Re: Family of Nathan Whitney

Have received this info from Christopher Edy, one of our new members. Christopher, have you added everyone to your address book? This list contains only those on CompuServe. Since the limit on CServe message recipients is 50, I'll copy you on the next one too, so you can see our whole membership list (all 69 of us counting myself). :-) Jeanne

Subject: Whitney Women

Some interesting info came to me today from one of our CompuServe members about SARAH HAGAR and RUTH REYNOLDS:

TO: Jeanne Muse, 102256,2027 FROM: Bert Smith, 102513,3332 DATE: 5/3/96, 9:17 PM

Re: Whitney

Jeanne, I haven't gotten around to putting all the Whitney folks in my address book. If you think the following is worthwhile feel free to forward it to the group:

When I was finally able to connect my Lois Whitney to the John and Elinor family, I gained five new surnames to explore. (That's the nature of this endeavor, isn't it?) Neither Eli.zip nor Whiteny7.zip gave information on Sarah Hagar or Ruth Reynolds. Savage's Dictionary sheds some light on both these ladies.

Sarah Hagar was the daughter of William and Mary Bemis Hagar of Watertown. William and Mary married 20 Mar 1645. Sarah, born 3 Sep 1651, and married Nathaniel Whitney on 12 Mar 1674. Savage, Vol 2.

Ruth Reynolds was the daughter of Robert Reynolds of Watertown and his wife Mary. Savage refers to an article in the Genealogical Register IX, 137 which contains an abtract of Robert's will in which he refers to daughter Ruth Whitney, wife of John. [This, of course, is John, Jr.] Savage concluded that all Robert's children were born in England. [James Savage, Dictionary of First Settlers of N. E. Vol 3, page 526.]

By the way, Jeanne, I have a son who works at Thoms Rehab. Hosp. in Asheville. I dare say you drive within half mile of there everyday going to work. I live in Greensboro.

Bert

P.S. Everyone please note that there is a limit on CompuServe of 50 "recipients" per e-mail message. Therefore, I have split my messages into 2 groups - those on CompuServe and those on other services. If you need info on our other members, let me know. :-) Jeanne (Whitney) Muse [email protected] 5/4/96

Re: Lois Whitney (1738) Descendants

Hi everybody! One of our members, Bert Smith ([email protected]) is directly descended from Lois Whitney (b. 2 FEB 1738/9) and Abiel Chamberlin (b. 6 OCT 1734) through their son Ephraim Chamberlin (b. 27 FEB 1770) & his wife Dorcas Carter (b. 22 OCT 1777).

My records (from my ELI.GED -- available on both AOL and CServe as ELI.ZIP) indicate that Lois Whitney was the 9th child of Nathaniel Whitney (III) (1696-1776) and Mary Child. I have Abiel Chamberlin in my records as ABIHAIL CHAMBERLAIN (different spelling of both 1st & last names).

Bert has a gedcom file which he is willing to share with anyone who has interest in this line.

Thank you, Bert!

Subject: Lydia Whitney

Janet Bailey;

I looked up Lydia Whitney in the Pierce book and have the following listing from page 123:

Lydia Whitney b 2/13/1773, Father David Whitney, farmer of Conway, Mass. She married Mark Banks of Montague. Her connection to John is as follows:

John + Elinor Benjamin + Jane Jonathan + Susanna Jonathan + Lydia Jones David + Rachel

You asked about how to buy the F.C. Pierce book, I called the Higginson Book Company (see below) and ordered it using my credit card, it takes about 10 weeks to deliver.

The Decendants of John Whitney by F.C. Pierce - Price $95.00 Higginson Book Company 148 Washington St. PO Box 778 Salem, MA 01970 Phone (508) 745-7170

Mike Peacock;

We have conflicting information on Oliver Whitney, according to FC Pierce, Oliver b 12/1/1724 married Dorcas Warren and lists 3 children; Ezra, Oliver, and Jacob b 1770.

Jeanne Muse's Eli.GED lists Oliver Whitney b 12/1/1724 m to Dorcas Forbush

and lists no children, perhaps she or you can shed some light on the difference.

Hello All

Paul Truax

Welcome to the Whitney Research Group, I looked up your Nancy in the Pierce book and found her on page 211, she is connected to John and Elinor as follows:

John + Elinor Jonathan + Lydia Jones Joseph + Rebecca Barge Joseph + Abigail Nutting James + ? Daniel + Content Stiles Nancy + James Merrel Henry Merrel res of Reading Vermont

I hope the information is helpful, if you have the rest of the line and wish to have it added to our Whitney database, please send it via GED file or any convinient form.

Janet Bailey I checked Pierce and he has the spelling as you have, my typo, sorry.

Jeanne Muse and Mary Ellen;

I received only part of the message from Mary Ellen, please re-send it, it mentions Eli.GED, which I attached.

Subject: Updates

Hello Whitneys! I spent the weekend going over our "database" with a fine tooth comb. I noticed some "dangling" families (children shown without parents, etc.) which I fixed. Also added some descendants of the MERRILL line (provided by Paul Truax) and the LOIS WHITNEY/ABIEL CHAMBERLIN line (provided by Bert Smith).

Specifically, the family of BENJAMIN WHITNEY (1660-1736) and ABIGAIL HAGAR as well as the family of ISAIAH WHITNEY (1671-1712) and SARAH WOODWARD have been fixed to show the children with their parents.

I added some information from my private database on the ENOCH LAWRENCE and RUTH WHITNEY (1645-1718) line. I have much more information on the LAWRENCE families documented from the Vital Records of the towns of Groton & Concord, Massachusetts, "Genealogy of the Family of John Lawrence" by Rev. John Lawrence, 1869, as well as "The Groton Register", by Elinor Skeate, 1993.

Anyone interested in receiving a GEDCOM file on any of the above lines feel free to let me know.

Following through on some older inquiries (if I've duplicated an earlier response I apologize):

To: Jon Aston ([email protected]) The above additions & fixes were done to your file DATAJON.GED, sent to me by Allan Green. I have kept my original ELI.GED in tact & will use your DATAJON as my "working" file. I will actively pursue conflicts in our data as follows:

OLIVER WHITNEY (1724) who married DORCAS Forbush? or Warren?

NATHANIEL WHITNEY (1696) death date conflict (1728? or 1776?) - Ross Andrews info states 1728

MARTHA WHITNEY (dau. of SAMUEL b. 1710/11 & ELIZABETH HASTINGS) birth date 1759? or 1757? - Ross Andrews info states 1757

MERCY ROBINSON (daug. of Wm. Robinson & Elizabeth Cutter and spouse of NATHANIEL II 1675-1730) birth date 6 Sep 1676 or 7 Aug 1676 Jon, also see my question to Karen Grubaugh below.

To: Mary Jean Manroe ([email protected]) You indicated in your "poll" response your interest in the parents of ALICE WHITNEY who married NATHANIEL WOODS. Alice was the daughter of DEACON JOSHUA WHITNEY (son of John & Elinor) and ABIGAIL TARBELL. I personally have more info on the WOODS line if you are interested.

To: Walter H. Hall ([email protected]) Your family of JOSEPH WHITNEY (b. 10 Mar 1672/3 Watertown, Mass) & REBECCA BURGE (Berge) is in our database. His line goes John & Elinor-->Jonathan & Lydia Jones-->Joseph & Rebecca. However, I cannot find anything on JOSEPH WHITNEY who married HANNAH CHANDLER in our database at this time. I'll continue to look for them.

To: Mary Ellen Sharp ([email protected]) I'd be interested in getting more info on your SIMCI WHITNEY and BARILLA WHITNEY (descendants of SAMUEL WHITNEY & PHEBE HARRINGTON, I believe) to add into our database. Could you send me those families?

To: Karen Grubaugh ([email protected]) In your "poll" response you needed proof of parentage of HENRY WHITNEY (1738) who married HANNAH TOMBS. I noticed that he is in our database as the son of BENJAMIN WHITNEY & ABIGAIL HAGAR. Did you find proof -- or should we look further for it? (Jon, is it in Pierce?)

Anyone who can shed more light on any of the conflicts, get in touch! I'm going to see what I can find in GENSERV & will report any findings to the group.

Subject: Oliver Whitney Conflict

Hello again everyone! I ran a search in GenServ on OLIVER WHITNEY (b. 1 Dec 1724) & found information to make me believe that Pierce may have incorrect information in his book about DORCAS' last name being WARREN. Oliver had a -daughter- named Dorcas who married Stephen WARREN. This is what I found -- the following is NEW INFORMATION & should be added to our database.

Subject: Mercy Robinson & Nathaniel Whitney

Hi. Once again GenServ has given me some valuable information. While we have much of what is given here, the conflicting dates for Mercy Robinson's birth as well as her son Nathaniel's death date are solved.

Again this information was provided by Matthew Adair (see the last part of the GenServ report for his addresses & phone numbers). He has done substantial research on this line. Since I don't know if the e-mail address is still current, I have sent him an e-mail message asking him to join our group. I hope he responds, as I believe he can help many of us with our searches.

Here is the report I received about Mercy Robinson which resulted in a complete family group record with VERY interesting notes on her son, Nathaniel Whitney & his wife Mary Child. Enjoy! :-) Jeanne

        Genserv Report Output: rv3 21 May 1996

Mercy ROBINSON (Idno I312), born 7 Aug 1676, Cambridge Vllg.,
died 31 Dec 1740, Watertown, Massachusetts, daughter of William
ROBINSON (Idno I1315) and Elizabeth CUTTER (Idno I1316). Married
7 Nov 1695, Watertown, Massachusetts, Nathaniel WHITNEY (Idno
I311), born 25 Mar 1675, Watertown, Massachusetts, died 23 Sep
1730, Watertown, Massachusetts, son of Nathaniel WHITNEY (Idno
I1306) and Sarah HAGAR (Idno I1307).
Children of Mercy ROBINSON and Nathaniel WHITNEY:
1 Nathaniel WHITNEY (Idno I283), born 23 Jan 1695, Watertown,
Massachusetts, died 27 Jan 1776, Westborough, Worcester,
Massachusetts. The birth record of Nathaniel Whitney lists
his birth date as January 23, 1695-6, which would mean his
mother was seven months pregnant at the time of her wedding.
While not unheard of, these circumstances were certainly un-
usual. Normally in a case like this, there would be some
punishment dictated by the courts, and I have not come
across any such record. Were it not for the fact that
Nathaniel's age at death is provided to us, it would seem a
mistake had been made in the recording of his birth, espe-
cially since it is recorded on a page of births from late
1696 and early 1697.[7/2:9] The marriage of Nathaniel Whit-
ney and Mary Child can be found in the Weston Vital
Records.[2] However since there is no known birth record
for Mary in existence, her ancestry had to be found by other
means. One clue comes from Parkman's diary entry of Novem-
ber 11, 1755 "At Eve also Mr. Whitney and his wife with
their Brother Child return from the Funeral of his Sister
Liscomb who has dy'd somewhat suddenly ...".[4/297] The
terms "Brother" and "Sister", as was customary for the
times, covered relationships of brother and sister but also
brother-in-law and sister-in-law, as did the terms father,
mother, etc. Thus this passage indicates Nathaniel and Mary
with her brother attended the funeral of Hannah Liscomb, who
was Mary's sister. Thus finding the parents of Hannah would
also give Mary's parents. However Hannah's birth is not
recorded either. Furthermore Hannah's name was Fay at the
time of her marriage: "Samuel Liscomb of Southborough mar-
ried Hannah Fay at Westborough on March 7, 1733-4".[3] Pro-
bate records can be used to clear up the entire issue howev-
er. John Child of Waltham, MA, in his will dated April 6,
1742 and proved Dec. 14, 1747, mentions his daughter Hannah
Liscomb, a married daughter Mary (married name not given),
as well as other children. "I give and Bequeath unto my
five Grand children, being children of my Daughter Hannah
Liscum which she had by her former Husband John Fay ... I
Give and Bequeath unto my Daughter Mary the Sum of Thirty
pounds which sum together with what she hath already had at
marriage is her portion".[1/25:218] In 1720 Nathaniel Whit-
ney, Jr. of Weston purchased lot 77 in Turkey Hills (later
Lunenburg) for four pounds, five shillings.[8/16, 20, 23]
It is not clear whether he ever settled there, but at some
point later, Richard Estey was in possession of the house
lot.[8/56] Nathaniel resided in Westborough early in the
1720's. Possibly his marriage to Mary Child is what took
him to Westborough rather than Lunenburg. Many of Mary's
family moved to Westborough about this time. Nathaniel and
Mary settled in Westborough where they were admitted to the
church Jan. 21, 1728. He owned the covenant at Concord Oct.
15, 1727.[9] Nathaniel and his family lived about a mile
southwest of the current center of Westborough on what is
now called Eli Whitney Street. He had an apple orchard that
was probably on the site of a present day orchard that is
very old looking and in sad shape. Nathaniel was a good
neighbor and respected citizen. He often helped the town's
minister. This he did by cutting fire wood for him each
year and did much of the carpentry work when the minister
put up a new house. He was always being chosen as a dele-
gate for different committees and affairs and was even cho-
sen as a deacon of the church in 1755 but declined.
Nathaniel's wife Mary had a habit, as did some others at the
time, of crying out in public - even in church meetings.
Research into this maladay might possibly prove it was con-
nected with some sort of spiritual beliefs at the time.
Nathaniel died on the evening of January 27, 1776 while the
town's minister was with him. Reverend Parkman's diary en-
try of January 30 states, " ... to ye Funeral of Mr.
Nathaniel Whitney, who expired when within about seven Days
of Eighty years of Age".[6] On the morning of Dec. 3, 1776
"old Mrs. Whitney died" while in her 77th year. She was
buried on Dec. 5th. Her devotion to the church may be some-
what suspect as Parkman wrote in his diary that there was
reason to hope she died in glory to the riches of Christ's
grace.[6] REF: [1] Middlesex County Probate (First Series

Hello All

Margaret (Whitney) Carey; I don't believe your Job is listed in the Pierce book, I've listed below the few Job entries that he has: Job Whitney b 10/22/1729, d unm 6/13 1761 Job Whitney b 6/25/1755 Job Whitney b 9/29/1788, d 9/10/1854 res North Woodstock, CT Job Orton Whitney b 1/25/1821, d 9/25/1838 @ North Woodstock, CT

Mike Peacock and Jeanne Muse;

According to Pierce the Warrens and the Forbush and the Nathaniel + Mary Child families were very close and had numerous marriages between the families, I'll hope this is clear, here goes,

Nathaniel + Mary Child Ephraim + Thankful Harrington Beulah + Samuel Forbush Levi Forbush+ Mary Warren

Nathaniel + Mary Child Oliver + Dorcas Warren

Nathaniel + Mary Child Anna + David Forbush "David Forbush was the son of Deacon Thomas Forbush, Jr. of the earliest and most prominent citizens of Westboro, Mass. His grandfather, Daniel Forbush, or Forbes, a native of Scotland, probably of the parrish of Kinellar, was undoubtely taken prisoner by Cromwell at the battle of Dunbar, and deported with others to this country. He located in Cambridge, Mass., and finally settled in Marlboro, where he died. (See Forbes-Forbush Genealogy by F.C. Pierce also history of Grafton. Mass by F.C. Pierce.) David was a member of the alarm company, commanded by Capt. Samuel Warren..." Anna Forbush + John Warren Anna's sister Jemima Forbush was the great grandmother of F.C. Pierce

As you can see Pierce was connected to the Forbush family and he published a genealogy of the Forbus family, it would be interesting to see if his book would shed some light on this mystery.

I'm bleary eyed from researching and I think I'll end now., I've got a few more letters to answer next time.

Keep in touch

Jon Aston

ps - Jeanne, I just received your mail this morning, I'll review and reply tonight, this is a good way to perhaps resolve this problem.

Subject: William Whitney & Martha Pierce descendants

GenServ has again provided me with more information! For those of you who are researching the WILLIAM WHITNEY (1683) & MARTHA PIERCE (1681) line, this may be of interest. Here is a descendancy tree submitted to GenServ on a Gedcom file by Gilbert Payson of Germany (his addresses are at the bottom).

Get in touch if you need further info on the specifics of the families, which may show source notes. Notice that some of his dates on John & Elinor & John & Ruth Reynolds conflict with ours. :-) Jeanne

Howdy again!

My earlier research (LDS film) from Rev. Abner Morse's "History and Genealogy of the Towns of Sherborn and Holliston, Massachusetts" Boston, 1856. I guess I was unable to connect these people early on -- but now our expanded database has given me a place for these folks. (Any help on confirmation of names, etc. would be helpful.)

This line goes: John & Elinor-->Jonathan & Lydia Jones-->John & Mary Hapgood-->James & Martha Rice. We had SOME of James & Martha's children, but here are more descendants.

Re: My Search for Whitneys

Hello again everyone.

Has anyone researched the THOMAS WHITNEY & PATIENCE MORTON line? A Thomas Whitney supposedly lived in Plymouth, Mass, in 1634 & married a WINIFRED ____?(she died at age 22 on 23 Jul 1660). I was wondering if Thomas could have married Patience Morton as his 2nd wife. I haven't had a chance to check for films about them. Also would like to know if there are any LONG ISLAND Whitneys. I saw a reference to a STEPHEN WHITNEY, who was supposedly one of the first settlers of Huntington, Long Island.

In my search for my Whitney ancestors, I have made a list of films that I have reviewed (or plan to review) through the Latter Day Saints library. For all of you out there still struggling, here is a list of the films that contain misc. Whitney data.

Film No. Description 103353 Fred F. Whitney Genealogy (1553-1977) 1035968 Whitney Pedigree charts (1714-1919) many old records back to Kings of England 0378686 thru Descendants of Capt. George Barbour - 8 Volumes; 0378693 is Index (Vol 8)

 0378693 Has lots of Whitneys

0233824 Item 1 Descendants of Sir Robert de Whitney 0238338 Item 3 Whitney Family from Massachusetts (only 4 pages long) 1033936 Whitney Family of Connecticut; Descendants of Henry Whitney (1649-1878) 0940944 Item 3 Genealogies of Families & Descendants of Early Settlers of Watertown, Mass., by Henry Bond 0924023 Item 1 Descendants of John Whitney, Frederick Clifton Pierce 1697887 Josiah Whitney Genealogy b.1688 Groton, Mass; d. 1766 ??????? Jotham Whitney Genealogy b.22 Aug 1797 Hadley,Mass; d.17 Jun 1872 Monkton, Vermont

The last 2 are on my library "to do" list for ordering on my next trip. Has anybody looked at those? I saw the reference to the "Jotham" Whitney genealogy, but evidently failed to write down the number. Happy Hunting all! :-) Jeanne

Hello "cousins"! Our newest member, Vickie (Elam) White ([email protected]), has a good amount of research material available for us. But...read her message to me below. She is researching a minimum of 20 different New England lines & is constantly helping other genealogists. So have patience. Feel free to e-mail her any questions you might have, as she is willing to help as time permits.

We welcome you Vickie! Notice the "distribution" list. If you ever wish to post a message for the entire group, you'll probably find it helpful to add them all to your address book & then make a Whitney group (or 2). CompuServe has a limit of 50 "recipients" per message, so I've split mine into 2 groups. Then I send the same message twice. For this particular message, I'll make sure you get a copy which shows all of the addresses.

-) Jeanne

>>My line as I believe it to be is as follows:

Alice/Eleanor WHITNEY married Nathaniel WOODS Joshua WHITNEY married Abigail TARBELL John WHITNEY and Eleanor ____

Is this a mailing list, then? Do I post my queries onto a list which all 70 members see, or send them to you and you pass them on, or just post on Compuserve? Remember, I'm new to computers. Been a genealogist for over 8 years, but using the "old-fashioned" methods! <G>

Yes, feel free to pass on what I have in my library. Just warn people that I have a huge backlog. If their question is something that doesn't require too much research, I can do it quickly. But if it is actual research they want, then it may take time.

I noticed that you mentioned I own a copy of Torrey. I also own other reference works:

Savage's Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England (4 volume set) Pope's Pioneers of Masssachusetts Bailey's Early Massachusetts Marriages 1st Supplement to Torrey's New England Marriages... Vital records for Chelmsford, Dunstable, Groton, Lancaster, Townsend, Dracut, Billerica (births only), Westford (births only) Fox's History of Dunstable Stearn's 30 Dunstable Families selected Dunstable cemetery inscriptions The Richardson Memorial The Farwell Family The Woods Family of Groton The Powers Family The Wyman Family History of Stoddard NH Many various genealogies, some only the first 4 or 5 generations copied (Shedd family, Cummings family, Spaulding family, French family, Butterfield family etc.)

Well, take care. Hope to hear from you soon.
