Thomas B. Whitney ([poss.] Abel7, Reuben6, Abel5, Nathan4, Nathaniel3, Benjamin2, John1), possibly son of Abel7 and Lydia (Smith) Whitney, was born about 1837, (allegedly Wilton) ME, and died after 1865, but before 1868, probably Gardiner, ME.

He married, 18 Feb 1860, Gardiner, ME, Emily W. Crockett,[1] daughter of John and Celestina (Wilson) Whitney. She was born about 1841, Carthage, ME, and died after 1880. She married secondly, 15 Sep 1868, Gardiner, ME, John Smith.[2] He was born about 1829, and died after 1880.

i. Franklin Thomas Whitney, b. 12 Nov 1860, Gardiner, ME;[3] m. Adaline Maria Pushard.
ii. Bertha Gertrude Whitney, b. 2 Nov 1862, Gardiner, ME;[4] living 1880.
iii. Nellie Emily Whitney, b. 3 Sep 1864, Gardiner, ME;[5] living 1880.

Notes

Thomas clearly was raised in the family of Abel7 and Lydia (Smith) Whitney (Reuben6, Abel5, Nathan4, Nathaniel3, Benjamin2, John1). Pierce says that Abel died without children. It is possible that Pierce is wrong, and that Thomas was, indeed, son of Abel and Lydia. It is certain that Thomas was not a nephew of Abel, as the families of all of Abel's brothers are known, and he doesn't belong in any of them. Another possibility is that Thomas was adopted.
