Re: Welcome New Member!
Hello everyone! I'm back from a glorious week in Grand Cayman. Have weeded through all my e-mail messages & have a new member to add to our group! Please welcome Ron Whitney who has this to say about his ancestors. Anyone with information to assist Ron, get in touch! :-) Jeanne
>>Hi,
I got your name from Mary Ann Lindsay as a possible contact for my family tree search. I don't know what the protocol is, so I will tell you what I know, or think I know about my ancestors.
Edgar (or Edwin) Whitney was born in England. Married Frances Hope who was from Stockport, England. They had four children. The oldest son Iscca (probably Isacc) was born in England. The others; Sabina, Alfred, & Oliver Cromwell Hope William Whitney were born in New Jersey. Edgar started for the west (leaving his family in New Jersey) to look for a new home; got as far as Louisiana, contracted Yellow Fever and died. His wife brought the family to live in Iowa at a later date.
Sabina married someone named Smith and died in Seattle, Washington abt 1928-1930.
Oliver Cromwell... was born August 31, 1848 in Bloomfield Twp., Essex Co., New Jersey. He married Elizabeth Ellen Polen. They had four children; Winnifred, Oliver F., Frances May Margette, & Edward Nelson.
He married a second wife Marion Cameron who was born about 1870. They had three children; Iva, Olive Marion, & Dewey.
>From the first marriage, Edward died at age 6. Don't know about Winnifred. Frances married Fred Radtke and lived to 106 (most of this info is from her). Oliver F. is my grandfather, born in 1879 in Iowa and died in 1909 in Britton, South Dakota.
>From the second marriage I only know that Iva married an R. D. Atherton and lived in Westminster, California.
Oliver Cromwell... died April 24, 1928 in Cody, Wyoming. Other than the above, I have a letter to him from a Bessie (Whitney) Bell dated March 27, 1928 from Mondamin, Iowa. It was signed "your niece".
This is all I know. If any of this information ties in with what you have, I would really appreciate hearing from you.

>>If the date of the will was misinterpreted and the date was really 17 Apr 1718/19 instead of 1713 this would still have been before his death and after the death of Alice. This would solve the problem. What do you think?<<
Mary - it depends on how the date was written, I guess.
Robert - is there a way the date could have been misconstrued? You're the only one who has seen Joshua Whitney's will.
Thanks! :-) Jeanne

Re: Whitney News 9-8-96
Hello all my Whitney cousins!
First a request to be removed from our mailing list from Jerrie Moore - e-mail: [email protected]. On 9-8-96, Jerrie wrote: >>PLEASE REMOVE ME FROM MAILING LIST. I have sent three msgs to three different people and no one responds. I know everyone has other things to do and my Whitney's begin with John and Elinor's dau Ruth. Thank you. Jerrie<<
I realize it's summertime & there are alot of things that get in the way of genealogy at this time of year. But I, too, have had a bit of trouble getting some folks to simply acknowledge that they rec'd my messages -- I'm specifically talking about messages directed only to them (not the group mailings). I hate to lose members simply because of lack of communication! Sorry to see you go, Jerrie!
Barbara Black <[email protected]> sent me some interesting information regarding JOSHUA WHITNEY and ABIGAIL TARBELL/TARBALL. My research has not uncovered the spouse of their grandson JOSHUA WHITNEY (b. Groton, Mass in 1714) nor the children of his son AARON WHITNEY (b. 1798) who married SARAH BENNETT. Can anyone help confirm?
On 9/6/96, Barbara wrote: >>An acquaintance shared her WHITNEY genealogy with me several years ago. I took notes.- Not seeing a Daniel I assumed there was no connection.
Since that time I have learned that the father and mother of my DANIEL b.

Do you know the names of the children of AARON b 1789. and SARAH BENNETT? Could this be my DANIEL'S PARENTS.? I noticed that you (Jeanne) were the only descendent of JOSHUA in the WHITNEY group.

Speaking of connections, if anyone else is not on Jon Aston's list of descendants and should be, contact Jon with your line so he can add it to our master database!
I am continuing to find more information in "Bond" - & I will be sending a little at a time. Am finally finishing up the descendants of John & Elinor's son John who married Ruth Reynolds & will send the last of it in my next group message.
Love to all!

Re: Desc. of John Whitney & Ruth Reynolds
We have some of this information already in our database, but this gives us additional documentation -- plus a few more names & dates. Remember to get in touch with Jon Aston <[email protected]> if any of my lists "connect" you! (And send us all a message with your success story!) Also remember that this is just one source. You will want to confirm this further, as Bond is not always the most accurate.

- Bond shows 2 different men named John Whitney marrying 2 different women named
Mary Benjamin. He references the women with separate numbers - referring to his "Benjamin" family in the same book. Although they were of the same generation, they are not the same person.
No further information is given on the descendants of Thomas Whitney & Mary Kedall/Kettle.
On p652, Bond lists various marriages which he could not connect. I have searched our databases & cannot connect them either.
All were married in Watertown, unless another place is listed:
Uriah Whitney, of Natick, and Lydia Mason, m. Nov. 11, 1747 <This MIGHT be MICAH Whitney>
Abraham Whitney and Mary Mead m. Dec. 3, 1772

Jeanne, I haven't had time or resources to do much on my Whitney Line. But I believe that the Mary Whitney who married ??? Elkins, niece of Jeremiah Whitney d. Buckingham Va ca 1787, may be related to David (Davis) and Francis Whitney who were in Edgecombe Co., NC ca 1740. Do you have these Whitney's in your data base? -- Jo Ann Curbo P.O. Hi Rooters,
I've finally gotten some ancestral stuff up on my web page. As with life in general, it is still under construction. At any rate, there are 3 families included here.
1. Hobby--my birth family 2. Adkins--my adoptive family 3. Whitney--my friend Mary-Lib's family
http://www.gremlan.org/~vadkins/hmpg/gen.html
If, by some great miracle (I spend my best days dead-ended :>)), someone connects with any of these families, please let me know. If it happens to be one of my families, I'll bake you some wonderful homemade bread, directly after I'm finished doing cartwheels (and get out of traction).

1. Hobby--my birth family 2. Adkins--my adoptive family 3. Whitney--my friend Mary-Lib's family
http://www.gremlan.org/~vadkins/hmpg/gen.html
If, by some great miracle (I spend my best days dead-ended :>)) someone connects with any of these families, please let me know. If it happens to be one of my families, I'll bake you some wonderful homemade bread, directly after I'm finished doing cartwheels (and get out of traction).

Re: Whitney newsletter 9-21-96
Hello cuz!
Welcome a new member Steve Kraus <[email protected]> who is researching OHIO / IOWA Whitneys. Here's his query, which he posted in the CompuServe Genealogy Forum. Contact Steve with any leads on his line.
>>Seeking ancestry of Ed Ohel WHITNEY, B. 1842 OH. Served in Civil War with Brother Henry Newell who died at Andersonville Prison. Married Mary Esther Askren. Lived in near Fairfield, IA. Father's name was possibly Albert. E-mail 103002,2212 or fax available.<<
Dean Jackson <[email protected]> has found some Whitney photos! Here is his message to me (9-18):
>>While digging thru old family papers I found a page out of the Saturday Evening Post. It was titled "From these forebears came the Whitney fortune". There are about sixteen pictures of Whitneys such as William C. Whitney, Payne, Pauline, Harry Payne, Cornelius Vanderbilt, etc.
Anyone interested ?? Dean<<
One of our newest members, Ron Whitney <[email protected]> sent me this tidbit this week:
>>I don't know if this will interest anyone in the group, but last year on one of our travels we found a little town and lake in NW Nebraska called Whitney. Zip is 69367. Being curious about the origin of the name, I sent a SASE to the Postmaster. Received the following response:
"The original town (handwriting poor, but looks like 1885) was named Dawes City. It was on the south bank of White River. This town was abandoned and a new one started on the north bank (higher ground) 1887. This was named Earth Lodge. However, this name was changed to Whitney - Peter Whitney was an officer in Pioneer Town Site Company.
The town moved when the railroad came. Fremont Elkhorn Missouri Valley."
She said her grandparents on both sides were early Whitney residents. Her grandfather Birkitt started a general store in 1887.

Mary Ann Lindsay sent us this obituary:

Friends and family are welcome to share in an afternoon of memories, Sunday, Sept. 22, 1996 at 2:00pm at Rancho Nicasio, 1 Old Ranchoria Road, Nicasio, CA--- 415-662-2219.<<
Correction to my news of 9-14: >>ABNER WHITNEY-6, son of Samuel & Abigail, b. 18 May 1848<< change birth year to 1748! (typo)
Does anyone have further info on the following: Capt. NATHAN WHITNEY b. (abt 1726?) d. 10 Aug 1803 (age 77) m. TABITHA MERRIAM (she died 26 Dec 1822)

EVEN MORE DESCENDANTS FOUND! I found these in a Gedcom file which was contributed to CompuServe's Genealogy Forum. No sources were listed.
JOEL WHITNEY-5 (Abel-4, Nathaniel-3, Benjamin-2, John-1) b. 7 Sep 1741* (see note below) in York, Maine married in Abt 1767 (We have marriage date as 26 Sep 1765) MARY WEST (we have her surname as WESTON) (no dates or parents given). Joel and Mary (West/Weston) Whitney had the following children, all born in Jonesboro, Maine: 1) Ephraim Whitney b. 7 Nov 1770 m. on 9 Jul 1794 Sarah Noyes 2) Mary Whitney (no date given) 3) Paul Whitney b. 10 Jan 1785 4) Porter Whitney (no date given) 5) Reuben Whitney
- = The birthdate for Joel Whitney of 7 Sep 1741 conflicts with our data. We
have it as 21 May 1743, which I believe to be correct looking at the births of his siblings. However, I also have no source notes. Is he in Pierce?
That's all for this week!

I have been anxiously reading all of the WHITNE mail for the previous months and have been updating my dataset along the way. I have been tied up with work lately and have not been able to jump in the activity very much. I sent this out to some when we first introduced ourselves a number of months ago but the list has grown quite a bit since then I am interested in any ties others may have to my particular WHITNEY line. Here is the direct line. I have a lot of sidelines if anyone is interested but am particularly interested in "later growth" in the tree
John WHITNEY & ELinor
Nathaniel WHITNEY & Sarah Hagar Nathaniel WHITNEY & Mercy Robinson Samuel WHITNEY & Elizabeth Hastings Samuel WHITNEY & Abigail Cutler Samuel WHITNEY & Susannah Kimball Newell Kimball WHITNEY & Elizabeth Ann Smith Isaac Groo & Mary Jane WHITNEY William Alfred Taylor & Vilate Whitney Groo Albert Christian Johnson & Ruth Groo Taylor Rulon Spilsbury Brown & Ruth Jean Johnson Robin Christopher Brown (ME) and Joy Ann Selch Heather Ann Brown (!/7 children) & Layne Curtis Bro
I have quite a bit of data on this and closely related lines and would love to share. Thanks again for everyone's support of WHITNEY research.

Here's my weekly update. This weekend I have a brand new computer - Gateway P166 pentium with Windows 95. I am still learning the Win-95 interface, but looks like I'm going to like it. Now onto the Whitney news.
LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEER(s) to be in charge of a list/mail server for our group.
As Jon Aston told us last week "Regarding the listserver, I believe it requires someone that is willing to devote what may be considerable time and perservance to keep up with it." From what I understand of it, setting it up will take the majority of the time, but once done, weekly maintenance is minimal (1-2 hours per week).
I would be willing to be an active contributing member -- but, as I'm still in the work force (I own a very busy small business), I would not be able to be the sole manager.
Does anyone have experience in this area? Suggestions?? Contacts?? The "pros" outweigh the "cons", in my opinion. Send me your feedback! We'll see what we can see.

>>Subject: Anna WHITNEY Percival
Anna Whitney Percival was married to Warren Percival around 1800. Their first child Julianna was born in Poultney, VT in 1801. My Anna was said to be born in Hadley, Massachusetts, somehow related to the Eli Whitney family. As remembered, she had two brothers (or nephews), Joseph and William (or Wilson) who lived at Oswego, NY at the time of the Civil War. They were preachers and corresponded with the Percivals in Ohio. After her husband's death, she moved to DeWitt, Iowa, and lived with her daughter's family, Caroline and George Woodworth. She died in 1845 and was buried in DeWitt, Iowa.
I would like to find her parents and her connection to Eli Whitney, the inventor of the cotton gin-if any. I have the Whitney genealogies, but can't find my Anna.
Any assistance you can provide will be greatly appreciated. I can provide Percival ancestry for several generations back if you have any interest in them.
Thanks for any information you can provide. Does one ever have the chance to review other association members' surname lists. I have found that several of my Percival sisters married Woodworths.

JOSIAH WHITNEY b. 1688 Groton, Mass d. 1766
Vickie (Elam) White responded with this info. Still no connection. Anybody have other ideas? Don't know who these Whitneys are.
On 9-22 Vickie wrote: >>I looked at Groton VR and found no birth, marriage or death record for this man. I also checked Dunstable, Chelmsford, Westford, Lancaster, and Townsend. The only thing I found was a Josiah and Miriam ( --) WHITNEY living in Chelmsford. They had the following children born in Chelmsford:
Eunice b 5 Nov 1707 Martha b 10 Jun 1712 Josiah b 26 Jan 1714/5 Benjamin b 20 Nov 1718 Miriam b 9 Aug 1721 Peter b 17 Feb 1724/5 Elenor b 2 Apr 1727
A large percentage of the early Chelmsford settlers came from Concord and Woburn, so perhaps this Josiah WHITNEY came from one of those towns. If he is the right one, perhaps his birth record can be found there.<<
