James7 Whitney (Jeremiah6, Hezekiah5, Hezekiah4, Joseph3, John2, Henry1), son of Jeremiah6 and Elizabeth (Underhill) Whitney, was born 16 Aug 1800, Newburgh, NY, and died after 1875, and died 8 May 1880, Wappingers Falls, NY [Phoenix] or Apr 1880, Wappinger, NY, aged 82 years of old age.[1]

He married 1 Jul 1824, Rosendale Plains, NY,[2] Sally Ann Coutant, daughter of Gabriel and Hannah G. (Roe) Coutant. She was born 20 Oct 1806, Hurley, NY, and died 30 Mar 1890. [The 1880 Mortality Schedule indicates James was a widower at the time of death which would indicate Sally died before 1880 and would account for her not being found in the 1880 census.]

Phoenix says the following:

"James Whitney, b. in the town of Newburgh, N.Y., 16 Aug. 1800, as he says, and neither 1799, as found in the records of the Marlborough Monthly Meeting, nor 1801, as is stated in his father's family-record, in possession of his brother, Jesse Whitney, of Fairport, N.Y.; married at Rosendale Plains, Ulster Co., N.Y., 1 July 1824, by the Friends' ceremony, Sally Ann Coutant, born at Hurley, now Rosendale Plains, 20 Oct. 1806, dau. of Gabriel and Hannah (Roe) Coutant. The marriage-record calls them both "of New Paltz," N.Y. They settled at Esopus, N.Y.; and, in April 1851, removed to the town of Beekman, N.Y., living there until the destruction of their home by fire, on the night of 4 Feb. 1874. They dwelt in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., till Aug. 1874, when they settled at Wappinger's Falls, in Fishkill N.Y."
