Family:Whitney, Thomas (1764-1819)

Thomas Whitney, parentage unknown, was born 18 Apr 1764,^[1] supposedly in Ireland,^[2] and died 2 Aug 1819^[3] or 6 Aug 1819,^[4] Lexington, Fayette Co., KY.^[5] He was buried Old Episcopal Third Street Cemetery, Lexington, Fayette Co., KY.^[6]

He married, say 1788, VA, Mary ----.^[7]

Fayette County, Kentucky Thomas Whitney, early cabinet maker, native of Ireland, advertised a house for sale in 1795. He continued in the cabinet- making business through 1806, when his shop was on Main Street. Book 49, P 345.^[8]

From the State Archives, Page 52, among expenditures 1792-1798, was one for Thomas Whitney, 1794, as one of the veneremen.^[9]

On 20 Dec 1799, a record concerning "Paving the street in Lexington" mentions John Poftlethwait(?), Thomas Whitney, Adam Rankin, and Andrew Briggs.^[10]

In 1806, "Thomas Whitney, Cabinet-Maker" was listed on Main Street in Lexington, KY.^[11]

In 1818, "Thomas Whitney, Cabinet-Maker" was listed on Main Street in Lexington, KY.^[12]

On 11 Aug 1819, the following appeared in the Kentucky Reporter "Died on 6th - Thomas Whitney an old and worthy citizen."

An undated grave marker for Emily Whitney sits next to that for Thomas Whitney. It is unknown if this was his wife or a daughter.

The Mary Whitney enumerated in Lexington in 1820 was probably his widow.

Thomas Whitney of Ireland, who came to America, married in Va., and resided there and in Kentucky, until his death, August 2, 1819.

Elizabeth O. Whitney, daughter of the above Thomas Whitney, of Georgetown, Ky., married Samuel Bullock.

Notes

Note that if Elizabeth O. (Whitney) Bullock's age on the 1850 census is correct, then she could not have been a daughter of Thomas Whitney as he died in 1819. She may therefore have been a granddaughter. The Sarah Ann Whitney enumerated with her family is most likely her mother, probably the wife of a son of this Thomas Whitney.
