Abel7 Whitney (James6, Samuel5, Samuel4, Nathaniel3, John2, John1), son of James6 and Eunice (Johnson) Whitney, was born 23 Sep 1797, Newtown, CT,[1] and died after 1880.
He married, 1 Oct 1821, Bridgewater, CT, Elvira Triphosa Beecher, daughter of Raphael and Hannah (Ruggles) Beecher. She was born 28 Mar 1802, Bridgewater, CT.
He is a blacksmith by trade and has held a number of public offices in Ohio; resided Newtown, CT and Wakeman, OH.
Phoenix says the following:
- "Abel Whitney, b. in Newtown, Conn., 23 Sept. 1797; a blacksmith; married, 1 Oct 1821, at her father's house in Bridgewater, Conn., by Rev. Abner Brundage, pastor of the Congregational Church in Brookfield, Conn., to Elvira Tryphosa Beecher, who was born in Bridgewater, 28 March 1802, dau. of Raphael and Hannah (Ruggles) Beecher. They lived in Newtown (where he was an assessor, in 1847) till 7 May 1849, and then moved to Wakeman, Ohio, where they were living in Sept 1875."

Shelton; b. 3 Jan 1820, Oxford, CT; s. p.; They settled in Wakeman, and were living there, without children, Sep 1875. iii. Ruggles Nahum Whitney, b. 6 Apr 1826, Newtown, CT; m. Jane Sherman. iv. Lewis Becar Whitney, b. 9 Feb 1828, Newtown, CT; d. 5 or 6 Aug 1846, Newtown, CT, aged 18 years, of dysentery;[3][4] buried in Newtown Cemetery. v. Hannah Maria Whitney, b. 31 Jul 1832, Newtown, CT; m. 30 Mar 1856, Wakeman, OH, Leverett Benedict Hill, b. 11 Jun 1831, Wakeman, OH; Soon after their marriage, they removed, with his mother and her family, to Tabor, IA, arriving there 17 May 1856, having made the whole journey of nine hundred miles by waggon, in six weeks. They were still living at Tabor, Feb 1873; but in July of the same year, were reported at Larkspur, CO. vi. Charles Philo Whitney, b. 23 May 1834, Bridgewater, CT; m. Celinda E. Ennes. vii. Frederick Augustus Whitney, b. 23 Jan 1837, Bridgewater, CT; m. Fanny Maria Shoff. viii. Theodore Beecher Whitney, b. 21 Apr 1840, Bridgewater, CT; m. Mary Elizabeth Parker. ix. Jane Amelia Whitney, b. 2 May 1842, Newtown, CT; m. 24 Aug 1863, Wakeman, OH, William Augustine Canfield, b. 27 May 1841, Wakeman, OH. They settled in Wakeman, and were living there in 1874. He was a soldier in the war of 1861.
