:"His son Ami [Whitney], grandfather of our subject, was born and reared in Connecticut, and there married Anna Amsden, a lady of New England birth and ancestry.  Shortly after marriage they left the old home in New England and proceeded to the almost pathless wilds of Ontario County, N. Y., and in the township of Seneca bravely began the struggle which their forefathers had undergone, to build up a home in the forest.  They mutually assisted each other, and applied themselves successfully to the task before them, and in the end succeeded in clearing and improving a good farm, and making a comfortable home.  Mr. Whitney took an active part in the War of 1812 as a commissioned officer of the militia volunteers of a New York regiment, and after his retirement from the army resumed his farming operations, which he conducted skillfully and profitably for many years.  Both himself and his wife passed away from the scenes of their labors at a ripe old age.  They were the parents of thirteen children, nine sons and four daughters, most of whom lived to maturity."{{ref|3}}

Source of marriage date being sought.  Thus far it is only a trail of e-mail addresses.  Date of the marriage comes from an unpublished typewritten manuscript entitled "Some Descendants of Isaac Amsden of Cambridge, MA: by Murray M. Brown, copyright 1934.  This manuscript is in the possession of Mr. Bill Bombard of Boston, MA, who has kindly shared the Amsden data with several researchers, and is the person to whom the e-mail trail was traced. In the manuscript Mr. Brown thanks "some individual contributors and town clerks in general," but does not specifically identify any one source for any specific datum.  For 1934, this is not surprising.  A duplicate record says Jan 16th.  There is an Ami Whitney and an Ami Whitney Jr. in Seneca, Ontario Co., NY in the 1850 Census Index.  Amsden Genealogy ([email protected]) shows his birthdate as 18 Jan 1781.  Author queried.

Ami & Anna (Amsden) Whitney

Ami6 Whitney (Jonathan5, Jonathan4, Jonathan3, Benjamin2, John1) son of Capt. Jonathan5 and Esther (Parkhurst) Whitney, was born 12 or 18 Jan 1781, Conway, MA,[1] and died 14 Dec 1867, Seneca Castle, NY, at age 86, gravestone. He was buried in Sand Hill Cemetery, Seneca, NY.[2]

Ami married 7 Dec 1800, Hopewell, NY, Anna Amsden, daughter of Isaac and Elizabeth (Gates) Amsden. She was born 7 Dec 1784 or 1785, Conway, MA, and died 30 Apr 1858, probably at Flint Creek, NY.

"His son Ami [Whitney], grandfather of our subject, was born and reared in Connecticut, and there married Anna Amsden, a lady of New England birth and ancestry. Shortly after marriage they left the old home in New England and proceeded to the almost pathless wilds of Ontario County, N. Y., and in the township of Seneca bravely began the struggle which their forefathers had undergone, to build up a home in the forest. They mutually assisted each other, and applied themselves successfully to the task before them, and in the end succeeded in clearing and improving a good farm, and making a comfortable home. Mr. Whitney took an active part in the War of 1812 as a commissioned officer of the militia volunteers of a New York regiment, and after his retirement from the army resumed his farming operations, which he conducted skillfully and profitably for many years. Both himself and his wife passed away from the scenes of their labors at a ripe old age. They were the parents of thirteen children, nine sons and four daughters, most of whom lived to maturity."[3]

Notes
