On Jan. 21, 1821, she married Eli Whitney (brother of John Whitney), who was born Shandaken, July 31, 1797, and died there Apr. 5, 1867. He was a farmer and [p. 18] served in the War of 1812 as a substitute for his uncle, John Higgins. The Commemorative Biographical Record of Ulster County makes the statement that he was a great-grandson of Eli Whitney, the inven- tor of the cotton gin. This is very doubtful. They removed to Onondaga, Mich., in 1845 and settled on a new farm in Section 24. He died as a result of an accident at a log raising. His widow married Joseph Sitts Apr. 24, 1853. On June 18, 1879, Kingston, he married Jennie V. K. Beekman (daughter of Thomas Beekman and Nellie Catherine Van Keuren), who was born Kingston, June 7, 1875, and died there Aug. 27, 1914. He was a merchant and chair manufacturer, director of the National Ulster County, Bank, of which he was the second largest stockholder. He left an estate of approximately $100,000.
