John J.⁸ Whitney (Eliphalet⁷, Eliphalet⁶, Joshua⁵, Joshua⁴, Richard³, Richard², John¹), son of Eliphalet⁷ and Sally (Ryan) Whitney, was born about 1828, and died after 1880.

He "of Putney, Vt." married firstly, 4 Apr 1853, Freeport, ME, Julietta S. Mitchell of Freeport, by Rev. John Hubbard.^[1]

He married secondly, 6 Nov 1866, Pownal, ME, Charlotte Sawyer, daughter of William Blake and Eunice (Field) Sawyer. She was born 6 Feb 1841, New Gloucester, ME, and died between 1878 and 1880.
