All but one of these are Middlesex County, and include some very familiar names in the Watertown section. Let me make a couple of corrections in the list I sent out a few days ago. 1) In the Harvard section, Zachariah Whitney is of Fitchburg, not Fichtburg 2) In the Shrewsbury section, Nathaniel Whitney married Molly Houghton, not Houston 3) In the Northboro section it says None, but I failed to notice that Rev. Peter Whitney was listed as having served the church there. I only joined the list a short time ago and posted the information that I had on the Whitney line but I could not get a firm connection although Val Adkins did have some info which pointed to a connection. I did send an email to you, Jeanne, but did not receive a reply. I seem to have a problem with anyone who has a Compuserve address. Anyhow, I am descended from person #3. Lewis Jones, father of the Lydia that married Jonathan in 1656, was married to an Anna Stone, b. ca 1610? supposedly in either Boxted or Great Bromley, Essex, England [source for this not in my file]. My data for daughter Lydia comes with an Ancestral File Number [8PGF-9H] attached, but the information for Lewis and Anna does not. That source says Lydia was born in 1632 in Sherborn, Middlesex, MA (rather than in England, but I am certainly not challenging Jeanne's source on this, as most of you have heard before what I think about the reliability of Ancestral File). If this MA birth were so, then her father, Lewis, should be findable in the "Great Migration" series, which, I think, runs from ca 1620 to 1632. Jeanne, do you have access to that on your CD's? If not, does someone else?? Further, Bond, in the Appendix, p. 814 says Lewis Jones moved to Watertown ca 1650. From where? Sherborn? Does anyone have access to the VR for Sherborn?? The nearest collection of MA VR that I know of is in Frankfort, KY, over 125 miles away. My notes also say that Anna (Stone) Jones died 1 May 1680, and is buried in Grave #7, Watertown Cemetery, but again do not show from what source this information is taken. It may well have come with a GEDCOM, or I may have picked it up from an on-line posting and was either not given or failed to note the source. I do have four other children for Lewis and Anna (Stone) Jones [Lydia being given as the oldest], if anyone wants to try to look for VR for this family. I stated in the book, based upon a lot of previous research, that she was "probably" a Stone. She was not. Although I do not have the reference handy (I just moved and my source material is somewhere in the garage), Lewis Jones' spouse was not a Stone. I simply missed a very good piece of research that explored the question of her parentage. To my knowledge, no one has been able to identify the parents of either Lewis or Anna. By the way, my book is available through Heritage Books. It is entitled A Few More Descendants of Lewis Jones. Since its publication, I have made many updates and corrections based upon the kindness of many others. If anyone is interested in sharing information about the Jones line, please let me know. Date: Sat, 9 Nov 1996 10:32:17 -0500 I'll add my somewhat belated "amen" to the opinion of Rich from Tampa that we Whitneys have not been abusive with chit chat and that, in any case, such lighter talk often provides insight into the genealogical work we are all pursuing. A wise old fellow who is the town historian in my small New England town once told me that putting the charts together in genealogy is merely putting the skeleton together but that the real fun and real substance comes from filling in the details about the lives of the ancestors. We help each other fill in those details through our chit chat. Having said that, I might as well leave you with an anecdote about one of my Whitney ancestors. For those of you interested in Vermont Whitneys, this is about my gr-gr-gr-gr-grandfather Silas Whitney, (John-Thomas-Thomas-Benjamin-David), who was born in Massachusetts in 1737 and died in Clarendon, Vermont (a nice community just south of Rutland) on 3-13-1813. He married Jane Pearson in Shrewsbury, MA on 4-15-1758. That information came from the Pierce book and a Shrewsbury History I found in the Worcester, MA library. I found from records at the Univ of Vermont library that Silas fought in the Revolutionary War whenever the British were near Clarendon and the local militia was mustered. I even found copies of the militias pay records and found that, towards the end of the War, he was the Clerk of the militia. I also learned that he had a neighbor named Marsh who was a loyalist. Vermont passed an Act that allowed for the confiscation of land owned by Loyalists. Silas took advantage of the Act and took possession of the Marsh land. Afte the War, Silas refused to return possession and use of the land to Marsh. They then engaged in a long dispute during which time Silas once harvested his land and, while he took a break for supper, Marsh took possession of the harvested crops. Eventually, Marsh became politically active, served in the legislature, obtained the assistance of Ethan Allen and had an Act passed allowing him to retake legal title to a good part of the property. A couple of years ago I visited Clarendon to find the grave of Silas. I drove all over the town and could not find his grave in any obvious cemetery. I then drove to their very small Town Hall and opened the door. The door opens immediately into a meeting room rather than a hallway. When I entered, all discussion stopped and all eyes turned towards the stranger and the Chairman asked if he could help me. I muttered that I was looking for the grave of my ancestor, Silas Whitney. A loud response from several attendees could be heard and the Chairman proceeded to mention the Marsh-Whitney rivalry and indicated that Silas was prominently mentioned in a "History of Clarendon" book which I could buy from the Town Clerk, who of course obliged me on the spot. The great irony is that they indicated that I could find the grave of Silas just down the road in a roadside private cemetery known as the Marsh Cemetery. I went and found the grave of Silas, well kept and appropriately designated by the Storey Chapter of the DAR. Silas and his family are resting in peace right beside Marsh and his family. Sorry for the rambling, but I am recovering from shoulder surgery and finally have time to communicate. Maybe we need to be more organized. Possibly have officers and thus a structure which could arrange for regional and national reunions. I hope this information is useful to someone. My view is that the parentage of Thomas Whitney of Westminster is still unproven, and probably unknown. ----- Begin Included File ----- Reed, Paul C., "Whitney Origins Revisited: John-1 Whitney of Watertown, Massachusetts, and Henry-1 Whitney of Long Island and Norwalk, Connecticut," _The_American_Genealogist,_ vol. 69, No. 1 (Jan 1994), pp. 9-14. It has been claimed that John-1 Whitney, of Watertown, Massachusetts, is of illustrious and royal descent. The strongest argument for such a connection was put forth by Henry Melville in his _Ancestry_of_John_ _Whitney_..._ ([New York, 1896], hereafter _Whitney_Anc._). Melville cited pedigrees found in the Harleian manuscripts, now at the British Library, London (MSS 1442, fols. 66, 67), that had been drawn up on behalf of John Whitney, apparently a cousin of the New England immigrant. This John claimed to be the male heir of the Whitney family of Whitney, Herefordshire, and stated that his grandfather, Thomas Whitney, gentleman, of Westminster, was a son of Robert Whitney, a younger son of Sir Robert Whitney by Sibel Baskerville--and thus the royal descent. Melville also supplemented his genealogy with many transcriptions of wills, chancery records, inquisitions _post_mortem_, and other primary sources, making his work appear to be highly trustworthy. Donald Lines Jacobus challenged this line in an article published in 1933 (_TAG_ 10[1933-34]:84-88). Jacobus tentatively accepted the conclusion that John-1 Whitney of Watertown, Massachusetts, was a son of Thomas Whitney of Westminster, but he argued that the latter was not the son of Sir Robert. Jacobus concluded that the pedigree was either incorrect or fraudulent, and that chronology made such a connection implausible (_TAG_ 10[1933-34]:87). The burden of proof was therefore unmet. Some descendants still cling to the hope that the immigrant descends from royalty, however, and the connection is still appearing in new publications. It is argued that, though Sir James Whitney died on 31 May 1587, aged forty-two, his younger brother, Robert (supposed father of Thomas Whitney of Westminster), could have been born about 1548-9 (given ten- to fifteen-month birth intervals). His alleged son, Thomas Whitney of Westminster, married Mary Bray on 12 May 1583. Assuming that both Robert and Thomas were about seventeen when they married, the connection still seemed chronologically possible, even if unlikely. It should be pointed out that, although John Whitney made such a claim, it was unsubstantiated and not accepted by the College of Arms. We can now show that the claim is not only unlikely, it is certainly false. The allegation for the marriage license of Thomas Whitney and Mary Bray is recorded in the first act book of the Dean and Chapter of Westminster (fol. 94, Family History Library [FHL], Salt Lake City, film #94,507: Joseph Lemuel Chester and Geo. J. Armytage, eds., _Allegations_for_ _Marriage_Licenses_Issued_by_the_Dean_and_Chapter_of_Westminster,_1558_ _to_1699_..._, Harleian Soc. Pubs., 23[London, 1886]:8). Though it did not specifically state the ages of the groom and bride, it must be concluded that Thomas Whitney was at least twenty-one on 10 May 1583, the date of the record, because no mention of consent is made. This would push his birth date back to at least 1562, probably earlier (a point not made by Jacobus). James Whitney, Thomas's alleged uncle, was found to be aged twenty-three at the inquisition _post_mortem_ of his father, taken 18 September 1567, and aged forty-three at the time of his own death on 31 May 1587. He was therefore born about 1544. The Robert Whitney who was younger brother of Sir James and Eustace would therefore be born no earlier than the beginning of 1546, and more probably 1548 or later. Robert Whitney would not have fathered a son at age thirteen! That Robert was definitely third, not second son is proved by the entail of land made in Sir James Whitney's will (Prerogative Court of Canterbury [PCC] 38 Spencer), which agrees with _Llfyr_Baglan_, a collection of pedigrees compiled by the Welsh scholar, John Williams, between 1600 and 1607 [Note 1]. The administration of Sir Robert Whitney, their father, was granted to his relict, Dame Mary, and son James Whitney on 5 February 1567/8 (PCC Admons. Act Book, 1559-1571, fol. 128). At James's death, and administration _de_bonis_non_ was granted to Robert's son, Eustace Whitney, on 1 February 1588/9. Sir Eustace Whitney died in 1608, heir of his elder brother James. Eustace's four granddaughters eventually became coheirs of the estate. Thomas Whitney of Westminster had a son Robert, whose son John claimed to be male heir in 1676, about the time that the Hereford estate was settled among the female coheirs. It is most likely that the claimant was trying to obtain some sort of inheritance to make his life less burdensome. The wills of both the claimant's parents were proved in the Archdeaconry of London. Their residence was the parish of St. Peter Cornhill, London, where Robert Whitney, merchant tailor, was buried on 3 Apr 1662. Robert Whitney's original will was dated 19 January 1661/2 and proved 16 April 1662 (FHL Film #94,280). He was of a very low estate, though a citizen and merchant tailor. He gave his loving children John and Mary Whitney 5s. each. He also gave John the great ring he had had from his father. His daughter, Mary, was to receive the lesser ring he usually wore. Robert gave his wife Mary the lease of the house they lived in for the remainder of the term during her widowhood. Mary was made sole executrix. Though the will was sealed with a small seal which appeared to be in good condition it could not be made out on the microfilm copy. The original will of Mary Whitney was dated 23 October 1667 and proved 11 February 1667/8 (FHL Film #588,057). She left her son, John Whitney, and his wife, Elizabeth, 5s. each, to be paid within a year and a day after her decease. She gave her loving grandchild, Jane Whitney, one silver gilt spoon. She also mentioned her cousin Mary West, daughter to Edward West, to whom she left 12s. The residue was left to her daughter Maryfrances [sic] Whitney, whom she made sole executrix. Lastly, she gave 12d. to her friend Anne Stockinhall, who was to be overseer. In the following records, Mary was stated to be relict of Robert Whitney, of St. Peter Cornhill, London, deceased. William Parker, parson of St. Peter Cornhill, was assigned to administer the estate on 13 February 1667/8 during the minority of the executrix, Mary Frances Whitney. Neither will made any reference to a connection with the Whitneys of Whitney, county Hereford. If John Whitney, the claimant, were male heir of the Whitneys of Whitney, it would seem inconceivable that the female heirs would have allowed him to fall into such relative poverty. Some legacy or settlement would have been given to him if he had any proof for his claim. As it is clear that the parentage of Thomas Whitney of Westminster is unknown (though examined by Horatio Gates Somerby in 1871), we present a clue to the actual origin of the family in the marriage entry of Robert Whitney, son of Thomas of Westminster. He married Mary Towers at Stepney, county Middlesex, on 18 January 1635/6 (original register on FHL film #579,245; Thomas Colyer-Fergusson, _The_Marriage_Registers_of_St._ _Dunstan's,_Stepney,_in_the_County_of_Middlesex_, 3 vols. [Canterbury, 1898-1901], 1:239: "Robert Whitney of Westminster merchantailor & Mary Towers of Tarvin [the printed transcript says "Tarring," but is in error] in the Coun[ty] of Chester maid maried by licence from the Office of Facult[ie]." [There is a gap in the marriage allegations of the Faculty Office during this period.] The pedigree made by John Whitney, the 1676 claimant, states that his mother was a daughter of John Towers, of Chester or Shropshire (_Whitney_ _Anc._, 272-73). It seems likely that Robert Whitney, Thomas's father, had close connections in Cheshire. Only one prominent Whitney family was situated in Cheshire, seated at Coole Pilate in the parish of Acton. Howell Whitney held land there in 12 and 17 Richard II [1388-1394] (George Ormerod, _The_History_of_..._Chester_..._, 2d ed., 3 vols. [London, 1882], hereafter Ormerod, 3:389) and in 1404. The male representative of the family when Thomas was at Westminster was a Robert Whitney, gentleman, of Coole (married 1574/5), who is found in 1593, 1600, 1614, and died 24 January 1615/6 at Coole, leaving his grandson Hugh (son of Hugh), his heir (born January 1601) (R. Stewart-Browne, ed., _Cheshire_Inquisitions_..._, Record Society of Lancashire and Cheshire, 91[n.p., 1938]:169-71). The fullest purported account of the Cheshire Whitney family is found in S. Whitney Phoenix's _The_Whitney_Family_of_Connecticut_..._ (3 vols. [New York, 1878]). It traces the ancestry of Henry-1 Whitney of Long Island and Norwalk, Connecticut, from the ancient family by way of counties Hertford, Essex, and Chester. Such a connection would have provided a better royal descent than the main branch of the Whitneys had. Unfortunately, the work is based on many false and dubious sources. A careful examination found that nine key documents used to prove connections do not exist. Had they been real, their discoveries would have presented one of the most brilliant compilations in the field. The purported English ancestry was the work of Harriet A. Bainbridge DeSalis; and after he had published the book, S. Whitney Phoenix became suspicious. He commissioned the distinguished Anglo-American genealogist, Joseph Lemuel Chester, to examine the accuracy of Mrs. DeSalis's work. Chester quickly noted the fraud. [MORE DETAILS ABOUT THE FRAUDULENT DOCUMENTS PURPORTING TO PROVE THE ANCESTRY OF HENRY-1 WHITNEY OMITTED -- RLW] Actual sources for the early Cheshire family are meager and scant, and provide no hint or illustrious royal descent such as the Parry and Vaughan matches would have provided. It is most likely that Thomas Whitney of Westminster descends from the Cheshire Whitneys at Coole Pilate, in Acton, near Nantwich. A Thomas Whitney, found in 1505, 1510, and 1517, and earlier in the reign of Henry VII (1485-1509), married Anne Brooke, daughter of John Brooke, of Leighton, Cheshire, and Jane Meverell, of Throwlegh, county Stafford (Ormerod, 3:454). It would be through this connection that the only possible royal descent for this family might present itself. That the family spread beyond Cheshire is clear from the will of Geoffrey Whitney, son of an earlier Geoffrey. Born at Coole Pilate about 1548, he attended both Oxford and Cambridge, was under-bailiff of Great Yarmouth, county Norfolk, 1580-86, and admitted to the university at Leyden 1 March 1586 (Joseph Foster, _Alumni_Oxoniensis_..._1500-1714_, 4 vols. [London, 1887-92], 4:1623]; John and J. A. Venn, _Alumni_Cantbrigiensis_, Pt. 1, 4 vols. [Cambridge, 1922-27], 4:396]; and _Dictionary_of_National_Biography_). His will, dated 11 September 1600 and proved 28 May 1601 (PCC 33 Woodhall), mentioned many relatives, including his brother, Brooke Whitney, of Oxford and Berkshire (PCC 100 Byrde) [probably a great-grandson of the Whitney-Brooke alliance], Geoffrey Whitney, of Draiton, Shropshire (citizen and merchant tailor of London, PCC 15 Bolein), and Walter Whitney, citizen and plasterer of London (Commissary Court of London, Orig. Will, 1608), but no possible reference to Thomas of Westminster was noted. [MORE ABOUT HENRY-1 WHITNEY OMITTED --RLW] ... I think they stopped in one or more other ports to pick up other passengers - possibly Plymouth or Falmouth, but I'm not sure. Elinor was very pregnant with Joshua at the time, and he was born in Watertown on 5 Jul 1635, so the ship probably took five to six weeks on this passage. I certainly don't envy Elinor the journey in a small, cramped ship (I've been in the reconstructed versions of the three Jamestown [VA] ships, and the small size of the spaces available for the passengers and crew absolutely amazed me, even if the people were smaller at that time than we are today). John Whitney certainly must have brought with him a moderate "treasure", as he was able to secure property in Watertown very quickly, and became a "freeman" of that town in a short time - he later was Town Clerk. In England he had been a member of the *Merchant - Taylor's (Tailor's) Company, having served an apprenticeship to one of their members (I've got all of this on paper if you want dates, apprentice master, etc.). This did not mean that he sat and sewed garments, but more likely that he was in business as a merchant, buying and selling cloth and possibly some finished goods. After finishing his apprenticeship and time as a journeyman, he became a full member of the Company, and soon took his younger brother, Peter, as an apprentice. Peter later also became a member of the Company, lived and died in the parish of St. Peter Cornhill in London. I have speculated that John came to America because of his perception of the lack of economic opportunity for his five sons. Certainly by 1634/5 the solidity of the Massachusetts Bay Colony had been made clear, and there had been time for news of the economic opportunities available there to have circulated. With five sons, and a pregnant wife, it may have well looked like a better place than London of that time. Remember, the civil/religious unrest that led to the rise of Cromwell and the establishment of the Commonwealth was getting started by then. He must have had a business to sell to raise the money to buy passage for himself, his wife and five sons, and to establish the family quickly in Watertown. * * * * * * * I began this as a direct response to Edward, and then thought that it might better be posted to the whole group, especially after the messages today from Jim Whitney and Sue Rood. So, while I am addressing the whole WRG, - yes, Peg Sanborn, you made it to the right spot. I sent you a direct message earlier tonight, inviting you to join the group, and then found out you already had. Yes, Jeanne, I was aware that Edward lived in England. We had already had some brief correspondance prior to his finding the group, and discussed mutual preferences for eating places, etc. in Herefordshire. I know that we might get some help from him on some of our *English Whitney Problems*, but I have not yet had the time to explore his penchant for travel and freedom to pursue various avenues of research. Since he is in Hereford, perhaps he could get to Bangor fairly easily and explore the *cache* of Whitney records stored there at the University (Ros Dunnico, Jon Aston's *not-on-line* English friend, identified these for me when we met this past summer). I wouldn't yet know where else to send him for Henry after I pretty well exhausted my own ideas in that direction last summer. We need to wait for Arvy to get to the GLRO and check out my idea for identifying the parents of Thomas Whitney, John's father, in the parish records of Lambeth St. Mary. If that turns up something pertinent, then we can try to figure out where to go from there. AND, I guess we are going to have to follow up on exploring the Cheshire lines of the Whitney family, but I have never looked in that direction and haven't a clue about how to start (except for what I know about Cheshire resources from working there following my wife's lines). It will have to wait for me until I can get back to the Library of Congress next summer. Peg, Thomas Whitney was born (supposedly) in 1563 in Lambeth Marsh, Surrey (the LDS CD series called Ancestral File says Lambert Marsh, but there is no such place as far as I can find in Surrey, and there is a Lambeth Marsh just across the river (Westminster Bridge) from St. Margaret Parish, Winchester, which was that of his wife, Mary Bray, and which was where most (all? I'm going from memory here) of his children were christened. I've seen the original parish registers in the Library of Westminster Abbey, where they are stored (St. Margaret's is on the grounds of the Abbey and is the *local* church for the people of that area). Mary Bray was christened on 24 Dec 1564, daughter of John Bray and Margaret Haslonde. I haven't said anything about Thomas's parents because there has recently arisen a serious challenge to the long-held idea of his parentage. I'll tell you (and anyone else who wants to know) more about that problem later in a private (or public, if enough ask) message. Note the comment above about Arvy going to the Greater London Record Office - he's going in late November, and after he looks there, we'll have a better idea about how to proceed. Pierce I copied the following account of a visit to Whitney-on-the-Wye. I hope this gives you a little insight into the history of the Whitneys and the Wye. Visit to Whitney-on the Wye by Hon. William Whitney Rice In the month of June 1892, I took the train, accompanied by my wife, from Herefordshire to the parish of Whitney-on-the Wye, seventeen miles distant, to see if perhaps I could learn anything there of our ancestors. There are none now bearing the name of Whitney, but there are the manors of Whitney and Clifford formerly owned by the Whitney family and not yet wholly alienated. Whitney is a section of beautiful country with an old stone church, stone cottage for the rector, and a somewhat modern manor house. We could no public carriage for our conveyance. We found we had an hour and a half before the departure of the next train for London, and we resolved to make the most of that time, with such directions as we could get from the station master, who was very accommodating and intellegent. He refered us to the rector, Rev. Henry Dew, as a gentleman who would receive us hospitably and furnish us all the information that there was to be had on the subject of our inquiries. >From the station the outlook over the sorrounding country embraced in the manors of Whitney and Clifford was as lovely as anything we had seen in England, the Wye flowed through the valley a few rods below the station while the broad fields and forests stretched away in the distance toward the Welsh mountains which were the principle features in the landscape. The rectory was a quarter or a half mile distant. Going from the station we passed by the pretty little church. we entered the churchyard and searched for the Whitney memorials. We found none, because, as we afterward learned some time in the middle of the eighteenth century the Wye, in a freshet, swept away the old castle, the old church and the monuments and graves of the Whitneys from the time they settled in that place. The new church contains many of the old granite stones which were left from the ruins of the old church. The old font, hollowed from a solid granite block, which was there before the freshet, probablly from the original building of the church and in which the Whitney infants have been baptized probably from the eleventh or twelfth century, was also recovered from the ruins and placed in the new church where it still stands. I have a photograph of that font taken since I was there, which I shall be happy to show to any of the modern members of the family. Leaving the church we went up the hill through a lane bordered by trees, to the rectory where we were saluted by the vigorous barking of a small, black dog. A young lady, whom we afterward ascertained to be the daughter of the rector, soon made her apparence. She left us to seek her father , and soon he came and took use to the garden in front of the house where he had been working among his flowers. He was a straight, dignified English clergyman who, when he learned who we were and what we desired, at once gave us a cordial and hospitable welcome. He invited us into the house, where another daughter, Miss Jane joined us. We prolonged our call there with him and his daughter as long as we could remain. Out of that call sprang a most interesting correspondence with Miss Dew, the daughter, from which I have derived much of the information made use of in the following record. I presume that I have more than twenty letters from her, generally very long and full of interesting details. I think she must of spent a great deal of her time in looking up ancient records to find material for her letters to me. I shall always entertain sincere friendship and respect for Re. Henry Dew and his accomplished daughter Miss Jane. Rev. Henry Dew was the brother of Sir Tompkyns Dew, the last owner of the estate. He was a decandant of the Whitneys through some of the female members of the family to whom the estate came because of the failure of the male line. Sir Tompkyns little daughter, at the the time of our visit about five years old, represents the broad acres of the estates of Whitney and Clifford, now, I regret to say, so heavily mortgaged that it seems quite possible, if not probable, that by the foreclosure of the mortgages they will soon pass into unknown and alien ownership. I believe that the rector's tenure of the living can not be terminated during his life, but at his death the pretty rectory, where he has lived more than fifty years and has much beautified, will pass to strangers with the rest of the estate, and thus the last Whitney traces be obliterated from the spot with which they have been so long connected. After the conquest the manor of Whitney, so called, was given by William the Conqueror to Torstinus, one of his soldiers. It was one of nine tracts granted to this same person according to the Doomsday book, and the one upon which he settled. He was a valient fighter, one of the northern sea-rovers who joined the army of William, on the expedition for the conquest of England. The amount of bounty allotted him by William shows that he was a man of conquence. He was specially commissioned to guard the frontiers against the incursions of the Welsh, and for this purpose had his castle on the Wye and within the bounds of the present manor of Whitney. His son Eustacius, who inherited his property, assumed the name of Whitney, which has been borne from that date to the present time. The Whitneys were the chief men in the vicinity, sheriffs of the countyand Members of Parliament. Several of them lost their lives in the wars at home and abroad, to which they were summoned by their Kings. A decree of King Henry IV, dated Feb. 14, 1404, commences as follows: "The King to all to whom,&c., Greeting- "Know ye that since the father of Robert Whiteney, Esquire, and his uncle and a great part of his relations have been killed in our service at the capture of Edmund Mortemer, and his property has been burned and destroyed by our rebels of Wales, so that the said Robert has not any castle or fortress where he can tarry to resist and punish our aforesaid rebels as we accept (accessimus) We, of our special grace, habe granted to the said Robert, the Castle of Clifford and the lordships of Clifford and Glasbury, together wit all the lands, tenements, " &c. By this act the lordship of Cliford, on the opposite side of the Wye and adjacent to Whitney, was added to the domain of the Whitneys and has so remained until the present day. In the last part of the 17th century Sir Thomas Whitney, lord of these estates, died leaving his son, Sir Robert Whitney, as his heir. Sir Robert had four sons, who all died without issue. He also had four daughters, to whom his estate descended upon his several sons died without issue. One of the daughters married Robert Rodd, to whom and the other daughters came, apparently by the the law of inheritance. Through them it ultimately came to William Warden, who was owner at the time of the freshet, by which the church and the castle were destroyed. He rebuilt the church and the manor house. The ruins of the castle may still be seen where the freshet left them. This property passed from the male line of the Whitneys to the female decendants, through whom it is still held. Thus, although the name of Whitney still remains attached to the property, the individuals of that name are not connected with it, but are widely scattered both in England and in this country. July 20, 1592, John Whitney was baptized in the St. Margarets Church, London. He was the son of Thomas, who was the the grandson or great-grandson of the last Sir Robert Whitney. In 1635 with his wife, Eleanor, and five children he embarked for America. Here he settled in Watertown, where hi continued to reside for the remainder of his life. His sons settled either in Watertown or towns near it. His grandson, Nathaniel, settled in the western part of Watertown, which is now Weston. Arms. Azure, a cross chequey or sable. Looking for info on Samuel Whitney born ca. 1615 in England, will proven 1674 in Bermuda. There is a chapter in "Some Southern Colonial Families Vol. 5" that proves me back to Samuel. There is also an interesting item on who his father maybe but they hadn't proven it yet when the book was printed. They make a good arguement that the father of Samuel was Capt. Francis Whitney who died in Bermuda in 1619 from injuries when the mast of his ship broke in a storm. They infer that Capt. Francis was an army capt. not a sea capt.. It's thought the ship "Garland" was transporting prisoners to VA so that's why he was onboard to take charge of them. It is know he held two shares in the Virginia Company for the trip so it's quite likely he had his family with him and was going to stay in VA when he got there. So does anyone have any info on a Francis Whitney who would have been old enough to have been an army capt. by 1619? A check of the listings that I sent out recently revealed that some mistakes had crept in - either in my transcribing or their data entry. Also, the process of searching electronically caused the omission of some *negative* information, namely the *Towns* that did NOT have Whitney marriages in them in this source. It must be remembered, however, that these seemingly came from church and minister's records, and should be matched up with the Town Vital Records for completeness. Here then are the corrections to my earlier postings. 1) In Worcester, the marriage date for William Oak and Abigail Whitney should be 29 October 1763, not 1765. 2) After the entries for Mendon, the entries for the towns of Uxbridge, Rutland, Dudley and Sturbridge appear without any Whitney marriages. 3) In Lunenburg, the last entry, Edmund Stone was married to Susanna Whitney (rather than Susanne) 4) In Bolton, correct the spelling to Phinehas Warner (from Phineas) 5) In Upton, another spelling error, as Amos Whitney was married to Eunice, not Enice. 6) In Shrewsbury, Katherine Davenport should be spelled with an *a* - Katharine. 7) In Sutton, Elizabeth Whitney should be spelled Elisabeth. 8) Also in Sutton, Eli Whitney was married to Judith Hazeltine, not Hazelline. SECOND POSTING - MIDDLESEX 9) At the beginning, the towns of Billerica, Cambridge, Charlestown & Chelmsford had no recorded Whitney Marriages in this source. 10) After Concord, the towns of Dunstable, Groton and Holliston had none. 11) In Lancaster, the date on Nathaniel Whitney and Mary Holeman should be 1719. 12) Marlborough, Malden and Medford had no W. marriages, nor did Reading after the one listed in Newton. 13) Sherburn should be spelled Sherborn 14) In Watertown, the date for Richard W. & Mary Coldham does say 19 Jan 1650, but I still wonder if the original didn't say *1st month* somehow, and get mistranscribed as January when the first month was actually March, as it appears in other records. Apropos this matter, a modest percentage of the dates are given showing awareness of the double dating system, but many dates in January, February and March appear without the dual year being shown, which always leads to the question of whether or not they have been *corrected* already. 15) In Watertown, there was an entry omitted, as follows: James Whitney & Mary Flagg, 8 Nov 1722 16) Still in Watertown, the entry for James Whitney and Mary Hapgood should be John Whitney. 17) In Springfield, the entry for Rev. Josiah and Mrs Lois Breck should be shown as an *intention*, rather than definitive evidence that the marriage actually took place (although it is more probable that it did rather than that it did not). Sorry for the mistakes, folks. Most were probably mine in copying things from the screen to paper. Some may have been entered incorrectly in the process of transforming the information to electronic form. I do not have at hand the *book* from whence came the CT marriages I sent out, but if it turns up, I would appreciate someone checking the information I contributed and correcting any errors I might have made in that. In this work, we have been helped tremendously by Carolyn Vosburg's generous gift to the group of the Harvard, Worcester Co., MA Vital Records extract of all Whitney entries, as this family paused in Harvard for several generations. >From Richard and Martha through Moses and Sarah Knight Whitney we find the latter's son, Jonas Whitney and his (2nd) wife Margaret Stratton and their son, Jonas Whitney (Jr.) and his wife Zebuda(h) Davis. It is both before and after this point that some of the questions begin about data needed to fill out the records on the branch from Peg has sprung. So, we would like to pose these questions to the group for possible help. 1) There is some confusion in my files about where the children of Richard Whitney and Martha Coldham were born. If there is someone who has access to a collection of the early vital records of various towns in Middlesex Co., MA, perhaps they could check the VR and help settle the following questions. I have the following data from many years ago, and much of it is not sourced in my computer notes. I would have, somewhere in old boxes of saved notes, sheets with Whitney listings from library visits many years ago, and I could go back and dig through them if absolutely necessary. But, since these are not my own lines, there is a good possibility of the sources being scattered in bits and pieces. Here's what I have on Richard and Martha's children: 1) Sarah, b. 16 Mar 1651, Watertown 2) Moses, b. 1 Aug 1655, Watertown [something wrong with these two dates, 3) Johannah, b. 16 Jan 1655, Watertown which are only 5 & 1/2 mo. apart] 4) Deborah, b. 12 Oct 1658, Concord 5) Rebecca, 15 Dec 1659, Concord or Watertown 6) Richard, 13 Jan 1660/61, Watertown 7) Elisha, 26 Aug 1662, Concord or Watertown 8) Ebenezer, 30 Jun 1672, Concord or Watertown A guess about the note above, which is just that and nothing more, might be that some transcriber of a transcription saw the date for 3) Johannah as 1656 and, believing that the first transcriber had not known how to deal properly with the Jan 1 to Mar 25 dates, "corrected" it back to 1655. OR, conversely, someone "corrected" a January 1654 date to 1655 (again) after it had already been corrected, making the birth actually 16 Jan 1653/4. Obviously, a check of the Watertown VR for these births would help, and the above is a very good argument for using double dating. (Anyone who would like a more detailed explanation about this, see Val Greenwood's _Researchers Guide to American Genealogy_ or drop me a note for my version). 2) As shown above, I have son Moses Whitney born in Watertown (although Peg says Concord, MA), and he and Sarah Knight (of Cambridge) were married in Stow. When he died, he was listed as *Of Sudbury* (which is on the old Boston Post Road to Marlborough, the present US 20, and is both south and slightly east of Stow). Their first child, Sarah, is listed in my records (source unknown) as having been born in Stow, and the second, Moses (Jr.), as having been born in Sudbury. The question is, where were their next six children, including his son Jonas born? I have tended to assume Sudbury on the basis of the birth of Child #2 there and the father, Moses, being *of Sudbury* when he died, but the VR of Sudbury would help confirm this. Peg Sanborn, has Jonas listed as having been born in Stow. I'll tackle the problems with the next couple of generations in my next letter, as I want to get this out while you may have time to look into it over the weekend. BTW, did anyone come up with an answer for Ron and Marsha Bokleman's Joseph Whitney, b. ca 1740? I found a Joseph born in 1743, but that was in Pomfret, Windham Co., CT, (and that Joseph's marriage in 1780 that I had could well have been his second, of course). I asked Marsha and she said that she had no other information about place until Palmer Whitney, b. 1778 in Warwick, MA. Finally, here's another interesting problem - has anyone in the group ever heard of a Chloe Berry Whitney, who may still be living. The exchange reproduced below is fairly self-explanatory. In a couple of cases, their responses cleared up a couple of points, and then raised others. This will answer some of the questions they raised, and ask the rest of you to join in if you can contribute to solving one or more of the problems. First of all, on the question of WHERE all the children of Richard and Martha were born, Marion Leska came up with William Barry's "History of Framingham", which includes Sudbury, and which said that all of the children were born at Watertown. However, that source had a date of birth for *Sary* of Oct., 1653, rather than 16 Mar 1651/2. It also did not show Ebenezer, the *ten-years-later* child, born 30 Jun 1672, as a child of this family. In the part about Richard Sen. (father OR son), it had to be the son, Richard, born 13 Jan 1660/61 who died in 1723 at Stow, as Richard the father, born in England, died 20 Sep 1719 in Concord, Middlesex, MA (source not cited, does anyone have the VR for Concord?) I would feel a lot better about these if someone would have access to the Watertown VR for Births, and could confirm them in that primary source. Jan Whitaker came up with a different, but still secondary, source: "Stow, Massachusetts 1683 - 1933 compiled in honor of The Two Hundred and Fiftieth Anniversary of the Town" published by Rev. and Mrs. Preston R Crowell. It showed that there were eight children, "born in Watertown", and listed all eight that I had (including the elusive Ebenezer) with the years of birth only, not the full dates, plus the parenthetical comment about Elisha as follows "(didn't he go to Conn.?)". It further said of Richard that, [Quote} "He became a freeman [AEG - would have to have been Watertown] May 7, 1651. ... He became a "Proprietor of Stow" June 3, 1680. Moved there when it was "the plantation beyond Concord". April 7 1697, we read, Richard Whitney of Stow, being 70 years of age, was released from training, by the Court." [End quote] Apropos the matter of double dating, we really need to see the original version of the Marriage Records of Watertown, to settle the matter of the date of marriage of Richard Whitney and Martha Coldham. The Bailey book, and thus the on-line transcription of that that I published just two weeks ago, and which came from that same source, shows the marriage as 19 Jan 1650, but I have the date in my records as 19 Mar 1650. I THINK I got that date from an *absolutely true* copy of the Watertown records that said "1st mo." What is needed here is to find again a source for the original record that does not *clean up* the "archaic" forms of some of the entries, and see if it actually said Jan(uary) or <1st mo(nth)>, which at that time would have been March. Lets see if we can find a volunteer to locate and transcribe all the Whitney records (births, marriages and deaths) in the Watertown Vital Records exactly as they appear, warts, archaic spellings and all, just like Carolyn Vosburg did for the Templeton and Harvard VR's.. I wish Peg Sanborn had sent her answer to the list, rather than just to me, as she told of a trip up into Maine to search for a book on the Whitneys that she had seen in a bookstore once previously. It had been sold, but her description of her trip and passing through the town of Cape Porpoise, ME, where her great-uncle, Dr. Ray Whitney, had lived many years ago, and where she had fond memories of summer visits to his big old Cape Cod house on the ocean, complete with a family ghost. It was wonderful, and I hope that she will be willing sometime to share these memories with all of us. It put me in mind of the evening I spent dining at the Whitneyville Inn on Whitneyville Road in Cascade Twp., Kent Co., MI. It was a "Coaching Inn" built by some of my ancestors in the 1840's, and had upstairs a "floating dance floor" in the ballroom that was mounted on springs, so the rhythmic vibration from the vigorous dancing would not cause the joints in the structural wood joints to loosen. The food was pretty good, I guess, but I was so busy looking at and thinking about the family history in the place, that I probably didn't notice (and for me, as much as I love good food, that was something). You asked about the question of Thomas Whitney's challenged parentage, and very flatteringly said that you would not believe it until you heard it from me. Well, you have now heard it from me. I have read very carefully the two articles in The American Genealogist on the matter of Thomas' ancestry, the first in 1933 by Donald Lines Jacobus, one of the most respected of American Genealogists and teachers, and the second in 1994 by a Paul C. Reed, identified as a professional genealogist from Salt Lake City. Both make a fairly compelling argument, Reed referring back to the earlier Jacobus article. Based on their analysis, which I can't disprove, and which I have to say is very logical, Thomas is very unlikely to be a son of Robert Whitney and grandson of Sir Robert and Sybil Baskerville. There is one avenue of exploration that I have deduced that is not mentioned in either of their articles, and it may well prove to be of no value at all. If you ever checked this family out in the LDS database called Ancestral File, you would have found that Thomas was given in that source as having been born in a place called Lambert Marsh in Surrey. Every effort to find such a place has been fruitless, even with the resources of the Library of the British Society of Genealogists in London, where I spent nearly two weeks last summer. However, right across Westminster Bridge from St. Margaret's Parish, the residence of Mary Bray, Thomas' wife, is an area (which IS in Surrey) known as Lambeth. A low lying part of this community, which was a *suburban* village or town in the 1500's, is known as Lambeth Marsh, and that area is about a mile from the Abbey (Westminster) grounds, where St. Margarets is located and where Thomas and Mary Bray were married in 1583. At the estimated time of Thomas' birth in the early 1560's, there was only one parish in Lambeth, Lambeth St. Mary, so if he was actually born there, then his birth should be in that parish register (which was begun in 1539). Unfortunately, this is a parish whose records have not been copied and made generally available. The original registers have been deposited at the Greater London Record Office (since Lambeth has been for centuries a part of greater London). I considered taking a side trip over there this summer, but it was a bit awkward to get to, and at that time I had no idea of the controversy about his birth. So, I decided to spend the time at the Society Library and skip that visit which I figured would take at least half a day or more. Boy, do I regret it now. However, all is not completely lost, because Arvy Whitney is leaving in just a few days for a 10/day to 2 week trip to England, and he has promised to take the time to go to the GLRO and look up the records of Thomas birth, which will hopefully include the names of his parents. If they are there, then we may even find the parent's marriage, with information about their origin. That would be the absolutely most hoped for result. We'll probably get much less, and may actually get a negative answer, i.e, there was no record at all of Thomas or parents. Arvy, if you are reading this, I hope you will find and copy any and all Whitney entries of any kind between the beginning of the register in 1539 and the late 1500's, although I do know your time is somewhat limited. That, in a very large nutshell, is where the matter stands right now, as far as I am concerned. Until I can prove otherwise, I must accept the arguments of Jacobus and Reed. If they are correct, then we'll just have to find our way back to the Hereford Whitneys via another familial path. The thought has been advanced that Thomas may have sprung from the Cheshire branch of the family. If so, there are sources that can be located and consulted - Cheshire has a rich lode of source material, I've just never looked in it for Whitney lines because I didn't think I had a need to (until I started trying this summer to help the descendants of Henry Whitney of CT find his origin in England). Apropos your question about the ancient Green ancestry, I am far less familiar with the material since my own Green line has stopped in 1816 in Franklin Co., MA for more than twenty years. I do think that the line from John de Boketon down to the Greens of Rhode Island is pretty well documented, but I've never "checked it out" myself. Now, if only someone will find Henry's origin, and start in on the English ancestry of the Bermuda/Virginia Whitneys, we may eventually get back to the point of one common ancestor for all of these lines. Remember, the Whitneys were very good at finding rich daughters of important families that had no male heirs, which is how they got spread around in Hereford and Gloucestershire - the same thing probably happened in Cheshire as well. These passages, along with the copy of"Stow Leg" compiled by Perkins for Stow Historical Society, will help to untangle the mystery of borders of towns. It may seem that some of your Whitneys have moved, when in fact they stayed put and boundaries changed! I was just going to provide a few simple definitions, but as I got into it, it occurred to me that if she needed to ask, she needed more than just LDS = Latter Day Saints. So, the project got a bit more complicated and I decided that there might be one or two others who might be shy about asking the same questions, and decided to send the answers to the list as a whole. I guess I am applying the criteria that if the answer seems to be useful to more than one person, then it should be sent to the list - criteria which I wish other lists used more carefully. LDS - Latter Day Saints. The full name is Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, i.e. the Mormons, so named for the Book of Mormon, which tells of the Latter Day Saints, discovered (I think this is right) by Joseph Smith, founder of the church. FHC - Family History Center, a genealogical library and research center, found in most Mormon Churches. Open to the public and staffed by volunteers from the church, the local version of which is often called a Stake. It is a religious duty of members of this church to do genealogical research so as to extend the sacrament of baptism by proxy to one's ancestors, thus making them a part of the extended family in the church. The main LDS FHC is in Salt Lake City, and is without a doubt the greatest genealogical library in the world. I have been lucky enough to spend a week there doing research on two occasions while travelling out west. I can't begin to catalog their holdings, but the microfilm collection of records throughout the United States and the (mostly Western) world is nothing short of fantastic. The best way to find out what is available is to look up the Latter Day Saints Church in the phone books in your area - there is probably one within fifty miles or less. Call and ask about their open hours. Make a visit, introduce yourself to the librarian or volunteer and ask for an overview. Be sure to bring some work with you, as you will kick yourself if you don't have your folders with you. (this is assuming that the computers in the library that are set up to explore AF & the IGI are not fully booked - most FHC libraries have little actual material at hand, but do have the full catalog of the main SLC center of the FHC system. You find what you want to look at and then they will order it for you. It comes to the local FHC by mail, and stays there for you to use [there] for several weeks, on the microfiche or microfilm readers that they provide. Computers can be used to search the resources that are published on CD's) I wish I could be a little fly on the wall to watch your pleasure when you discover the resources available to you through this medium. AF - Ancestral File. A collection of pedigrees with some data, notes and other information attached. Many of them go way back into Medieval times. They consist of material submitted by church members as a result of their research, and others who have contributed their own files and work to preserve it and extend all our knowledge. The problem with it is that some of the data was contributed by people who were less than rigorous, much less careful, in their research, who accepted rumor, who jumped to conclusions, or just were sloppy and copied wrong. A case in point is the attribution of Lambert Marsh, Surrey, as the birthplace of Thomas Whitney, John's father. There doesn't seem to be such a place anywhere in Surrey that I can find in modern or historical gazetteers, yet there is a place about a mile from the parish where Thomas' wife Mary Bray was located called LAMBETH Marsh. Arvy is checking the Lambeth Parish Registers for me while he is in London this next week. If he doesn't find it, the AF record may then suggest but not prove that he was "OF" Lambeth Marsh at the time of his marriage to Mary Bray, but not originally born or christened in that parish. The Ancestral File database now runs to over 4 CD's full of data - may even now be five or six - and that is a LOT of data. These CD's are available at any FHC in most LDS churches - and in many public libraries that cater to genealogists. They are in the Allen Co., (Ft. Wayne, IN) Public Library, and I have used them at the Library of Congress as well. IGI - International Genealogical Index. Created and maintained by the LDS Church, it contains data from various public records, including many but not all British Parish Registers, and as of the last time I heard it cited, over 30,000,000 names and entries, probably many more by now. The problems with it are similar to those discussed with AF above, but if you know *something* about what you are looking for so you can sort out the wheat from the chaff, you can get a lot of good data and pointers to data from it (remembering always that original sources then need to be rechecked to confirm [or sometimes invalidate] what is found there). SLC - Salt Lake City, the headquarters of the LDS Church and site of the main FHC. NEHGS - New England Historic Genealogical Society. Located, I believe, in Boston, it may be the oldest such organization in America. It publishes a journal that goes back around 150 years, and has an extensive library. The library catalog of materials that will circulate by mail to members can be accessed on-line via the Internet at <http://www.nehgs.org/circcat.htm> (without the < & >). They also have published the entire set of back issues of their journal on a set of CD's, of which Jeanne Muse owns a set, I believe. Many of the abbreviations are the same for all, but if someone wants to view church or county records or grave stones, the codes vary. For instance in Stow: G.R.1 refers to grave record, from Old Cemetery at "Stow Lower Village" and G.R. 2 refers to grave record from Hillside Cemetery, M.R. refers to Middlesex County record, East Cambridge. In Shirley, there are four Cemeteries referred to , R.R. is a Rebellion Record( suspect that means Revolutionary War) and S.C.F. is Suffolk Court Files, and T.C. is town copy. Harvard has three church record codes and one is in the Still River section of the town. That helps to identify a person(with so many duplicate names to contend with). I have also found it helpful to copy the page near the front that explains the steps in becoming a town,often a complex series of steps and helpful for following people. His name is found in the Massachusetts rolls and he is described as from Harvard, a farmer with dark complexion, 5 feet 11 inches tall. Served first with Captain Joseph Moore's company, from Groton, Colonel William Prescott's regiment, in the earlier part of the war. He married October 31, 1765 Keziah Farnsworth, who died June 26, 1827, at Norway, Me. They had 2 daughters, Mary and Annis a son is also mentioned but no name is given. Mary , born May 15, 1766 married Richard Bryant. Annis was born February 13, 1785 and married James French, Jr. I have more information on the military record of Phinehas at the battle of Bunker Hill if anyone would like that. Most of the information I have is on the Whitney families in Maine and some of Massacusetts. I noticed in one of the postings (not at my finger tips at the moment) you had been seeking a date that I had already located. She was named after her aunt, Sally Cutler, with whom she lived for some time in her girlhood, and who was desirous of adopting her as her own child, but to this her parents would not consent. She was seventeen years old when she went to Castine. When thirty-one years of age she married David Howe, Esq. of Castine, who was then a widower, his first wife having died the previous year, leaving no children. David Howe, the son of Joseph and Rebecca Howe, was born in Boston, March 25, 1759, and married there in 1780, Margaret Sumner. He resided in Boston until about the year 1795, when he moved to Castine, being then thirty years of age. He was brought up to the trade of a silversmith, but soon after going to Castine, engaged in mercantile pursuits, and continued an active business man until a few years previous to his death. For many years, both before and after his change of abode, he held a commision in the militia; for several years was postmaster at Castine, also Notary-Public and Deputy United States Marshall. For nearly twenty-six years he was a Justice of the Peace, and was an honored member of the Masonic fraternity, being a number of times reelected Master of Hancock Lodge at Castine. During the last few years of his life, he was mostly confined to the house, having lost the use of his limbs by a severe paralytic shock. Retaining his faculties to the last, he died at Castine, March 3, 1828, "peaceful and happy, in the firm belief of the final salvation of all mankind." He married Margaret Sumner, in Boston, May 3, 1780; and she died at Castine, Sept 14, 1807. He married second, Sarah Whitney, in Castine, Nov. 5, 1808. After the death of her husband, whom she survived nearly thirty years, Mrs Howe remained for some time at Castine, and then went to Lincolnville, to live with her son David Howe. One of seventeen children, she was the last survivor of her generation, and died at Lincolnville, at the great age of eighty one, Nov. 16, 1857.
