Family:Whitney, Israel (1775-1843)

Israel⁶ Whitney (Israel⁵, Elijah⁴, Isaiah³, Thomas², John¹), son of Israel⁵ and Hannah (Mead) Whitney, was born 18 Apr 1775, Harvard, MA, and died 17 Jun 1843, Harvard, MA.

He married, 17 Jul 1803, Boston, MA, Phoebe Jennison.^[1] She was born 2 Jun 1781, Boston, MA, and died 4 Dec 1868, Boston, MA.

He was born in Harvard on the old homestead, where he resided until he was 20 years of age. He bought his time of his father for £20 and started for Boston to seek his fortune. He engaged in the shoe business and was quite prosperous. His store was on Court street. During the war of 1812 he enlisted and was soon commissioned an officer in his regiment. He took an active part in this war much to the detriment of his business and great pecuniary loss. The result was a general breakdown from which Mr. Whitney never recovered from this misfortune. He had a sterling and able wife, who at the helm managed admirably, and with the assistance of the sons came out all right. He resided Roxbury, MA.

ii.	Eliza Whitney, b. 9 Apr 1805, Boston, MA;[3] d. 20 Jun 1890; unmarried.
iii.	Henry Whitney, b. 15 Sep 1806, Boston, MA;[4] d. 1 Sep 1808, Harvard, MA.
iv.	Charles Whitney, b. 10 Mar 1809; m. 24 Jan 1840, Worcester, MA, Elizabeth P. Day; b. 24 Nov 1816; d. 5 Sep 1891, s. p. When eleven years of age he worked in a shoe store, but soon left for Malden, MA, where he remained for seven years. Wishing to acquire a more complete education he attended an academy at Stow for three years. At his graduation he engaged in teaching, and later in surveying. He followed civil engineering and surveying until 1891. He had purchased a fruit farm in New Jersey, upon which he resided for twenty years. This he disposed of and has since resided in Roxbury.
v.	Charlotte Whitney, b. 10 Mar 1809; d. 4 Dec 1879; m. Frances Mckenna. He d. 1874. Ch.: Andrew, Alfred, and John.
vi.	Harriett Whitney, b. 3 Feb 1811; unmarried; resided 12 Thornly St., Dorchester, MA.
vii.	Martha A. Whitney, b. 2 Dec 1813; d. 18 Dec 1876; m. Warren O. Rogers; s. p.
viii.	Henry A. Whitney, b. 15 Jan 1815; m. Hannah Stickles.
ix.	Alfred Whitney, b. 11 Feb 1817; d. 7 Jun 1834.
x.	Caroline Whitney, b. 30 Sep 1820; d. 1822.
