Family:Whitney, Merritt Austin (1848-1917)

Merritt Whitney (Calvin, Calvin), was born 20 March 1848, Rockport, Knox, Maine, and died 22 April 1917, Rockport, Knox, Maine.

He married, 1883?, Cora Ella Hewett, daughter of Henry Orlando & Elvira (Achorn) Hewett. She was born 21 May 1858, Rockport, Knox Co., Maine, and died 25 Nov 1933, Rockport, Knox, Maine.

Lilian married a man from Prince Edwards Island and moved there. When the marriage failed, she wanted to come back home. Her mother had to go to the town hall and declare all her children in order for her daughter to return to the United States as a citizen. The reference is found at the very end of the town records.

Cora Hewett married first Nathaniel Harkness who disappeared. He was presumed dead, but Cora had to obtain a "divorce in absentia" in order to marry Merritt Whitney. She had one son by N. Harkness.
