Otis Whitney applied for pension benefits as a War of 1812 veteran from Ontario County, New York on 12 June 1878. He testifies that he is 91 years old, and a resident of Seneca, Ontario County, NY. He testifies that he served as a Private in the company commanded by Captain Salma Stanley in a regiment of NY Militia. He enlisted at Seneca, Ontario Co., NY on or about the 1st of June 1812, continued in the service for the term of one month and was honorably discharged at Lewiston, NY on or about the 1st of July 1812.
Otis further testifies that after discharge he resided as follows: Town of Seneca, Ontario Co., NY and the Town of Phelps Ontario Co., NY. The following was his description at the time of his service: as near as he can recall, 5 feet, nine inches tall in height; brown hair; light complexion; blue eyes; age twenty-five years; occupation farmer, born in Conway, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts.
Otis has retained John S. Coe of Canandaigua, Ontario Co., NY as his attorney to prosecute the pension claim, and has not previously applied for a pension, but has received two Land Warrants. Otis’ post office address is Seneca Castle, Ontario Co., NY. The application was attested by Ami Whitney and Walter D. Wilson.
The file contains a Survivor’s Brief, which summarizes the contents of the claim. It adds the following information: In Bounty Land Claim 24874, this auditor reports August 29, 1855, Otis Whitney served in Capt. S. Stanley’s Co., NY Militia from 25 Sept til 29 Oct 1812. Bounty Land case 174.446 Certificate of discharge dated Lewiston October 18, 1812 signed by Joseph Hale, Major, Commander of the Rifle Battalion. Length of service: 35 days.
Otis Whitney was admitted for pension benefits on July 26, 1878, with a pension of 8 dollars per month from March 9, 1878, the date of passage of the Act. Bounty Land Claim 15440-120-55 had been issued. The pension was approved 31 July 1878.
On 30 April 1886 the pension agent reported to Syracuse, NY, General John C. Clark, Commissioner of Pensions:
- I hereby report that the name of Otis Whitney, who was a pensioner on the rolls of this Agency under Certificate No. 23835 and who was last paid at $8.00 to 4 December 1884 has been dropped because of order of Commissioner dated April 26, 1886.
