search engine on Tim's Pierce book web site -- for making possible this discovery!
The two of us have been rather passive subscribers to the on-line Whitney research group for the past three years, reading all the posts and hoping eventually to find some information to extend our Whitney line back beyond g- g-grandfather Joel Whitney (d. 1891 in Ramona, CA). Through WHITNEY-L, we had read numerous references to the Pierce book but had never obtained a copy. Last night, we visited Tim's site displaying the half-completed Pierce book project, searched on "Joel Whitney", and found our guy! Joel is on page 333 (give or take a page) as the third child of William Whitney 1786-1847 of Harvard, MA (Enoch, David, Thomas, Thomas, Thomas, John) and Betsey FARNSWORTH.
Hallelujah! Seven generations of Whitney data instantly came into focus as OUR Whitney line. Yee-haw!! Our Joel had been in Pierce all along, but it took the transcription project to make it accessible to us and to allow for this happy discovery. Additional searches of the portions of the Pierce book already transcribed yielded a write-up on Joel's brother Henry S. Whitney and their great-grandfather David Whitney. We look forward to additional discoveries of our blood kin as the transcription process moves toward completion.
Now the Whitney vital records on Robert Ward's site, and the Whitney gedcom sent to us a couple of years ago by Jon Aston, provide a great deal of useful information on Whitneys that we can now identify as our direct ancestors.
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU to Robert, Jon, Tim, and all the rest of our Whitney cousins who have worked hard to share information and make information accessible. We were pretty sure we were connected to the big Whitney family, but it's great to know for sure and to be able to trace out the exact path.

The first thing I would do if I were you would be to get
the 1850 Census record listed above and make sure that the

This is my first post to this list since subscribing and it's to say a great big THANK YOU! When reading the last post about Israel Whitney, I remembered another query board post about Israel and checked it out. To my great delight, Tim Doyle had responded and sent the Pierce Project pages to look on.
I have been searching for information about Israel Whitney who married Susannah Gerry for months and just kept coming up with dead ends. Betsey Whitney, Israel's daughter, was my ggggrandmother and died in Quebec, Canada in 1846. I'm so very glad I subscribed to this list!

Wishful thinking would like to hook this Orson to the Mexico, Oswego, NY bunch (Matthias, Cornelius, Matthias, Cornelius, Joshua, John) but census records don't seem to support this. My best bet is probably the Orsen WHITNEY listed in the 1850 OH census for Ashtabula County, but I haven't any other clues. I'm curious about the Orson listed in your family line. I have furnished this before, quite a while ago, but there have been a great
number of Whitneys joining the Roots Group since then, so have repeated it here.
Sometime ago, when furnishing this before, Robert Ward referred me to
"Descendants of Henry Whitney" and suggested to me to check out the Henry6 Whitney's of New York, as it showed he married a Polly Young at Sidney, Delawre County New York; however in checking by mail with the counties back there in New York learned that this was not the right Polly shown in the above census.
I had much correspondence with the Historical people back in Iroquois County
in illinois, as well as Kankakee and Du Page Counties, where I obtained records of Daniel James marrying Dilly Jane Flint, two children being born in Du Page County, Illinois, two in Wisconsin, and the final one in Anderson County, Kansas, but got an absolute blank on Polly or any the rest of Daniel James Family indicated therein. I checked the Illinois Census in 1860, 1870, etc. but never found Polly or any of the other children again. Also checked the Wisconsin Census with no luck. Undoubtedly, Polly either died, married again, or moved clear away somewhere as I could not find any trace of any of them other than G. Grandpa Daniel James.
Consequently, I have left the subject of Daniel James lie dormant for quite
a while, while I concentrated upon his wife, my Great Grandmother Dilly Jane Flint. I have been able to trace her line clear back through the Revolutionary War, and even to my 7th Great Grandmother Hannah Emerson Dustin, who on March 15, 1697, was kidnapped by the Indians in Massachusetts, along with the lady who was taking care of her. She actually was in bed after the birth of her 12th child when the Indians Struck. They killed the baby and took both Hannah and her friend captive. Along with a young boy who had been captured by the Indians in 1695, Hannah, her friend and the boy killed and scalped ten of the Indians on March 30, 1897, and escaped. There is a large monument in Haverhill, Massachusetts, with a full size statue of Hannah thereat, with full explanation of her deeds.
Pardon me for digressing, but In this procurement of lineage clear back
there, I was able to prove Revolutionary War participation by Samuel Flint, which qualified me as a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, which became active June 1, 1998.
So much for all this history. I thought that maybe in all the new Whitneys
that have joined the Whitney Roots Group someone may have run across relatives , etc. that might have led beyond Polly mentioned in the 1850 Census, and could advise me so I could again get back to tracing my Whitney line on back to the beginning to John and Elinor Whitney.

Re: Orson Whitney I have no other info on Orson. I found his birth date in Compiled Birth Records of New York. Many of my ancestors were from Erie Co. Pa. In fact my gggrandomother Mary Emma Whitney married John Wesley Davis from Erie Co. Pa. Since I posted this info I have found Amasa (listed as Amisa) Whitney in the 1835 New York State Census in Courtland Co., Tn. of Virgil. He seems to be living alone with first 2 children born in NY, Elviria and Olive. His other children were born in Bingham,Pa. I do not know if this will be of any help to you. Andersonville Prisoners of War, 1863-65
The most infamous Confederate prison camp of the Civil War, Andersonville housed an estimated 45,000 Union soldiers during the war. This database is a collection of records compiled by the National Park Service of camp inmates between 1863 and 1865. Researchers will find rank, unit, death, and capture information in addition to the inmate's name and state of residence. In some cases, the National Park Service has more information for some soldiers. This article is excerpted from an article that originally appeared in Ancestry Magazine, May/June 1996, (Vol. 14, No. 1). Andersonville National Historic Site is located ten miles northeast of Americus, Georgia, on Highway 49. The 475-acre Park consists of a national cemetery and a prison site. The park is open to visitors every day of the year. Andersonville, or Camp Sumter as it was officially known, was the largest of many Confederate military prisons established during the Civil War. It was built in early 1864 after Confederate officials decided to move the large number of Federal prisoners in and around Richmond to a place of greater security and more abundant food. During the fourteen months it existed, more than 45,000 Union soldiers were confined there. Of these, almost 13,000 died from disease, poor sanitation, malnutrition, overcrowding, or exposure to the elements.
The first prisoners were brought to Andersonville in February 1864. During the next few months, approximately 400 prisoners arrived each day until, by the end of June, some 26,000 men were confined in a prison area originally intended to hold 10,000. The largest number held at one time was more than 32,000 in August 1864. Handicapped by deteriorating economic conditions, an inadequate transportation system, and the need to concentrate all available resources on its army, the Confederate government was unable to provide adequate housing, food, clothing, and medical care to the Federal captives. These conditions, along with a breakdown of the prisoner exchange system, created much suffering and a high mortality rate.
Card files exist on most of the survivors of the prison. The files contain a listing of the dead from most of the Civil War prisons, both North and South. [The Friends of the Park has] descriptions of those prisons, as well as information on the history of the park; state monuments; the Woman's Relief Corp's role in the park; the work that the Civilian Conservation Corps did in the park during the 1930s; Clara Barton at Andersonville in 1865; and the marking of the graves.
Andersonville has been a national cemetery since 1865 and is considered a working cemetery with two to five funerals a week. Conditions for burial are that the individual must be an Honorable Discharged Veteran having completed 180 days of active duty, a reservist who has completed twenty years of service, the spouse and dependent children under eighteen years old. Hello Whitney researchers.
I am new to your list and am hoping that someone can point me in the right direction to find the ancestors of our 3rd Great Grandmother, Martha "Patsey" Whitney.
Thus far we have the following:
Richard Corbitt b. abt 1791 in Southampton Co., Va. d. 1838 also in Southampton Co., Va. He married Martha "Patsey" Whitney 21 Feb, 1826 in Southampton Co., Va. Martha was born abt 1805 in Southampton Co and died June 1838 in Southampton Co., Va. According to Black Creek Baptist Church records she and Richard passed away about the same time.
We believe that Martha was the daughter of John Whitney and Ann Bracy. John Whitney was born abt 1780 in Southampton Co and died abt 1844 in Isle of Wight Co., Va. He married Ann Bracy 18 Dec 1800. At this point in time we can find no proof that Martha is daughter of John and Ann.
John Whitney was the son of Joshua Whitney b. abt 1750 in Southampton Co., Va. and he died in 1814 also in Southampton Co. Va. He married Ann before 1777 in Southampton, he also married Dorothy "Dolly" Douglas 20 Oct 1795 in Southampton Co., Va.
Joshua was the son of Joshua Whitney, born about 1720 in Isle of Wight Co., Va. and died 1762 in Southampton Co., Va. He married Margaret Joyner about 1750. The will of this Joshua was recorded in Southampton Will Book 2, p. 3. He made bequests to son Joshua land adj. George Lawrence, Charles Lawrence, Elisha Ballard and Bennett Hilsman; to son Elisha, land bought in Isle of Wight of George Brewer and land in Southampton adj. Giles Joyner; son Giles all the remainder of this tract of land and plantation whereon I now live; wife Margery, daugher Amy Whitney. Executors to acknowledge deed in Isle of Wight to Thomas Lankford for land adj. John Lankford and William Bulls. Ex. wife Margary and friend John Joyner. ( The Joyner's and Lankford's are also within the Corbitt Ancestors).
This Joshua was the son of Joshua Whitney who died 1735 and married a Martha ?? We believe that this Joshua is the father of Joshua who died 1762. This Joshua was a mariner who owned the ship Ketring (also called Catherine) and came to Isle of Wight County from Bermuda. He bought land in Isle of Wight Co., Va. in 1721, he sold this land in 1734. He also bought 150 A. in Isle of Wight in 1725 from Christopher Reynolds. In his will he left this land to be sold for the benefit of his children. His will was recorded in both Isle of Wight and North Carolina. He died in 1735 and made the following bequests: To wife Martha Negro wench Deansia; to son David girl Maria and 1/4 of sloop Ketring; to son Jeremiah (Jerimih) man Frake and 1/4 of sloop Ketring; to son Samuel Mulatto boy Derrie and 1/4 of sloop; to dau. Ketring mulatto wench Jean, cedar chest, bed; to son Joseph 3 silver spoons; to dau Ruth 3 silver spoons; to son Francis {one abstract says Thomas, others Francis} 3 silver spoons. My plantation on Pagan Creek and stock to be sold and divided among my wife and children. Sons David and Jeremiah Ex.
A reference in Isle of Wight deeds 1746 states that Jeremiah Whitney is the surviving Exc. of Joshua Whitney, and that he sold 150 A. belonging to Joshua and that the proceeds were divided among his children. Deed Book 7, p. 309.
David must have been dead at this time, Jeremiah died in 1782 - there is reference to his estate and wife Susanna in Virginia. There are references to Samuel Whitney and Francis Whitney in Edgecombe Co., NC in the 1740-1760 period.
Joshua does not mention a son Joshua {unless Joseph was really Joshua}, but there is a will in Isle of Wight of Eleanor Giles in 1734 that makes a bequest to Joshua Whitney Jr., the son of my grandaughter. At this time he was under 21, so he would be one of the younger children - possibly born about 1720.
Can someone either confirm or disprove this relationship? Any information will be helpful in helping us unravel this mystery and give Martha "Patsey" a home.
