Joseph5 Whitney (Thomas4, Thomas3, Thomas2, John1), son of Thomas4 and Mary (Baker) Whitney, was born between 8 Apr 1715 and 7 Apr 1716,[1] and died 7 Apr 1796, Shelburne, MA, aged 80 years.[2]

Joseph married, 7 Aug 1744, Harvard, MA, Hannah Chandler, daughter of Moses and Anna (Sanborn) Chandler. She was born 9 Nov 1721, Stratham, NH, and died 2 Apr 1788, Shelburne, MA, aged 67 years.[3]

He lived at Roadstown (now Shutesbury), MA. He lived in 1776 at Surry, NH.

Pierce says the following:[4]

He was born in Stow, Mass., where his ancestors had been among the earliest settlers. His marriage was solemnized in Harvard, in which town her parents resided, and is one of the first to be found on the record of marriages. Soon after his marriage he moved to a farm in Hampshire county and in the will of a relative he is referred to as "Joseph WHITNEY, of Roadstown, Hampshire Co." In Feb., 1780, he resided north of Deerfield river in the northwest part of Shelburne. He was a respectable farmer in that town, was a member of the church and died there. His wife was admitted to the church by letter.
