Well, the Levi WHITNEY, b. 26 Apr 1781, Harvard, son of Richard and Mary (WILLARD) WHITNEY, was apparently the one who d. 6 Apr 1785, Harvard, so he, at least, is eliminated. The Levi WHITNEY, b. 23 Aug 1793, Harvard, son of Jonas and Relief (WHITNEY) WHITNEY, was only 18 years old, whereas the Levi WHITNEY, b. 30 Aug 1786, Harvard, son of Hezekiah and Lucy (POLLARD) WHITNEY, was 25, a more likely age for this marriage. This last man d. 25 Apr 1818, Harvard, aged 31 years, 7 months, 26 days, according to the VRs. This accounts for the ending of the births of the children. I think it very likely that the 1786 Levi is the one who had the marriage and children cited. Israel-6 Whitney (Jonas-5, Jonas-4, Moses-3, Richard-2, John-1) was born 16 Jan 1767 in Harvard. In searching for a marriage for him, I find two that are possible: Israel Jr., m. Susanna Gary, Mar. 30 1788, in Harvard; and Israel, m. Abigail Puffer, in Bolton (both Bolton & Harvard VR's) 22 Apr 1789 Is there any will or administration that would help clarify which of these Israels was the son of Jonas-5? I tend to lean to the latter, albeit mostly because of the tendency to think that the former was the son of an Israel, although I do know that the appellation Jr. was often used simply to separate older from younger without indicating direct descent. Unfortunately, the only Israel that I can find in the Harvard VR's that is the son of an Israel wasn't born until 1775, which leaves him just a bit young to marry in 1788. There was also a Rufus-5 WHITNEY, son of Joshua-4 WHITNEY [Cornelius-3, Joshua-2, John-1], who m. Sarah GRAVES, who was even older, but exact age unknown. I did not find anything concerning marriage records, but I would assume that they would be handled like the death records. The certificate was delivered about one month later (with a different spelling of the name!) so they do a fairly good job considering the volume. The system seemed to be pay your fine and move on. What is more, having an illegitimate child did not seem to have much social consequence either. It didn't happen often, which indicates to me that women must have felt pressure to have children within the bounds of marriage. But I have at least two cases in my own family, from two different centuries, of women marrying very soon after having an illegitimate child by, purportedly, a man other than the one she eventually married. Social stigma didn't carry too far in those cases. On cousin marriages: As Claudia informs us, it happened quite often. I bet cousin marriages were especially frequent in small towns on the frontier. I haven't seen a formal study of this question but I do have accumulated anecdotal evidence from New England and Louisiana. Recall that people often migrated in family groups. There might not be too many other families on the frontier with eligible children. Related families settled near each other and exchanged resources with each other, giving cousins ample time to meet and get to know each other. If you read the novels of Jane Austen, among others, you will note that young people were very aware of the social and economic consequences of the matches they made. Marrying a cousin might help ensure that land and other resources would remain in the family (recall the situation in Pride and Prejudice where Eliza is confronted with the prospect of marrying her cousin, the minister. The minister has a good living and would eventually inherit the Bennet's house, but Eliza is certainly not in love. I think this situation was rather familiar to Jane Austen--and would be to a number of young New England women). It is well worth it to read books like Thompson's Sex in Middlesex not just because it may have data about one's own family, but because it helps the researcher place ancestors into the context of the times. Another EXCELLENT book which discusses the problem of illegitimacy and the the courts is Cornelia Hughes Dayton, Women Before the Bar: Gender, Law and Society in Connecticut. (Chapel Hill: UNC Press, ca. 1995). Both of these books are available on interlibrary loan. The death of the first Sarah would account for the naming in Joshua's will of "eldest daughter" Hannah, who m. after 1688, Thomas WOODS (b. 9 Mar 1663, Groton), and whose birth I place at about 1670. Surely she was not by Abigail. Who were Joshua's wives? The only references I have seen for the existence of Lydia ----- are: 1. If not, I propose that Lydia is an error for Lydia (JONES) WHITNEY, wife of Joshua's brother Jonathan-2 WHITNEY, who is well documented. In regards to the wife Mary -----, I have found in the IGI the marriage record of Mary BUCKMINSTER to *Joseph WIDNEY* on 20 Nov 1664 in Charlestown, MA. Of course "WIDNEY" is one of the variant spellings of WHITNEY. There was no *Joseph* WHITNEY born early enough to be the groom of this marriage. It seems very likely to me that this is record of the marriage of Joshua-2 WHITNEY to his wife Mary -----. Certainly the date tallies perfectly with the birth of the oldest child. If so, all the older children of Joshua would have been by her. The transcription of the WHITNEY entries from the Vital Records of Charlestown, MA, which have been posted to my WHITNEY website do not include this event. This needs to be checked to make sure that those records do show this marriage, and to get an exact transcription. Perhaps it says "Jos. WIDNEY", for example, which would support this theory. If he waited until 1664 to marry, that's also somewhat unusual for that time. Men usually married by about 25 back then. In fact, I believe there were actual sanctions (or at least lots of pressure) on men who remained bachelors into their late 20s. That is another reason for thinking that perhaps he really was married to a Lydia ___ who died by 1664, possibly without offspring. Also, Savage says that Thomas BUCKMINSTER died in December 1659. She could have died soon after their marriage, possibly in childbirth. We just don't know at this point because, as you pointed out, the births of Joshua's oldest children don't name their mother. Torrey lists her, but he could have gotten the name from Bond or H. A. Whitney. I think a look at Torrey's original manuscript, which shows his sources, is in order. Of course "WIDNEY" is one of the variant spellings of WHITNEY. There was no *Joseph* WHITNEY born early enough to be the groom of this marriage. It seems very likely to me that this is record of the marriage of Joshua-2 WHITNEY to his wife Mary -----. Certainly the date tallies perfectly with the birth of the oldest child. If so, all the older children of Joshua would have been by her. The transcription of the WHITNEY entries from the Vital Records of Charlestown, MA, which have been posted to my WHITNEY website do not include this event. This needs to be checked to make sure that those records do show this marriage, and to get an exact transcription. Perhaps it says "Jos. WIDNEY", for example, which would support this theory.>> I bet you've found Mary's identity. But one thing bothers me. Joshua was born in 1635. If he waited until 1664 to marry, that's also somewhat unusual for that time. Men usually married by about 25 back then. In fact, I believe there were actual sanctions (or at least lots of pressure) on men who remained bachelors into their late 20s. That is another reason for thinking that perhaps he really was married to a Lydia ___ who died by 1664, possibly without offspring. Also, Savage says that Thomas BUCKMINSTER died in December 1659. Whitney - I would think that he would have to have been much older than about 20 at the time if he was holding the position/rank of First Sergeant of a Cavalry Troop. My impression of the military history of that time would be that promotions for enlisted men did not move rapidly at all, with many spending over 20 years without rising beyond Corporal. I would estimate that an outstanding First Sergeant should be in his late 30's or early 40's at best, and could actually be in his fifties. That said, I'm fascinated with the idea of trying to find out who he was!! If we have any REAL (as in contrast to my amateur status) military historians among the group, please correct me if I'm wrong about the above, and would there be any way to find out about the origins of 1st. I can find no Albert Cheney in any of the databases at hand, and only one Eleanor whose birthdate (in 1837, in New York) might possibly be feasible for the marriage you are seeking. This would have been in the Phoenix book. I also might suggest that you focus in the Pierce book on the sons of Zerah Whitney, born 1784 in Newtown, Fairfield Co., CT. I descend from the last born son in this family, Martin Van Buren Whitney, b. 1832, nr. Buffalo, NY. The other five sons, born between 1810 and 1822, all ended up in Michigan, but I don't have their marriages and descent easily at hand. All would have been of an age to have fathered the Eleanor you have asked about, and all came in the 1840's to eastern Kent County, MI. If the Pierce book doesn't have these, then you might check the Marriage Records of Kent County circa 1865-75. I hope this will be helpful. Allan E. I can find no Albert Cheney in any of the databases at hand, and only one Eleanor whose birthdate (in 1837, in New York) might possibly be feasible for the marriage you are seeking. This would have been in the Phoenix book. I also might suggest that you focus in the Pierce book on the sons of Zerah Whitney, born 1784 in Newtown, Fairfield Co., CT. I descend from the last born son in this family, Martin Van Buren Whitney, b. 1832, nr. Buffalo, NY. The other five sons, born between 1810 and 1822, all ended up in Michigan, but I don't have their marriages and descent easily at hand. All would have been of an age to have fathered the Eleanor you have asked about, and all came in the 1840's to eastern Kent County, MI. If the Pierce book doesn't have these, then you might check the Marriage Records of Kent County circa 1865-75. I hope this will be helpful. Allan E. Now, as to your questions about Ebenezer Whitneys, I'm afraid that our database isn't being very helpful about marriages and descent from these men. 1) E., s. o. Elnathan & Sarah, married an Abigail Brown in 1762 in Weston 5) E., s. o. Ebenezer and ? I find the Sutton record, but no mother or marriage, unless above has this Ebenezer mixed up with Ebenezer in 4) above. The Weston record shows the Ebenezer married to Abigail Brown as being "of Sutton" (as does the Sutton record). Our database, however, has the one who married Abigail as the son of Elnathan. There is also the Sutton record of a marriage of an Ebenezer to a Lydia Goodall in 1753, but unless Ebenezer 5) was quite precocious, he would be only 15 yrs, 2-1/2 months old at the time. This may be a second marriage for the Ebenezer shown as the father in the 1737 birth. I (too) only show one child for Samuel and Lydia Spooner Whitney, a Samuel (Jr.) born in 1731. I suppose that this has not really helped much. I did search all the ME Vital records that I have available (from Robert Ward's website), looking for other children of Samuel and Lydia, with no luck.
