Re: Part 1 - Whitney Newsletter 10-5-96

My news for the week:

Belated adding of a new member. Guess it goes to prove that even e-mail can get lost! Welcome Donald Watson <[email protected]> who sent the following to Michael Whitney recently:

>>Hi Micheal, I can handle GEDCOM for PAF or FTW sent as an attached file. My WHITNEY line is from John WHITNEY and Ellinor, Benjamin and wife Jane POOR, Nathaniel and wife Sarah FORD, Nathan and wife Elizabeth MELCHER(need her parents). Elizabeth Ann WHITNEY married Ebenezer WATSON and were my G4grandparents. H&H, Donald Watson JR [email protected]<<

Donald: I know we would love to have your complete line for our database. If you haven't done so already, get in touch with Jon Aston who maintains the "master" database <MRJ79@aolcom>, & arrange for him to receive your Gedcom file. Jon will also be able to send you the most recent copy of the association's master database.

Everybody say a little prayer for Joan Hicks. She advises me that she just had surgery for cancer of the throat & is going through radiation treatments now. Get well soon, Joan! We're all pulling for you!

Here are some interesting notes that I received this week from Ron & Roxie Whitney: >> Just a short note to share some info I found. I have a letter dated January 22, 1945 from a Mabel May Whitney in Harvey, Illinois to my Grandfather's sister Frances. She was seeking information about her father who was also an Oliver Whitney. In the letter she said her greatgrandfather was named John. Her grandfather was Norman J. Whitney and had brothers named William, Irving, Oliver and Caleb. There were also sisters, but she didn't name them. She figured her father was buried somewhere in Minnesota. She also said her grandfather had an outfit and made trips to California with a couple of his brothers after gold was discovered there.

If this rings any bells for anyone, they can let me know and I will be happy to send them a copy of the letter. Ron<<

Steve Kraus passed this on to me for the membership:

>>As a newbie to the club, I really don't know where you guys have been and what's already been discussed. If I'm repeating old news, just tell me to shut up and get back on the porch (local redneck joke). I thought this might be of interest to someone.

I ran across an ad for a genealogy mail order store in a 25 year old magazine at our library a while back. Not to be discouraged, I called them up and asked for their advertised $2.00 catalog. They are still in business and are called Tuttle Antiquarian Books, Inc. in Rutland, VT. They specialize in original and bound photocopies of published geneologies and local history books (including some from Canada and Europe) ranging from $7.50 to about $300. The genealogy catalog is now $7.50 and is 275 pages. It gives description of books, condition if original, and if it includes fold out trees, etc.

Of interest in catalog no. 15...

WHITNEY, Decendants of John, who came from England to Watertown, MA in 1635, Frederick C. Pierce, 692 pp, 1895, photocopy with vinyl covers. $138.50 (I know everyone will want 2 at that price <g>)

WHITNEY, Incidents in the Life of Samuel Whitney, born in Marlborough, MA 1734, died at Castine, ME 1800, by Henry A. Whitney, 139 pp, photocopy with vinyl covers $27.50. Only 100 copies were originally published.

I haven't ordered anything from them yet but the person answering the phone was friendly and competent. The catalog was shipped promptly. It says they also buy books too if you want to sell some. They can be contacted at [email protected] or (802) 773-8229.

Mary Ann Lindsey sends the following on about some Whitneys: >>There was an inquiry about a Josiah Whitney b 1688 in MASS, d 1766. I have a Josiah Whitney b abt 1700 CT, d abt 1750 CT m Eunice Hanford. For what it is worth to anyone.

Also I found on Chris Rumbaugh's homepage while I was looking for my Emma Rumbaugh-- Charles W. Whitney m Sarah A Mitchell on Feb 9, 1868 Shelby Co Missouri. For what that is worth to anyone! I cannot find it in my files on CT Whitneys. As for Anna Whitney Percival sounds like she might be one of my VT Whitneys, but cannot find her. I need to do an in-depth analysis of my files again.

I would volunteer to maintain the listserver, but I really do not have the energy of some of you other dudes! I have my own homepage you know.

Hello again cousins!

There has been some recent discussion concerning the surname of Elinor/Ellen - wife of immigrant, John Whitney. Our database has her birthdate as 1597/1599 & that she died "aged 60" on 11 May 1659 in Watertown, Mass.

It has been suggested that her name may have been Elinor ARNOLD. Her son, John Whitney, had a land transaction in Watertown with a "Father Arnold".

The NEHG Register gives us a possibility. The writings in Vol 33 of the Registry (dated Oct 1879) beginning on p427, were prepared by 2 different people: Edwin Hubbard, Esq., of Chicago, Ill, who personally examined a copy of "early Arnold records, received from Canada by the Hon. Isaac N. Arnold, president of the Chicago Historical Society" in May, 1878. and Henry T. Drowne, Esq., of New York City, who printed the "copy of the early portion of a manuscript genealogy compiled by the late Horatio G. Somerby, in 1870, for Benjamin G. Arnold, Esq., of New ork city." Mr. Drowne wrote "The reader will notice discrepancies between the documents as to dates, names, &c. We hope that further research will decide which is correct."

Vol 33 beginning on p.427 under "Early Records of the Arnold Family" gives an account of the 2 brothers both of whom came to America...William Arnold & Thomas Arnold -- who had a sister named ELEANOR ARNOLD. These brothers were the children of: THOMAS ARNOLD, son of Richard Arnold of Somersetshire and Bagbere, England. William was the son of Thomas Arnold & his 1st wife Alice Gulley. Thomas was the son of Thomas Arnold & his 2nd wife - name not given.

This is what was written about Richard Arnold, grandfather of the immigrant brothers to America: RICHARD ARNOLD, eldest son and heir of Richard Arnold, of Somersetshire, removed into Dorsetshire, and became seated at Bagbere, in the parish of Middleton, otherwise Milton Abbas. He was Lord of the manor of Bagbere, and also possessed states in Alton Pancras, Buckland Newton, Cheselbourne, Melcombe Horsey, and other places in that county. He was also patron of the churches of Blandford and of Bingham Melcombe. His name appears in the Subsidy Rolls of the county of Dorset, as being assessed to the King's subsidies in 1549. He is also mentioned in the inquisition held in 1607, after the death of his son Richard, respecting the tenure of the estates. His manor house at Bagbere was standing until a few years later [1807], when it was demolished, and a smaller building, occupied as a farm house, erected upon its site. A small portion of the ancient building incorporated in the walls of the modern dwelling, is the only vestige of the original building. Mr. Arnold made his last will and testament on the 15th of May, 1593, which was proved July 9, 1595. He desires "to be buried in the Parishe Churche of Milton in the Ile called Jesus Ile as we goe to the Tower." The church of Milton was restored a few years since, and many of the ancient memorials removed. The early parish registers have also been lost, and the oldest now in possession of the Vicar dating from 1650. Mr. Arnold was twice married. By his first wife he had, besides a daughter Repentance, who became the wife of her cousin William Arnold ***** four sons, namely: 1. Richard Arnold of Alton Pancras. +2. Thomas 3. Robert, of Armswell 4. John, the elder by first wife, [etc.] ***** <footnote reads: Ten pages genealogy omitted. The omissions were not in the direct line.--H.T.D.>

Here is what was written about the immigrant brothers' father: THOMAS ARNOLD, the second son of Richard Arnold of Bagbere, is mentioned in the will of his father. He resided some time at Melcombe Horsey, as appears from the Subsidy Rolls of the year 1598, from which place he removed to Cheselbourne, and seated himself on an estate previously belonging to his father. The earliest parish registers now extant of Cheselbourne date only from 1644, and those of Melcombe Horsey from 1690. Fortunately, however, this branch of the family possessed a private record of the baptisms of their children, which was preserved and brought to America. Mr. Arnold was twice married. His first wife was ALICE, daughter of John GULLEY, of North Over, in the parish of Tolpuddle, a short distance from Cheselbourne.

By his first wife (Alice Gulley), 6 children are then listed, including the WILLIAM ARNOLD, who immigrated to America. This William Arnold was the ancestor of BENEDICT ARNOLD. William was born June 24, 1587. "He resided in Cheselbourne, where on 23d of November, 1616, he was appointed administrator to the estate of brother John, also of Cheselbourne, and guardian to his children during their minority. In the year 1635, Mr. <William> Arnold, with his family, left Dorsetshire and came to New England. <footnote: "William Arnold set sail with his family from Dartmouth, old England, May 1, 1635, and arrived on the 24th of the following month in New England. He removed with his family on the 20th of April, 1636, to Providence."> William settled in Providence, Rhode Island, and was one of the proprietors of the first settlement. He had six children.

THOMAS ARNOLD by his second wife had one son and two daughters, namely: 7. Elizabeth, b. in 1596; m. Feb. 1617, to John Sayles, Jr. +8. Thomas, bapt. April 18, 1599 9. Eleanor, bapt. July 31, 1606 <***Could this be our Elinor ?>

William Arnold, born June 14, 1587, wrote: "A Register, or true account of my owne agge, with my Mother, my Wife, my Brothers and Sisters, and Others of my frinds and acquantance." And listed there is this entry: "9. Elenor Arnold, my Sister was Baptized the 31 of July, 1603."

<notice the difference in the year of baptism in the 2 records>

THOMAS ARNOLD (half brother of William, and full brother of Eleanor), son of Thomas Arnold and his 2nd wife, "was baptized April 18, 1599; married his first wife in England. His second wife was Phebe Parkhurst, daughter of George Parkhurst, of Watertown, Mass." "settled in Watertown, Mass., as early as 1640, and on the 13th of May of that year, was admitted freeman of the colony. He is supposed by Savage (Gen. Dict. 1.66), Locke (ante, v.250), and Bond (Wat. 1,9), to have been the Thomas Arnold, aged 30, who embarked May 15, 1635, in the Plain Joan for Virginia; but if so his age is not correctly given. His first wife's name is not known. He married, probably about 1640, Phebe, daughter of George Parkhurst, of Watertown. In 1654 and 1655 he was fined for not attending public worship. He afterwards removed to Providence, and was admitted freeman of the Rhode Island colony, May 18, 1658. He was deputy in 1670. He died March 24, 1674-5." 3 children are listed from his 1st wife; 5 children are listed from his 2nd wife (Phebe Parkhurst).

CONCLUSION: Further research into the Arnold family is necessary to determine more about Elenor/Eleanor Arnold who was baptized 31 July 1603/1606 in England. Her father, Thomas Arnold, married 1st Alice Gulley, dau. of John Gulley, of North Over, England, and 2nd to ?? (who was Elenor/Eleanor's mother).

In reviewing the writings in the NEHG Register alone, it would appear that the will of Eleanor Arnold's father, Thomas, cannot be found. The same seems to be true of old parish records in England where he and his father resided.

However, since he was the half-brother of William, the ancestor of Benedict Arnold, other researchers may have had more luck in uncovering information about the Arnold family...especially in Rhode Island.

Questions: 1) Eleanor Whitney died May 11, 1659. Is it possible that this year could be 1658? Thomas Arnold moved to Providence on May 18, 1658, according to the above info. If Eleanor Whitney & Thomas Arnold were brother & sister, she could have been his only family left in Watertown -- thus upon her death & burial he decided to move to Providence, Rhode Island, where his brother William resided, having moved there in 1636 & had become well established and a very prominent citizen.

2) Is there any reference to Thomas Arnold in Eleanor Whitney's will? or to any of Thomas' children?

Thomas' children still living in 1658/1659 would have been: (by 1st wife) Susannah, m. at Boston, April 7, 1654 John Farnum; (by 2nd wife Phebe): Ichabod Arnold, b. Watertown March 1, 1640-1 Richard Arnold, b. Watertown March 22, 1642-3 Elizabeth Arnold, b. 1645; d. 1745, m. Samuel Comstock John Arnold, b. Watertown Feb. 19, 1647-8; d. Providence June 5, 1722 Eleazer Arnold, b. Watertown June 17, 1651; d. Providence Aug. 29, 1722.

Of the children above, it would appear the only one who may have stayed in Massachusetts might be Susannah, since she married before her father's migration to Rhode Island. If she was mentioned in Eleanor's will, her name would probably have been listed as Susannah Farnum & the reference would be as neice.

3) Who was the "Father Arnold" who had a land transaction with Eleanor Whitney's son, John Whitney? Was the date of the transaction concurrent with the above 1658/1659 date of Thomas Arnold's move to Providence?

Any ideas, anybody? :-) Jeanne

Hi Guys,

Just a quick note from me your humble listowner(God help us all). The reason

you may be subscribed to the list without sending in your subscribe message is because I found out my orginal message didn't get to a large number of people. So I just added everyone currently on the e-mail list last night. So you can now take that list of 80 address' out of your address book and replace them with [email protected] and it will go to us all. One quick item of business. Every time any mail bounces or any errors happen with the mail on this list I will get an error message from MAISER. I will not worry about one error from your address but after 2 or 3 of them I will bounce that person from the list for my sanity. So if your service provider goes down for a week check with me to see if I need to resubscribe you. Well good luck and enjoy and remember I'm learning how to do this as I go along so keep a sense of humor.

From - Sun Oct 20 06:47:08 1996 Date: Fri, 11 Oct 96 12:06:25 EDT From: [email protected] (Robert Ward) To: <img src="/robertward.gif"> Subject: Reed Article on Whitney Origins

Reed, Paul C., "Whitney Origins Revisited: John-1 Whitney of Watertown, Massachusetts, and Henry-1 Whitney of Long Island and Norwalk, Connecticut," _The_American_Genealogist,_ vol. 69, No. 1 (Jan 1994), pp. 9-14.

It has been claimed that John-1 Whitney, of Watertown, Massachusetts, is of illustrious and royal descent. The strongest argument for such a connection ws put forth by Henry Melville in his _Ancestry_of_John_Whitney_..._ ([New York, 1896], hereafter _Whitney_Anc._). Melville cited pedigrees found in the Harleian manuscripts, now at the British Library, London (MSS 1442, fols. 66, 67), that had been drawn up on behalf of John Whitney, apparently a cousin of the New England immigrant. This John claimed to be the male heir of the Whitney family of Whitney, Herefordshire, and stated that his grand- father, Thomas Whitney, gentleman, of Westminster, was a son of Robert Whitney, a younger son of Sir Robert Whitney by Sibel Baskerville--and thus the royal descent. Melville also supplemented his genealogy with many transcriptions of wills, chancery records, inquisitions _post_mortem_, and other primary sources, making his work appear to be highly trustworthy.

Donald Lines Jacobus challenged this line in an article published in 1933 (_TAG_ 10[1933-34]:84-88). Jacobus tentatively accepted the conclusion that John-1 Whitney of Watertown, Massachusetts, was a son of Thomas Whitney of Westminster, but he argued that the latter was not the son of Sir Robert. Jacobus concluded that the pedigree was either incorrect or fraudulent, and that chronology made such a connection implausible (_TAG_ 10[1933-34]:87). The burden of proof was therefore unmet.

Some descendants still cling to the hope that the immigrant descends from royalty, however, and the connection is still appearing in new publications. It is argued that, though Sir James Whitney died on 31 May 1587, aged forty- two, his younger brother, Robert (supposed father of Thomas Whitney of Westminster), could have been born about 1548-9 (given ten- to fifteen-month birth intervals). His alleged son, Thomas Whitney of Westminster, married Mary Bray on 12 May 1583. Assuming that both Robert and Thomas were about seventeen when they married, the connection sitll seemed chronologically possible, even if unlikely.

It should be pointed out that, although John Whitney made such a claim, it was unsubstantiated and not accepted by the College of Arms. We can now show that the claim is not only unlikely, it is certainly false. The allegation for the marriage license of Thomas Whitney and Mary Bray is recorded in the first act book of the Dean and Chapter of Westminster (fol. 94, Family History Library [FHL], Salt Lake City, film #94,507: Joseph Lemuel Chester and Geo. J. Armytage, eds., _Allegations_for_Marriage_Licenses_Issued_by_the_ _Dean_and_Chapter_ of_Westminster,_1558_to_1699_..._, Harleian Soc. Pubs., 23[London, 1886]:8). Though it did not specifically state the ages of the groom and bride, it must be concluded that Thomas Whitney was at least twenty-one on 10 May 1583, the date of the record, because no mention of consent is made. This would push his birth date back to at least 1562, probably earlier (a point not made by Jacobus). James Whitney, Thomas's alleged uncle, was found to be aged twenty-three at the inquisition _post_ _mortem_ of his father, taken 18 September 1567, and aged forty-three at the time of his own death on 31 May 1587. He was therefore born about 1544. The Robert Whitney who was younger brother of Sir James and Eustace would therefore be born no earlier than the beginning of 1546, and more probably 1548 or later. Robert Whitney would not have fathered a son at age thirteen!

That Robert was definitely third, not second son is proved by the entail of land made in Sir James Whitney's will (Prerogative Court of Canterbury [PCC] 38 Spencer), which agrees with _Llfyr_Baglan_, a collection of pedigrees compiled by the Welsh scholar, John Williams, between 1600 and 1607 [Note 1]. The administration of Sir Robert Whitney, their father, was granted to his relict, Dame Mary, and son James Whitney on 5 February 1567/8 (PCC Admons. Act Book, 1559-1571, fol. 128). At James's death, and administration _de_ _bonis_non_ was granted to Robert's son, Eustace Whitney, on 1 February 1588/9. Sir Eustace Whitney died in 1608, heir of his elder brother James. Eustace's four granddaughters eventually became coheirs of the estate.

Thomas Whitney of Westminster had a son Robert, whose son John claimed to be male heir in 1676, about the time that the Hereford estate was settled among the female coheirs. It is most likely that the claimant was trying to obtain some sort of inheritance to make his life less burdensome. The wills of both the claimant's parents were proved in the Archdeaconry of London. Their residence was the parish of St. Peter Cornhill, London, where Robert Whitney, merchant taylor, was buried on 3 Apr 1662. Robert Whitney's original will was dated 19 January 1661/2 and proved 16 April 1662 (FHL Film #94,280). He was of a very low estate, though a citizen and merchant tailor. He gave his loving children John and Mary Whitney 5s. each. He also gave John the great ring he had had from his father. His daughter, Mary, was to receive the lesser ring he usually wore. Robert gave his wife Mary the lease of the house they lived in for the remainder of the term during her widowhood. Mary was made sole executrix. Though the will was sealed with a small seal which appeared to be in good condition it could not be made out on the microfilm copy.

The original will of Mary Whitney was dated 23 October 1667 and proved 11 February 1667/8 (FHL Film #588,057). She left her son, John Whitney, and his wife, Elizabeth, 5s. each, to be paid within a year and a day after her decease. She gave her loving grandchild, Jane Whitney, one silver gilt spoon. She also mentioned her cousin Mary West, daughter to Edward West, to whom she left 12s. The residue was left to her daughter Maryfrances [sic] Whitney, whom she made sole executrix. Lastly, she gave 12d. to her friend Anne Stockinhall, who was to be overseer. In the following records, Mary was stated to be relict of Robert Whitney, of St. Peter Cornhill, London, deceased. William Parker, parson of St. Peter Cornhill, was assigned to administer the estate on 13 February 1667/8 during the minority of the executrix, Mary Frances Whitney. Neither will made any reference to a connection with the Whitneys of Whitney, county Hereford.

If John Whitney, the claimant, were male heir of the Whitneys of Whitney, it would seem inconceivable that the female heirs would have allowed him to fall into such relative poverty. Some legacy or settlement would have been given to him if he had any proof for his claim.

As it is clear that the parentage of Thomas Whitney of Westminster is unknown (though examined by Horatio Gates Somerby in 1871), we present a clue to the actual origin of the family in the marriage entry of Robert Whitney, son of Thomas of Westminster. He married Mary Towers at Stepney, county Middlesex, on 18 January 1635/6 (original register on FHL film #579,245; Thomas Colyer- Fergusson, _The_Marriage_Registers_of_St._Dunstan's,_Stepney,_in_the_County_ _of_Middlesex_, 3 vols. [Canterbury, 1898-1901], 1:239: "Robert Whitney of Westminster merchantailor & Mary Towers of Tarvin [the printed transcript says "Tarring," but is in error] in the Coun[ty] of Chester maid maried by licensece from the Office of Facult[ie]." [There is a gap in the marriage allegations of the Faculty Office during this period.]

The pedigree made by John Whitney, the 1676 claimant, states that his mother was a daughter of John Towers, of Chester or Shropshire (_Whitney_Anc._, 272-73). It seems likely that Robert Whitney, Thomas's father, had close connections in Cheshire. Only one prominent Whitney family was situated in Cheshire, seated at Coole Pilate in the parish of Acton. Howell Whitney held land there in 12 and 17 Richard II [1388-1394] (George Ormerod, _The_History_ _of_..._Chester_..._, 2d ed., 3 vols. [London, 1882], hereafter Ormerod, 3:389) and in 1404. The male representative of the family when Thomas was at Westminster was a Robert Whitney, gentleman, of Coole (married 1574/5), who is found in 1593, 1600, 1614, and died 24 January 1615/6 at Coole, leaving his grandson Hugh (son of Hugh), his heir (born January 1601) (R. Stewart- Browne, ed., _Cheshire_Inquisitions_..._, Record Society of Lancashire and Cheshire, 91[n.p., 1938]:169-71).

The fullest purported account of the Cheshire Whitney family is found in S. Whitney Phoenix's _The_Whitney_Family_of_Connecticut_..._ (3 vols. [New York, 1878]). It traces the ancestry of Henry-1 Whitney of Long Island and Norwalk, Connecticut, from the ancient family by way of counties Hertford, Essex, and Chester. Such a connection would have provided a better royal descent than the main branch of the Whitneys had. Unfortunately, the work is based on many false and dubious sources. A careful examination found that nine key documents used to prove connections do not exist. Had they been real, their discoveries would have presented one of the most brilliant compilations in the field.

The purported English ancestry was the work of Harriet A. Bainbridge DeSalis; and after he had published the book, S. Whitney Phoenix became suspicious. He commissioned the distinguished Anglo-American genealogist, Joseph Lemuel Chester, to examine the accuracy of Mrs. DeSalis's work. Chester quickly noted the fraud.

[MORE DETAILS ABOUT THE FRAUDULENT DOCUMENTS PURPORTING TO PROVE THE ANCESTRY OF HENRY-1 WHITNEY OMITTED]

Actual sources for the early Cheshire family are meager and scant, and provide no hint or illustrious royal descent such as the Parry and Vaughan matches would have provided. It is most likely that Thomas Whitney of Westminster descends from the Cheshire Whitneys at Coole Pilate, in Acton, near Nantwich. A Thomas Whitney, found in 1505, 1510, and 1517, and earlier in the reign of Henry VII (1485-1509), married Anne Brooke, daughter of John Brooke, of Leighton, Cheshire, and Jane Meverell, of Throwlegh, county Stafford (Ormerod, 3:454). It would be through this connection that the only possible royal descent for this family might present itself. That the family spread beyond Cheshire is clear from the will of Geoffrey Whitney, son of an earlier Geoffrey. Born at Coole Pilate about 1548, he attended both Oxford and Cambridge, was under-bailiff of Great Yarmouth, county Norfolk, 1580-86, and admitted to the university at Leyden 1 March 1586 (Joseph Foster, _Alumni_Oxoniensis_..._1500-1714_, 4 vols. [London, 1887-92], 4:1623]; John and J. A. Venn, _Alumni_Cantbrigiensis_, Pt. 1, 4 vols. [Cambridge, 1922-27], 4:396]; and _Dictionary_of_National_Biography_). His will, dated 11 September 1600 and proved 28 May 1601 (PCC 33 Woodhall), mentioned many relatives, including his brother, Brooke Whitney, of Oxford and Berkshire (PCC 100 Byrde) [probably a great-grandson of the Whitney-Brooke alliance], Geoffrey Whitney, of Draiton, Shropshire (citizen and merchant tailor of London, PCC 15 Bolein), and Walter Whitney, citizen and plasterer of London (Commissary Court of London, Orig. Will, 1608), but no possible reference to Thomas of Westminster was noted.

[MORE ABOUT HENRY-1 WHITNEY OMITTED --RLW]

... Cheshire, Hereford, Lichfield, Gloucester, Norfolk, Essex, and Suffolk wills have been exhausted. Other records are still being searched, but the parentage of Thomas Whitney, gentleman, of Westminster, still remains to be found.

Moses (b.1767) and Guilford (b.1769) were sons of Samuel and Phebe Harrington Whitney and brothers of my g-g-g-g grandfather Simci Whitney of Marboro, VT.

You'll find information about Moses and Guilford on pages 135 and 256 in Whit

ney: The Descendants of John Whitney . . . by Frederick Clifton Pierce, 1895. Moses' identification number in this book is 1842; Guilford's is 1844; and Samuel's is 753. The Pierce book is indexed, so you likely could trace others on your list. Good luck.

Dear Jerry:

Well I found something for you. The Moses Whitney who married your Bernice Locke on 5 Apr 1789 was the son of "Capt." Samuel Whitney of Shrewsbury, Worcester Co., MA and his wife Phoebe Harrington Whitney. I have their ancestry and all(?) the other children of that marriage. Your Moses was the second Moses, his older brother of the same name died in infancy. I would be interested in any family and descendants, as Moses was all I had, but his birthdate was exactly the same. You should probably also send the connection/descent to Jon Aston for inclusion in his latest collective GED.

AND, Guilford Whitney was Moses younger brother, so all of the above applies to him as well. I have also found a Lydia Whitney, born 6 Jul 1795, d. of Josiah and Anna Scollay Whitney, who could be the one married in 1813.

That's all I had in my own database. I assume you tried the one Jon sent out last summer as Witney10.GED, which was the collective of the descendants of John and Elinor as best it was known at that time.

Happy Hunting:-) Allan

Hi Jon (and Jerry & Mike Poston):

Thanks for all the data on the lines that Jerry has brought to our attention - I'm interested in the descendants as well. Would I be correct in assuming that you will be including them in <Witney11.GED>, along with all the supporting information about dates and places?? If so, I won't take the time to put in just the names and have to go through that much more Match/Merge later.

I wrote tonight to Michael (WhitneyMR), asking about how we are going to transfer files, GEDCOMs, text attachments, etc., as Karen's effort tonight obviously didn't work. Many lists do not allow for attachments, and I don't know how we will be handling it. Maybe you, Joan, Jeanne and I will have to keep an up-to-date list after all, so as to be able to send GEDCOMs, etc., to all. Then each can choose to accept or delete them, depending on which set of files they want to work with.

Mike, are you on <northeast-roots>? I wrote to the Cumberland County, ME co-ordinator for the GenWeb project, asking about how to get to information in the Vital Records of North Yarmouth, looking for Jabez Whitney. I got back a note suggesting that I try NE-Roots. I also E-mailed several people on the Franklin Co. GenWeb Query page that had postings about the Wheeler family, asking if they had any further information about Abigail's husband, and realized later that I had reinvented the circular question by asking you for information in order to answer your question. I did discover that her father was John Wheeler, a famous sailor with John Paul Jones.

Just curious about the above. Are either or both of Jerry and Jon using AOL 3.0? If so, did the <northeast-roots> above come out red on a cream background?? I just started to try to use this version, and had never

  • colored* anything in a message before. I guess it only works within AOL.
One thing I don't like (yet) is the fact that when I click on the file

cabinet above, I don't get the choice of dumping a message into my family subdirectories of my word processor program. In order to do that, I have to learn to use the *Save As...* under *File*.

Jon - will Witney11.GED be forthcoming in the near future? During the late summer and early fall, while I was so busy with school stuff, I got way behind in entering all the information that kept showing up in all the Whitney traffic. If you have it all coming soon in your usual excellent manner, I'll not bother trying to hunt back through all the messages (which I did print, at least) to try and get caught up.

Happy Hunting, Keep in Touch, TTYL, and all the rest of that stuff. Allan

Jon - I think that you figured what I'm up to...making the LOCKE connections with the WHITNEY lines. If you have some time, I would appreciate any of the LOCKE references you can find. In regard to descendants, those of CHARLES KELLOG WHITNEY and CHASTINA HODGE, grandchildren of SILAS WHITNEY and SARAH WITHINGTON, and the descendants of MOSES WHITNEY and OLIVE J. Thanks for the trouble to which you have gone.

Dear Mike, There are Whitneys in my line in North Yarmouth but I have not found any Jabez. You might look at Gorham, Me vital statistics as there were Whitneys settled there early. Uriel(Royal, Urial) Whitney, son of Abner(John, Moses, Richard, John) married and settled in North Yarmouth after serving in the Revolutionary War, had three sons out of 12 children, but not a Jabez. North Yarmouth covered a large area that was eventually divided into Yarmouth, Cumberland, North Yarmouth and perhaps even part went to Pownal, so try the others as well. See Pierce for Uriel' brothers -Samuel which is my line doen't have what you seek, but try the others.

Hi Guys,

Is anyone holding much info on the Whitney family in England? The reason I

ask is I've finally figured out how the southern Whitneys got there. We didn't come down from New England we came up from Bermuda! In the book Southern Colonial Families by David A. Avant Jr. he proves Loubrad and my family back to a Samuel Whitney born circa 1615 in England, will proven 1674 in Bermuda. He makes a very strong case that his father was a Capt. Francis Whitney who was in command of the ship Garland out of London going to Virginia Colony when he died from injuries suffered in a storm off of Bermuda in 1619. He was born ca. 1585 in England. (Yes Louise this is what I asked for your snail mail address for). Any chance of anyone having any hunches on where I could look for more info on these two? By the way this family's migration was Eng>Ber>VA>NC>SC>KY. So if you find any inquiries about Whitney's in those southern states make sure they get to me.

Thanks, Michael Whitney

To all interested in the WHITNEY families of New England:

There is an article in the January 1994 issue of _The American Genealogist_ (Vol. 69, No. 1), pp. 9-14, "Whitney Origins Revisited," by Paul C. Reed, debunking the alleged royal ancestries of both John WHITNEY of Watertown, MA, and Henry WHITNEY of Long Island, NY, and Norwalk, CT.

The conclusion is that neither ancestry can be supported by documents, and that the Henry WHITNEY pedigree was a deliberate forgery. John WHITNEY's ancestry cannot now be traced beyond his father, Thomas WHITNEY of Westminster, and the parentage of Henry WHITNEY is unknown.

Robert L. Ward

========================================

The strongest argument for such a connection was put forth by Henry Melville in his _Ancestry_of_John_Whitney_..._ ([New York, 1896], hereafter _Whitney_Anc._).

Assuming that both Robert and Thomas were about seventeen when they married, the connection still seemed chronologically possible, even if unlikely.

Peter Cornhill, London, where Robert Whitney, merchant tailor, was buried on 3 Apr 1662.

[Canterbury, 1898-1901], 1:239: "Robert Whitney of Westminster merchantailor & Mary Towers of Tarvin [the printed transcript says "Tarring," but is in error] in the Coun[ty] of Chester maid maried by licence from the Office of Facult[ie]." [There is a gap in the marriage allegations of the Faculty Office during this period.]

Will, 1608), but no possible reference to Thomas of Westminster was noted.

... Cheshire, Hereford, Lichfield, Gloucester, Norfolk, Essex, and Suffolk wills have been exhausted. Other records are still being searched, but the parentage of Thomas Whitney, gentleman, of Westminster, still remains to be found.

Hi guys,

I've started the address list. Right now there's only 3 of us, but I'll

update as I get more. If you want info on Allan, Karen, or me FTP to

members.aol.com:/whitneymr/private/genealogy

and it should be there. I also can take uploads at

members.aol.com:/whitneymr/private/incoming

that way when Whitney11.ged is ready it can be uploaded there for people to download. There is a discussion going on the listowners mailling list about how dead all of the other groups are right now. I was kind of proud to be able to say this list has been up for 2 weeks and has 87 people on it. Sounds like we are the envy of others because they can't get posts to there group. By the way I was "talking" to Larry @ MAISER and it turns out he accidently set us up as a restricted list. I had him leave it that way. What this means is people not subscribed to our list can't post to it. That's why after 2 weeks we've had no trash postings from people not on the list. So if someone gets hold of you about the list tell them to join if they want to post.

Thanks for making us all look good, Michael Whitney

This is for Jerry Harrison and anyone else who is interested.

<<*CHARLES KELLOG WHITNEY, b. 1828 of Westford, Mass. and CHASTINA HODGE>>

>From the Westford Vital Records -- Charles WHITNEY was born in Southborough MA on 11 Dec 1828. The vital records don't mention a middle name for him. His parents were David and Catherine WHITNEY. He had the following siblings:

Charles -- your line David b 23 Aug 1830 in Westford MA Hiram b 10 Nov 1834 in W. Harriet b 29 Jul 1836 in W. Albert b 28 Oct 1839 in W. Mary b after 1839 in W.

<<*DEBORAH WHITMAN WHITNEY, b. 1807 of Bridgewater, Mass., d. 9/14/1875 of >>Lancaster, Mass, and JOEL WILDER, m. 5/4/1828>>

According to the Lancaster Vital Records, Joel WILDER Jr.married Deborah H. WHITMAN of Lancaster, not Deborah Whitman WHITNEY. In the death record of his son George Waite WILDER, he is listed as Joel WILDER 2d. You do have the correct date of marriage. Where did you get WHITNEY as her surname?

Hope this helps somewhat.

Jonathan-4 WHITNEY (Jonathan-3, Benjamin-2, John-1) married Lydia JONES on 26 Jan 1726/7 in Mendon, MA. He was a grand-nephew of the Jonathan-2 WHITNEY who married an earlier Lydia JONES in Watertown, MA.

More details on request.

Hi Everyone

I was going to lurk awhile but now that the cat is out of the bag I will show you what I have on my gggggggrandmother Keziah Whitney. What I need to do it connect with all you other Whitney's:

JOHN JONES son of Abraham and Sarah Whitman Jones was born in Hull Mass 1669/70. He married c. 1693 Sarah Lobdell daughter of John Lobdell of Hull. They moved to Mendon, Mass soon after April 11, 1703 where he died 28 March 1753 age 84 and his wife 3 March 1750 age 82. Children: Sarah b. 20 Oct 1694 m. 1717 Daniel Corbett Bridget 8 Jul 1696 1755 Joseph Wood Mercy 3 Sep 1697 1718 John Thwing John 27 Sep 1699 1723 Abigail Holbrook

                               Elizabeth Chillson
                               Mary Rockwood

Nathaniel 31 Mar 1702 d.1784 ?Priscilla Corbett

                     1748 Elizabeth Gage

Lydia 17 Sep 1705 1726/7 Jonathan Whitney) Jonathan and Keziah Abraham 2 Jul 1708 abt 1730 Keziah Whitney ) are brother and sister & Joseph 27 Dec 1709 1732 Mary Whitey ) I suppose Mary is too

                                                    but my source did not
                                          say so.

Footnote: Jonathan Whitney was son of Jonathan & Susannah of Mendon

                                              See Family Records for Holbrook

& Whitney.

Abraham Jones married about 1730 to Keziah Whitney of Framingham, Mass born 31 Jul 1706 in Holliston, Mass daughter of Jonathan Whitney and wife Susannah. Keziah died 29 June 1791 at Milford.

That's all folks. The Denver Library has two computers hooked up to the LDS library in Salt Lake City. I search Whitney in it and did get some film saying it was about Whitneys in Ohio. So the Ohio Whitneys might consider a trip to a Family History Center.

That's all for now, Michael Whitney

Hi Michael
That was quick service. One minute I didn't know that there
was a list and the next minute I am subscribed. Thank you
very much for adding me to your list. I received the welcome
message a short time ago.
The information which you saw on Keziah is about all that I
have except that she had a brother named Jonathan who
married the sister of Abraham Jones. He name was Lydia
Jones.
It would also appear from my information that there was
a Mary Whitney who was probably a sister to Keziah and
and Jonathan and she also marred a brother to Abraham
Jones named Joseph Jones.
The information which I have came from research done
by Madelyn Jones Osgood titled "Ancestry of Solomon
Jones of Kiantone, Chautauqua County, N.Y.", on file at
the Fenton Historical Society, Jamestown, NY. She
has a footnote "see records for Holbrook & Whitney"
I will lurk a bit on the list and then see if I can get a
message sorted out to post,.
Thank you

Rec'd a short note "snail-mail" from Dr. Jack Parrish, Memphis, this morning.

He asked if I could shed any further light on his Cyrena Whitney. I think I

sent this questionaire out to our Whitney Research Group once before, but so many new members have joined lately, I thought I should submit it once again. So, here goes, once more, with feeling!

Dear Michael and Others,

Some Ohio Whitneys likely descend from Guilford Whitney (1769-1843) who moved with his family from Marlboro, VT, to Strongsville, Ohio, in 1816, and from Samuel Whitney (1772-?) who with his family joined the Mormons and went from Marlboro, VT, to Kirkland, Ohio, where Samuel and his wife are buried. This information is supplied by Pierce, pp. 256-257, along with names of their children, some spouses, and even some of their children's children.

(Guilford's identification numfer in Pierce is 1844 and Samuel's is 1846.
They were sons of Samuel Whitney and Phebe Harrington, who moved from

Massachusetts to Marlboro, VT. Their line is as follows: Guilford/Samuel<Samuel<Samuel<Nathaniel< Nathaniel<John<John & Eleanor.)

To all,

Just wanted to list my WHITNEY connections once again. Any cousins out there?

We have two lines from John WHITNEY and Elinor ____ of Watertown MA. They were the immigrant ancestors. Their son John WHITNEY (1621 - 1692) married Ruth REYNOLDS (1623 - aft 1660) in 1642. They lived in Watertown MA. Their daughter Ruth WHITNEY (1645 - aft 1686) married John SHATTUCK in 1664 as her first husband.

Also a son of John and Elinor WHITNEY was Deacon Joshua WHITNEY (1635 - 1719), who married Abigail TARBELL in 1672. They lived in Groton MA. Their daughter Alice WHITNEY (ca 1674 - 1718) married Nathaniel WOODS and lived in Groton MA.

History of Washington Co, NY", Microfilm #897, 291, pg. 107:

Aurelia Dodd [d/o Edw. Dodd & Anna Montgomery of Salem,NY) married

Augustus A. Whitney, born at Templeton, Mass.; son of William Whitney, of Templeton, and his wife Lucy Larabee, and brother of Abigail Whitney, wife of Colonel Caleb Brown, of Hartford, and mother of Harvey Brown, lately deceased at Hartford. Aurelia Dodd was the second wife of Augustus A. Whitney. His first wife was Harriet Fuller, and by her he had two children, Charles A. and Julia A. Charles A. Whitney became wonderfully successful as a great railroad builder. He married a daughter of the late Charles Morgan, and died at New Orleans in October, 1882, leaving a wife and several children. Julia A. Whitney, his sister, married Mr. Garniss, of New York City, who is dead, and she is now residing in that city. Augustus A. Whitney came to Salem from Hoosic in the Spring of 1834, and purchased the farm lately owned by Calvin Austin and also that now owned by J. Alvin Goodrich. He subsequently sold the former to Hiram Parish, who married his sister, Cyrena Whitney, and the latter to Alvin Goodrich, and before 1840, removed from the town and died about the year 1856. By his second wife, Aurelia Dodd, he had only one child, Edward Dodd Whitney, who is now a resident of Sandwich, DeKalb County, Illinois. He was born while his father resided in Salem, August 10, 1836.

<<Joshua and Abigail's duaghter Mary WHITNEY who m. Ephraim PIECE before 1696 is my ancestry line. Do you have a birth and death date for Abigail. I have her parents as Thomas and Mary ?>>

I have only estimations for Abigail TARBELL. As you probably know, she was Deacon Joshua's third wife. They were married 30 Sep 1672 in Watertown MA. She was born ca 1650 and her last child was born in 1686. But I don't know her deathdate.

Deacon Joshua's other wives were Lydia ___, whom he married by 1665. He had two children by her -- Joshua b 14 Jun 1665 and Sarah b 10 Oct 1668. Sometime between 1668 and 1772 Lydia died and Joshua married Mary ____. She died 17 Mar 1672. They had no children.

I don't have anything more than you do for Abigail TARBELL's parents, Thomas and Mary ( --) TARBELL. Thomas was b ca 1618 in England, Mary was born in 1620 in England. They were married by 1641, possibly in Watertown MA because the first known mention of Thomas was in 1644 in Watertown. They were in Groton MA in 1663. Mary died on 29 Apr 1674 in Groton MA and Thomas remarried in 1676 to Susanna ( --) LAWRENCE. Thomas died of smallpox on 11 Jun 1678 in Charlestown MA. Thomas and Mary had the following children:

Thomas b 1642 m Hannah Longley on 30 Jun 1666 in Groton MA d of smallpox during the same epidemic that killed his father Mary m Jonathan Sawtell on 3 Jul 1665 in Groton MA d Apr 1676 in Groton MA Abigail -- our common ancestor John Elizabeth b 5 Jan 1657 m James Bennett on 4 Feb 1681 d 1684 William b 26 Feb 1659

If anyone can add to this, please do! Thanks.

From: [email protected] Subject: PHEBE HARRINGTON, wife of SAMUEL WHITNEY Date: Sat, 26 Oct 1996 10:42:36 -0400

Good Saturday morning all from chilly Albuquerque! There has been reference to the children of PHEBE HARRINGTON and SAMUEL WHITNEY on the list (GUILFORD, MOSES, SIMCI, SAMUEL). Could someone help me with (1) the vital dates for both PHEBE and SAMUEL and (2) confirm or deny the following pedigree of PHEBE?

PHEBE HARRINGTON m. SAMUEL WHITNEY, 1762. She was the daughter of ISAAC HARRINGTON, b. 5/6/1709 of Marlboro, MA d. 6/1/1782 Grafton, MA, m. 2/16/1730 MIRIAM EAGER, b. abt 1713 of Marlboro, MA, d. 2/12/1801 Grafton, MA, daughter of ZERUBBABEL EAGER and HANNAH KENLY.

ISAAC HARRINGTON was the son of DANIEL HARRINGTON, b. 2/24/1683/4 Watertown, m. ELIZABETH WARREN, b. 7/8/1673 Watertown, daughter of JOHN WARREN and MYCALL JENNISON.

DANIEL HARRINGTON was the son of DANIEL HARRINGTON, b. 11/1/1657 Watertown, d. 4/19/1728, m. SARAH WHITNEY, b. 3/17/1653 Watertown, d. 6/8/1720. She was the daughter of JOHN WHITNEY and RUTH REYNOLDS.

PHEBE HARRINGTON and SAMUEL WHITNEY therefore would be (according to my PAF relationship calculator) third cousins on the WHITNEY LINE and cousins on the WARREN line as well.

I would, also, like to correspond with anyone who might know about descendants of GUILFORD and MOSES WHITNEY, sons of PHEBE and SAMUEL, beyond their grandchildren. The great grand children (and later) are of interest to me as I am completing a book on LOCKE family descendants.

Thanks in advance,

Hello to all, I am new to this group. Seeking to expand my knowledge of the few Whitney I have found in my family tree:

       Unknown Whitney married Polly Haines.
Their son, Christopher Whitney, married Dolly Brooks,
on 16 October 1831 in Stow, MA.
Their son, Albert Whitney married Maria Jane
                       Tracy, probably in MA.
                               Their daughter, Hattie Irene Whitney,
married Frederick Payson Beers in CT
                               or MA in about 1888.
                                       Their children:
                                               Alfred Whitney Beers
                                               Edith Louise Beers
                                               Florence Jane Beers

Have more details. None of the first 4 (of 6) World Family Tree disks shed any light on these people. Nor has RSL. Help! Don Bruce in Albuquerque, NM

Dear Vickie,

I am indeed a cousin. My WHITNEY connection is John and Elinor's son Richard who was born in 1626 in Isleworth, Middlesex, England. He later became a proprietor of Stowe, Massachusetts in June of 1680. He married Marth COLDAM on March 19, 1650. They had eight children born in Watern, Mass. It was the son MOSES that I descend.

What more can you tell me that particular line? Do I have any info you can use?

Thanks in advance.

Am wondering about Whitneys in VT. William Henry Whitney b. Watertown MA 1779 marries Fanny Millar of Dummerston, Windham, VT [VT is certain, the town and county have not been documented but were given me by a source that has proven reliable on everything I have been able to verify]. He and Fanny have children there as follows: Betsy (m. Noble Holton 1821) b. 1802, William M., b. 1804 m. Delilah Williams there; Mary Whitney b. 1810 and m. Charles Sherman there; Hannah Whitney b. 1812 and m. Plympton; Lydia Whitney m. Jerry Perry 1828 there; Mary Whitney (again?) who m. William Rice; Catherine, Freedom, Lucy, Henry and Charles Whitney all without dates.

Another cousin reports Benjamin Whitney ( of a line which originated in Surry, Cheshire Co, NH) and spouse Jerusha Brockway had a daughter Pernal Whitney b. 1766 in Surry who married 2 Oct 1783 in Westminster, Windham VT to Thaddeus Blakely. Walt would love to know more about his line of Benjamin and Jerusha. Walt can be emailed at [email protected] I don't know if he is in our group or not.

Thanks to anyone out there who can help either of us.

Dear Lynda and other relatively recent arrivals:

Perhaps the most effective thing that you could do when beginning with the Whitney Researchers Association (Unofficial) would be to see what has been exchanged among us over the past year. Many of us have shared GEDCOMs through the generosity of Jon Aston, one of our early members, who became the "keeper of the John and Elinor database". The last general distribution of the collective database was *Witney10*, which came out around last July. I think he is still working on #11, and hope it might be forthcoming soon.

Perhaps, on the other hand, he might like to let a few more of the recent

arrivals share their descendancy with all the rest of us, as long as their connections go back to John and Elinor. I can and gladly will send you the Witney10 gedcom file,

Further, there is also a (much smaller) database that stems from the Henry Whitney who originated (supposedly) in Berkhampstead, Hertfordshire, and who came to CT in the 1640's. This one is maintained by Joan Hicks. We believe, but cannot yet prove, that this branch can eventually tie in with the Whitney's of Hereford, perhaps through the Cheshire sub-branch, but that is a matter for future work.

Beyond that, another of our industrious and most valuable members, Jeanne Muse, has been collecting a file on all the *unconnected* Whitneys in the group, in the hopes that, as both this database and the two others grow, more and more connections can be made, within the *unconnected* group(s), and out of it to one or the other of the main databases stemming from a known immigrant.

I have taken on the responsibility of being the keeper of the

  • pre-immigration English Whitneys* database, which at the moment does not

take Henry back at all, since we cannot find any clear evidence of his lineage. That which was once originally published has been quite thoroughly debunked as fraudulent, and I spent an inordinate amount of my research time in England last summer trying (unsuccessfully) to link him in with other known portions or branches of the family. There are also some recently re-raised questions and problems with the ancestry of John Whitney's father, Thomas Whitney of Westminster, which lead me to be somewhat loath to publish the current ancestry back beyond that point (although I have and will continue to share what we have upon request, with the disclaimer that the one link is in question).

I hope that this hasn't seemed *preachey*, as that is not my intent. I simply seemed to detect an unawareness of the resources already collected in some of the recent posts, and thought I should offer the information.

Happy Hunting :-) Allan E. Green <[email protected]>

I would like any information you may have on Moses WHITNEY. I have him Born on August 10, 1655 in Concord, Massachusetts. He married Sarah KNIGHT and produced I don't know how many children, but one of them was Jonas, Sr.

Am I correct in saying he was a soldier in King Philip's War in 1676? Under what conditions was he released under? Was he a prisoner..and did he have any involvement with the indians. I have little information.

Please tell me what I need to have to accept a GEDCOM and exactly what it is..I'm a novice if that isn't apparent.

My references are:

PLANTERS OF THE COMMONWEALTH by Charles Edward Banks

GENEALOGIES OF THE FAMILIES AND DESCENDANTS OF THE EARLY SETTLERS OF WATERTOWN, MASSACHUSETTS by Henry Bond.

SOME OF THE DESCENDANTS OF JOHN AND ELINOR WHITNEY... by William Whitney

Thanks for the help in advance.

Hello group! Just returned from 10 day business trip. Turned my mail back on. Have I missed anything?

Remember that this server is a WHITNEY DISCUSSION GROUP. Let's all try & stay on the Whitney topic. All personal e-mail should be sent through our old channels.

Here are a few things that have come through my personal e-mailbox of interest.

>From FRED WHITTEN, who has been trying all along to make a WHITNEY/WHITTEN connection. As you can see, he's decided not to continue as a member. Here's a copy of his message to me:

Re: Whitney Search Program

Jeanne,

I have determined that the only connection I have to the WHITNEY name is the result of the bad spelling of the census takers.

I just returned from a trip in the Northeast, and after much diligent searching decided that it was as I had suspected all along........people misspelling our name. I came to that conclusion after searching some early. early 1800 documents, including wills and found no deviation in the spelling of WHITTEN.

For this reason, I think I should not clutter your program and I cannot tell or thank you enough for all of your kind help.

One favor, I ask is that if you ever run into the WHITTEN spelling, please give me a shout.

Happy hunting to all, and the work and research looks good to me. I can only see something good coming out of all your endeavors,

Thanks,

Fred R. Whitten, Savannah, GA

--->> I noticed there is a List Server like ours for the name WHITTEN, so I told Fred about it. There are LOTS of other names being "discussed" in Maiser! I encourage all of you to send the command SEND LIST.TXT & print out the results for future reference, like I did. Jeanne

>From ALYCE JANE MOROW

I need your help. First of all, due to being involved in working on other surnames at this time, I have no time to to work on Whitney's, so would appreciate having my name removed from the original list.

--> I've also encouraged Alyce to check out the other surnames by using the command above. J

An interesting question on SARAH WHITNEY leads to more info for our database! I received this from CompuServe's Genealogy Forum written from Dwight Beman <e-mail [email protected]>, who is not a member of our group. If more information is uncovered about any of these Sarah Whitneys, please post them for the group. I'm sure Dwight would be delighted if you could help him via regular e-mail. Here's our correspondence:

Dwight: Sorry it took me so long to respond. Have been out of town on business for 10 days.

Your message to me on October 20th read:

>>Vickie WHITE thought you might accidentally have something on a Sarah WHITNEY who did a marriage intention with Simon MAYNARD of Sudbury at Stow, MA 18 Jan 1754. We have reports that she's the dau. of Joshua and Zerviah WHITNEY, b. 26 Nov 1733, Stow _and_ that she was the "wid. MAINNER" who intended with David PIERCE (Jr.- by birth or local cirumstance?) 9 Mar 1763 at Stow and 10 Apr 1763 at Harvard, MA. Said David and wife being MY primary concern....

Too, we know of an intention of a Sarah WHITNEY and Oliver WHITCOMB of Bolton, 17 Dec 1754 at Stow. And, on top of that, of a Sarah WHITNEY that married in 1746 at Groton, MA a Benjamin WILSON.<<

There are far too many women named Sarah Whitney! At first blush, I found nothing on your SARAH WHITNEY in our master Whitney databases, my personal one nor in the Miscellaneous Whitneys I've been collecting. I have the family of JOSHUA WHITNEY and ZERVIAH (her surname unknown) -- but show only 3 children, all born in Stow, Mass. Unfortunately, I don't have Joshua & Zerviah's marriage date which would help us determine if your Sarah could be part of this family. Mary (b. 29 Nov 1743) Joshua (b. 27 Aug 1747; d. 1771, Boxboro; m. Marcy ?) Caleb (b. 23 May 1749)

I have a BENJAMIN WILSON, b. abt. 1730 (my guess), "of Townsend ..also a widower" who married Bathsheba Moore as her 3rd husband on 20 Aug 1772.

Next, I turned to my CDs from the New England Genealogical & Historical Society's Register. There is so much to go through in the CDs, I'll begin by doing running notes, which may help both of us think this through more clearly.

DAVID PIERCE. Vol. 111, p320 & 321 noted some people in Sudbury, Mass., who had been given Warnings to pay some expenses to the Town. (Reference was made to Book 6 1755-1790 of the Town Minutes of Sudbury during the period 1759-1768.) 27 Oct. 1763 David Peirce Jr. & wife Sarah 17 Nov. 1763 David Peirce Jr. & Family

There were other PEIRCE families listed in these warnings: EPHRAIM PEIRCE on 27 Oct 1763 ELSE PEIRCE on 14 May 1764 ELSIE PEIRCE 5 Nov 1764

Note: No families with the surname MAINNER or MAYNARD were listed in these town warnings.

OLIVER WHITCOMB. Not much luck in the Register, but I have on short-term loan from their library the book "John Whitcomb and Frances Coggin..350 Years Later", which I must return Monday. On pg 1316 of Vol 2:

Oliver Whitcomb, (son of Jonathan Whitcomb & Rachel Woods) b. 3 Oct 1732, Lancaster, Mass., d. prior to 23 Mar 1776, when his estate was inventoried in Boxboro, Mass.; m. intention 17 Dec 1754 SARAH WHITNEY of Stow. Their 9 children are listed beginning with Ruhamah Whitcomb (b. 7 Nov 1755) and ending with Betty Whitcomb (b. 8 Mar 1774).

Note: No parents names for Sarah Whitney were given in this book. I doubt that this is your Sarah. If she was born around 1732, like her husband Oliver, she would have been 42 when her last child, Betty, was born.

BENJAMIN WILSON. In Vol 103 p296 & 297 is listed a biography of Rev. OBED WILSON (b. 15 Oct 1778 in Norridgewock, Maine; d. 18 Nov 1840; one of eleven children of Oliver Wilson and Sarah Heywood) who "was the grandson of BENJAMIN WILSON and SARAH WHITNEY. Benjamin, born in Billerica, Mass., 18 Sep. 1715, died in Townsend, Mass., 1 Jun 1774. Sarah was born 8 Jan. 1731, died 17 May 1771, daughter of CORNELIUS WHITNEY AND SARAH SHEPPERD of Groton, Mass., descendant of the first Whitney child born in America."

Note: I think we can rule out this Sarah Whitney as yours. This is Sarah Whitney-4 (Cornelius-3, Joshua-2, John-1) -- John-1 being John Whitney, immigrant, who married Elinor/Ellen. This gives us new information for our database!

Personal observation: The Benjamin Wilson I have above as the 3rd husband of Bathsheba Moore & this Benjamin may be the same person. Sarah Whitney died in 1771 -- he didn't marry Bathsheba until 1772. Hmm - could be?

No luck, I'm afraid, with SIMON MAYNARD or DAVID PIERCE. I'll post this message to my Whitney cousins in our group to see if these ring a bell with anyone. :-) Jeanne ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ That's all for this week.

Happy Hunting! :-) Jeanne (Whitney) Muse

Greetings to the WRG:

I have the enclosed message below that may provide an opportunity for some of us to make a connection or two if we can recognize any of the people identified herein, and to help another similar group that obviously has found some Whitney connections. Notice that the writer has carefully sourced his data, I hope we can do as well with our replies. Please respond directly to him with any help you might be able to give - his address is simply

<[email protected]> If you prefer to send it back to me, I'll forward it, of

course.

Thanks for your message. I did not mean to imply that I have several Whitney/Kemp marriages. What I do have are a number of individuals who are lineal descendents of Samuel Kemp of Groton who married Whitney's, or whose mother was a Whitney. These are the Whitney's I'm looking for info on:

1) James WHITNEY m. Elizabeth KEMP, 27 Jun 1785, Pepperell, Mass. - dau. of Samuel and Elizabeth (Gilson) Kemp. (Pepperell VR's, p. 240)

2) Alonzo F. WHITNEY m. Eveline Keyes MASON, 1855, Putney, VT - dau. of Emery and Phebe H. (Keyes) Mason. (Genealogy of Robert Keyes, p. 181)

3) Artemas HOLDEN, son of Artemas and Abigail (Gage) Holden, m. Helen Luvina WHITNEY, dau. of John K. and Philura (Hibbard) Whitney, on 24 Feb 1858, St. Armand, Quebec (Holden Genealogy)

4) William KEYES, son of Uriah and Hannah (Livingstone) Keyes, m. Mercy WHITNEY of Winchendon, Mass, on 19 Mar 1799, Rindge, NH (Genealogy of Robert Keyes, p. 213)

5) Leonard WHITNEY, son of Joseph and Mary (Woods) Whitney, m. Philanda BLOOD, dau. of Lemuel and Lucy (Hale) Blood, in Acworth, NH. Leonard was of Pepperell. (History of Acworth, NH)

6) Isaac W. WHITNEY, brother of above Leonard, m. Polly BLOOD, sister of above Philanda, Acworth, NH. (History of Acworth, NH)

7) John WHITNEY, b. 20 Mar 1725, Groton, Mass, m. Elizabeth SAWTELL, dau. of David and Elizabeth (Keyes) Sawtell, on 15 Apr 1762 in Groton. (Groton Register, by Skeates)

I've got some of the Whitney line in GEDCOM from AOL, but I need verification and parentage for these Whitney's.

Any help would be appreciated.

Greetings to the WRG:

I thought I had sent this out to the list a day or so ago, but never got it back as an addressee. I sent the *REVIEW WHITNEY* command to Maiser, and got back a list that included me, so I'm not sure what has been going on with the list. Since I thought it was valuable enough to post to the whole list in the first place, I think I had better resend it. If everyone else got it already, I apologize, but you can just exercise your delete finger on this duplicate posting. The source of this data is an on-line list found on a WebSite sponsored by the Ancestry publishing company, publishers of *The Source* and other genealogical material.
