During the Revolutionary war he served in one of the companies from Shelburne, and his name is found on the Revolutionary records in the State House of Boston. His farm was located one mile north of the old center. He and his wife were both interred in one grave. They were admitted to the church by letter in 1778, probably from Shutesbury. He died Dec 29, 1813; resided Shelburne, Massachusetts.

Joseph6 Whitney (Joseph5, Thomas4, Thomas3, Thomas2, John1), son of Joseph5 and Hannah (Chandler) Whitney, was born 28 Oct 1748, Roadstown (now Shutesbury), MA, and died 29 Dec 1813
