Roswell⁵ Whitney (David⁴, David³, Joshua², John¹), son of David⁴ and Mary (Gunn) Whitney; born 12 Sep 1764, probably Poultney, Vermont, and died 14 Mar 1830, Benton, Yates County, New York.

He married 5 Feb 1788, Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, New York, Phebe Ellsworth, parentage unknown. She was born 5 Jun 1774, place unknown, and died after 28 Aug 1850, when she was living in York Township, Washtenaw County, Michigan.

"WHITNEY, Roswell, NY Line, Phebe, R11484, sol was b 12 Sep 1764 & he m Phebe Ellsworth 5 Feb 1788 & she was b 5 Jun 1774 & their children were; Jacob b 18 Aug 1790, Deborah b 18 Jun 1796, David b 23 Nov 1798, Sarah b 8 Feb 1801, Mary b 4 Mar 1804, Mabel b 8 Dec 1806, Jane b 6 Sep 1808, Martha b 29 Feb 1811, Leroy b 6 Jul 1813, Roswell b 22 Oct 1815 & Phebe b 21 Oct 1820, sol d 14 Mar 1830 & his wid appl 28 Aug 1850 in Washtenaw Co MI a res of Saline Twnshp MI, wid referred to sol's bros David & Jacob Whitney as receiving Rev War pensions & that Roswell Whitney srv with David Whitney but not Jacob Whitney, sol had lived at "Palts" in Ulster Co NY when he enl, sol & wife with his bro David Whitney & James Decker & wife went from "Palts" NY to Poughkeepsie NY to be married at which time sol was age of 25 yrs & she "lacked 4 mths being 16" & wid stated they lived at Palts NY for 15 yrs & they had 2 sons Jacob & David & 4 daughters Deborah, Sarah, Mary & Marther then moved to Seneca Co NY & lived there 30 yrs & had 2 sons there Leroy & Roswell also 3 daughters born there; Mabel, Jane & Phebe, in 1850 7 of the children were still living, wid stated sol d at Benton in Yates Co NY & after sol died his widow moved to Willoughby OH for 4 yrs then moved to Saline Twnship MI."
