Family:Whitney, James (1783-1851)

James6 Whitney (Benjamin5, Daniel4, Henry3, John2, Henry1), son of Benjamin5 and Sarah (Ketcham) Whitney, was born 10 Feb 1783, Warwick, NY, and died 11 Aug 1851, Moulton, Allen Co., OH, of cholera morbus.

He married, 9 Nov 1806, Mary Frisbie, daughter of Abel and Rebecca (Hayes) Frisbie. She was born 11 Jun 1786, New Haven, CT, and died 28 Aug 1851, Moulton, Allen Co., OH.

Phoenix says the following:

. . . a farmer; went in 1801, on foot and alone, to Romulus, N. Y. . . . . They dwelt in Romulus till the Spring of 1814; then moved to Shelby, N. Y., and from there, about 1828, to Adrian, Mich., settling in what is now called West Adrian; thence in 1833, to Nottawa, Mich., where he bought the land surrounding Sand Lake, and dwelt till 1839; then removed to Moulton, Allen Co. (now Washington, Aughaize Co.), Ohio, where he died of cholera morbus, 11 Aug. 1851, and she, 28 Aug. 1851. They were buried in Fort Amanda Cemetery, at Amanda, Allen Co., Ohio. He was drafted in the war of 1812, and not being able to leave home, provided a substitute. After the war, he was, for some years, a captain of militia.

i. Marian Whitney, b. 1 Jul 1808, Romulus, NY; m. Asher Stevens.
ii. Russel Whitney, b. 30 Aug 1810, Romulus, NY; m. Angeline Rogers.
iii. Abel Whitney, b. 26 Jul 1813, Romulus, NY; m. Sarah Ann Budlong.
iv. Rebecca Whitney, b. 22 Jul 1815, Shelby, NY; m.(1) Edmund Burris Brown; m.(2) Cornelius Kline.
v. James Whitney, b. 30 Jan 1818, Shelby, NY; a teacher; moved to Adrian, MI, with his parents, in 1828; never married; passed most of his early manhood in hunting and trapping, but sometimes engaged in teaching and preaching; travelled extensively in the western and southwestern States, from Ohio to Texas; and, in November 1852, was found dead in the woods near La Salle, IL, with nothing to show the cause or the manner of his end. He was buried at La Salle.
vi. William Augustus Whitney, b. 21 Apr 1820, Shelby, NY; m. Ellen Maria Bixby.
vii. Benjamin Whitney, b. 10 Aug 1822, Shelby, NY; m.(1) Minerva Daniels; m.(2) Margaret Josephine Armstrong.
viii. Sarah Whitney, b. 17 May 1825, Shelby, NY; m. William Van Rensselaer Mortimer Layton.
