Wells was a general in the Mormon "Nauvoo Legion," a close friend of Brigham Young, and a high officer in the Mormon church. Emmeline was a leader of Mormon women and Utah feminist. He married second 19 October 1845 BETSY CLOUGH, died 18 September 1873, daughter of Jeremiah and Mehitable (Strang) Clough of Lewiston. William Woodard was a farmer at Lisbon until 1834 when he moved to Lewiston. In the War of 1812 he served as a sergeart He was selectman in Lisbon and a justice of the peace in Lisbon and Lewiston. Date: Sat, 1 Nov 1997 08:41:20 -0600 I have a Melendy Whitney B.? M.3 Oct. 1857 in Two Rivers Manitowoc co; WI. to Thomas G. Fenton. She died 14 Nov. 1870 her father was Irem and mother Marilla S. (nee?) her and Thomas had a son on 1860 census in Brillion, Calumet co WI. born ab.1858 his name was Irem. After she died Thomas remarried a Mary Ann Dobson. He died out in Portland, OR. 21 May 1886.I found this out from his war records. I don't know where Melendy died just the date and her mother gave this info in thePension records and she was living in St. Lawrence co; N.Y. at the time (4 July 1893) I know my Fenton Lived in St.Lawrence co NY before comeing to WI. they lived in the town of Canton in the 1840's. Did Thomas and her go back out there? and she died there? because her mother says she was with her daughter at the time of death. and what ever happened to there son? A few months back I was trying to link my Ezra Whitney (1781 Boston) with the Early Whitney lines. Someone on the list (Allan??) kindly sent me the connection...that Ezra was the son of John and Hannah. Out of curiosity (did it kill this cat??) I looked the line up on the data base (copied and pasted below) but didn't find Ezra as a child of John and Hannah. Can anyone straighten me out??? Jan had asked Robert L. Ward why he believed that Rebeckah WHITNEY, wife of John-4 WHITNEY (Isaiah-3, Thomas-2, John-1) was the daughter of Moses-3 WHITNEY (Richard-2, John-1). The response by Mr. Ward was very detailed and highly documented, and the results appear to have been 'likely by a preponderance of the evidence'. When I first learned that my Ezra WHITNEY of Rockingham, Vermont was actually a son of this John-4 and Rebeckah (WHITNEY) WHITNEY, I noted that Ezra's son Moses (bp. 1 Sep 1776, First Church of Rockingham, Rockingham, Windham Co., VT) was probably named after his great-grandfather Moses-3 WHITNEY. At the time, I was not aware that Rebeckah's identification was based on preponderance of the evidence, and didn't think more about it. It wasn't until Jan pointed this all out that we realized that this was an important clue to Rebeckah's placement. Volume 4 (S-Z) of this set contains 5 pages of WHITNEY information. The book information is as follows: A Genealogical Dictionary of The First Settlers of New England showing Three Generations of Those Who Came Before May, 1692, on the Basis of Farmer's Register - authored by James Savage and originally published between 1860 and 1862. Reprinted in 1965 by the Genealogical Publishing Company. The information contained in these books gives birth, marriage, and death details as well as some children names and assorted family facts. Do you have another connection and what was found that disproved Pierce? #2 The group database shows that John remarried after Elinor died? I would love to have that info. #3 My records indicate that my 2nd generation Benjamin's wife's name was (1st) Jane ?? and (2nd) Mary Poor. The group database shows Jane Poor and then Mary Poor. Are these two sisters? #4 My records indicate that my 3rd generation Jonathan's wife's name was Susanna Whitney. Another group member indicated that it was Fairbanks. In checking 1850 Census have found that my Great Grandmother Dilly Jane Flint's family moved from New York and are shown in Downers Grove, Ill. with her entire family and she was only 12 years old in 1850, so she undoubtedly married in Illinois. In the 1860 census she is shown in Dekalb, Ill., maried to Daniel with their first two children, Harvey, my grandfather, and Delmar, my great Uncle, and these are proven. I searched the Ilinois Census for 1850 for Daniel or James Whitney, as he has been shown various times singly with one of these two first names. I found in the 1850 Census for Iroquois County, Ill., a Polly Whitney, age 46, with no spouse; however she had six children listed, viz. James 17, Josiah 15, Lucy 13, Seneca 12, William 10, and Lucinda 8. Also shown with her was a Sarah Reese 20, all of these having been born in New York. The James shown is the right age to be my Great Granfather, and inasmuch as their locations are fairly close in Illinois, feel that Dilly Jane and James might have met and married, as my Grandfather, Harvey was born in 1856, when Dilly Jane would have been 18 and James 24. What I am asking is if any of you have any data that might confirm my supposition and also whether your info might show who Polly Whitney's husband might have been? Undoubtedly, he must have been deceased or gone someway as he is not in the census entry. I have looked at Robert Ward's Website Data Base but nothing of help did I find. Whitney Born: 1845 (or perhaps 46), Yarmouth, Upper Canada Married: July 4, 1871 to Ida Brickley (b: 1850?, d:Aug 29, 1888) Died: April 11, 1906 Grand Rapids, Michigan Children: one son - Hebert C. Whitney (he used the C. but there was no given middle name) Born: February 3, 1971/72? Died: October 27, 1937 There is another Whitney family member of interest here: Stilman Whitney (son of Edward and Rhoda) was born on March 14, 1815 in Royalston (he appears in the census records online). He also moves to Yarmouth, U.C. in 1840 (is shown on land records - Artemus isn't), disposes of his land in 1844 and moves to Michigan. He dies in 1870 (approx) in the Grand Rapids area as well I believe. Given the proximity of ages and travel locations, they surely were travelling together and it is quite possible that they were closely related. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. The problem with this is that the various researchers have simply taken their information from some unknown (to me, since I didn't see the above pages myself) sources, borrowing from one another. This happens frequently in genealogy. And that's one very good reason to always document your sources. <G> Anyway, we need to get back to the original argument for Alice being a WHITNEY. That may have been Bond. Savage gets his info from Bond, and I think this error is simply being spread like a bad virus. Under the children of Joshua WHITNEY, Savage says Bond listed a "d. Woods, wh. he thot. was Alice, w. of Nathaniel W. but the last is uncert." We now know she was Hannah WHITNEY, the wife of Thomas WOODS. And as has been posted to this list several times, Joshua WHITNEY does not list a daughter Alice in his will, which was written when Alice (--) WOODS was still living. Nor does he mention any grandchildren who would have been her children. Take a look at the website of Robet Ward, another WHITNEY researcher. My argument about the surname of Alice (--) WHITNEY is there, in full. I hold in my lap the Whitney-Lindsay Genealogy written by William Trider Lindsay. The Whitney side of the Genealogy goes back to the year 1066. I was born in 1981, and can trace my heritage back long past Henry Whitney. However, in your files, there is no evidence of Thomas Mott Whitney having any children. In my genealogy, after TMW, this is listed: "Isaac King Whitney, second son of the above: born on Cape Negro Island, Berrington, N.S. January 4th 1833. A master mariner, went to Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, 19th April 1855. Married at her father's house, on Stephan's Island, now called Young's Island, in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, 28 January 1858, Louisa Sara Ann, born 4th August 1836, daughter of Peter and Elizabeth (Hirtte) Young. They dwelt in Lunenberg until 1867, and in Shilburn until 1871, when they returned to Lunenburg and lived there the remainder or their lives. My earliest known ancestor is Eric the Confused. He was born either in Ireland or in Egypt - I'm not entirely sure. I do have a copy of a birth tablet for him and it seems he was born in 8___ B.C., according to the tablet. (Some of the carved numbers are worn away.) I have names for a couple of his children - including that renowned ancestress of many of us modern researchers, Matilda the Strong. She had an interesting bunch of children, and they married into a very mixed bag of nomadic tribespeople. Since her children were all very prolific, I am sure some of you can tell me more. I volunteer to keep records of any of these ancestors you can tell me about. I am interested in the commonplace, boring branches of the family as well as the exciting, historical figures. I haven't been able to link any of these early ancestors to my people in this country yet, but maybe someday we can all find that we are connected - way back! These pages were stuck in a book that my father in law gave to me ³The Whitneys....by EP Hoyt. (that¹s a whole different discussion) The articles are not big and are in fact just a few highlighted sentences with references to Eli Whitney. I am not sure that they could be published on the web because of copyright laws. I will type out what is here and if someone wants to investigate further, they can feel free. I really don¹t think that there is enough info to worry about, but its a place to start. There is actually much more information in the Hoyt book regarding Eli's problems with his patents and his years of financial hardship and near bankruptcy. He then hit it big with his assembly line ideas in the manufacture of guns in 1798 and barely finished his order of 10,000 before the war of 1812. He was an overnight sucess! ----only the night was about 10 to 11 years long------ So here are the quotes from the articles: AMERICAN FIREARMS and the CHANGING FRONTIER Written by Waldo E. Rosebush for the Eastern Washington State Historical Society Spokane, Washington 1962 page 41 The First Army Revolver, 1847 After this time the Mexican War threatened and United States troops under Zachary Taylor were sent to Texas. Among the Texas Rangers hoping to join Taylor in case of actual war, came Samuel Walker who served in the war against the Seminole Indians under Lieutenant Colonel William S. Harney in whose command Colt¹s revolvers and rifles had been used. After war was declared Walker was made a captian in the new regiment of Mounted Rifles. He was sent to his home area at Baltimore on recruiting duty. He met Sam Colt and coached by Sam, with the help of the President and the Secretary of War, he was soon endeavoring to get Colt revolvers for his new regiment. The result was the first official army revolver, the Colt-Walker, of which 1100 were made by Eli Whitney, Jr. One thousand were for the army and 100 for disposition otherwise - mainly for gifts or promotional advertising. This was a very large and heavy weapon. It weighed 4 lbs 9 oz. and had a nine-inch barrel. Its .44 caliber required concial balls running 32 to the pount or round balls of 48 to the pound. This earlier death record must pertain to Sarah (HAGAR) WHITNEY. Then who does the later death record apply to? It must be that Nathaniel-3 WHITNEY had two wives, both named Sarah. First he married Sarah HAGAR, born 3 Sep 1651, who died in 1722. Then he married some other woman named Sarah, born about 1658, who died 7 May 1746, aged 88 years. I have to say I cannot document this "sense" of his character beyond stating that it represents an impression gleaned over the years from little hints in the Pierce and the Melville, particularly in the description in the latter of his wife's involvement in the Church without his name being equally mentioned. Melville speculates that it was because he had embraced Puritanism, and had thus separated himself from active participation in the Church. However, there seems to be little evidence that his son, John, pursued this course, or indeed that his father had led him in this direction. Thus, my "impression" that Thomas Whitney was somewhat more secular and maintained a house and life appropriate to a "gentleman". Without any Kentucky ancestors of my own, I browsed around to see what kind of Whitney material I might find. In the Directory of Family Associations I found two with Whitney as other than a main name, although there is no longer any reference to a Whitney Family Association - I guess we're it. [The De Salis fraud strikes again] We all know that Thomas and Mary Roach Whitney lived in Berkhampstead St. Mary's Parish, and had three children there in the 16teens, but we also know that there is absolutely no evidence that they were the parents of the Henry Whitney who came to Long Island and CT in the 1640's and after. The name Sarah Ketcham does not ring a bell for me, but I don't work with the CT Whitneys on a regular basis, so perhaps Jeanne Muse, who is keeping the database for now even though she, too, is not of that line, or another Henry descendant in the WRG can say something about her. I was careful to include from the book the comma after the name Henry Whitney, so it doesn't actually say that Sarah Ketcham was his [hitherto unknown] wife, but seems to at least imply it. Regardless of all this, unless there have been recent discoveries that I haven't heard of, all of the descent thereafter comes from his single son, John Whitney, anyway, so the identity of Henry's wife is not crucial to the descent in America, just of interest for looking back. Althought it is not an inquiry, I wanted to fill you in on a genealogy and history vacation I am taking, because it is a good experience and I encourage others to experience leaving the internet at times and experiencing the history and location of your ancestors. I have researched various Plymouth, Mass lines including Mayflower lines for years, and have for years wanted to spend Thanksgiving in Plymouth, and this year I decided to do it. We arrived Saturday in Plymouth. The weekend before Thanksgiving there was a parade on Saturday, but the high point was that on Saturday and Sunday four old homes from the 1600's, one lived in by a Pilgrim, were open for tours The homes are small and very spartan, and people inside dressed like Pilgrims andtalked about the daily life of the Pilgrims, and cooked food like the Pilgrims ate, and played old musical instruments and sang old songs from the 1600's. There is also a full size replica of the Mayflower, there is Plymouth Rock, and a wax museum describing the story of the Pilgrims, the Pilgrim Museum, a lantern tour at night of Plymouth and several monuments that tell the story of the various events. A highlight is Plimoth Plantation. It is a history theme park in which the original 1620 Plymouth Village is recreated and people dress as Pilgrims. Each has taken on the name of a Pilgrim, or wife or child, and they talk like the Pilgrims did and tell you about the life, beliefs,chores etc. They talk like they lived in 1620 and if you try to talk about anything modern they can not understand you. They are farming, cooking, making shoes, sawing wood, cleaning their guns, washing clothes, doing all the chores and jobs the Pilgrims did. The houses are small houses with thatched roofs like they were the first years. You ask questions about anything, and they have researched the person and the times and tell you about things, and it is really great. Tomorrow there is a Pilgrim parade in town to many of the historic spots, and the old homes are open again. We plan to go back to Plimoth Plantation in the afternoon. We have also done genealogy research at Plymouth Library, and at other town halls and libraries. Today (Wednesday) we took a side trip to a small country cemetary ten miles from Plymouth and located the graves of my great-great grandfather and great-great grandmother who died in 1881 and 1884 , and in another cemetary found the tombstones of my 4g grandfather who died in 1823 and 5 g grandfather who died in 1794. (Incidentally, let me say that if you do visit cemetaries I would recommend that if possible you attempt to contact the person in charge of the records before you arrive to get a map of the cemetary. Many of the very old tombstones are so eroded they are barely legible or totally illegible.) In any event, Thanksgiving in Plymouth has been a great experience. It would be fun to come here any time of year, but at Thanksgiving it is especially meaningful. Of course it is traditional to spendThanksgiving with family, but if you ever do decide to travel over Thanksgiving, I fully recommend a trip to Plymouth, or to any spot your ancestors lived, to get a real feel of their life and times and history. The prime source for the CT Whitneys who are descended from Henry Whitney who came first to Long Island in the 1640's and then to Norwalk, CT a little later is a three volume book published around 1875 by Stephen Whitney Phoenix, the exact title of which I can't remember (I'm a John and Elinor person). This Henry had only one known son, John Whitney, married Elizabeth Smith, and the family mushroomed from that line of ancestry. Mr. Phoenix hired (by mail, I assume) a supposedly reputable genealogical researcher in London to determine the English ancestry of this Henry Whitney. Her name was Mrs. De Salis. She provided him with a long and distinguished ancestry for Henry that has turned out to be based on fabricated and non-existent documentation. I personally have tried to follow the beginnings of the line, and the purported Father and Mother (Thomas and Mary Roach Whitney) did have children (3) in the St Mary Parish in Berkhampstead, Hertfordshire, but no Henry was among them. Mr. Phoenix did discover, after the publication of his three volume set, that such a fraud had been perpetrated on him, but it was too late to stop the distribution and sale of the books. Mr. Green says I probably belong to one of the "unconnected Whitneys" and just post your query to the List. So here goes. My name is Barbara Lautherboren and I live in California. I have just recently started researching my family history and have been looking for the Whitneys. My Grandmother was Ruth Elizabeth Whitney, born May 4, 1884, in Six Mile Run, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Zachariah Whitney, born between June and Sept. 1851 in Crickhowell Parish, Brecon Co., Wales. Zachariah was the son of Zachariah Walter Whitney who brought his family to the U.S. in 1853. First they lived in Danville and later moved to Six Mile Run. It seems that he preferred to be known by his middle name of Walter and may have been a miner in Wales as this is the occupation he took up in PA. There is a Z. W. Whitney listed on the 1900 Census, which I believe to be him. There is a granddaughter who thinks that Zachariah (Walter) had a brother but was unable to remember any name. Right now, this is about all the information I have on the Whitneys in Wales. Through the Internet I have discovered four cousins and am in contact with two by email and have gathered many names and family stories on the more recent Whitneys and their descendants. If the tombstone said for example, "Lemuel WHITNEY, 1784-1853", since the death was *after 1850*, it would not be included in the deaths section of the published vital records, but the birth would be. Probably three of the four of these fall into that category. The custom of the 1700's would then be moot, since the death occurred in the last half of the 1800's. By the way, I *have* seen tombstones listing only the birth date! They are erected by the person, during his lifetime, and the birth date is carved into them with a place for the death date. Often this is done to remove from the heirs the financial burden of buying a stone and having it carved. Often it is done at the time of death of some other relative. Then the person dies, and the heirs never pay to have the death date inscribed. Furthermore, for Lemuel, there is the birth in Harvard for "WHITNEY, Lemuel, s. of (Col. C.R.1.) Josiah and Sarah, Sept. 19, 1784." In Ashburnham, there is the marriage of "WHITNEY, Lemuel of Ashby and Betsy Hall, Dec. 4, 1804." According to WITNEY12.GED, this Lemuel WHITNEY d. 9 Jul 1853 (*after 1850*), Ashburnham, and his wife Betsy d. 30 Apr 1852 (*after 1850*), Ashburnham. This was Lemuel-6 WHITNEY [Josiah-5, Richard-4, Richard-3, Richard-2, John-1]. This accounts for two of the four problematical entries. Also among the Ashburnham marriages is "WHITNEY, Samuel and Abigail Wilder, Aug. 12, 1802." These are undoubtedly the people in the other two entries. According to the database, Abigail WILDER, b. 3 Jan 1783, d. 23 Oct 1861 (*after 1850*), and her husband Samuel WHITNEY was b. 20 May 1783, and d. 9 May 1837, son of Silas-6 and Sarah (WITHINGTON) WHITNEY [Samuel-5, William-4, Nathaniel-3, John-2, John-1]. She located a possible entry and then took it further by looking up the 1860 Ohio census. I had a great time and was able to visit Westminster Abbey, St. Margaret's Church, The Tower of London, The Tower Bridge, York Minster, and many, many more. John Whitney was kind enough to send a compilation of several older posts to this list to me (it looks like they were posted to the list just before I joined). One of the things John directed me to was Allan Green's suggestion that someone check Boyd's Marriage Index for a possible second marriage for our Thomas Whitney (the father of the immigrant John). The two marriages of Thomas Whitney to Mary Griffin [our Thomas's second marriage?] and Mgt George [our Thomas's third??] that I posted to this mailing list earlier were from the typed transcription, not from the Boyd's Marriage Index. The information contained in that message regarding the great fire, etc. was directly from the title page of the transcription. No further information about Thomas's residence, etc. was found. I checked the card catalog, but was unable to see any mention of baptism or death records from this time period, only marriage records. That's not to say that they might not be there - after all, I was only in the Society for a total of three hours. The Society of Genealogists is located at 14 Charterhouse Buildings, Goswell Road, London EC1M 7BA. NOTE: In the following records, note the marriage of 'An WITNEY' to 'Jn De Mendoza' in S Gregory Paul [St. Gregory by St. Paul] just two years before the two Thomas WITNEY marriages there. Could they be related? Was our Thomas attending the church of a daughter Ann when he met his second and possibly third wife/wives? Also of note: While in Yorkminster, I purchased a reproduction map showing London in 1666, just after the Great Fire. He is chiefly remembered for his work on Henry VII's chapel at Westminster and S. George's chapel at Windsor. He designed the former and finished and decorated the latter. He died Aug 5, 1503, and was buried in the chapel at Windsor which bears his name." These marriage records may or may not refer to OUR Thomas, but the name of the wife in the latter of the two records does match the name of our Thomas's widow at the time of his death. I noticed this evening another clue which, in my opinion, seems to add just a little more weight to the hypothesis that it is indeed our Thomas that we have located. On 22 Feb 1607, John Whitney son of Thomas Whitney of Westminster yeoman [our Thomas and John] apprenticed to William Pring of the Old Bailey. This fact is not new at all - it comes directly from Melville's The Ancestry of John Whitney, published in 1896. What is new is when one realizes that 'Old Bailey' is a street in London - a street just two blocks from St. Gregory's Church by St Paul's Cathedral.
