[p. 17] 30. CATHRINA LONGYEAR, daughter of Johannes Longyear (No. 5) and Annatje Winne, born Shandaken, Ulster County, N.Y., Nov. 6, 1799, and died Jan. 16, 1884. On Jan. 21, 1821, she married Eli Whitney (brother of John Whitney), who was born Shandaken, July 31, 1797, and died there Apr. 5, 1867. He was a farmer and [p. 18] served in the War of 1812 as a substitute for his uncle, John Higgins. The Commemorative Biographical Record of Ulster County makes the statement that he was a great-grandson of Eli Whitney, the inven- tor of the cotton gin. This is very doubtful. He was proprietor of a boarding and rooming house. They adopted a son of Arthur Bushnell and named him Edward B. Ostrander, born 1874, and died, unmarried, Apr. 25, 1908. [p. 68] 232. HENRY WILLIAM LONGYEAR, son of William C. Longyear (No. 40) and Elisabeth Jansen, born Marbletown, Ulster County, N.Y., Dec.20, 1818, and died Feb. 26, 1849. On Nov. 17, 1840, he married Elizabeth Whitney (No. 174), his second cousin (daughter of Eli Whitney and Cathrina Longyear), who was born Aug. 19, 1822, and died July 18, 1891. They removed to Onondaga, Mich., in 1845 and settled on a new farm in Section 24. He died as a result of an accident at a log raising. His widow married Joseph Sitts Apr. 24, 1853. He married Jennie Bryant (daughter of Thomas Bryant and ----- Kersey), who was born Andes, N.Y., about 1850, and died Stamford, Dec. 29, 1908. He was engaged in coal business in Stamford. In 1872, he married (1) Frances Tompkins (daughter of Stephen Tompkins and ----- Myers), who was born Aug. 16, 1849, and died Apr. 14, 1873. In 1877, he married (2) Ursula Misner (daughter of George S. Misner and Frances Bodel), who was born Smithville, N.Y., and died Shandaken, May 24, 1888. On Oct. 22, 1891, he married (3) Abbie Van Etten (daughter of Rufus Van Etten and Caroline Hunt), who was born Kingston, N.Y., about 1863, and died there, June 22, 1923. She married William Louis DeGraff (son of Lawrence DeGraff and Harriet (Spoonmaker), who was born High Falls, N.Y., Nov. 10, 1849, and died Philadelphia, Aug. 29, 1919. For a number of years they were both missionaries for the American Sunday School Union, working in Iowa, Utah, and other western states. No children. 693. MARION F. WHITNEY, son of Hiram Whitney (No. 177) and Anna Maria Fredenbergh, born Shandaken, Ulster County, N.Y., Sept. 23, 1855, and died Phoenicia, N.Y., Sept. 14, 1912. On Nov. 16, 1875, Shandaken, he married Cora Isabel Benson (daughter of Levi Benson and Harriet Matilda Bate), who was born July 21, 1858, and died Phoenicia, Jan. 9, 1916. He was a farmer and hotel pro- prietor in Phoenicia. No children. 694. ELIAKIM S. WHITNEY, son of Hiram Whitney (No. 177) and Anna Maria Fredenbergh, born Shandaken, Ulster County, N.Y., Jan. 18, 1858, and died Kingston, N.Y., Apr. 30, 1922. On June 18, 1879, Kingston, he married Jennie V. K. Beekman (daughter of Thomas Beekman and Nellie Catherine Van Keuren), who was born Kingston, June 7, 1875, and died there Aug. 27, 1914. He was a merchant and chair manufacturer, director of the National Ulster County, Bank, of which he was the second largest stockholder. He left an estate of approximately $100,000. She married (2), on Oct. 29, 1914, Stamford, N.Y., John Stephen O'Neil (son of Francis O'Neil and Mary FitzPatrick), who was born Riverdale, N.Y., Aug. 16, 1880. Coons (daughter of William D. Coons and Ella D. Mattoon), who was born Shandaken, N.Y., July 24, 1888. He is an accountant and they reside in Kingston, N.Y. At the close of the World War he was awarded a medal by the U.S. Treasury Department for services con- nected with the sale of Liberty Loans which he conducted. Children, born Shandaken, N.Y.
