Family:Whitney, Edward Winslow (1801-1848)

Edward Winslow⁷ Whitney (Samuel Winslow⁶, Ephraim⁵, Jonas⁴, Moses³, Richard², John¹). son of Samuel Winslow⁶ and Pamela (-----) Whitney; born at Brattleboro, Vermont, 1801; married at Brattleboro, Vermont, Jan 22, 1821, Lavinia Bruce Bemis; born 1798; died Aug 25, 1854, at Fort Covington, New York.

Edward Winslow Whitney was a tanner and currier by trade; worked at his trade in Keene, New Hampshire. Afterward proprietor of the Emerald House, Keene; was interested in a line of stages from Keene to Boston, of which line Benjamin Cheney, of Cheney, Fiske & Company was driver. From Keene he moved to Albany, New York, where he took charge of the Franklin House, near the head of State St., directly opposite the then railroad depot. He died in Albany. He died 1 Jun 1848; resided Dummerston, Vermont, and Fort Covington, and Albany, New York.

i.	Charles Marsh8 Whitney, born 10 Feb 1828; married Delia Minerva Safford.
ii.	Elias Bemis Whitney, born 2 Dec 1821; married Kate Craft and Rhonda S. Burleigh.
iii.	Elizabeth Parsilla Whitney, born -----; married G. B. J. Sawyer, s. p. She died May, 1893, at Waukegan, Illinois.
iv.	Lemuel Bannister Whitney, born -----; died unmarried was killed by explosion in Hague Street, New York.
v.	Edward Sydney Whitney, born -----; died May, 1861, at Malone, New York.
vi.	Mary Jane Whitney, born 11 Mar 1835; married 24 Dec 1856, Edward W. Upham; born 30 May 1834. He was born in Chateaugay, New York; went to Chicago in the early fifties, about 1854; moved thence in a year or so to Waukegan, where he was married and where, with the exception of one year - about 1858-9-he has since lived. During that year he was in Keokuk, Iowa. He has always been in the dry goods or general merchandise business, beginning operations for himself in 1869 or 70 in the firm of Huson & Upham, in 1872 or 73 alone and in 1888 becoming a member of his present firm, G. R. Lyon & Company. About 1880 and for a few years thereafter, he was active in local politics and held the office of supervisor for Waukegan in Lake county. Ch., Edward Darwin, born 13 Mar 1858; unmarried; 307 People's Bank Bldg., Denver, Colorado. During the years 1875 to 1880 he was a teacher in Lake county schools, the last three years being in the Waukegan city schools. He graduated from Amherst College, degree B. A. in 1884, and the following year was principal of the Williams Academy and Stockbridge High School at Stockbridge, Massachusetts. He continued his law studies, theretofore begun under Judge Francis E. Clark, of Waukegan in the office of Stiles & Lewis of Chicago, and was admitted to the Illinois bar in Sept., 1886. He lived in Lincoln, Nebraska, from Nov., 1886, till June, 1887 when he went to Colorado. Is a lawyer in general practice.
vii.	Harriett Mercy Whitney, born -----; married J.W. Robinson and W. E. Peake; s. p. She died June 1894, at Mason City, Iowa.
