Alvin Emerson8 Whitney (Joseph M.7, Ebenezer6, Zachariah5, Zachariah4, Ebenezer3, Richard2, John1), son of Joseph M.7 and Mary A. (Hunt) Whitney, was born 1 Aug 1851, Montague, MA, and died after 1880.
He married, 27 Nov 1872, Montague, MA, Flora E. Bartlett, daughter of Gideon P. and Julia (-----) Bartlett.[1] She was born 10 Mar 1853, Montague, MA, and died after 1880.
He was educated in the public and select schools of Montague, afterward taking a commercial course at Wilbraham academy, from which school he received his diploma in 1869. He learned the tailor's trade of his father and followed that occupation most of the time until 1875. Two years later he took a contract with the Miller's Falls company, remaining with them until 1889, when he received an offer to go to Boston to superintend the work of a new company just starting. Later he was cashier and book-keeper for other companies until March 1894, when, with others, he purchased the New England Mantel company, in which business he was quite successful, and which he afterward disposed of to his associates. He united with the Baptist church but later joined the Congregational denomination. For many years he has been actively engaged in Sunday-school work, and held many responsible positions. For the past eighteen years he has been musical director, and given many concerts and cantatas; resided Beechmont, Revere, MA.
