James Whitney (Thomas, Thomas), the son of Thomas and Mary (Morgan) Whitney, was born about 1812, Allensmore, Herefordshire, England.

He married, about 1835, Emma -----. She was born about 1811, Dilwyn, Herefordshire, England.

The family was enumerated in 1851 in Lugwardine, Herefordshire where "James Witney" was a Master Tailor and Draper, employer of 4 townspeople. Residing with the family were "Thomas Witney", father, Mary Lloyd, visitor, George Spencer, tailor's apprentice, "John Witney", tailor's apprentice, Elizabeth Hodges, house servant, Robert Hapgood, tailor journeyman, and William Wheel, tailor journeyman.

i. Mary Elizabeth Whitney, b. ca. 1836, Lugwardine, Herefordshire, England.
ii. Emma L. Whitney, b. ca. 1838, Lugwardine, Herefordshire, England.
