Family:Whitney, Moses H. (c1839-1864)

Moses H.⁸ Whitney (Sedate⁷, John⁶, John⁵, (poss.) Samuel⁴, John³, Benjamin², John¹), son of Sedate⁷ and Dolly (Heal) Whitney, was born about 1839, Lincolnville, ME, and died Oct 1864, Florence, SC, in a Confederate prison.

He married, 10 Aug 1861, Ellsworth, ME, Paulina Zephine Wood, both "of Ellsworth",^[1] daughter of Capt. Emery Newell and Emma Annil (Garland) Wood. She was born May 1846, Surry, ME, and died 1931, Gladys, Campbell Co., VA. Buried in Evergreen cemetery in Biddeford, ME, near the graves of her son, Charles, and her granddaughters, Harriet, Irene and Gladys.

Company G, 8th Maine Regiment, Civil War.

Moses enlisted as a private in the 8th Regiment, Maine Infantry on 29 February 1864 in Ellsworth, Maine. He must have gone directly to the southern battle area for a scant four months later, 18 June 1864, he was reported, "missing in action". A subsequent record from the Andersonville Prisoner of War Camp in Georgia reported him as being "captured" in Petersburg, Virginia on 18 June 1864. There is no information about his capture, or the seriousness of any injuries he might have suffered. There are no further records of Moses life or death. One must then assume that Moses was one of the thousands of Union soldiers that suffered and died at Andersonville and then were buried in unmarked graves. I was told that the commander of that POW Camp was hanged after the war for his inhumanities and violations of accepted treatment of POWs. The Maine Adjutant Generals Report, 1864-65 lists the above information up to and including the missing in action date but nothing on his capture, imprisonment or subsequent death.
