Style Guidelines

Page Names

  • Pages should be named in the form "Family:Surname, Given Middle (birth_year-death_year)". If either year is not known exactly, use, for example, a1701 (after), b1701 (before), c1701 (circa or about), s1701 (say, for guesses), or ? (no idea). If the date is a double date, such as 1700/1, use 1701.
  • The names of the pages should typically be named after the husband in the relationship, unless the focus of the page is a daughter of a Whitney individual.
  • In general, do not create pages for individuals who did not marry or have children. Instead, include their information with their entry on their parents' page. An except might be when an exceptional amount of information exists for the individual, and including that information on the parents' page would make that page difficult to read.

Dates

  • Dates should be in the format 12 Jan 1852.

Names

  • Surnames should have their first letter capitalized, but should not be in all capitals.
  • The first mention of the names of primary individuals (the subject, wives, and children) should be bolded to allow for easy location by readers.

Template

Here is the template as it now exists. Keep in mind that we're developing the 'advanced' template now, and we'll create a simplified version later based upon this one. Edit this template here

Using the Template

Go to the Start a new page form. Fill in the name of the page in the box labeled "Add a New Family Group Record", and click on the button labeled "Add new Family Group". The above template will be automatically inserted in the edit window of the page you are creating. Just enter the information into the template for names, dates, places, other information, and references. Then preview the page. Continue to edit and preview until you are satisfied with the results. Then save the page, and you're done!
