Lynn was formed from the area known as Saugust in 1637. In 1644, the Lynn Village section was split off as the new town of Reading. In 1782, the Lynn End part was established as the new town of Lynnfield. Part was set up as the new town of Saugus in 1815. Another part was made into the new town of Swampscott in 1852. Still another part was made into Nahant in 1853.
