I, too, had a horrible time getting the exe expanded and working. Probably more than most as I just barely know the basics of windows and don't know enough to download from Randy Winch's ftp site. I did try thru my browser and it looked good for awhile but quit with an error message. In case there are others who like me don't know much about windows. Here is what I did. From my email program (Pegasus mail) I saved the witney12 as a file to C:/temp/. Then I went to the run in file menu while in file manager. Then I tried importing it to PAF 3.0 with the same problem that others have had. It stopped after 7/8 of it was added and gave me an error message. So at this point I decided to try the old faithful Paf 2.31. I tried adding it from it's place in C:\temp but Paf didn't recognize it. So I copied it to C:\paf and then added the witney12.ged from the gedcom menu like any other gedcom and it worked! Except the notes or sources are no good. It just says not recognizable or too long like so many imported gedcoms do. Does Robert Ward have any plans to put this on his web page with the sources? Hope so. A web friend of mine has this in her Bissett family and has heartedly agreed to let me share it with you: BISSETT, ELIJAH (1813-1877) b. Waterborough, Queens or Carter Point, Kingston(parish), Kings (CO.) NB. Died 1877 Bell Line Father; BISSETT, WILLIAM (1771-1849), Mother: WELDON, ELIZABETH (1787-1868) Spouse: DODD, JANE LOUISE(1816-) Child: WHITNEY, PERCY(1846-) When a very young man, Elijah wanted to go to sea,so he changed his name to CHARLES THOMAS WHITNEY (two of his brother's names) for fear his parents would stop his going. Afterwards he married an Englishwoman in England-JANE LOUISE DODD. A few years before 1877, he came to St. John(NB) with his wife and four children-2 boys and 2 girls- as captain of one of the largest sailing ships at that time and visited relatives and friend. Having his name changed by law, he could not change it back. Upon arriving here he met a Mr. John Fisher, shipbuilder, who directed him to his people. He, with his family, then went to New York to live. There he bought a ship and with cargo, sailed to St. Thomas. On the way, there was one officer short,so he promoted one of the seamen to second mate. For some reason, the captain and second mate disagreed and Captain Whitney was murdered and thrown overboard. The crew refused to give any evidence. In 1931, the family was still living in New York. A son, PERCY WHITNEY, lives(1931)in Richmond, VA. In 1927, Percy married his secon wife,his cousin,ELIZABETH RAY, daughter of Margaret(his father's sister). She died in 1929. He married the third time in Richmond, VA. All this told by Mary Ann Bissett to her daughter Alice Mary Barbour. I hope this helps someone solve a mystery, if not, it's a good tale! Cheers. Dear WRG, The intentions of marriage of John WHITNEY and Beria PEIRCE "of Waltham" were recorded on Sept. 28, 1754 in the _Town of Weston. Births, Deaths and Marriages, 1707-1850_ (1901), p. 89. The marriage of John WHITNEY and Beria PIERCE "of Waltham" was recorded on Nov. 28, 1754 in the same reference, p. 92. In the _Vital Records of Waltham, Massachusetts, to the Year 1850_ (1904), is recorded the marriage of John WHITNEY "of Weston" and Beria PEIRCE, Nov. 28, 1754, in Weston. The question arises, who were this couple? The identity of the bride is not hard. Her death is recorded in Waltham as "Beriah, widow of John WHITTNEY of Weston, formerly widow of Daniel CHILD", in her 88th year, on Nov. 4, 1768, from her tombstone in Grove Hill Cemetery, Waltham. On 11 July 1755, she had made her will. An abstract of the will is as follows: Will of Beriah Whitney of Weston; "I having before marriage to my present husband Mr. John Whitney made an agreement with each other to have the Dispositions of our Estates separate ..."; estate to be divided among her children and the children of her deceased daughter Sarah FISK, to wit: Daniel CHILD; David CHILD; John CHILD; Samuel CHILD; Elisha CHILD; Susanna CHILD; Elizth. STEARNS; Mary WHITNEY; Joshua CHILD; granddaughter Sarah MIXER; grandson Danll. FISK, under 21; granddaughter Beulah FISK, under 21; witnesses Ebenr. CUTLER, Jonas CUTLER, Abijah CHILD. (_Middlesex County Probate Records_, File #24612) Her inventory was taken in Weston on Nov. 4, 1768 by Capt. Ebenezer CUTLER, Capt. Bradyll SMITH, and Mr. Jacob BIGLOW. Her will was proved 13 Dec 1768 in Weston. In Weston, on May 31, 1769, the heirs agreed to the executor's account, signed by David, John, Joshua, Samuel, and Susanna CHILD, Isaac STEARNS, Joseph WHITNEY, and David FISK. On 28 Nov 1769, her inventory was exhibited and the executor's account was presented (_ibid._). This information is sufficient to identify Beriah PEIRCE as Beriah BEMIS, daughter of John and Mary (HARRINGTON) BEMIS, born June 23, 1681, Watertown, MA. She married firstly, Feb. 10, 1701/2, Watertown, MA, Daniel CHILD, who died 29 Jan 1723/4, Watertown. She married secondly, as his third wife, Aug. 12, 1736, Watertown, MA, Joseph PEIRCE, who died Mar. 13, 1753, Weston, MA. Fine, but who was John WHITNEY? Three possible solutions have been proposed in various sources: A. John-5 WHITNEY, b. 22 Jun 1714, Watertown, MA, son of John-4 and Sarah (CUTTING) WHITNEY [Joseph-3, John-2, John-1]. B. John-4 WHITNEY, b. 15 Jun 1694, Watertown, MA, son of Benjamin-3 and Abigail (HAGAR) WHITNEY [John-2, John-1]. C. John-4 WHITNEY, b. 29 Jul 1680, Watertown, MA, son of Joseph-3 and Martha (BEACH) WHITNEY [John-2, John-1]. The first possibility (A) is known to have married on 6 Oct 1737, Watertown, MA, Bethia CUTTER "of Watertown", he being called "of Weston". The intentions were recorded in Weston. His date of death is not known, but he is mentioned in the will of his father on Nov. 17, 1749. Bethia's date of death is also not known. The second possibility (B) is known to have married, before 1730, Susan -----, and died before 18 May 1776 in Watertown, MA, when his heirs were cited (_Middlesex County Probate Records_, File #24685). Her date of death is unknown, but it was after the birth of a daughter on 6 July 1748, and probably before the above citation of heirs. He seems to have always lived in Watertown. The third possibility (C) is known to have married, Feb. 22, 1703/4, in Watertown, Sarah CUTTING, who died July 10, 1753, Weston, MA. He left a will which is abstracted as follows: John WHITNEY of Weston; wife Sarah; son Joseph (executor), all land in Weston and Waltham, all cattle, and utensils of husbandry; son Isaac, L80; son Zachry., L70; son John, L70; son Abrahm., L70; witnesses John WARREN, Elisha WARREN, Ebenr. CUTLER (_Middlesex County Probate Records_, File #24684). This will was proved 15 Dec 1760, when the executor's bond was posted by Joseph WHITNEY, husbandman, with John WARREN, gentleman, of Weston, as surety (_ibid._). His death is clearly the one recorded in the Weston vital records on Nov. 11, 1760. As you can see, there is no _a priori_ reason why any one of the three possibilities might not be the husband of Beriah (BEMIS)(CHILD)(PEIRCE) WHITNEY. Nevertheless, I believe that the correct husband was (C) above. My reason to eliminate (A) is his age: he was 33 years younger than Beriah. While this is not impossible, it seems extremely unlikely! We also do not know that he was still alive, nor do we know that his known wife had died. My reason to eliminate (B) is his residence: he always lived in Watertown, as nearly as I can determine. Of course, he may have lived in Weston for long enough to qualify, but I find no record of that. We likewise do not know that he was still alive, nor do we know that his known wife had died. My reasons for choosing (C) are his age, his residence, and his known eligibility. He was one year senior to Beriah. He lived in Weston, where he made his will, where his known wife died, and where he died. His known wife Sarah died a little more than a year before the marriage to Beriah. Furthermore, Beriah's daughter Mary CHILD is proven by the estate papers of her estate to have married Joseph WHITNEY. This man can be identified as Joseph-5 WHITNEY, bp. June 12, 1719, Weston, MA, aged about 2 months, son of (C) and his wife Sarah (CUTTING). He married Mary CHILD on 11 Mar 1743 in Weston. This appears to explain how John and Beriah met, as father of the groom and mother of the bride. While this analysis is short of proof, I am going to accept this solution until proof is found. A possible source which has not been examined yet is Middlesex County Land Records. The deeds may shed light on either which John had a wife or widow Beriah between 1754 and 1768, or on the death dates of (A), (B), and their spouses, or else reveal some other useful piece of information. All this being said, it seems unlikely to matter much genealogically what the truth is here, since Beriah had no children by her husband John WHITNEY, whoever he was. It does make a difference historically and biographically, of course. I would be interested to correspond with anyone who might be able to shed more information on the above subject. Many of us have sent Jon gedcoms or attachments with descendency charts, FGR forms, etc over the past two years. He accepts responsibility only for accumulation - not sources or accuracy. I have submitted a fair amount, and the gedcoms that I have sent recently have notes and sources. However, previously, even though my notes included a lot of material on my sources, the earlier version of PAF that I was using did not transfer notes, etc. well in a gedcom, so some of that didn't make it through. I am distressed that it still contains some errors that are obvious (most of them derived from misinformation in Ancestral File) - such as the one that says Elinor, wife of John-1 was born at St. Margaret, Warwick. There is no St. Margaret Warwick, in fact, none in the entirety of Warwickshire (source: The Phillimore Atlas and Index of Parish Registers edited by Cecil Humphery -Smith, 1984 ed). The St. Margaret is too coincidental not to have come from the place of her husband's baptism, but I have no clue where the Warwick came from. I searched all the available transcribed parish registers (for Warwickshire) at the Society of Genealogists Library in London last year, looking for a marriage of an Elinor anyone to a John Whitney, with no luck. I also searched all of England in the Marriage Indices for the same thing. Another one that still is there (I think) is assigning the birth of one of John's children to "Hesworth" - another error from AF. The problem is, with so many different people contributing, Jon (rightly) feels that he cannot alter anyone's submission. There was a time about 15 months ago, when this process of accumulation was just getting started that we found that there were four (very slightly) different versions of a family sequence. John went to the trouble of typing out all the differences for each generation, identifying from whom each version came, and asked us for suggestions as to how to resolve the differences. I was the only one who answered with citations of my sources and my basis for establishing the material I had submitted. Jon was not willing, and I can surely understand - the extreme courtesy and kindness with which our people treat each other is one of the real strengths of this group - why he was not, to then arbitrarily decide that I was the only one that was "right". It might have meant the end of our "just-getting-started" association. This, BTW, was long before we became a Maillist at Maiser, we were just sharing stuff back and forth with an individually maintained address list of a dozen or so people. This problem does make Jon's life very difficult when it comes to match/merge of the information from each newly supplied gedcom. If you have any suggestions, I for one would be very happy to hear them. We do have a few very careful people like Robert Ward who are very scrupulous in providing their citations, and many of the rest of us are getting better and better (as you might guess if you followed the recent discussion of the parentage of the Samuel Whitney of Stratford, CT who married Ann(e) Laboree/Laborie). Sources were bandied back and forth and cited at great length, and it was probably Robert's transcription of the will of Samuel's father, Nathaniel Whitney of Weston, MA, that "clinched" the argument, and A. Whitney Brown finally concluded that the data that he had gotten from the Phoenix book on the CT Whitneys was in error. This is probably more than you wanted to know, but you did ask about sources. Many of the immigrants came to the area on return voyages of ships that carried lumber to Great Britian. I created a new database with one of the files that I downloaded and found 6892 individuals and 2961 marriages. It had a number of errors that it reported, including two husbands shown as female (one of which was the same female name married to herself as husband and unlinked - when I got details I found a record number that brought up the husband, who was linked back to his ancestry, but opening the marriage record got me only the wife married to herself as husband again, and it won't let me delete and replace that "husband" with the one it is supposed to be). I may come back to this and try again if one of the other versions doesn't work better. I don't want to spend time struggling with this database if it doesn't have all the material in it anyway. Before I try again to deal with the powers that be at Rootsweb, has anyone heard from or anything about Michael Ray Whitney since last April? The last time I tried with the owners of Rootsweb to determine the status of the listowner question, they told me that they had heard from Michael on the matter and would get back to me. They never did, and so I thought I might try again. I don't really WANT to be listowner, but the list will really be more effective if SOMEONE is, so as to handle whatever problems come up and keep track of the current status of the membership list, etc. AOL members directory still shows him as having an account, but the last time I tried to e-mail him (which was admittedly quite a while ago) the message came back mailbox full. Hope this clarifies some of the problems and confusion some folks have encountered when importing their WHITNEY12.GED. GEDCOM data is not 100% compatible with all genealogy programs in existence which is why various people may be missing information or getting exception errors. Such errors are to be expected. There are some "industry standard" events such as birth, marriage, death which are recognized by all genealogy programs and these should import with little problem. There are other events which can be recorded in a person's lifetime which may or may not be recognized by your genealogy program. It depends upon how flexible your program is. For instance, Family Origins lets the user customize the types of events. I added an event called "Cemetery" which included fields to list the cemetery name, date, and location. I also added an event called "graduated" which includes name of school, date, and location. If I were to create a GEDCOM file, it would include the cemetery and graduated events. Others who import the GEDCOM would probably reject those items because their program doesn't recognize cemetery or graduated. Some genealogy programs will let you control what events are exported, some don't. Some programs have options for placing unrecognized data into note fields, others programs will create a file of rejects. Different genealogy programs may also have various levels of success with notes and sources for the same reasons. Others have options to not export notes and sources. This is an age-old dilema for people who do programming and data processing and not just a genealogy problem. The sharing of information across different computers and different programs will have various degrees of success. Again, the level of industry-defined standards tend to dictate how much or how little information is successfully transferred. In this case, knowing that you have the correct number of individuals and correct number of families is a good indicator of how successful your GEDCOM import was. You can also browse, edit, or print the GEDCOM file with any standard text editor. Missing data can be manually entered as needed (although humbug to do). Experiment with your genealogy program to see what it does with stuff it doesn't recognize. Check to see if there are import/export options. There maybe features which you can play with which will increase the amount of data it recognizes. For those of you on Compuserve, the Roots forum has some library files about GEDCOM. As I recall, there was at least one file which went into some technical detail about how GEDCOM files work. Hope this helps! Paf only has one place for location and date in each event field. So Paf doesn't recognize the various gradations of the Roots III information. While it will put the location and date in there is ambiguous info in the notes area regarding the information it can't handle. Is there anyone on the list who uses PAF 3.0 or 2.31 who was able to download the witney12.ged and get the sources and notes? The input went all right for a while but then I started getting error messages. "ERROR: Bad record number (16705), file: Witney12\select\notes2.d." It told me to hit enter which I did and after tapping enter several times it went on inserting names and then gave me that message again. After this happening five times before I was through, it finally finished with 8467 Individuals and 2939 Marriages which I understand is correct. I thought, great, everything is OK now. My mistake!! When trying to check through the names I kept getting the same message with the same results. I kept trying to access the names but finally gave up and deleted all as I went out. I know that a lot of hard work went into Witney12, and all the others, and I want to thank Jon and everyone else involved, but can someone please tell me how I can avoid this problem. Ed looked through the LAMBETH St Mary P.R.s (separate bapt. & marr.) for the period 1538 thro' 1590, and I looked through the ISLEWORTH All Saints P.R. (combined bapt., marr. & burials) for the period 1566 (P.R. start date) thro' 1610. All these have been filmed, and the film clarity was fairly good on the whole. However, the Isleworth register was badly damaged, supposedly as a result of the Great Fire of London in 1666. This register covered the period 1566 to 1653, and it must have been lodged somewhere closer to London than Isleworth to have been so damaged by the Great Fire. Apparently the originals are currently held in the Hounslow Public Library. Unfortunately Ed found no reference to a Thomas Whitney over the period mentioned above. However, he did find one Whitney entry - a baptism for John the son of Robert Whitney on 27 Sept 1567. It is not at all obvious where this baptism fits in. The new facts are that a Robert Whitney and a John Whitney are linked to Lambeth Marsh in addition to our Thomas, the John Whitney being baptised there in 1567. This Robert could just about be the 3rd son of Sir Robert - the date almost makes sense - Robert could have been aged 20, although it is somewhat 'tight'. It might account for why Thomas called one of his sons John - if indeed Thomas & Robert were somehow related. Pure speculation! Now for the Isleworth register. First of all, I did not search beyond 1610 and so did not find any of the Isleworth entries relating to Thomas/John/Elinor. My objective was to find entries pertaining to a William Whitney, referred to by Melville, quoting Henry Austin Whitney. HAW mentions a William Whitney in Isleworth circa 1574 with 3 sons "William, Robert & Nicholas" (no specific dates quoted), and Jacobus (or Reed - I forget) suggests that Thomas's forbears should perhaps be sought in Isleworth. I found the following 7 entries:- a) 1573 July 24 Bur. Johan Whitney the wife of William Whitney b) 1573 Sept 17 Mar. ? Whitney to Elizabeth Smyth c) 1575/6 Jan 26 Bap. William Whitney the sonne of William Whitney d) 1579 Oct 27 Bap. Robert Whitney the sonne of William Whitney e) 1581 Nov 26 Bap. Lawrence Whitney the sonne of William Whitney f) 1586 Aug 03 Bap. Elizabeth Whitney the dau. of William Whitney g) 1590 July 12 Bap. Cedron Whitney the sonne of William Whitney Comments on the above ..... on a): Spelling 'Johan', presumably = Joan or Joanne - clearly "the wife ..". on b): 2 weddings were entered for that day. The groom's given name for the second wedding appears to have been written at the end of the first line immediately following the entry for the first wedding, and had been burned away, being at the edge of a right-hand page. The first word on the second line was "Whitney". on c): I have used "/" as a reminder that the calendar year ran April-March on f): The name Elizabeth for the first (only) daughter is at least consistent with the assumption that the wedding was of William Whitney to Elizabeth Smyth on g): Definitely "Cedron". My wife tells me that she has come across this name in old legal documents Final comment: no sign of a Nicholas as reported by HAW. I wondered if he had mis-read "Lawrence" but this is unlikely as the script was reasonably clear. Ed invited a passing lady to offer her opinion and she said "definitely Lawrence" without any prompting. More speculation - the date of the above marriage was 10 years before Thomas's marriage in 1583, so maybe William was Thos's older brother as suggested by Melville. ------------------------------------------ I have again checked through the 1988 IGI London Whitney listing, and I note an entry for Thomas Whitney, BIRTH, 1560 (no exact date), at "LAMBETH, Lambeth Marsh". The lack of an exact date usually indicates an Individual Entry, virtually all of which I have found to be wrong at best! Also, Lambeth would be listed under Surrey, not London, if recorded by an LDS photo team. I would normally be inclined to ignore it as pure speculation on someone's part, but it might be worth tracing the IGI entry document, which dates from June 1987, so the originator is probably still traceable and can be asked for his/her source. Do we know anyone who could easily do this? The Batch code is 8633503 sheet 71. Another odd one which might be worth tracking is the IGI Surrey Whitney entry for Robert Whitney, MARRIAGE to Elizabeth Guilliams/Williams[/Duglim], also 1560 (no exact date), again at LAMBETH. It might be useful to find out the source of the Lambeth connection for this Robert, the 3rd son of Sir Robert. I have not seen any other public record reference to Lambeth for this marriage. The Entry date is May 1978; the Batch code is 7727901 sheet 82. If the above two entries were reliable (which I strongly suspect they are not), then it would virtually clinch the connection between Thomas and Robert, still leaving the age difficulty to be explained, given that Robert apparently could not have been born before 1548. Perhaps you could try to pursue the sources for these IGI entries. On the subject of the origin of Henry of Connecticut, Reed mentions the Fish Street records. I had also homed in on these when corresponding with Tom Butcher, whose note on the de Salis fraud you recently transcribed. I've tried two different versions that Jon sent me - the first one had an error in it that stopped the conversion process somewhere in the middle - I didn't mark it down. The second one he sent ran into an error condition also, after converting 7028 individual records and 1254 marriages/families. I had thought that my computer, which was behaving somewhat strangely about that time, (giving me General Protection Faults and [seemingly] randomly closing out my modem in the middle of on-line sessions) might have "corrupted" the file during the download process, but the second try also had the same problem (although I cannot swear it was in the same place) and both downloaded without interruption from AOL. I've basically decided to wait for Whitny13, in the hopes that it will work with my programs. I really feel a strong need for all the sourcing and notes, so am not going to try to take it into PAF2.31. I have appreciated all the various suggestions and posts on the subject. A particular thanks to Debbie Stelmach for her explanation of the basis for some of the problems, but even my increased understanding after reading her explanation does not help me cope with the fact that my PAF3.0 stops dead when it runs into the error and then quits the conversion process right there, leaving out everything after that point. If it would skip over the error, omitting whatever is there, and go on until it finds the next "good data" and pick up and go on, I'd be perfectly happy with that result. I don't think I want to take a file that is 2,183,766 bytes long and open it in my word processor to hunt for a mistake that I probably wouldn't recognize anyway. For what it's worth, the PAF program, version 3.0 uses the Gedcom 5.5 standard, whatever that means - I think it is supposed to address the problem of transfer of notes and sources. I really don't understand this problem, and why it seems to be happening to so many of us. I do realize that we probably have a minimum of 5 or 6 and probably more different genealogy programs in use among the WRG, and that each of those probably has updates periodically (PAF update was VERY long in coming - we waited several years!), and so the problem of compatibility of GEDCOM standards will continue to remain a complex one. What has me most puzzled is that Jon sent me an advance copy of Whitny12 way back in June before I left on my West Coast trip, and I downloaded it just fine into PAF3.0 and have had no trouble with the material it included. Why the later version that came out after all the more recent contributions had been added now does not want to convert sucessfully is beyond my ken. Please, I hope that no one takes these postings as a criticism of Jon Aston. There is absolutely no way he can be held responsible for technical problems like these. He is using a relatively recent version of probably the most popular genealogy program, one that does have reasonably frequent upgrades, and he is making every effort to accommodate everyone else's problems. Transcriptions of vital records are usually very reliable, although occasional errors have been uncovered in such works. The history book no doubt depended on someone's transcription of the vital records, so would be one more step removed from the original sources. In the same way, GDMNH is probably two steps from the original sources. On the other hand, GDMNH was written by three of the most accomplished genealogists of their time, and I have found it to be generally trustworthy. Nevertheless, some of the conclusions drawn by them from interpreting the original records are such that I have had to question them, in that I interpret the same records in a different way. On 15 Feb. 1862 Nancy married Joseph French in York Township, Carroll County, Illinois. They had a daughter, Louise, born in 1863 and two sons who did not survive childhood. Some of the first attempts stuck at the midpoint somewhere. But, eventually I was able to get a working copy. The notes, however, are scrambled. This is normal, in my experience, for importation of gedcom files created in something other than PAF 2.31. I tried downloading the files that were posted as being compatible with PAF, only to have the program choke on them when trying to import the material into a PAF dataset. What has happened to me and I think to other users of PAF3.0 is that we get a little past half way through the conversion process and run into an error condition that stops the process right in its tracks - and leaves everything in the GEDCOM after that point inaccessible. The lot of 13 Bacon Street (Map # 34) was sold by Benjamin Whitney to Alfred and Elvira Merriam in Dec, 1849. In 1865, a Stillman Whitney bought the place and for the next 73 yrs. It was known as the "Whitney place." They built a bowling alley in a small house on their property but used it for prayer meeting when the Baptists declared bowling to be a sin. 3 of the family dies during the typhoid fever epidemic in 1843-44. In 1855, Frances Whitney, his son, occupied the house. The young man suggested a couple of things that might be causing the problem; 1) PAF wants to import gedcoms using something called the ANSEL character set (rather than ASCII, I guess), and he also suggested that Jon should "abbreviate the tags" - again, whatever that means - it doesn't seem to be one of the options I remember finding when I used PAF to create a gedcom, but then it may just automatically do that and not give me a choice. Jon has not yet had timeto get back to me about these two items (there may be a note from him that comes in when I go on-line to send this off). One question has occurred to me. Is there anyone in the group that uses PAF3.0 who has successfully converted the Witney12 gedcom? If so, could you create another from that file and send it to me, and I'll be responsible for answering any other requests for it. Should I try and import from the latter again, hoping that the second warning about unexpected trouble (-208) would not occur again? Or Try to down load it again from off the Net and start over? I got to exactly the same point in the gedcom for individuals - 7028 - instead of the 8467 we know are present, but did get 104 more marriages this time (1358 instead of 1254). They can't explain it any more this time than they could last time, except to say that I'm the only one who has reported a problem with importing a gedcom since 90,000 people have begun using PAF3.0 (although they did accept my saying that I was speaking on behalf of half a dozen others in our group who have had the same problem). Note to Ron & Marsha Bokleman: Have you been able to come up with the resolution of the problem of the two families for Joseph Whitney that seems to stem from material taken from Pierce, with the "second family" that includes Palmer Whitney (logically enough the son of the Anna Palmer [2nd?] wife) and his siblings coming so much later (born according to the Robert Rose descendancy from abt 1774 through 1784 - during which time Joseph would have been between 58 and 68 years old) than the children of Joseph with Mary Hastings (born between 1749 and 1761), for whom a marriage CAN be found. Is the problem the lack of VR's from the town of Warwick (they don't seem to be in Orange)? I can find no death for Mary Hastings Whitney in any of the VR's - perhaps they had removed from Roxbury to Warwick between the years 1761 and ca 1774, and her death was recorded there as well. He had eight children, I believe all born in Corinth, between 1829-1847, then the family emigrated to California. I don't even have what Michael had posted about the first Whitney to relocate from England to Bermuda and the lineage there prior to their transfer to Virginia. We both have written to Michael relatively recently, and when I checked with AOL, my message to him had not been "picked up" or downloaded by him, and he has never answered Alicia, either. Therefore, Alicia has agreed that someone needs to step up and take on the task of keeping track of who among us is working on these Southern Whitneys, and collect lineages and names and places to gradually build a database for this sub-group. Also, ultimately, the question of slave-owning will have to come up with more research into the family's history, and the two African-American Whitneys that were in the group not too long ago looking for AA Whitneys in southeast Virginia and eastern NC can be assisted as well. So, Alicia, I hope you will become the "collector". I'll help, and we can probably get tips from Jon Aston and Jeanne Muse on putting together a way to store and tag data. Just to bring in as many as possible, here is the beginnings of what Alicia sent to me just recently. A Samuel Whitney was born in Bermuda, probably somewhere between 1720 and 1730, a descendant of the family that Michael found coming there from England, sometime before 1650 (I think), and made his way to Virginia at an unspecified time (ca 1745+?). He married an Agnes Bynum, probably in the late 1740's and then died ca 1752, either in southern Virginia, near the NC line or in or around Halifax Co, NC. Their only known son, John, was born 23 Mar 1750 (which could have been 1750/51, since the calendar change didn't take place until 1752), in NC, and the descent from there is in her (Alicia's) hands. The "organization" of the J & E branch, and the CT branch, has been quite helpful to the majority of the WRG members, and trying to approach the needs of this smaller group of researchers the same way would seem to me to be a most sensible approach. I looked at this database today, and found an error which I thought I ought to report to the WRG and to the author, Tim Doyle. The page cited describes a certain Ezra WHITNEY, d. 8 May 1842, Burns, Allegany Co., NY, his wife Sally HOOKER, and their children. He was a soldier in the American Revolution under Col. Joseph Cilley in the First New Hampshire Regiment, during 1780, and his widow applied for a pension based on his service. The application states that he had been born in New Hampshire, and mentions a sister Lucretia (WHITNEY) FRANKLIN, b. ca. 1771, her older sisters, Ezra's marriage in Athens, Windham Co., VT, 22 Dec 1785, and their residence with their father in Rockingham, Windham Co., VT at the time of his enlistment in the army in 1780. The page states, but the pension application does not, that this Ezra WHITNEY was b. 1759 in Douglas, MA. Another page at the same site, <http://www.gentree.com/cgi-bin/igmget/n=Doyle?ID125> describes his purported father, Ezra WHITNEY, who was born 22 Feb 1729/30, Framingham, MA. This older Ezra WHITNEY was Ezra-5 WHITNEY [James-4, John-3, Jonathan-2, John-1], and his birth parentage are verified by the Framingham VR and Pierce's WHITNEY genealogy. Ezra-5 married secondly, 29 Nov 1795, Douglas, MA, Ruth (REED) KNAPP, and d. 24 Sep 1804 in Woodstock, CT, in his 75th year. What is wrong with this picture? Several things. First of all, Ezra-5 never lived in Rockingham, Windham Co., VT, especially during the Revolutionary War period. He was living then in Douglas, MA, and later moved (perhaps about 1794) to Uxbridge, MA, and then Woodstock, CT. Second of all, there is no sister Lucretia in this lengthy list of children. There was an Ezra WHITNEY who lived in Rockingham, Windham Co., VT, however! On a list of residents of Rockingham for 1781 appear Ezra WHITNEY and Ezra WHITNEY, Jr. (CD #136: Colonial America -- Pre-1790, Census Index, Tax Lists, etc., by Automated Archives). It is this Ezra WHITNEY, Jr., who is without doubt the Revolutionary soldier. But who was he? I can find only one father/ son pair named Ezra who are old enough to be these men: Ezra-6 WHITNEY, b. 29 Nov 1760, Lunenburg, MA, son of Ezra-5 and Agnes (-----) WHITNEY [John-4, Isaiah-3, Thomas-2, John-1]. What do we know about the family of this last man, Ezra-5 WHITNEY? He was b. 24 Aug 1731, Harvard, MA, son of John-4 and Rebecca-4 (WHITNEY) WHITNEY. He married firstly a certain Agnes -----. It is alleged, with what authority I do not know, that her maiden name was ROSSITER. Pierce reports that it was ROSS. They had the following children recorded in Shirley, Lunenburg, and Montague, MA: 1. son, b. 17 May 1756, Shirley. 2. daughter, b. 18 Dec 1757, Shirley. 3. Ezra, b. 29 Nov 1760, Lunenburg. 4. Rebekah, b. 2 Jan 1762, Lunenburg. 5. Agnes, b. 10 Apr 1767, Montague. I found a marriage record of Ezra WHITNEY and Elizabeth MARSHALL, at Brookline, MA, on 5 Mar 1788, recorded in Boston VR <http://www.erols.com/rlward1/whitney/mass/boston.html> who may or may not be this man. If it was not this man, I cannot identify who it might have been. Presumably he moved to New Hampshire shortly after the birth of Agnes in 1767, and to Whitingham, VT, by 1780. What is wrong with this picture? Firstly, the birth of Ezra-6 was not recorded in New Hampshire, but in Lunenburg, MA. Lunenburg is very close to the MA-NH state line. It is possible that he was born in NH and the birth recorded in MA. Apparently either he was already living there, or else he moved to New Hampshire at age about 8 years. Where is the sister Lucretia? Apparently she was born after the move to New Hampshire, or the second move to Vermont. There are two older sisters recorded, and perhaps others unrecorded. This is a *much* better fit than the other pair of Ezra WHITNEYs mentioned above. Further confirmatory details of this family might be found in the VRs of Vermont, and in the land and probate records of Worcester Co., MA, southern New Hampshire, and/or Whitingham, Windham Co., VT. I have no information from these important sources. Hopefully someone will examine them and settle this issue definitively. Anyone who can contribute to this discussion, feel free to chime in! Alas! It STILL doesn't work. Gene Graham made a (zipped) gedcom available on his web site that was made from The Master Genealogist program and represented the successful importing of Jon Aston's Whitny12 gedcom file, with all 8467 persons and 2939 marriages. After downloading and unzipping it, I tried to load it into PAF3.0 and got the same result - it stopped for an error condition after exactly the same number of individuals 7028 as I had been able to import from the different versions that Jon Aston had sent to me. The number of notes and sources I have collected during this process has varied from gedcom to gedcom version. Initially, I think I got 1254 notes and sources, Jon Aston's last try, which included a change that was recommended by Tech Support for PAF, gave me the most, 1358 notes and sources, and this latest try from Gene had only 1020 notes and sources. No marriages were transferred in any of these version - which I think is normal, as my memory tells me that marriages were always the last thing a gedcom transferred when importing another file. I have now come to the following conclusion. Either I have a defective version of this program that somehow creates an error condition when faced with a gedcom that includes a number of individuals higher than 7028, OR there is a flaw in the PAF3.0 version of the program that brings that result to anyone who has it. Before I try again to discuss this matter with the Technical Support People, would those of you who are using PAF3.0 and have been unable to import Whitny12 please try again to import this gedcom and write to me and tell me exactly what data you have on your screen as to the number of individuals and the number of notes and sources that you have transferred in at the point that the big red error screen/box shows up. That way I'll be better equipped to talk to the Tech Support people if I can cite how many other persons have had exactly the same problem with importing as I have had, or, how their experience differs from mine. Thank you all for bearing with the efforts to solve this problem for a minority of the members of the WRG, but I really think it is VERY important to deal with it as soon as possible. As electronic genealogical record keepers and as "on-line" researchers, any question of data integrity and free transfer of information is an important one that needs addressing immediately.
