SOME MORE DESCENDANTS OF JOHN AND ELINOR WHITNEY By Edward Raymond Sandiford A deed recorded at Pomfret, Conn., dated Nov. 18, 1728, a copy of which is appended to this article, affords the link by which a numerous group of Whitney and related families are joined to the parent stem of John and Elinor Whitney's already much-branched and fruitful tree whose roots, according to Henry Melville in his "Ancestry of John Whitney", go back to the year 1066 to Turstin the Fleming, son of Rolf, one of the followers of William the Conqueror, who was given, among nine different tracts of land, the castle and lands of Wytteneye on the Welsh border. For a few generations the family name was "de Wytteneye", later "de Whitney" but the "de" was later dropped, the name persisting as "Whitney". In the deed mentioned, Ezekiel Whitney pays his respects to his mother, Anna Whitney, relict of Ebenezer Whitney, deceased, and quit claims certain rights to his brothers and sister, sons and daughter of Ebenezer Whitney, whom he names as follows: Zachariah, Enoch, Israel, Ebenezer and Anna. Pierce, in his "Whitney Genealogy", lists Ebenezer3 Whitney, (Richard2, John1) and records that he married Anna _____ and had Zachariah and Esther, who married Wm. Bigginton and died Oct. 19, 1727. This death record of Esther is found at Pomfret, Conn., accompanied by the statement that her death and the fact that she was daughter of Ebenezer Whitney were recorded at the request of both Zachariah Whitney and William Bigginton. It is shown, therefore, that Ezekiel, Enoch, Israel, Ebenezer and Anna may now be added to Pierce's record of Zachariah and Esther as the children of Ebenezer and Anna. It is Enoch among these children of Ebenezer in whom the writer is especially interested. For several years he was the earliest known progenitor of this group of families. He was married in Plainfield, Conn., and lived in that town, in Preston and later in Kent. The records of his marriage and of the births of his children were in the
-2- vital records but his own origin was shrouded in mystery until the existence of the deed mentioned was recently discovered at Pomfret by the writer. -3- tion that after his marriage he removed from Plainfield to that part of the Society of New Preston that in 1779 became part of Washington, Conn.; that he served two consecutive enlistments in the Revolution, a total of 6 years; that he was at the surrender of Burgoyne at Saratoga and at West Point when Major Andre was captured. In their later years both he and his wife were badly crippled with rheumatism. In 1818 he applied for and got a pension. In 1837 his widow applied for and received his pension, giving her age as 81. Joseph Whitney of Warren, Conn., by affidavit attested to his brother Hesekiah's war service and thereby identified himself as a son of Enoch. JOHN WHITNEY (c 1592-1675) John Whitney was born at Westminster (now part of London) in 1592 according to Melville's "Ancestry of John Whitney". His parents were Thomas and Mary (Bray) Whitney. He lived for a number of years at Islesworth, about seven miles up the Thames from London but returned to London for a few years before his emigration to the Massachusetts Bay Colony. In April, 1635; he, with his wife, Elinor, together with their sons, John, Richard, Nathaniel, Thomas and Jonathan, ranging in age from about fifteen years to one year, registered for passage to New England on the ship "Elizabeth and Ann". They settled at the new town of Watertown in June, 1635, when he bought a 16 acre "home stall" of a settler who was leaving with the group that established the settlement at Wethersfield, Conn. Before 1642 the town had granted him nine other parcels of land totalling 198 acres. He was made a Freeman of the colony, March 3, 1635-6; was appointed Constable of Watertown by the General Court of the Colony on June 1, 1641. He was Selectman continuously from 1638 to 1665 and in 1655 was Town Clerk. He died at Watertown, June 1, 1675, aged 84. His wife, Elinor, had died May 11, 1659. For the many branched tree of descent that has proceeded from this worthy man and Elinor, his wife, who faced with him the hardships of life in the new world, see Pierce's, "Whitney Genealogy". For his ancestry and the ancestry of us who claim him as our progenitor refer to Mellville's excellent and exhaustive, "Ancestry of John Whitney". It is with genuine pleasure that the writer offers to those who are descendants of John Whitney through his great-grandson, Enoch Whitney, this report of the data establishing our position as part of John Whitney's posterity.
