Revision as of 03:07, 20 November 2009

Jared7 Whitney, ([prob.] John6, Joshua5, Nathaniel4, Nathaniel3, John2, John1), probably the son of John7 and Rachel (Hiscock) Whitney, was born about 1790, and died 2 Apr 1847, Adams Township, Allen County, IN, aged 57 years.

He married, probably before 1817, Catharine Jane Daniels. She was born about 1795, NY, and died after 1850.

He was apparently one of the first settlers of Jefferson Township, Allen Co., IN:

"1833 - Jared Whitney, possibly the first white man, who settled on the Maumee River."[1]
"JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP. It is believed that the first permanent settlement within the limits of this township was made by Jared Whitney and his family. He came in May, 1833, and remained during the summer on the Maumee river, but in the fall took possession of a tract on section 7, which he afterward brought into cultivation."[2]

Children of Jared7 Whitney (probably incomplete):

i. (probably) Alanson8 Whitney, b. 13 Jan 1817, NY, d. 26 Aug 1882, Allen Co., IN, m. Almira Cool.
ii. Harriet Whitney, b. ca. 1822, NY; d. 30 Sep 1850, Jefferson Twp., Allen Co., IN; m. before 1843, Morgan Bentley.
iii. Oscar Whitney, b. ca. 1826, NY; m. 17 Dec 1850, Allen Co., IN, Catherine Hollopeter.
Ch.: Orville, b. ca. 1851; Lemuel, b. ca. 1853; Charles, b. ca. 1855; Lydia, b. ca. 1857.
iv. James Whitney, b. ca. 1828, NY; d. 14 Jul 1856, in 28th year, New Haven, Allen Co., IN.
v. Larancy J. Whitney, b. ca. 1830, NY; d. after 1850.
vi. Angenette Whitney, b. ca. 1832, NY; d. after 1860.

Notes

I suspect he is the son of the John and Rachel (Hiscock) Whitney as he is found in Indiana near an Alanson Whitney of the right age to have been his son, and this Jared had a brother named Alanson.

There are many references to this family in The pictorial history of Fort Wayne, Indiana: a review of two ..., Volume 1, by Bert Joseph Griswold, Samuel R. Taylor.
