Joseph6 Whitney (Caleb5, Jonathan4, Richard3, Richard2, John1), son of Caleb5 and Annis (Church) Whitney,[1] was born 9 Jul 1760, Harvard, MA,[2] and died 24 Sep 1840, Hubbardston, MA, aged 81 years.[3]

He married Esther Crittenden, daughter of Gideon and Esther (Cone) Crittenden. She was born about 1780, CT, and died 25 Jun 1862, Orange, MA, aged 81 years, of old age.[4]

Children of Joseph6 and Esther (Crittenden) Whitney (birth order uncertain):

Census

  • 1790, Templeton, Worcester Co., MA: Joseph Whitney, 1 male over 16.
  • 1800: not found.
  • 1810, Oneida Co., NY: J. Whitney, 1 male over 45, 1 male under 10, 1 female 26-45, 2 females under 10. Although there were 3 "J. Whitneys" in Oneida Co., NY in 1810, only one of them matches this family, with the husband being 50, the wife being 30, a son aged 4, and up to 2 daughters.
  • (perhaps) 1820, Templeton, Worcester Co., MA: Joshua W. Whiting: 1 male 26-45, 1 male under 10, 1 female over 45, 1 female 16-26, 1 female under 10. This enumeration is alphabetized, an indication that it was transcribed. It is possible that in that transcription process, "Whitney" was misread and written as "Whiting".
  • 1830, Hubbardston, Worcester Co., MA: Joseph Whitney, 1 male 60-70, 1 female 40-50, 1 female 20-30, 2 females 10-15, 1 female 5-10, 1 person engaged in agriculture. Resided next door to Horace Greenwood.
  • 1840, Hubbardston, Worcester Co., MA: J.W. Whitney, 1 male 80-90, 1 male 30-40, 1 female 60-70, 1 female 30-40, 1 female 15-20.
  • 1850, Templeton, Worcester Co., NY: Windsor White family

Notes

According to Martin R. Field, "Joseph Whitney married a lady named Esther (Esther Crittenden according to my Grandfather Charles Whitney's chart). They had a son named George Washington Whitney, who was born c. 1806 in Utica, NY."

According to the book "Descendants of Thomas White of Sudbury, Massachusetts - 1638" by Ella White Ford, published 1952, Frances Hunt Whitney, born in Utica, Oneida, NY, was a daughter of Joseph and Esther Whitney (Crittenden). She married Windsor White of Templeton in that town on 10/7/1841, passing away in 1842, according to MA Town Death record for Templeton. Windsor remarried, second, to Frances' younger sister, Elizabeth Pierce Whitney, born 4/1/1821 in Utica, NY (census records suggest MA, though) Artemesia Whitney, younger than Frances, is also mentioned as a daughter of Joseph and Esther.

The 1850 Census for Templeton, Worcester, MA, and the 1860 Census for Orange, Franklin, MA, both show an Esther Whitney, b. abt. 1780, and an Artemesia, b. abt. 1819.

Records for christenings at the 1st Presbyterian Church of Utica indicate the following Whitneys baptized on 7/8/1813:

George Washington Whitney Martha Washington Whitney -- probably m. Harvey Lacey (alt. Lacy) of Jaffrey, NH on 10/21/1828 in Hubbardston, MA (according to MA VR) Mary Robbins Whitney Barah Beckett Whitney (A Baruch Whitney, c. 1812 in NY, is found later in Hubbardston, MA)

And in 7/1815, Frances Hunt Whitney

Additionally, the 1817 Utica City Directory shows a Joseph Whitney.
