WHITNEY WHISTLER, Book Five, Volume Two, Summer 1985 The Whitneys of New Hampshire From Keene, New Hampshire we learn of the Mass. Land grant of 1734. Involved in this were the following: Jonathan Whitney, Benjamin Whitney. In 1840 Edward Whitney owned the Emerald House in Keene, New Hampshire. With the advance of the railroad places like this disappeared. Leonard Whitney of Keene, New Hampshire served in the Civil War Mary Whitney of Keene, New Hampshire died in Michigan in 1815, aged 87, the second wife of Rev. Jacob Bacon who died in Rowley, Mass. in 1787, aged 81. He left many descendants in the Plymouth, Mass. area, and in other parts of the country. Canterbury, New Hampshire Leonard Whitney married first __________Wheeler, and second Polly Elliot of Concord, Mass. He was in the Revolution. Their children were: Jeremiah who married Mary Wiggin in Concord, New Hampshire 10 Aug 1812 Silas; Sally who married Nathaniel Wiggin; Mary [Polly], born 18 July, 1787, married C. HENRY Beck, Jr. in 1805; Joseph; Catherine who in 1830 married William Harrison Foster in Concord, New Hampshire; Leavitt C. who was born 6 Dec. 1812; Dorcas, born 1818 married Joshua Parker; S. Elliott. Joseph Whitney of above married Hannah R. Snell of Dover, New Hampshire. He died 1 Sept, 1859, aged 50. Hannah Whitney died 26 Sept. of 1865, aged 57. Their children were; William who died 7 Oct. 1836 aged 4. Laurentea A. born 15 Aug. 1833, married Abram Batchelder of Loudon. Charles A. died 4 July, 1838, aged 3. Eliza A. married Joseph Porter Batchelder of Loudon. Katie A. married Anthony Cate. She died 14 Aug. 1873 aged 33. George died 27 Nov. 1866, aged 18. Amanda married a Mr. Frank. Leavitt C. Whitney, above, married Nancy S. Sargeant, born 10 March, 1817 in Loudon, and died in 1822. He died in 1899. Their children: George W. born 16 July 1841 resided in Boscowen and died their 1903. He had the following children; Mrs. Nellie M. Marden resided in Boscowen. Charles S. born 27 July, 1843, disappeared in the Civil War. Armentia, born 10 Dec. 1845 married in Boscowen in 1875, Francis H. Morse. S. Elliott Whitney born April, 1823 married Sarah F. West of Boscowen. He moved to Fisherville (now Penacook), then Plattsburg, New York. He died in Dec. of 1897. There were three children: Charlotte E, Ida Frances born in Penacook, married Frank Davis. She died 1895, aged 59. Katherine M. married James E. Riley, and she died in Somerville, Mass. in 1909. Amos Whitney married C. Polly Fletcher in 1839. She was born in 1800 George. W. Whitney married Victoria G. Moore in the 1850 s. Ida Whitney of Plattsburg, New York, married as the second wife, Frank S. Davis. She was born in 1856 and died in 1895. William Scott Whitney of Fall River, Mass. born 4 March, 1854 married Elizabeth Goodwin Haines, born in Biddleford 25 April, 1854. They resided in Lawrence, Mass. They had the following children: Lawrence Haines Whitney, born 11 July, 1884, and Mary Goodwin Whitney, born, 18 Feb. 1889, died 28 July 1890. Mabel Whitney of Milford, Mass. married Maitland P. Foster of Concord. He was the editor of The Berkshire Courier. The resided in Great Barrington, Mass. They had Paul Whitney Foster, and Karl Maitland Foster. Catherine Whitney married William Harrison Foster, born 1800. They had twins, Alanson and Alonzo. Haverhill, New Hampshire Augustus Whitney came to Haverhill as Register of Deeds in 1855. He was the mail agent between Springfield, Mass. and Newport, Vermont. He was a talented musician, and was a professional music teacher. He married one of the Currier girls of Wentworth, New Hampshire. A daughter born to them, moved to Winnipeg, Canada, when an adult and became a music teacher, in 1888. Littleton, New Hampshire Frank Whitney, farmer, married Fannie Farr of Chesterfield, New Hampshire. She died in Nashua in 1872. Abigail Whitney, born in Chesterfield, New Hampshire in 1785, married Titus Farr in 1806, born in Chesterfield in 1784. She died in Littleton, New Hampshire 5 April, 1862. She married for the second time to Joseph Parr. Persis Whitney born 10 Jan. 1718/19, daughter of Benjamin and Sarah [Barrett] Whitney, married Nathan Gooddell, born in Marlboro 10 June, 1709. They resided in Marlboro. Elmira Whitney, daughter of Benjamin, born in Marlboro 18 Jan. 1836, married 18 Nov. 1856 Charles Duane Tarbell, born in Rindge, New Hampshire 20 July, 1832. They moved to Southern Pines, North Carolina. Charles Whitney, farmer, married in 1873 Martha Stratton, born in Albany 1 Sept.1856. They resided in Bethlehem, New Hampshire. Hannah Whitney, daughter of Richard and Elizabeth [Sawtell] of Stow, married Samuel Parr of Littleton. J. Thomas Whitney, farmer, married Eliza Ann Morse, born Whitefield, 1 Jan. 1823. She died in Groveton, New Hampshire. Sarah M. Whitney, daughter of Jazaniah, born in St. Johnsbury, Vermont 11 Aug. 1804, died 22 April, 1883, married 26 March, 1823 Moses Baker Hatch, son of Joseph. They resided in Littleton, and moved to Bethlehem where he died in 1878. Louisa M. Whitney married 23 Nov. 1865, as the second wife, Simeon Bean Johnson, born in Gilmanton 25 Dec. 1795. Lois Whitney, born 1744, daughter of Salmon and Sarah Whitney, of Littleton, Mass. married 3 Oct. 1764, Colonel Joseph Bellows. She died in Walpole 26 March, 1834. Sanbornton, New Hampshire Abijah F Whitney of Walcott, Vermont married Rosette Lorinda Smith, born 1845 of West Topsham, Vermont. They had Lillian, born in the town of Barre, Vermont in 1870. Amos L. Whitney married Jemima Swazey Lane, born 9 Jan, 1827, died in 1862. Had Inez, Blance, born 10 Sept. 1861 in Lowell, Mass. Mrs. Anna Hale Whitney of Grafton, New Hampshire, married Jonathan Person Sanborn, 12 Jan. 1879. Sidney Whitney of Boston, hotel keeper, married in June 1865 Abigail D. Tolman, born 13 Dec. 1840. They had: Annie Bertha 7 Oct. 1868; Mattie Louise 28 Nov. 1870; died 6 Sept 1871; Maud Elizabeth 9 Sept. 1873. Jophanus Henderson Whitney of Medford married 5 Dec. 1869 Martha Lydia Ann Flanders, born 15 July, 1848. He was wounded in the Civil War. He was a town constable, cigar manufacturer. Their children were: Mary Evely born 19 Dec. 1871 died 24 Dec. 1872; Orville Jophanus born 6 Oct. 1873; Bertha Jessamine born 31 Dec. 1874. Harriett Neale Whitney of New London, Ct. married Oct 1867 Erwin Gerard Cate, born 14 March, 1841, a farmer and blacksmith, injured in the Civil War. Joseph Henry Whitney, married 17 June, 1875, Carrie Wood Clay, born 8 Aug. 1839 in Gilmanton, New Hampshire. He was born 14 Sept. 1822 in Boston, Mass. Lavinia M. Whitney of Manchester, married 21 July, 1868 Plumer B. Lacks, born 3 July, 1844 in Bethlehem. She was born in Lyndon, Vermont, 16 Nov. 1844. Richard Whitney married Harriet Swan, born 3 March 1792. They settled in Methuen. Salisbury, New Hampshire At the Merrimack County Conference of Churches (Congregational) held 1828 at Salisbury, Deacon James Whitney attended. Preachers in this area were at the Union Meeting House where John Whitney attended. The Literary Adelphi Society had as a member Samuel Whitney. Rochester, New Hampshire Frank Eugene Whitney, born Westminster, Mass. 9 Sept. 1853 attended Dartmouth. He was a graduate of the School of Medicine of the University of New York. He went into practice in 1881. He married Grace M. Chase 27 Nov. 1883. The Free Will Baptist Society of the area had as a member George W. Whitney, Pastor from Dec. 1848 to 1853. Weare, New Hampshire Adah C Whitney married Harry H Simons, postmaster of Oil Mill 1880_1890. In the Corliss burial ground in the area is buried Eben S. Whitney. Imri S. Whitney, prof of music, Manchester, New Hampshire 1847, taught in many places in the area. Preachers in the area of Weare-Elder John Whitney 1809. Taxpayers of the 1810 census-John Whitney. Mill owner in this time frame was John Whitney. It was at Clement Mill. He sold the mill to Jonathan Philbrick in 1814. Newport, New Hampshire Jazaniah Whitney born 1 Sept 1780 came from St Johnsbury, Vermont in 1820 amd married Rebecca, daughter of Elisha Whipple. They had: Sally M. born 11 Aug. 1804 married Moses B. Hatch. Orlando born 26 March, 1806 married Eliza A. Canton. Orange born 8 May, 1808. Lambert born 10 Oct. 1812, physician in Olean, New York, married Sally Senter and had Russell Lambert Jr. (physician in San Francisco), James, Frances. Orange Whitney son of Jazaniah, born 8 May 1808, farmer of Thatcher Hill, boot and shoe man. He built Phoenix Hall. He married Emeline Harris. They had: Goerge F. born 9 Feb. 1839 Calvin H. born 6 Dec. 1840 Charles H. born 6 March 1843 Albert 0. born 10 March 1850 Amanda L. born 29 May 1854 George F. Whitney, son of Orange Whitney, born 9 Feb. 1839 lived at Thatcher Hill. He was a selectman, representative, and a Baptist. He married Azuba Wheeler. They had Frank G. born 11 March, 1865. Calvin H. Whitney, son of Orange, born 6 Dec. 1840, merchant, married Laura Dnerson of Chelsea, Vt. Albert 0. Whitney, son of Orange, born 10 March, 1850, was a clerk in his brother Calvin s store. He went to Boston, and later returned to run the store. He married 11 Dec. 1875 Hattie Burroughs of Alstead, New Hampshire, who was born 10 Nov. 1856. Stephen Whitney born 10 June 1792, came from Claremont, New Hampshire, and settled on a farm. He married Sarah Bailey, and had the following children: Edwin R. born 19 Nov. 1825, married Prudence S. Corner. Sarah F. born 25 Dec. 1827, married Barney C. Whipple, and resided in Croydon, New Hampshire. Stephen P. born 9 April, 1830, married Mary J. Pollard, had child Stephen George F. born 12 August, 1832. Mary E. born 14 Sept. 1834, married Hon Edmund Blake. George F. Whitney, farmer, married Ann E. Durgin. Upon her death he married, Mrs. George Comstock, who died 8 June, 1878, aged 45 years. The children were: Clara M. born 4 Feb. 1855. Mary Lillie, born Oct. 1856, graduate of Tilton Female Academy 1878, with high honors. Newfield, New Hampshire Martha Whitney married John G. Folsom. They resided in Winchester. Keene, New Hampshire Resident members of the First Congregational Church 1877: Charles H. Whitney, Lucy C. Whitney, Charles R. Whitney George Whitney brought a letter from his church in Nelson, N.H. as of May, 1867. Nancy Whitney brought a letter from her church in Nelson, N.H. as of the same time. Eugalia Whitney showed proof of faith in July, 1866. Thomas H. Whitney showed proof of faith in Sept. 1867. Lucy C. Whitney had a letter from her church in Nelson, N.H. in 1874. Charles H. Whitney had a letter from Nelson, N.H. at same time. Lancaster, New Hampshire James Whitney, 1812 on the roster of Capt. John W. Week s Co. Silas Whitney, 1812 on the roster of Capt.John W. Some of the people in this town were castigated by the government as they sold beef to the Canadian govt. when there was a War on at the time between the United States and Canada. Timothy Whitney had 26 acres of land in this area in 1765_1770. V. V. Whitney owned the Diamond Granite Works (Directory of 1896). There was a large quarry of Kilkenny granite from the Kilkenny Mts. near Northumberland. It was a beautiful stone of greenish, grey hue, and much in demand in the United States for public buildings. We have not established the name that goes with the initials "V.V." [NOTE] KITTERY, MAINE Benjamin, son of John and Elinor of Watertown, born 6 June, 1632, in Watertown, Mass. married Jane _________. She died 14 Nov. 1690. The second wife was Mary Poor, whom he married 11 April, 1695 of Marlboro. Their son John, born in York, Maine in 1679, married Lettice Ford, the daughter of John Ford of Kittery, Maine. The children were the following: Mary Whitney, born 12 March, 1705_6, married Thomas Edwards 16 Oct. 1723. Samuel Whitney, born 5 May, 1707, married Lydia Spooner in 1730 of Brunswick, Maine. Elizabeth Whitney, born 7 May, 1709. Hannah Whitney, born 17 April, 1710 married Thomas Fernald, Jr. 16 Nov. 1733. Mercy Whitney, no information on her. Mehitable published to Isaac Wincall 1737. Dr. John Whitney, born 14 May 1719, married Margaret, the daughter of Josiah Coffin of Sherburn, Nantucket.; he married as second wife, Hephzibah, daughter of Hezekiah Adams of York, Maine. Benjamin, born 22 May, 1725, married Mercy Hinckley of Brunswick, Maine. Nathaniel Whitney, probably son of Nathaniel and Sarah (Ford) Whitney of York, Maine, had a wife Hannah and a daughter Tabitha, born 16 March, 1745-6. They settled in Gorham, Maine. John Whitney and Susannah Smith married 14 Jan. 1730_1. Augusta, Maine David W. Whitney, born 1817, grandson of Nathan, son of Abizah, born in Lisbon 1794, located his family on Church Hill in 1832. He went to New Orleans and died there in 1866. David married Philean, daughter of Luther Church. She died leaving a son John W. Whitney. David then married Olena, daughter of Isaac Church, granddaughter of Samuel and Ruby (Pettingill) Church, and had Benjamin C. Whitney of Salem, Mass; Edwin W. Whitney; and Alice M. Whitney who became a teacher. Randolph, Maine Sumner Wallace Whitney, son of Phineas, born in Jay, Maine, 1845, was in the Civil War. He was a painter, lived in Randolph, Maine. He married Eliza S. Metcalf, the daughter of Richard. They had Lillian Whitney who married Charles Blair, and Lester A. Whitney. Grafton, Maine Samuel Whitney, Jr. from Samuel, Nathaniel, Nathaniel, John, John, born 23 Sept. 1739, married in 1762 Phebe Harnington. They resided in Grafton, Mass. and also in Marlboro, Vermont. John Whitney (from Simon, Timothy) Born in Petersham 11 Dec. 1805, married on 1 Jan. 1838 to Harriet F. Bruce, born 3 August, 1819. Children born to them were: Helen B. born 3 Oct. 1838, married Cyrus D. Aldrich, and died 4 May, 1873, and Lucy H. born 27 May, 1841, unmarried. Josiah Whitney from the Second Church in Pomfret, Ct. now Brooklyn, 1774. Second Baptist Church N.G. Whitney was a member 10 Feb. 1859. Currying business carried on in Grafton, New Hampshire by John Whitney, who also made boots, 1836. He had a business on South Street until 1870. In 1790 Whitney and Dorr bought a business, coming there from Boston. BLANDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS The town and street auctioneer of the area was Barnabas Whitney. He owned Boies s Tavern or Inn. The old Hatch and Noble Tavern across the street from the Tavern was the home of Paul and Barnabas Whitney. Complaints of assault against Barnabas Whitney were lodged in 1805, and he was fined $1.00 and costs. On 16 Nov. 1805, Ajax Whitney of Bladford complained of assault by John Blair, who was fined $1.00 and costs. FITCHBURG, MASSACHUSETTS Rev. Peter Whitney, published "History of Worcester County" in 1793. Abijah Whitney lived there in 1802_3. Andrew Whitney opened music rooms above the bank there in 1848. B.J. Whitney was a jeweler there in 1857. Pliny Whitney had a business there in 1815. From this town went a missionary named Samuel Whitney, who was a teacher who accompanied the famous Asa Thurston to the Hawaiian Islands. In 1819 they were 5 months going around the horn to the Islands. During this time, Samuel Whitney occupied his time by pair. ting the ship tangling from a bosun s chair over the water. When the ship was under full sail he fell overboard, and had to be rescued. Abigail Whitney died 31 May, 1826, aged 82. She was taken to the Lunenburg North Burying Grounds. Abijah Whitney, born in Watertown, died 4 Dec. 1859, aged 83, and rests in the same burial grounds. There is no date of their marriage, but their children were: Charles S. died 13 April, 1833, aged 17 Susan died 27 May, 1826, aged 5 Joseph died 19 Sept. 1825, aged 2 Benjamin Whitney of this city was born Oct. 1814, and died in Leominster July, 1878. Mary E (Butters), wife of Benjamin, died 4 Oct. 1840, aged about 25. In memory of Relief (Stearns) Whitney, wife of Stephen Whitney, who died 17 Jan. 1803 in her 55th year. Her husband Stephen Whitney, born 25 April 1743, died 4 April, 1833. He was from Watertown in 1783. Susannah, daughter of Stephen and Relief, died 5 Dec. 1807, aged 18. Zachariah Whitney, son died 14 Nov. 1781 in his tenth year. Zachariah Whitney, son died 9 April, 1828, aged 81, and wife Betsey died on 22 Oct. 1826, aged 71. Lunenburg South, Burial Ground Albert Whitney died 26 Feb. 1864, aged 50½ years. CANTERBURY, MASSACHUSETTS Abram Whitney, a member of the Shaker Community which was a large one in Canterbury, stayed with this group from 1820_1830. He taught music and had been a member of the Shaker Community in Shirley, Mass. He taught extensively the interpretation of Shaker Hymns. Israel C. Whitney homesteaded in district #3 where he settled after the Revolutionary War. This was in Palletborough. Joseph Whitney voted against capital punishment in 1844 in this town. In 1851 a new meeting house was built, and Joseph Whitney gave $25.00 for the upkeep of the church. IN Baptist District School #4_ the highway supervisor was Leonard Whitney, probably the father of Joseph. Leavitt Whitney was associated with buildings 27 and 28 of this district. Leonard Whitney was also a surveyor in 1807. WOODBURY AND PLYMOUTH COUNTIES IOWA A.G. Whitney, attorney of Sioux City, was born in Hardin County, Iowa in 1864, educated at Cornell College, Iowa, and became an attorney in 1859. He was also a congregationalist. Daniel Whitney, in 1885 belonged to the Cosmos Lodge # 470. He was born in Worcester, Mass. 22 Jan, 1825. son of Timothy and Rowena (Brigham) Whitney of Mass. His father Timothy farmed in Mass. until his death in 1856. Daniel s mother died in 1839. Daniel went to California in 1851 from Mass. and worked in the mines. In 1855 he went to Illinois, where he remained until 1861. He was in the Civil War. After his service in the War he removed to Kendall County, Il. where he remained until 1865, when he moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Here he lived until 1884 when he removed to Plymouth County, Iowa, where he died. WISCONSIN After the railroad went through Wisconsin, Daniel Whitney of that area built a shot tower process foundry for which he was famous. He founded Helena Station in 1835 which is in the area of Dodgevile and Mineral Point. He was an entrepreneur famous in Wisconsin. On the upper Wisconsin River was Whitney Rapids. His headquarters were at Green Bay. He sent a party of workers to Winnebago country to make shingles, and was ordered off the reservation by the Major of those parts, Major Twiggs. of Fort Winneba In 1831 he secured a permit from the War Dept. to erect a sawmill and cut timber on Winnebago lands on the upper Wisconsin. He built a mill at Whitney s Rapids. The Menominee tribes granted privileges to Whitney for land north of Point Bas. In two years many lumbermen and productive mills were established in Grand Rapids, Wisconsin near Steven s Point. Daniel Whitney was one of the notable men in the history of the state. ONEIDA COUNTY, NEW YORK Colonel S.S. Whitney, born 21 Dec. 1814, son of Jared and Patience (Husted) Whitney. His grandfather Samuel was an early settler of Kirkland and farmed the same land that Colonel Whitney farmed years later. Colonel Whitney was in the State Militia and was a respected citizen of Oneida County. JEFFERSON COUNTY, NEW YORK Watertown, New York,_G.R. Whitney had a grocery store at 36 Moulton street in 1860_1880. In Henderson, New York T. O. Whitney married Martha Wood in Ellisburgh 12 March, 1840, where they lived until his death. He was an assistant revenue assessor 1863-7. In Watertown, New York, Horace Whitney came from Vermont in 1830 and settled in Le Ray. He died in 1846. His widow Mary married his brother Riley Whitney. George R. Whitney, son of Horace was born in Le Ray 12 March, 1844, and lived there until he was 18, when he decided to purchase a farm. This he did until 1875 when he decided to move to the city. THE WHITNEYS OF THE SOUTH Finally we have found some material dealing with the Whitney family of Va. and other Southern states. We found a Bible in the DAR records that might help someone with genealogy concerning this family. Edward Anderton Kritzer, only child of Edna Anderton Kritzer and John Edward Kritzer, and only grandson of Clara Holland Anderton was born December 4-1926 and graduated from West Point June 8_1948 Notarized October 17, 1955 All spellings, punctuations, etc. as they are written in the Bible THE DESCENDANTS OF DR. ELISHA AND SALLY (BROWN) WHITNEY This line descends from Elisha, Sr. the old Revolutionary soldier who answered the call to Lexington and Concord as a Minuteman. He left the town of Stock-bridge, Mass. for the uncertain lands of the Wyoming Valley where hesettled in Wysox, Pa. He was my great-great-great-grandfather. This is his son, Dr. Elisha Whitney, graduate in medicine of Hamilton College, New York; said to have the best library in all the Wyoming Valley. of Pa. He married Sally Brown, the daughter of Humphrey Brown and Hannah (Dodge) Brown. Both Dodge and Brown families were from Revolutionary parents, that we claim as Supplementary DAR ancestors. The children of Dr. Elisha and Sally Whitney were: Ellen Theresa, born 19 Feb. 1920, died 19 March, 1901. She married Daniel Coolbaugh. James Monroe, born 21 May, 1822, died 21 Oct. 1869, married Mrs. Edith Fawkes Woodfield. Erasmus Darwin, born 4 May, 1824, died 8 July, 1898, married Laura Bixby, 2 Nov. 1847. She was born 22 Aug. 1827, and died 28 March, 1920. Elisha, born 6 March. 1826, died 18 July. 1860, married Cornelia Rugg. Sallie, born abt. 1828, died 1915, married James Lyman Morgan. Esther, born 1830, died 7 May, 1889, married Harrison Lamb. Mary Elizabeth, born 19 March, 1833, died 1889, married Jesse Allen. Ebenezer, born 1836, died 1901, married Addie Blasdell. Joseph Marie, born 28 May, 1844, married Priscilla Ann Straw, about 1869, and lived at Nevada, Iowa until 1913, moved to Whittier, Ca. His wife was killed in an auto accident in l9l5. Joseph had a stroke of apoplexy on 8 Oct. 1925, but lived until 18 Nov. 1927 at his home in Montebello, Ca. Erasmus Darwin and Laura (Bixby) Whitney Erasmus Darwin Whitney, the third child of Dr. Elisha and Sally Whitney, born in Wyalusing, Pa. His sister and her husband migrated to Illinois in 1844, and he followed in 1845. He worked on a building called the Town House at Elida, Illinois now known as Westfield Corners, and the Town House at Byron, Illinois. He married Laura Bixby, youngest daughter of Dr. Levi and Lucinda (Burch) Bixby the 2 Nov. 1847. She was born in Royalton, New York 22 August, 1827. Her ancestor Joseph Bixby came to Mass. from England in 1636. Erasmus Whitney bought the contract of John Dement for 160 acres of land in Seward Twp., Winnebago County, at $1.25 an acre in five yearly payments of $40.00, from the government. He bought a house in Elida, Illinois and moved it to the land he had purchased, hauling it there with a team of eleven yoke of oxen. He hauled the wheat he raised with a team of oxen to the markets in Chicago. His seven children were born on the farm and in the house he had moved there. He died there 8 July, 1899. Mrs. Whitney went to Roswell, New Mexico in 1899, living with her two daughters until her son Newton E. Whitney moved to a farm at East Grand Plains, southeast of Roswell. She lived with him until she passed away 28 March, 1920. Darwin and Laura are interred in the family plot at Twelve Mile Grove, Pecatonica, Illinois. Their children were: Wilbur Fisk, born 1 June, 1848, died 28 Feb. 1937 Cleora, born 3 April, 1850, died 5 May, 1872 Alta C. born 5 Sept. 1853, died 1 April, 1855 Emerson Bixby, born 24 April, 1856, died 14 May, 1932 Sarah Lucinda, born 4 April, 1860, died 7 April, 1946 Newton Albert, born 16 Dec. 1861, died 25 Sept 1949 Mary Ellen, born 10 Nov. 1870, died 14 March, 1958 Wilbur Fisk Whitney Farmer, merchant, postmaster, born 1848, died in 1937 at Byron, Illinois. He married Lizzie Bunion 3 March, 1871 at Middle Creek Presbyterian Church. Lizzie was born in Hanover, Germany 27 Jan. 1852, and died 28 April 1939 at Byron, Illinois. She is interred in Middle Creek Cemetary. Mr. Whitney when a boy, learned to barter and trade. He was a great woodsman, and as a hobby looked for arrowheads and other artifacts. After 1900 he went to Lake Arthur, New Mexico, using the "Desert Claim Law" that allowed him to pump water from the Pecos River. He owned land near Roswell, New Mexico. He had a hardware store when in Byron, Illinois, and had been the postmaster there, when he went back there in 1914. Children: Eddie, born 1 March, 1876, died 17 Jan. 1878, interred at Twelve Mile Grove. Frederick Armon, born 18 Jan. 1879 in Byron, Illinois, died 1 Jan. 1927 in Byron, Illinois. He married Latetia Heinly 4 June, 1902 in Byron, Illinois. Mildred Helen, born 23 July, 1904, Byron, Illinois, married Fred. E. Vietmeier 6 August, 1927 in Byron, Illinois. Harold Edward, born 17 August, 1908 in Roswell, New Mexico, died 8 May, 1948, interred in Byron, Illinois; he married Margaret Cecil Loveland 30 Nov. 1941 at Rockford, Illinois. She was born 8 March, 1913 at Rockford. They had the following children: Frederick Arthur, Virginia Louise, and Margaret Mary. Frederick Earl, born 13 April 1911 in Roswell, New Mexico, married Irene Marshall 6 Sept. 1936 in Chicago, Illinois, who was born 12 Sept. 1913. Their children were: Arlene Joyce who married Wayne Alden Henson, and others. Laura Annie born 20 Nov, 1881, married John William Cooper 27 Jan. 1902. He was born 8 Nov. 1878 in Ogle County, Illinois, and died 25 June, 1938, and interred in Byron, Illinois family cemetary. They had: Wilbur Philip born 3 Dec. 1910 in Byron, Illinois, who married first Ann Louise Wettengel, 31 August, 1940 in Rockford, Illinois. She died 7 March, 1942, and he married Helen Butkus Stockburger 2 Sept. 1950 in Byron, Illinois. She died 2 March, 1955, and he married for the third time Margaret Marine Eyster on 16 Feb. 1956 at Byron, Illinois. He had one son, John Anthony Whitney. Levi Wilbur Whitney, born 13 Nov. 1889 in Byron, Illinois, married Louise Mix on 13 June, 1911 in Elgin, Illinois. She was born 3 March, 1888 in Byron, Illinois, and died 2 July, 1958 at Beardstown, Illinois. Internment was in Oak Ridge Cemetary, Beardstown, Illinois. Children: Walter Darwin, and Helen Louise. Emerson Bixby Whitney son of Erasmus Darwin and Laura (Bixby) Whitney Emerson was born 24 April, 1856, and died 14 May 1932, married Sarah Martha Bently 11 Oct. 1876. She was born 7 Jan. 1859, and died 27 May, 1913; interred at Twelve Mile Grove, Illinois in the family plot. Emerson Whitney was born in the house that his father had moved from Westfield Corners to the farm in Seward Twp with the many yoke of oxen. He grew up during the Civil War. In the 1880 s the Illinois Central Railroad was put through his farm after he gave them a right-of_way. He raised fine horses, and owned a string of famous trotting horses. His children were; William Darwin, born 24 July, 1877, and died 18 Nov. 1947, married Julia Estella Cook 2 July, 1904. She was born 13 Nov, 1882, and they had children. Frank Emerson, born 14 Dec. 1879, died 26 April, 1958, married Effie May Levantia Carson in 1903. She was born in 1879 in Fairmont, Nebraska, and died 20 August, 1954. They had children Gladys Elinor, born 1904 in Seward Illinois, and had one son Harold Stuart Piper. Clifford Ellsworth, born 23 Dec. 1907. Mabel Ida, born 20 August, 1881, died 13 Jan. 1932, married Claude William Conger, born 5 Feb. 1902. They had; Clarence Emerson Conger, born 29 Oct. 1902, married 26 July, 1922 Ruth Kreiger, and married for the second time, Alyse Frances Jennings 28 June, 1927 in Ames, Iowa. Artellisa, born Sept. 1883, died 11 June, 1897. Homer Elmer, born 24 July, 1886, married Mary Kathryn Kline on 23 Feb. 1916. They had Charles Emerson, Maxine Shirley, and Richard Desmond. Mary Elvena, born 17 August, 1889, died 6 Oct. 1943, taught school, and kept house for her father until his death. She was the founder of the Whitney picnic that took place every year in Illinois. It was held in the Whitney woods, near the farm of Frank Osborn, in Middle Creek. Carrie, born 4 Sept. 1892, married Frederick Cleveland 14 Oct. 1914, born 16 Dec. 1892 in Seward, Illinois. They had Helen Marie, Seymour Emerson, and Mary Louise. Harold Bentley, born 12 Dec. 1895, married Ada Elizabeth Hazzard 12 March, l918, and had Laura Lavern, Donald Eugene, Ruth Elizabeth, Sarah Edna. Sarah Lucinda Whitney, child of Erasmus Darwin and Laura (Bixby) Whitney She was born in Seward Twp. Winnebago County, Illinois 4 April, 1860, and died 7 April, 1946. She married 30 Nov. 1881 Herbert P. Hobson, born 25 May, 1860, and died 14 Dec. 1944. They were interred in Roswell Cemetary, Roswell, New Mexico. They owned a meat market and a farm in Seward, Illinois. In 1898 they removed to Wichita Falls, Texas, and then to San Antonio, and then on to the Pecos Valley in 1899. He bought a desert claim, and built a cold storage plant and creamery in Roswell, New Mexico. This building became a post office in 1912. The first auto mail route in the United States was from this post office to Torrende, New Mexico. Children: Albert Louis, born 31 August, 1884, married Daisy Bell Spickler 6 Jan. 1909, and had Eugene, Laura Margaret, Hazel J. and Edward. Nell B. born 22 Dec. 1886, married Donald Finley July, 1906. They had Marjorie, Howard and Dorothy Owen. Emory J. born 1 May, 1889, married Sarah Owen in Roswell, New Mexico 28 July, 1910. Their children were Richard Owen, Martha Katherine, Dorothy Jean, Joseph Herbert and Sarah Eleanor. Howard Darwin, born 1 August, 1889, died 14 Nov. 1905. Laura Alta, born 16 March, 1891, married James Ballard, and Jimmie Kennedy whom she divorced. Herbert P. born 11 April, 1896, died 7 June, 1896. Newton Elbert Whitney, son of Erastus Darwin and Laura (Bixby) Whitney Newton Whitney, born on the family farm in Winnebago County, Illinois 16 Dec. 1861, died 25 Sept. 1949. He married Elizabeth A. Carter 31 March, 1886. Both were born in Roswell, New Mexico. Mr. Whitney bought a farm in 1888, and operated near his father's place. In 1905 he sold the farm, rented out the old home and moved to Roswell, New Mexico. His children were: Thomas Elbert, born 18 Feb. 1887, died 7 March, 1920, married Corinne Day in Jan. 1918. Ralph Emerson, born 8 Nov. 1889, married Florence Walters at Roswell, New Mexico, 1 Sept. 1914. They went back to the old farm in Illinois where they were still living in 1961. They had Raymond E, Walter E, Elizabeth A, and Orlo K. Ross 0. born 7 Sept 1891, married Ruth Carlyn Pershing 11 August, 1920. Lois A, born 29 August, 1893, married Robert Lee McAllister 19 May, 1912. They had Elbert Wesley, Robert Lowell, Raymond Russell, Daisy Bell, Emery Lee, and Louis Whitney. Marion Eva, born 21 June, 1895, married Frederick C. Fritz 18 August, 1929. Darwin Milton, born 6 Feb. 1897, married Ethel Blomberg 27 June, 1924, and had Milton Leroy, Mildred Edith, and Kenneth Darwin. Emory Herbert, born 15 May, 1900, married Jewell Wallace 18 March, 1923, and had Herbert Emory. Ellen Walter, born 16 August, 1904, married Irene Santheson 2 Nov. 1931 in Carlsbad, New Mexico; he married for the second time to Clara Belle Bush Buchanan 2 May, 1957 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. THE ANCESTRY OF ELI WHITNEY, INVENTOR John, John, Nathaniel, Nathaniel, and then Eli Whitney, Sr., born 1741, and died 1807, son and tenth child of Nathaniel, brother of our 4th gr._grandfather Joshua Whitney of Spencer, Mass (1714_1786). Eli Married Elizabeth Fay in Jan. 1765. They had the following children: Eli Whitney, Jr. inventor of the Cotton Gin, and Gun Maker, born 8 Dec. 1765, died 8 Jan. 1825, married Henrietta Francis 6 Jan. 1817, who was born 1785 and died in 1870. They had; Francis Edwards, born 13 Nov. 1817 Elizabeth Fay, born March, 1819 Eli Jr., born 24 Nov. 1820, graduate of Princeton 1841 Susan Edwards, born 1821, died 21 months later Elizabeth Fay married Elihu Brake and had Phibos, Elihu and Eli Whitney Blake Benjamin remained on the farm Josiah born 1770 settled in Boston QUERIES Linus Whitney, found in the Genesee County, New York census for 1840, with one child, a boy under 10. He disappears from the census, and is not found in the 1850 for that state or any other. His son, John Linus was killed by stagecoach robbers while he was on his way to the gold rush in California. That is the reason for the publication. For Mary Snedeker; looking throuqh Dutch records we found Hendrik Garret-son (Henry or Harry Garrison), and Ulster County, New York has many of that family. I suggest that your Harry Garrison Whitney is from that area. We did find that Whitneys had married into those families around Albany and Kingston, New York. Editor.
