C. F. was raised and educated in Niagara County, NY.  About 1860 he and his brother George went to Allegan Co., MI, where they engaged in the manufacture of rakes for several years. C. F. had a grocery store in Mineral Ridge, OH.  It was 22 x 40 feet with an "L" of 18 x 30 feet and he carried a stock of about $9,500 in value:  dry goods, boots, shoes, groceries, buggies, carriages, sleighs, and lumber, etc.  There were lots of poor Welch miners in the area.  He would extend credit even when nobody paid their bills.  He did a lot for the people of the area and was highly thought of.  C. F. was a member of the Republican Party, served as Township Trustee for twenty years or more, and was a member of the Mineral Ridge School Board.  He was also a member of the Masonic order, blue lodge of Niles, the I.O.O.F., and an Elder in the Presbyterian Church.  He had a stroke in Buffalo at the Worlds Fair.  He spent years in a wheelchair thereafter.
