Dea. Horace7 Whitney (Joel6, Jonas5, David4, Benjamin3, John2, John1), son of Joel6 and Abigail (Holden)(Merriam) Whitney, was born 26 Apr 1802, Westminster, MA,[1] and died 18 Sep 1895, Winthrop, MA, aged 93 years 4 months 23 days, of old age.[2] He was buried in Mount Hope Cemetery, Boston, MA.[3]

Marriage intentions were published 7 Feb 1829, Fitchburg, MA, for him and Mary Sawin "of Gardner".[4] He "of Fitchburg" married, 8 Apr 1829, Gardner, MA, Mary Sawin,[5] daughter of Sullivan and Mary (Heywood) Sawin, and granddaughter of Samuel and Martha (Miller) Sawin. She was born 22 Dec 1807, Westminster, MA, and died 7 Jan 1891, Boston, MA, aged 83 years 16 days, of old age.[6]

Horace Whitney was born in Westminster, MA, and lived there until 1823, when he removed to Boston for two (to 1825) years; then spent four (to 1829) years in Fitchburg, MA, having charge of the finishing department in the woolen mill. Then returned to Westminster and engaged in farming and cooperage business for four (1833) years. Then went to Hubbardston, MA, and engaged in farming, lumbering and box manufacturing. In 1845 returned to Westminster and engaged in farming and chair manufacturing. A portion of this time acted as selectman for the town. In 1856 took up his residence in Gardner, MA, and engaged in the chair in the chair business. In 1827 (June) joined the Masonic fraternity, and at the present time is one of the oldest Masons in the state. He is a man of stern integrity and honor, of fixed political and religious convictions, an ardent supporter of the Temperance and Anti-Slavery reforms, and a conscientious member of the Orthodox Congregational church in which he served as deacon at Gardner. His life has been exemplary, useful and happy, his devoted wife, an invalid for many years, displaying through all her feebleness and suffering a wonderful calmness of spirit and serenity of Christian patience, resignation and trust. Resided 75 Kendall St., Boston, MA.

Heywood says the following:[7]

"Whitney, Horace7, bro. of the last, m. Mary (55), dau. of Sullivan and Mary (Heywood) Sawin of W., April 8, 1829. He has res. at different times in Hub., Gr., W., and Boston where he is still living at the advanced age of 91 years. He has been engaged in lumbering, farming, and chair making, as a means of livelihood. A man of stern integrity and honor, of fixed political and religious convictions, an ardent supporter of the Temperance and Anti-Slavery reforms, and a conscientious member of the Orthodox Cong. Chh., in which he served as Dea. at Gr., his life has been exemplary, useful, and happy. His devoted wife, an invalid for many years, displaying through all her feebleness and suffering a wonderful calmness of spirit and serenity of Chn. patience, resignation, and trust, passed to her rest Jan. 7, 1891, at the age of 83."
