Since I sent my last inquiry about Bernice Lawrence Whitney I have received more information that I would like to pass on. I also have a few questions that I am hoping someone can help me with.

First of all, I have now obtained a death certificate for Bernice. It shows his father as John Whitney of New York, and his mother, Emma Pain of Pennsylvania. Bernice was born in Buffalo, NY Aug 18, 1866 and died in Castle Rock, Cowlitz Co, WA on Jan 13, 1936. Bernice was married to Lillian Matilda Crandall who was born about 1865 in Cherry Creek, NY and died Sept 11, 1914 in Castle Rock, WA.

Bernice also had a sister and a brother listed as living in his obituary. His sister was May Whitney Snow and his brother, C. M. Whitney of Port Angeles, WA. A cousin said he went by the name of "Mentle". I do not know if there were other siblings.

I have been unable to obtain any other information on Bernice's parents other than what was on the death certificate. I do not know where in NY or when John Whitney was born and the same with his mother, Emma Pain. I assume giving a 20 year difference they would have probably been born around 1840. My question is: If someone is born before birth certificates were issued, and married before marriage licenses were required, how does one obtain information on their parents?? I have searched NY census' and without knowing what county they lived in, I've spent many a hour searching in vain. I did find Bernice and Lillian in the 1900 census but nothing on a John and Emma Whitney.

I know from reading other Whitney emails, that I'm not the first to come to a brick wall on the Whitney search. I do hope someone might be able to connect with the information that I have and will contact me.

Thank you for all your help.

Hi Everyone!

I'm new to this group and hope that someone might have information to help me get through my brick wall. My ggggrandmother's name was Emaline Payne who was married to a John Whitney. They had three children that I am aware of. Bernice Lawrence Whitney (my gggrandfather) born in 1866 in Buffalo, NY., Charles Mentle Whitney and Mary Whitney. I got this information from Bernice's death certificate. I assume that Emaline was born around 1846 and I believe she was either born in Pennsylvania or NY. The 1900 census I found for Bernice said his mother was born in NY but his death certificate says she was born in PA. I know I am grasping at straws with no further information, I'm just hoping that someone connects with the Whitneys that may be able to help me.

DNA Testing

Have you considered joining the Whitney DNA Study? For $149, your husband could be tested and determine which of the main Whitney branches you descend from. This would help the descendants of Mantle Whitney as well. Let me know if you would like additional information.
