Pierce says that Abel died without children.  It is possible that Pierce is wrong, and that Thomas was, indeed, son of Abel and Lydia.  It is certain that Thomas was not a nephew of Abel, as the families of all of Abel's brothers are known, and he doesn't belong in any of them.  Another possibility is that Thomas was adopted.
