Joseph6 Whitney (Joseph5, Thomas4, Thomas3, Thomas2, John1), born Shutesbury or Shelburne, Massachusetts, Feb 28, 1748; married Dec 15, 1771, Abigail Barnard; born Jan 5, 1751; died Dec 27, 1813.

He was probably born in Shelburne, where he was married and was a farmer. During the Revolutionary war he served in one of the companies from Shelburne, and his name is found on the Revolutionary records in the State House of Boston. His farm was located one mile north of the old center. He and his wife were both interred in one grave. They were admitted to the church by letter in 1778, probably from Shutesbury. He died Dec 29, 1813; resided Shelburne, Massachusetts.

i. Moses7 Whitney, born Sept 24, 1772; married Lydia Allen.
ii. Lucinda Whitney, born Jan 18, 1776; married 3 Jul 1794, Joseph Merrill; resided Shelburne. He was a cutlery manufacturer and kept a store in s. in 1801. She died Jan 24, 1858. He died Sept 29, 1844.
iii. Hannah Whitney, born 20 Jul 1788; married 14 Jul 1793, Igal Fellows. He died 28 May 1849. Was born 14 Jul 1783; resided Shelburne. She died Apr 11, 1859.
iv. Abigail Whitney, born Feb 13, 1786; married Oct 2, 1808, Rev. Amariah Chandler. He was married three times, this being his first wife. Rev. Dr. Amariah Chandler was born Oct 27, 1782, in Deerfield, Massachusetts. He graduated at college in Burlington, Vermont.; was ordained at Waitsfield, Vermont, in 1810, and preached later at Hardwick, Vermont, and Greenfield, Massachusetts. His wife died at the latter place Jan 19, 1833; ae. 47. He died Oct 20, 1864.

vi. Abigail Whitney, born 19 May 1783; died Aug 3, 1786.
vii. Lidia Whitney, born Feb 21, 1778; died Aug 31, 1852.

ix. Clarissa Whitney, born Feb 13, 1792; married Dec 24, 1812, Philetus Childs; born 1785; died Sept 13, 1858. She died Sept 17, 1860; resided Shelburne.
x. Elizabeth Whitney, born Feb 23, 1774; died in Shutesbury, Oct 23, 1775.
