James7 Whitney (Jeremiah6, Hezekiah5, Hezekiah4, Joseph3, John2, Henry1), son of Jeremiah6 and Elizabeth (Underhill) Whitney, was born 16 Aug 1800, Newburgh, NY, and died after 1875.
He married 1 Jul 1824, Rosendale Plains, NY,[1] Sally Ann Coutant, daughter of Gabriel and Hannah (Roe) Coutant. She was born 20 Oct 1806, Hurley, NY, and died after 1875.
Phoenix says the following:[2]
- James Whitney, b. in the town of Newburgh, N.Y., 16 Aug. 1800, as he says, and neither 1799, as found in the records of the Marlborough Monthly Meeting, nor 1801, as is stated in his father's family-record, in possession of his brother, Jesse Whitney, of Fairport, N.Y.; married at Rosendale Plains, Ulster Co., N.Y., 1 July 1824, by the Friends' ceremony, Sally Ann Coutant, born at Hurley, now Rosendale Plains, 20 Oct. 1806, dau. of Gabriel and Hannah (Roe) Coutant. The marriage-record calls them both "of New Paltz," N.Y. They settled at Esopus, N.Y.; and, in April 1851, removed to the town of Beekman, N.Y., living there until the destruction of their home by fire, on the night of 4 Feb. 1874. They dwelt in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., till Aug. 1874, when they settled at Wappinger's Falls, in Fishkill N.Y.

i. Hannah Jane8 Whitney, b. 13 Aug 1825, Esopus, NY; d. after 1874, m. 28 Sep 1844, Esopus, NY, Effingham Lawrence, a farmer, who was born at Esopus, 15 May 1811, son of Thomas and Sarah (Smith) Lawrence. They settled at Esopus; and in 1867, moved to East Park, in Hyde Park, NY, where they were living in 1874, without children. ii. Leonard Lewis Whitney, b. 10 May 1827, Esopus, NY; d. after 1873; m.(1) 3 Dec 1846, Olive, NY, Mary Morgan, dau. of Elias and Rhoda (Molyneaux) Morgan, d. 1848, Olive, NY, without children. He m.(2) Elizabeth Elmendorf, widow of Oakley; and lived at 111 Pavonia Avenue, Jersey City, NJ, in 1873. iii. Daniel Butler Whitney, b. 7 Apr 1831, Esopus, NY; d. after 1874; m. 10 Feb 1853, New York, NY, Mary Jane Traver, dau. of Henry and Leah (Kipp) Traver, of Esopus, where she was born 5 July 1833. He was a carpenter and builder. They dwelt in New York City; at Poughkeepsie, NY, till 1 Sep 1855; in Illinois, most of the time at Auburn, till Oct 1859; and then returned to Poughkeepsie. They were living at Wappinger's Falls, NY, in Oct 1874. iv. Elizabeth Whitney, b. 14 May 1835, Esopus, NY; d. 21 Feb 1842, Esopus, NY; buried in Coutant family-cemetery, Esopus, NY. v. James Robinson Whitney, b. 15 Apr 1837, Esopus, NY; d. after 1874; m. 15 Sep 1858, Poughkeepsie, NY, Ruth Flagler, b. 21 Jan 1837, Poughkeepsie, NY, dau. of Zachariah Solomon and Patience (Wilkinson) Flagler. They lived at Aurora, IL, in 1859; at Beekman, NY, in 1860 and 1861; at Great Bend, PA, in 1862 and 1863; at Ackley, IA, in 1864 and 1865; and since that in Nebraska, in the towns of Nemaha, Benton, Humboldt, and Bratton, which last was their home in Nov 1874. vi. Oscar Whitney, b. 20 Oct 1840, Esopus, NY; d. 18 Apr 1843, Esopus, NY; buried in Coutant family-cemetery, Esopus, NY. vii. Egbert Whitney, b. 17 Jul 1847, Esopus, NY; , d. after 1874; m. 23 Apr 1870, Newburgh, NY, Matilda Sammons Traver, dau. of Henry Edward and Frances Brewster (Dunn) Traver, of Eddyville, in Kingston, N.Y., where she was born 6 Sept 1850. He was a carpenter and joiner. They settled in Bedford precinct, NE; and afterward moved to Humboldt, NE, where they were living in Aug. 1874. viii. Adeline Whitney, b. 3 May 1849, Esopus, NY; d. after 1873; m. 15 Oct 1874, LaGrange, NY, Alison Dutcher, b. 6 Aug 1847, Beekman, NY, son of Abraham and Gertrude Ann (Van Voorhees) Dutcher. He was a farmer. They were living at Beekmanville in Nov. 1873.
