Aloha gang,

I'm originally from the area near Fredonia, NY and am a member of the Chautauqua
Co Genealogical Society. I can order hard copies of Fredonia Censor articles
thru them. Their group had done several volumes on genealogical information
from the local newspaper, the Dunkirk Observer, cemetery listings, and now early
school records for the county.. The editor will go to the local univiersity
library and make hard copies from microfilm newspapers. The cost is something
like $1 for the first one and .50 per copy thereafter.

Please let me know what articles you want and where to send them once I get
them.

I've been having problems swapping out my PC this past week so I won't be able
to check the email on a daily basis. I hope to get fully functional again by
this weekend.

Subject: Massachusettes VR's

WRG,
Yesterday at the library I got a hold of a list(on Microfilm) of MA
surnames, and what town Vr's to look in for their info. I was amazed at the
many different spellings for Whitney-16 in all as follows:

WHITENEY, WHITENNE, WHITENY, WHITNAY, WHITNE, WHITNEE, WHITNEY,
WHITNIY, WHITNY,
WHITTENEY,WHITTINE, WHITTNE, WHITTNEY, WHITTNY, WITNEY, WITTNEY

There are VR's listings for these spellings in 154 towns in Massachusettes.
Today I'm going to try to list each town, with it's various Whitney spellings.
This will be for my own personal use. It would be too long to send to the
whole group. This way instead of looking through each VR for listings, I'll
be able to go directly to the right town. This sould save a great deal of
time and energy.

At last check, of these 154 towns with Whitney(inc.various sp.)listings,
only 45 are either done or soon to be done. That leaves a lot left to do.
For this project to succeed, we need some help. If anyone wants to help,by
looking up,typing and sending out, I'd be happy to send the list out to
them, or to the group if OK. I do need to keep track of who's doing what so
work is not repeated. This project is going to be awesome when completed,
making Whitney research(in MA-anyway) a whole lot easier, especially for the
out of state cousins.

My second roll of film is back and includes a picture(not as good as I had
hoped for) of the whole Whitney compound in Harvard, also the following
Harvard gravestones:

Aaron Whitney,died April 13,1817
Anna Whitney,died July 16,1773 [w.of Aaron]
Anna Danforth, died Jan.21,1846 [d.of Aaron and Anna Whitney]
Abraham Whitney,died May 19,1784
Capt.Aaron Whitney,died Mar.29,1864 and Sally Whitney died June 9,1814
Daniel Whitney,died Apr.26,1874
Isaiah Whitney,died Jan.15,1841 and Mary Whitney[his wife]died Dec.5,1843
Lucy Whitney,died Dec.1,1864 [wid.of Abel Whitney]
Miriam Whitney,died Apr.30,1775 [d.of Jonas and Zebudah]
Moses Whitney, died Apr.25,1773 [only son of Aaron and Anna.]
Richard Whitney,died Sept.28,1835 and Mercy Whitney,died Aug.1,1836
Samuel Whitney1821-1895 and Sarah T Gardner[his wife]1824-1897, their children:
        Ruth 1864-1864; Estelle G.1851-1890; Jerome G.1855-1904;
        Clara S. 1857-1914.
Sarah Whitney,died.Apr.21,1773 [w.of Capt.Josiah Whitney]
Sarah Whitney,died July 4,1800 [w.of Abraham Whitney]
Susan H Whitney,died Sept.19,1848 [w.of Capt Aaron Whitney]

Some of the dates were difficult to read in the photos, so I cross
referenced them in the Harvard VR's. Believe it or not some were not even
listed in the VR's. If anyone is interested in any of these photos. I'd be
glad to send it.

Don't forget the variations WHIDNEY and WIDNEY. There may also be others.

A blessed New Year to you, cousins all.

I am redoing my Whitney notebooks and realized I have little information on
one of my direct line members. His name is Henry Whitney, 7th s/o Daniel and
Dorothy Whitney b. Dec 31, 1738 in Watertown, MA d. about 1788. He m. Hannah
Tombs January 5 1769. I would like to know who his children were in addition
to William Henry who is in my direct line. I would like to know anything you
might have about him and his wife, also. Thank you. Karen

I am afraid I have good news and bad news for you. The bad news is you have
the identity of your Henry wrong. The good news is that you don't lose any
of your research, since your Henry was really a son of that Henry's brother
Benjamin. The proof of this lies in the probate records of Middlesex Co., MA.

The estate of Dorothy (TAINTOR) WHITNEY, wife of Daniel, who died 7 Aug 1788,
aged 82 years, was distributed on 8 Oct 1790 [Middlesex Probate File #24638,
Dorothy WHITNEY]. The estate was settled on Simon WHITNEY [her son] to
distribute it to sisters Abigail, Joanna, Mary, Dorothy, and Lucy; brothers
Daniel, Joshua, and Elisha; surviving children of brother Benjamin, decd.;
surviving children of Henry, son of brother Benjamin, also decd., vizt.
Benjamin, Elizabeth, and Henry; surviving children of brother Israel, decd.,
vizt. Israel, Jemima, Mary, and Dorothy; surviving children of sister Grace,
decd., vizt. Daniel, Thomas, Leonard, and Grace.

This means, according to my reckoning, that the Henry WHITNEY born 3 Dec 1738
was dead, without surviving issue, on that date. On the other hand, there
was Henry WHITNEY, b. 8 Jan 1745/6, Watertown, MA, son of Benjamin and
Deliverance (-----) WHITNEY, and grandson of Daniel and Dorothy, who was
deceased on that date, leaving three surviving children: Benjamin, Elizabeth,
and *Henry* (who was your William Henry WHITNEY).

According to my records, this Henry WHITNEY was a cordwainer (a kind of
shoemaker)[Middlesex Probate File #24651, guardianship of Benjamin WHITNEY,
his son, 2 Oct 1788]. He married Hannah TOMBS, as you state above, 5 Jan
1769, Newton, MA [Newton Vital Records]. Among his children were:
   Benjamin, b. 10 Mar 1769, Watertown [Watertown Records 3:149], living 8 Oct
1790 [Middlesex Probate File #24638, Dorothy WHITNEY], non compos mentis
on 2 Oct 1788 [Middlesex Probate File #24651, Benjamin WHITNEY].
Elizabeth, b. after 8 Sep 1769, Watertown [Middlesex Probate File #24652,
Elizabeth and Henry WHITNEY], living in Dummerston, VT, 2 Oct 1788.
   Lydia, b. ca. 1773, d. 28 Dec 1776, Watertown, aged 3 years.
   Anna, b. ca. 1773, d. 27 Dec 1776, Watertown, aged 3 years.
   Hannah, b. ca. Jul 1774, d. 24 Dec 1776, Watertown, aged 17 months.
(William) Henry, b. after 8 Sep 1769, Watertown [Middlesex Probate File
#24652, Elizabeth and Henry WHITNEY], living in Dummerston, VT, 2 Oct
      1788.
Probably this is all the children, but there could conceivably have been
others who died young, before 1790. My guess is that the widow Hannah
(TOMBS) WHITNEY remarried a man who removed to Dummerston, VT, explaining
the fact that Elizabeth and Henry, minors, were living there on 2 Oct 1788.
Can you confirm or deny this guess?

This means that your line goes William Henry-7, Henry-6, Benjamin-5, Daniel-4,
Benjamin-3, John-2, John-1, rather than William Henry-6, Henry-5 (Daniel-4,
etc.). The same mistake is made by Henry Bond in his _Genealogies and History
of Watertown_ (1860), pp. 648-649, and probably by others. What does
Frederick Clifton Pierce have to say on this subject?

More bad news: I know nothing whatsoever about the maiden name or ancestry of
Deliverance -----, wife of Benjamin-5 WHITNEY, but would like to know. I am
interested in the parentage of Hannah TOMBS, too, if you know it.

Regards,

Robert

WRG,
I've spent the weekend entering data from the Index of Surnames in Early
Massachusettes(from printed source) Complited by, Evelyn C. Lane. Published
by Information Services, Inc. Copyright 1989.
This source list which various Vital Records books have listings for
Whitney(and variations)

A lot of people have written to me offering to help,in some way, to collect
data. Also some have requested various towns that are already completed.
What I'd thought I'd do is list for the group; 1.the towns that are completed
2.the towns that are "in the works"
3.the towns that need to be researched, copied, typed, etc.

If anyone would like a copy of a town completed,I would be happy to send as
an attachment, or snail mail if neccessary.

For those of you who have any Vr's that you would like to contribute, send
to either Allan Green or myself

For those who want to help. Thank you, but PLEASE let me know what VR's you
are doing,as soon as you know, so your work won't be duplicated. I will post
to the group an update of what's in the "works". I can imagine it would be
very frustrating to be typing away at some records only to find out it has
been done.
So that said, here goes!

1.Towns completed and available
ATHOL, BEDFORD, BELLINGHAM, BOLTON, BOXBOROUGH, BROOKFIELD,
BROOKLINE, CHARLESTOWN, CHELMSFORD
CONCORD, GLOUCESTER, GROTON, HARVARD, HOLLISTON, HOPKINTON,

WATERTOWN, WESTFORD, WINCHENDON

2.Towns that are "in the works"
ACTON, ASHBURNHAM, CAMBRIDGE, CONWAY, DUDLEY, DUNSTABLE,
GARDNER,
GRAFTON, LANCASTER,
LITTLETON, LUNDENBURG, NEWTON, PEPPERILL, SHIRLEY, TOWNSEND,
TYNGSBORO, WATERTOWN,
        WESTMINSTER

3.Towns needing to be done
        ABINGTON, AMESBURY, ANDOVER, ARLINGTON, ASHFIELD,
ATTLEBOROUGH,
BARRE, BECKET, BERLIN,
BEVERLY, BILLERICA, BOSTON, BOXFORD, BOYLSTON, BRADFORD(maybe part
of Haverhill), BRIDGEWATER,
BRIMFIELD, BUCKLAND, BURLINGTON, CANTON, CHARLEMONT, CHARLTON,
CHELSEA, CHESTER, COLRAIN, CUMMINGTON, DANA, DANVERS,
DARTMOUTH,
DEDHAM, DEERFIELD, DORCHESTER, DOUGLAS, DOVER, DRACUT,
DUXBURY, EASTHAM, EAST BRIDGEWATER, FOXBOROUGH, FRAMINGHAM,
FRANKLIN, GRANVILLE, GREENFIELD,
HANOVER, HARDWICK, HARDWICH, HINGHAM, HINSDALE, HOLDEN,
HUBBARDSTON,
IPSWICH, LAWRENCE, LEE,
LEOMINSTER, LEXINGTON, LINCOLN, LOWELL, LYNN, MALDEN,
MANCHESTER,
MARBLEHEAD, MARSHFIELD,
MEDFIELD, MEDFORD, METHUEN, MILLBURY, MILTON, MONTAGUE,
NANTUCKET,
NEW BEDFORD, NEW SALEM,
        NEWBURY, NEWBURYPORT, NORTHBOROUGH, NORTHBRIDGE, OTIS,
OXFORD,
PALMER, PELHAM, PEMBROKE, PERU,
PETERSHAM, PHILLIPSON, PRINCETON, READING, ROCHESTER, ROXBURY,
ROYALSTON, SALEM, SALISBURY,
        SANDISFIELD, SCITUATE, SHARON, SHELBURNE, SHREWSBURY,
SOUTHBOROUGH,

WEYMOUTH,
WILLIAMSTOWN, WINDSOR,
WOBURN, WORCHESTER, WORTHINGTON, WRENTHAM and YARMOUTH.

Please, if you take on one of these towns, make sure you copy the key in the
front of the book. Also please note the publisher.

Also to my cousins who have requested a copy of my pictures. I need to
know which ones you'd like, as these take some time to send across and
receive. When I get good at all this computer stuff, I'll try to put these
on a home page for all to enjoy. I hope I'm not being a pain with all of
this. Michael Whitney made a great suggestion of putting this all into a
database. Being a computer "dummy" I'm not sure what exactly this means,
but sounds interesting.

Thanks for the patience and encouragement,
Peg Sanborn

Re: Making VRs available

If someone can provide me with xerox copies of the pages of text of VRs I can
scan them into my computer and then copy them into email to all. I
understand database and if someone comes up with the criteria so we can cross
reference, I can do so and then it can be linked to the Whitney homepage?
This last step I have no idea how to do but I can get it to the database
point. I am enthusiastic about making as much information as we can legally
make available on the internet.

Let me know if this is a good, feasible idea. Karen

Greetings,

I've been playing around with a shareware program called Blazons which I
downloaded from the compuserve roots forum. It's a dos program which draws
family crests from a typed description.
The program prints out a full page crest with about the quality of the windows
paint program, but you can save it to a bitmap (or gif) and import it into
another file. At 2" high, it doesn't look too bad.

Anyway... It has a stock crest for Whitney which is a horizontal green stripe
with 6 vertical alternating yellow and red stripes ("Paly of six or and gules a
chief vert"). It's all greek to me.
I've never seen this design before, but have seen a Whitney crest which is
basically a checkered cross on a white shield and it prompts a few questions
someone may know the answer to.

1. Does anyone know what our Whitney crest looks like?
(Would this depend on the Thomas parentage issue?)
2. Is there a technically correct description this program would understand?
3. Is there a difference between a blazon and a crest?

Just wondering.

book he wrote. As far as the rest of your message goes, I better let our

Dear WRG:

With good help from Peg Sanborn, Jan Whitaker, Vickie Elam White, Michael
Whitney and Carolyn Vosburgh (and I hope to heaven I didn't forget someone),
we have made some corrections and additions to the two Assorted Towns we had
previously published, and also finished the third group, which I said would
be forthcoming soon. Most of the corrections were minor, mostly identifying
the reference symbols, providing page numbers for reference in the original
volumes and identifying the publisher of each collection. There were a
couple of additions of material previously omitted, usually from entries
found under a different spelling of the surname that had gone unnoticed, etc.

So, here are what is currently available in ASCII <.txt> file attachment on
request (as you all should know, we are not supposed to send attachments
through the list because it messes up some peoples mail really seriously)

Assorted MA Towns #1 - Bedford, Chelmsford, Gloucester, Groton, Holliston,
Hopkinton, Leicester, Medway, Mendon, Milford, Sudbury, Rutland & Westford.

Assorted MA Towns #2 - Athol, Bellingham, Bolton, Boxborough, Brookfield,
Brookline, Concord, Natick, Sherborn & Waltham.

Assorted MA Towns #3 (new) - Acton, Cambridge, Conway, Dracut, Dudley,
Dunstable, Gardner, Grafton & Newton.

Templeton and Harvard VR - 17 pp.

Stow VR - 11 pp.

Most of you will have noticed that Peg Sanborn has sent out half a dozen more
for me to collect and format, so there will be another Assorted (#4) upcoming
sometime soon. Each time we do one of these, we get a little better at
anticipating our needs for additional elements, and so we won't have to wait
for Peg to get a chance to return to the Library to look up one obscure
reference that I asked for. BTW, for those who were aware that Peg had been
at less than full speed of late, it is great news that she has been cleared
to return to work part time, with hopes of getting back to full time soon.
Of course, that will mean she won't have quite as much time to play in the
genealogical stacks at the library, but I'm sure that she's delighted to be
able to resume her regular work - even if only part time for now.

I have had some very helpful letters from John Whitney at Oxford about the
organization of further work on the English Whitneys. We are attempting to
ensure that we are on the same page in our efforts, while surveying the
ground and the available but as yet untapped resources to avoid duplication
of effort. If the necessary evidence is available and accessible, we will
find the link to put John and Elinor back in the bosom of the Hereford
Whitneys. Mal, I also hope that the process will lead us to Henry of CT - be
assured that we will all be looking for him as well.

Happy Hunting to all :-) Allan

Brenda and other interested parties,

The Vital Records were done town by town and there is little consistency in the
approach. Some, as in Shelburne, relied heavily on private records (P.R. #),
others stuck to town records, church records (C.R. #) and grave records (G.R. #
with the number indicating which cemetery). a. # y. indicates age at time of
death, ex. age 66 years.
The P.R. 14 referred to so frequently in the Shelburne records is described as
"Genealogical notes collected by W. O. Taylor, deposited in Arms Library,
Shelburne Falls."
While most towns used G. R. to stand for Gravestone Record, Sutton used GS (see
what I mean by little consistency). Usually there was a number after the GS, but
in the case of Catherine Whitney, in Sutton, it was omitted. Also Sutton did not
put the y. after the age at death as Shelburne did.
Brenda, you've raised an important point. All of us need to copy everything in
VR entry's. Although it would be impractical to try to copy the "key to
abbreviations" for each town, we should include the references so that a person
can go to the orignal and find out which cemetery or which private record
provided the information given. As I understand it, most towns did not give a
citation for information from the official town records but for most other
sources they did. In other words grave records, church records, and private
records were used to complement the official town records.

Bert

Hello Steve;

I attached a BMP file of the Whitney Crest as it appears in the Frontispiece
of Henry Melville's "The Ancestry of John Whitney". I imported it into
Microsoft Word and was able to see it fine.

The following is also from Melvilles book:

WHITNEY HERDALDRY
Thomas Fuller, in his famous " History of the Worthies of England" states
that the arms of Sir Robert Whitney , of Whitney, Knight, who was sheriff of,
Herefordshire in the first year of Richard 11. (1377), were "Az. a cross
checky or and Gules.”
How long these were borne by the family before that date, is not known, but,
from their nature, it is supposed that they originated during the early
crusades. The records of the various Herald’s Visitations, found in the
College of Arms and among the Harleian Mauuscripts in the British Museum
show that they remained unchanged till the emigration of John Whitney in
1635.

'The same authorities describe the crest that went with the arms as " A
bull's head, couped sa. armed arg. the points gu.”
Fairbairn’s " Book of Crests of the Families of Grreat Britain and Ireland,"
revised by Arthur Charles Fox-Davies, Edinburgh, 1892, gives the motto of the
Wliitijoys of Herefordshire as "Magnanimiter crucem sustino (gallantly uphold
the cross). It also indicates that all the Whitney families in Great Britain
have retained the original crest substantially unaltered; for example:
"'WHITNEY, Of Merton, Wexford, a bull's couped sa., the horns arg., the
points gu.
“Whitney of Cheshire, in Gloucester, same crest.
 "Whitney, of Hertfordshire, same crest.
"Whitney of Shropshire a bull's head sa. attired per fesse gu. and arg.

"Whitney, Benjamin, Esquire, of Upper Fitzwilliam street, Dubliti, Ireland,
a bull's head couped sa. armed arg., tipped gu. gorged with a collar chequy
or. and sa., and charged upon the neck below the collar with a cross crosslet
arg.

"FETHERSTON-WHITNEY, Edmund Whitney, Esquire, of Neopass, County Westmeath,
Ireland - 1, a
bull's head couped sa., horned arg., tipped gu., gorged with a collar chequy
arg. and gu. (for Whitney); 2, ail antelope statant arg., attired or. (for
Fetherston).”

The originals of the two colored plates, showing respectively the Whitney
arms and crest alone and a shield with sixteen quarterings, were prepared by
Charles H. Athill, Esquire, Richmond Hearld, at the Colleege of Arms, London.
The third plate, sixty.four quarterlings, showing, the impalement to which.
the great-grandparents of the emigrant were entitled, is the work of Mr.
Gildersome-Dickinson, of London and should be compared with a chart,
arranged by him, which appears as an appendix.

One other note. I've been reviewing the mountain of paper I have printed out
since Thanksgiving, going over messages and information etc.

Ron and Marsha Bokleman sent in info on children of JONATHAN WHITNEY and SARAH
HOLT. If I'm not mistaken, these children do not appear in our WHITNEY#11
database.

Jon Aston, am I right? If so, Ron & Marsha may want to send the info to Jon in

Hello everyone!

Back in June, Joan Hicks found something on one of her trips to the National

Revolutionary War Pension Files with attached court documents. It didn't help
me, but I'm passing it along to everyone just in case. This is the type of
thing that drives us genealogists nuts!

Here is a brief outline from her e-mail message dated 6/26/96:

Benjamin Hoar/Whitney
b. abt 1758?

5/l5/1777 Enlisted from Old York, Maine (still part of Mass. at that time) for 3
yrs. in a company commanded by Capt. Samuel Darby, 2nd Reg. Inf., Mass. line.
Honorably discharged at West Point (bad copy of discharge papers in file)

Changed his name & that of all his family members to WHITNEY via petitions thru
NY State Legislature - no reason given.

Included on the petition were:
Benjamin Hoar, himself
Abigail Hoar, his wife
His minor children:
Oliver Hoar
Polly Hoar
Abigail Hoar
His "adult" children:
Abel Hoar
Silence Hoar
(no ages or birth dates were included in file)

Places referenced on his petitions:
3/3/1815 - Cambridge, Washington County, New York
4/6/1818 - "of Washington County, New York" - age "upwards of 60"
8/16/1820 - "of Salem, Washington County, New York - age 62

In 1820 he says he is a shoemaker by trade but is unable to work due to
something wrong with his right arm and reduced vision.

Love to all!

WRG,

Here's a trivia question to which I don't have the answer to as yet. Was
Dunstable MA a part of NH at some point? The Vital Records for Dunstable
often say Dunstable NH. Dunstable MA is right along the NH border. Is it
the one and the same? Also does anyone know if the following towns are part
of MA. Or maybe a section of a bigger town? I just spent some time trying
to find out using a phone book, but had no luck. The ones in question are:
BUCKLAND, NEW SALEM, PERU, SANDIFIELD, WASHINGTON, AND WINDSOR.

Thanks,
Peg Sanborn

To Peg and the WRG:

Place problems are sometimes resolvable by consulting the following URL for
the United States Geological Survey's database of place names. Type in what
you want to search for and get back the answers, along with the possibility
of clicking on a request for a map of the area - which then can be enlarged
several times so as to almost get down to individual local roads.

Try it, you'll like it (and bookmark it as I have).

Whitney cousins,
Thanks to all of you who answered my "town questions" Here's another one
for you. I had a chance to FINALLY take a look through the completed VR's.
It has raised a few questions for me. One being this; Harvard Vital records
list the following Children for Nathan And Nancy Farwell; Nathan b.
3Nov.1816; Aelissa Alviira b.10 Mar 1820; Newton b. 22July 1820; Angelina
b.15Apr.1822; Julianna b. 13Nov.1824; Edwin b. 22Aug.1826; Mary Farwell
b.4Jan.1832; and Syrena[Cyrene]Adelia b. 22Aug.1834. Notice that Aelissa and
Newton were supposedly born 4 mths apart. My guess it's a typo, or do I
have the wrong child with the right parents, or the right child with the
wrong parents. HUH? Think I need some sleep!!!

In our efforts to "understand" the VR abbreviations it is well to bear in
mind the publications these records are in were produced.

It was a Works Projects Administration (WPA) program for
Massachussetts that was created under the guidance of the New England
Historic Geneaological Society. The object was to create a published form
of the Vital Records of Massachussetts. The records were broken down into
their logical divisions - towns. That was because there is where the
actual "Public Vital Records" were kept. However, this program was being
run by geneaologists not government workers so some extras were included.
To a geneaologist a vital record is also a grave stone, burial or
cemetery record, church records, or actual documents that are in a
collection or library. Thus, the variety of records included in the
publications. The actual (original) VR does not contain all the
references the published version does. One thing that is guaranteed - the
entries that are transcripts of the official VR are accurate. Even to
misspelled words. The published version is acceptable as a verifible VR.
The lack of consistency between the various volumes is basically
editorial license by the person who let the compiling team and how they
abbreviated the various sources they used. What is amazing is the actual
degree of consistent entries there are between the volumes. CR is Church
Record in all of them. GS or GR is a Grave Stone or Grave Record. Some of
the lesser used sources are a bit muddled but can be deciphered without
too much trouble.
Imagine, collected in one volume is the total of every VR a
geneology researcher would want to check for births, deaths, and
marriages. All without having to travel to several cemeteries, churches,
or courthouses. And, it didnt matter if the town hall burned in 1855; The
published set is so available it can be accessed somewhere in almost
every state in the nation.
  Now that was vision.

According to "Geneaologist's Handbook for New England Research" by Marcia
Wiswall Lindberg, C.G. Published by the NEHGS.

Dunstable was established in 1673 as an original town; that is it wasn't
part of any other town when it was formed.
Nashua NH is formerly Dunstable and was formed in 1746 and named in 1836.
>From 1642 to 1679 and 1690 to 1692 NH was governed by MA.

 NEW SALEM,
Formed in 1753 and is in Franklin Co.

PERU,
Formed in 1771 (was called Partridgeville until 1806) and is in Berkshire
Co.

SANDIFIELD,
Try SANDISFIELD - Formed in 1762, formerly No. 3 Plantation. Berkshire
Co.

WASHINGTON,
>From the Harwood Plantation (not Mt. Vernon - which is in VA) was formed
in 1777 and is also in Berkshire Co.

AND WINDSOR.
Another Berkshire Co town that was formed in 1771. Until 1778 Gageborough
until 1778.

But, they all are in MA.

Hope this data helps. As a point of note. The reference I used for this
is a very valuable tool and is available from NEHGS.

Hi Allan --

In response to your solicitation, here is the "dead end" in my
Whitney trail.

NAME: Joel L. Whitney
DATE: Birthdate unknown (about 1810); married Arathusa Sawtell on Aug.
 23, 1832.
PLACE: Somewhere in New York state; perhaps near the small town of
South New Berlin, NY
RELATIONSHIP: Joel is the great-great grandfather of my wife Patricia
Whitney Mathews.

The only child from this Joel-Arathusa union of which we are aware is
Hiram S. Whitney, my wife's great-grandfather. Hiram migrated from
New York to Missouri, and successive generations in this line have
ended up in California and Oregon. Our info on Joel, sketchy as it is,
comes from a family Bible. We don't know if Joel had siblings, nor
anything about his parents. We have no evidence of a connection to
all the Massachusetts Whitneys we're reading about here in the WRG,
nor have we established a connection to the John & Elinor tree. Of
course, if we ever do make the link, we can fill you and Jon in on
the kin in this branch since Joel.

Thanks for adding Joel in to your database of "lost" Whitneys.

Brea, California

Peg and Allan - I had the opportunity to do some research on my RICHARDSON
line of Dunstable - New Hampshire that is. At the time, I could not find it.
As I recall, what was Dunstable, NH was subsumed by Nashua, NH. Also, I do
not believe that the two Dunstables were regarded as equivalent communities.
I was able to find several of my connections utilizing the Nashua records.

To make my research worse, the LDS microfilm containing the oldest Dunstable,
NH records can be used only in SLC.

As I vaguely recall, there is a book on Old Dunstable. It is in the
Albuquerque Special Collections Genealogy Library and if anyone desires a
lookup, please let me know.

Jerry Harrison

This may have been a local, Massachusetts version of the WPA, but it was
not the Works Projects Administration set up by the federal government.
That occurred during the Great Depression, in the 1930's. Most of the
volumes of vital records of Massachusetts were produced in the 1900-1920
time frame. Some were published by the NEHGS, some by the Essex Institute,
some by Franklin P. Rice, and some by the towns themselves.

Ok guys, here's the updated list of Vrs that are completed or that are being
worked on.

The following are completed:
Abington, Acton, Amesbury, Andover, Ashburnham, Ashfield, Athol, Attleborough,
Barre, Becket, Bedford, Bellingham, Beverly, Bolton, Boxborough, Brookfield,
Brookline, Cambridge, Charlestown, Chelmsford, Chelsea, Concord, Conway,
Dana, Danvers, Dracut, Dudley, Dunstable, Gloucester, Grafton, Groton,
Harvard, Holliston, Hopkinton, Leicester, Medway, Mendon, Milford, Natick,
Newton, Rutland, Scituate, Shelburne, Sherborn, Stow, Sudbury, Sutton,
Templeton, Waltham, Watertown, Westford, and Winchendon. These, I have on a
floppy and can send any town as an attachment to those who are interested.

The following towns are being worked on:
Dedham, East Bridgewater, Foxborough, Framingham, Gardner, Granville,
Greenfield, Harwich, Hinsdale, Holden, Hubbardston, Ipswich, Lancaster,
Lawrence, Lee, Leominster, Lexington, Lincoln, Littleton, Lowell, Lynn,
Malden, Manchester, Marblehead, Marlborough, Medfield, Medford, Methuen,
Millbury, Newbury, Salisbury, Shirley, Tyngsborough, Westminster, and Townsend.

As you can see we're doing good. Most of these I picked up yesterday at the
library. Some Have been sent out to Jon Aston, Jerry Whitney, and Brenda
Nichols to transcribe. Bert Smith is doing a few towns as is Jan Whitaker.

Jan, I remember you saying that there was one town I thought you had, but
didn't. Do you remember which one it was?

Karen, I will be sending you a couple of towns to run through your scanner.

Again thanks to all who have helped, those mentioned above PLUS Allan Green,
Vickie White, Jeannie Muse, Carolyn Vosburg and Robert Ward, did I forget
anyone? I apologize if I did.

I will continue to sent the Vr's to the group as they are completed, If
that's OK. I stopped doing that a few weeks ago as someone was writing me
nasty letters about all the mail I was sending them. It must have been one
of the AOL people Michael was talking about, as I didn't have a clue who it
was. But then again, I'm clueless most of the time anyway!!!

Dear WRG:

No, I didn't find Thomas' father - darn it. But I did FINALLY get past the
technical problems that have prevented me from accessing AOL through the
Internet via TCP/IP instead of paying AOLnet the !@#%$#@! - $6.00/hr for my
access. There's a lot of neat stuff on the Genealogy Forum that I've never
had the chance to see before because I couldn't afford to stay online more
than the two or three minutes it took to upload and download my mail 2 or 3
times a day. Now I can pay them their $19.95 happily for my unlimited
access, instead of $9.95 for five hours plus $30.00 for the telephone charges
to use the five hours!!!

Peg - I see you have a new address. Hope this is an improvement for you.
Paul, I got your note. Be patient with me for a few days folks while I play
with my new toy, then I'll get back to work on the VR's.

My best wishes for Happy Hunting to all.

Allan

Allan & all: In reviewing your previous correspondence on the "puzzlers"
regarding Moses Whitney, son of Richard Whitney and Martha Coldam, I found an
error in your children listing.

Moses Whitney, b 1 Aug 1655 & married 30 Sep 1686 Sarah Knight, did NOT have a
son named John, but rather had a daughter named Rebecca.

Their daughter Rebecca Whitney married John Whitney, son of Isaiah Whitney and
Sarah Woodward. My source for this information is the NEHG Register, Vol 22
p118.

I also have a 2nd marriage for the above Moses Whitney. He married Sarah Gray
on 20 Nov 1766 (same source).

Thought I would put in my 2 cents worth! :-) Jeanne

I just uploaded VR's for Lynn. There were two Whitney/Rice marriages in that
record. I thought I'd call attention to it in light of the recent exchange.

To continue the discussion of abbreviations and lack of consistency:

The Lynn Vital Records use an asterisk after a marriage to indicate that the
intention WAS ALSO recorded. Other VR's use the asterisk to indicate that it
was NOT recorded. So watch out!

Howdy

Can someone answer these questions?

1. How reliable is the Melville book?

2. Is the Witney Woolen Mill in England connected at all with our Whitneys?

3. Does anyone have any sources concerning Thomas WHITNEY, b 18 Mar 1795 in
Westminster, MA? He is the son of Phinehas and Elizabeth (RAND)
 WHITNEY.

4. Does any one have any sources concerning Phinehas and Elizabeth (RAND)
WHITNEY? Phinehas--b 16 Jan 1761; m 13 Jan 1788. Left Westminster, MA abt
1812 and moved to Rutland Co., VT. Outside of his Rev. War pension papers, I
have found no record of him in VT. HELP.

5. Has anyone done the VRs for Westminster, MA? I'm interested.

Hi Guys,

This dead end is shared by myself, Lou Bradshaw, and Jo Ann Curbo. We've
gotten to:

Descendants of Samuel Whitney, Sr.

1 Samuel Whitney, Sr. b: Abt 1615 in England d: 1674 in Bermuda
. +Catherine d: Aft June 23, 1679
  2 Abigail Whitney
.. +John Lydell
  2 Elizabeth Whitney
.. +? King
  2 Francis Whitney
  2 Jeremiah Whitney
  2 Joseph Whitney
  2 Ketring Whitney
  2 Ruth Whitney
2 Samuel Whitney, Jr. d: September 22, 1722 in St. George, Bermuda
.. +Sarah
2 David Whitney b: Abt 1650 in Bermuda d: April 1707 in Bermuda
.. +Mary
    *2nd Wife of David Whitney:
.. +Martha

There is a written account of the death of Capt. Francis Whitney of England
in Bermuda in 1619. It seems very likely that this is Samuels' father. I can
find Francis listed many times in the records of the Virginia Company, who he
was employed by, but can't get any genealogical help from the records. The
only thing that the records might show is that considering how many meeting
he was at he must have lived in the area of the Virginia Company
headquarters.

Bye,
Michael Whitney

I seriously doubt whether this Moses WHITNEY remarried at the age of 111!
Actually, it was his great-grandson who contracted this marriage:

Moses-6 WHITNEY, b. 11 Jan 1747, Lunenburg, m. 16 Aug 1766, Petersham (or 20
Nov 1766, Lunenburg), Sarah GEARY or GARY or GRAY. He was son of Ephraim-5
and Jane (BANCROFT) WHITNEY (Moses-4, Moses-3, Richard-2, John-1).

Robert

Dear Sandy:

Hi. Nice to hear from you. I'll try to answer a couple, maybe others can
help with the rest.

1) The Melville book. Other than the apparent major flaw concerning the
father - son relationship between Thomas Whitney (b. 1563) and the man
Melville cites as his father, i.e., Robert Whitney, third son of Sir Robert
Whitney and Sybill Baskerville, I have found it to be fairly accurate. What
information that I was able to find in other sources bears out Melville, and
he cites a fairly significant number of sources that do show what he says
they did. He found no reliable source for Robert's birthdate, and from other
sources inferred that relationship. However, to the best of my knowledge,
from Sir Robert and Sybil back is pretty reliable (note that even here I am
qualifying slightly - I don't want to state categorically that he is
absolutely correct because we may find something next week or next year that
sheds new light on another connection).

Have you been keeping up with the discussion of the TAG article by Paul C.
Reed that pretty well proves that this cannot be so, primarily because of the
dates involved, the father Robert can't have been born early enough to have
been Thomas' father. So, for all of us descended from Thomas via John and
Elinor it's back to the research process to find a new father for Thomas.

2) The Witney Woolen Mill. Is that at Witney near Oxford? I was there this
summer (Oxford, I mean) and a brief check there did not find anything that
connected this Witney (and whatever people/family/whatever that it was named
for) to the Hereford Whitneys. This is not to say that a younger son
somewhere back in the 13th or 14th C. didn't leave and go there. Some of
them went to Cheshire, for example. I was not able to find any source in a
brief look that spoke to the origin of the name for the town in Oxfordshire.
Its parish records start in 1551. Perhaps John Whitney in Oxford could
contribute some information to this question.

5) The VR's for Westminster are in the works - Peg Sanborn has them, I
believe, but has not yet typed them in. They may be among those that she has
parcelled out to another volunteer. If she still has the photocopies in her
posession, she may respond to your posting herself.

Hope this has helped. Apropos the English lineage, I have high hopes that
with a lot of people cooperating, we can and will reestablish a link between
Thomas and one of the main branches of the Whitney family, but until then we
will have to shelve our links to a lot of the blue-bloods that appear in
Melville.

Allan

Greetings WRG:

Working on the answer to Sandy, I ran into these VR's that I copied from the
transcriptions in the Society of Genealogists Library last summer, to
supplement the ones I had found in the Registers themselves in the Library of
Westminster Abbey in 1982. At that time I copied only the ones directly
relating to Thomas and Mary Bray and their family.

29 Sep 1656, Penelope Whitneys

Final note from AEG. We seem never to have picked up on the idea of a second
wife for Thomas Whitney, named Margaret, as per the note above. That it is
the right Thomas with this wife Margaret is supported by the two sons,
Francis and Robert, who were the only ones still alive [in England, of
course, John was in Watertown by this time] in 1637 when their father died.
It didn't register with me even last summer as I was copying these records,
at a time when I could have easily searched Boyd's Marriage Index for a
second marriage for Thomas sometime after Mary died in 1629. The last child,
Frances, would have been still only 14, and (speculatively) Thomas seemed to
be a man who felt he had a place in society (c.f. being specified as "Mr."
and listed as "gentleman") that for him to seek the comfort of a second
marriage would probably have been fairly likely. If any of our English
cousins have access to a Boyd's, perhaps this could be investigated.

Happy Hunting!

Allan

Hi Sandy,
                   Melville; Witney wool mills
                   -----------------------------

I will try to answer your first 2 Qs:

>1. How reliable is the Melville book?

It is well-researched and all the ref. documents are authentic as far
as they have been checked. I have my own copy and I can vouch for the
parts where I have personal knowledge. Melville is quite good at
   stating where speculation is involved.

The big problem with the ancestry of John Whitney is the difficulty
with accepting that Thomas of Westminster is the son of Robert Whitney,
the third son of Sir Robt. Whitney. Melville gets this descent from
one of the Harleian MSS in the British Mus., but the dates don't make
sense. Otherwise the Melville book is a pretty good account of the
family. I agree with Allan Green's comments.

>2. Is the Witney Woolen Mill in England connected at all with our Whitneys?

NO! There used to be several wool mills at Witney in Oxfordshire,
which is very near where I live. Now there is one - Earlys of Witney,
who still make the famous Witney blankets. There is absolutely no
known connectin with the Whitney family - this includes the origin of
   the Witney town name.

Regards

John

Hi, Allan and WRG,

In Allans note he had the above statisic which caught my eye. If you go by
the normal convention that Francis is a male name and Frances is a female
name could this be the wife of my Capt Francis Whitney? Have these records
ever been plublished? Or copied by LDS? I'd love to be able to dig through
the whole group records.

Bye,
Michael Whitney

I am afraid that basing some research on the clue provided by the
difference in spelling of Francis and Frances is unwise. Spelling was
very fluid in the 17th century, even by educated people like the minister
or parish clerk of St. Margaret's. I think it virtually certain that this
refers to a female, who is designated "Mrs." (or Mistress) because of her
station in life, not because she was a married lady. It is similar to a
male being designated "Mr." (or "Master"), which indicated that he was of
a higher class than the ordinary workman (who would have been addressed as
"Goodman", and his adult female relatives "Goodwife"). Another indication
of this higher station in life is the word "gentleman", which didn't mean
that he was polite, or even gentle, but that he was of gentle birth.

Furthermore, the use of form "Mrs. John Smith" to indicate the wife of
John Smith was not in common use in the 17th century.

We are very lucky that Thomas Whitney, father of the immigrant John-1, is
found in the records as both "Mr." and "gentleman", for that surely
indicates that he was of the upper class, and records for him certainly
existed at one point. Whether they survive or whether we can find them
is another matter. Unfortunately, this fact led Melville to be sure that
this Thomas was related to the Whitney family of Whitney, Herefordshire,
since they were a prominent gentle family with that surname, when he found
the pedigree connecting the two families, which we now know to be highly
unlikely on chronological grounds.

I think it very likely that the Mrs. Francis Whitney who was buried 26 Aug
1643 was either Frances, daughter of Mr. Thomas Whitney, gentleman, and
Mary (Bray) Whitney, who was baptized 11 May 1615 at St. Margaret's,
Westminster, or else she was the widow of Capt. Thomas Whitney, gentleman,
buried 13 Jun 1621, St. Margaret's, who administered his estate 20 Jun
1621.

Regards,

Robert

OK folks,
Here I go again with an updated list of completed VR's, but first a
couple of things.

To Stan and Mary Lindsay-we will miss you, please keep in touch and don't
stay away too
        long.

Sandy Fahrnbrush-If you need a look up on the Westminster Vr's. Jan Whitaker
has those
in hand, waiting to be transcribed.

Jeannie Muse-Would you send me the birth/death/marriage info on the children
of Moses
Whitney and Sarah Knight-if you have them. All I have is the data
on son Jonas.

Jon Aston and Brenda Nichols-Your Vr's came through beautifully. I have
Marborough,Lowell, and Lincoln that are pretty long. Are you interested in
scanning one of them for me?

Jerry Whitney-Did you receive the Framingham photocopies I sent you? If you
didn't I'll
if necessary. If you did get them, no hurry.

Now for the fun part! The following VR's are now complete and available:
ABINGTON ACTON AMESBURY ANDOVER ARLINGTON

MARBLEHEAD MARBOROUGH MEDFIELD MEDFORD METHUEN
MILLBURY PEPPERELL TYNGSBOROUGH TOWNSEND WESTMINSTER

There are 64 more towns to pull from the stacks and photocopy, but we're
getting there.

Also Hardwick and/or Harwich I messed up on. I wrote one name on my notes
and labeled the Vr with the other name. I need to return to the library to
double check what's what. For all I know they may be the same town, but the
microfilm listed both.

Again thanks to all, and am sorry to keep repeating myself, but I always
find a few towns I've missed, when I do this!

Peg

Hi WRG,
These are the two addresses I could remember off the top of my head.
Anyway, I wanted all to know that my computer is down. I am upgrading,
updating, etc. Should be back up in a few days.
Haven't been able to do any researching for members of the group because my
CD Rom Drive will no longer work, so I have gotten a new one and am in th
e thro of replacement together with some hard drives.
I have been following what has been going on with the John to Thomas

book. W
e must come up with an answer.
Hey, Happy hunting as Allan would say.

Subject: My Whitney ancestors
Date: Thu, 23 Jan 97 11:26:11 -0600
Sender: [email protected]

Hi all.

I hope someone can help me with this. My mother's maternal grandmother was
Julia Ardelle Whitney. I have the family Bible that belonged to her
grandfather, John Whitney, Jr. (b. Apr. 8, 1783, d. July 3, 1839). It was
printed in Massachusetts in 1814, but John Whitney, Jr. entered what he knew
about his own ancestry into it. From birth, death, and marriage entries in
this Bible, I can trace my Whitney ancestry back as far as Elijah Whitney
(b. Jan. 7, 1716, d. June 22, 1792). Some scribbled notes say that Elijah
Whitney was the son of Daniel, son of John, son of John, "who emigrated from
Wales in England."

A couple weeks ago, when trying to find additional information, I found the
file WHITNEY7.ZIP on Compuserve. This led me to Jeanne Muse, WITNEY11.GED,
and the Whitney List. According to WITNEY11.GED, the descendants of John
and Elinor Whitney included a son John (born in England, emigrated to
America), who had a son John, who had a son Daniel born Dec. 3, 1681.
Daniel had a son Elijah born Jan. 15, 1714/15, and Elijah had a son John
born Nov. 29, 1749. The name sequence (John --> John --> Daniel --> Elijah
--> John) fits perfectly, and the note in the Bible about emigrating from
Wales was written at least 150 years after the fact, so it is fuzzy at best.
The problem is that the dates for Elijah Whitney and his son John don't
agree exactly with John Whitney, Jr.'s Bible (hereafter JWB).

For Elijah Whitney, we have birthdates as follows:

   WITNEY11.GED -- Jan. 15, 1714/15
   JWB -- Jan. 07, 1716

Except that both agree on early January, these dates seem irreconcilable.
That is, no simple date conversion error (or even pair of errors) can neatly
account for the date discrepancy.

The situation for Elijah's son John is better. The birthdates are:

   WITNEY11.GED -- Nov. 29, 1749
   JWB -- Dec. 09, 1749

If John Whitney, Jr. added 10 days instead of 11 to correct his father's
date of birth from O.S. to N.S., the dates would agree perfectly.

Unfortunately, I am a rank amateur at this business (I picked up a copy of
Family Tree maker at a discount store and started entering what I had). So
it is hard for me to judge the significance of discrepancies like these.
Perhaps someone can advise me here.

Small world/hazards of genealogy note: About a week ago, I posted a brief
note to the WRG, and I received a surprised (and surprising) email response
from my first cousin, Joanne Hogle, who (it turns out) also is working on
the family history and joined the WRG before I did! So, I invited her over
for dinner last evening to compare notes and coordinate efforts.
Unfortunately, it was snowing, and only a couple miles from home she got
caught in one of four -- yes, four! -- major pile-ups on the local freeways
last evening (*&#$@!! Minnesota winters)! She got out of it with a few
stitches and a lot of bruises, but her car probably is totaled. Anyway, it
is obvious that genealogy can be a dangerous hobby, and I'm suggesting that
she consider skydiving instead.

WRG,
Just a quick note about the Harvard House picture some of you requested a
while ago. Jan and I found out today by the curator of the Harvard
Historical Society that this house belong to a Cyrus Whitney NOT Moses
Whitney. The original information we got was very misleading, but what the
heck, We're only human. The historical society will be providing us with
locations of other Whitney houses in Harvard so when I can get those
pictures I'll let you all know. Sorry for the oops!
Peg

P.S
Karen, Brenda/Paul, and Jon I've sent out another town to each of you in
todays mail. Thanks!

Hi Bob,
re. family bible vs. VR dates
                   -----------------------------

I was interested to read your note. A thought occurred to me which would
certainly apply in the UK; I'm not sure about the US.

Birth and baptism dates are usually different, and occur in the obvious
sequence and with intervals which vary from a day or so to several years.

The .GED dates you quote are both earlier than the bible dates. Maybe the
.GED file gives the birth dates, and the bible gives the baptismal dates.

Just a thought!

John

P.S. I am copying this to the WRG since it might be of interest (I have not
      seen this point mentioned)

Sender: [email protected]

Jan Whitaker: I'm posting this to all of the group, so we can all check our
sources & maybe come to a conclusion here.

Earlier I posted a message to the group:
"In reviewing your previous correspondence on the "puzzlers" regarding Moses
Whitney, son of Richard Whitney and Martha Coldam, I found an error in your
children listing.

He married Sarah Gray
on 20 Nov 1766 (same source)."

Jan wrote me in response:
"I am anxious to see the Register and learn of its's sources.
John of Lancaster, Harvard, and Shirley, who married Rebeckah of Stow, at
Lancaster on May 20, 1724,by John Houghton, JP(Listed in both towns VR's)
is my ancestor. They produced Sarah , John Jr. Beulah, Ezra and Abner.
Abner was my ancestor. Although I have yet to find John's birth location
or date, I have evidence of his life and accomplishments and am closing in
on his death date and location of burial. I have never seen a daughter
Rebeckah listed as a child of Moses and Sarah Knight anywhere. I live
close to these towns and have visited their libraries and viewed some of
their historical papers. This Thursday Peg Sanborn and I will meet with
the curator of the Harvar Historical collection and she is prepared to
present all the information on the Whitney's there( their number was
considerable, as are the houses). I do hope that I will come closer to the
truth. Jan"

First -- Change the above Vol to #11 (sorry..typo) p118.

Basically, the NEHG Register printed in 1857 contributions to the society
addendums to Bond's work, signed simply with the initials H.A.W. On p118 under
the children of Moses Whitney and Sarah Knight is listed this entry:

? John, of Lancaster; parentage unknown, suppose of this line. married Rebecca
Whitney, of Stow, May 20, 1724.

Rebecca is not listed as a child in this source

John & Rebecca's marriage is printed again in Vol 17 p72 as a recording of the
Lancaster marriages by John Houghton, which you referenced above.

I have John Whitney's birthdate as 6 Dec 1698 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, son
of Isaiah Whitney and Sarah Woodward. My notes on John's birth information:
PIERCE!

So...looks like I may have gotten this from Pierce. JON ASTON -- could you look
up this one in your copy of Pierce? Of course, we all know that there have been
errors in Pierce, and we are continually attempting to confirm his writings with
documentation. But it was a good start for me & continues to help establish our
links to John & Elinor.

Anyone else have info to add? Thanks!

:-) Jeanne (Whitney) Muse

Hi, just a quick comment. If Moses was born on Aug. 1 1655 in order for
him to have married a 2nd ( to Sarah Gray) time on the given date of Nov
20 1766 he would have been 111 years old!!! I know we are a hardy bunch
but that is still pretty remarkable!!

H. A. W. was Henry Austin-8 WHITNEY, b. 6 Aug 1826, Boston, MA, son of
Joseph-7 and Elizabeth (PRATT) WHITNEY [Joseph-6, Samuel-5, Benjamin-4,
Thomas-3, Thomas-2, John-1]. His memoir was published in the _NEHGR_,
vol. 45, pp. 175-182, and it mentions on p. 180 that he was author of
the article in queston.

Bond does not list any children for Moses-3, and for Isaiah-3, he lists
the following seven: John, Isaiah, John, Nathaniel, Sarah, Elijah, and
Jonas, with no dates or further information for any of them. Note two
Johns and no Rebecca. I would suggest that Lucius R. Paige's _History
of Cambridge, Massachusestts, 1630-1877, with a Genealogical Register_
(1877), and the Supplement and Index to the same by Mary I. Gozzaldi
(1930), should be examined. This could be the source of Pierce's
statements. I have not seen these sources myself, and would be quite
interested to see what it says about any WHITNEY person.

I have not found any source for this date other than PIERCE. It is a
plausible date, so may be correct, but there is no evidence for it at
present to the best of my knowledge. Moses-3 WHITNEY left no probate
records in Middlesex Co., MA, as far as I can determine, and the
administration of the estate of Isaiah-3 WHITNEY mentions no children,
only the widow Sarah. Of course this is not unusual for administration
records.

It may be that this date is taken from some church records in Cambridge
which were not included in the published Cambridge Vital Records.

Dear Jeanne, Bingo! You solved my puzzle! Thanks for the lead. I spent the
PM in Harvard Library with Pierce and town histories and realized that
John, in fact is the son of Isaiah (Thomas, John) and Sarah Woodward, b. 6
Dec.1698 in Cambridge (I have an inkling that Cambridge Farms was actually
part of Lexington, will check tomorrow). Now how do we solve the puzzle of
who Rebeckah was? Has anyone ever seen the Vital Records for any of Moses'
children? Now, after viewing your Homepage I see that you are seeking an
elusive John too. I have some info on John of Lunenberg for you and some
leads. This was a great day-and I won 3 months free service on my server,
too(just for answering a survey). May the Patriots have such good luck
tomorrow!!! I will follow up on this Monday, Thanks again. Jan

I am writing to complain that genealogical information on living people
are being held in two different places:

  (http)://www.rootsweb.com/~gumby/genweb/Whitney/Whitney.html
  (http)://msrad3.med.uth.tmc.edu/holmgen.html

I find this discussion group VERY useful for research, but this
publication is closing on an invasion of privacy.

I found my name, and my gene line via Alta vista. It surprised me. I
have now withdrawn my GEDCOM file from GenServ, and am feeling rather
incensed.

Please - this medium is so valuable let's not abuse it.

Hello,
Special thanks to Jon Aston, John Whitney, and Allen Green for helping with
my queries. I'm in the middle of reading the Melville book, but some of the
joy is gone since there is a problem with linking Thomas and Robert. Are a
number of people working on solving that probelm? Is there something I can
do? I've never done any non-American research, but I'll be going to SLC in
March/April.

Does anyone know of a color picture of the "Whitney of Whitney" Coat of Arms.
Thanks, John, for sending the crest to me via download.

Does anyone know of the marriage of John WHITNEY (b. 25 July 1793 MA), son of
Phinehas WHITNEY (b. 16 Jan 1761 MA)? I have a John WHITNEY marrying a Sarah
CHAPMAN in Washignton Co., OH, 1 Mar 1821. The problem is that I also found a
John WHITNEY marrying a Sally CHAPMAN (no date), probably in Washington Co.,
OH. If the 2 CHAPMAN women are the same person and if this John WHITNEY is
my WHITNEY, then this line is related to John (Appleseed) CHAPMAN. Appleseed
 is Sally's half-brother.

Thanks
Sandy

I have the crest all colored in, using one I borrowed from my son and
the one that John sent us via e-mail...I used paintbrush and it looks
pretty good....now I am trying to find out how to put it on my home page
so everyone can see it and download it if they want it. I will let you
all know as soon as it is available....soon I hope.
