Abraham4 Whitney (Joseph3, John2, Henry1), son of Joseph3 and Hannah (Hoyt) Whitney,[1] was born 23 Feb 1723/4, Norwalk, CT,[2] and died about 1804 or 1805, Norwalk, CT.[3]

He married, 23 Dec 1750, Huntington, Long Island, N. Y., Anne Plumb, by Rev. Ebenezer Prime,[4] daughter of Samuel and Anne (Roe) Plumb.[5] She was born about 1730, Huntington, Long Island, N. Y.,[6] and died about 1806, Norwalk, CT.[7]

Phoenix says the following:[8]

... a tailor and farmer; married, 23 Dec. 1750, at Huntington, L.I., by Rev. Ebenezer Prime, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, to Anne Plumb, of Huntington. They settled in Norwalk, and there died; he, about 1804, or 1805; she, at the house of her son, John Whitney, in Pudding Lane, about 1806. They were buried in St. Paul's Churchyard.

i. Samuel5 Whitney, b. 28 Sep 1752, Norwalk, CT;[9] m.(1) ----- -----; m.(2) Anne Guire.
ii. Stephen Whitney, b. 20 Jan 1754, Norwalk, CT;[10] m. Esther Jarvis.
iii. Archibald Whitney, b. 23 Jan 1756, Norwalk, CT;[11] is thought to have died in childhood.[12]
iv. Ann Whitney, b. 27 Jan 1758, Norwalk, CT;[13] probably died young.[14]
v. Susan Whitney, b. 2 Jan 1760, Norwalk, CT;[15] married ----- Rich, and lived at Horse Neck, Greenwich, Conn. Possibly she was the Susan Rich, wife of Lemuel Rich, who joined the Congregational Church at Greenwich, 18 Oct. 1789. Nothing more is known.[16]
vi. Abraham Whitney, b. 2 Apr 1762, Norwalk, CT;[17] probably died in infancy.[18]
vii. John Whitney, b. 17 May 1764, Norwalk, CT;[19] m. Anne Fox.
viii. Sarah Whitney, b. 27 Jul 1766, Norwalk, CT;[20] went to visit her brother, Samuel Whitney, at St. John, N.B., and there met, and married, Capt. James Grigor, a native of Scotland. They settled in St. John, where he died; whereupon she returned to Norwalk, and there spent the remainder of her life. Having no children, she first willed her property to St. Paul's parish in Norwalk, for the purpose of founding a school in which good boys might be educated for missionaries. She was persuaded by the rector of St. Paul's, Rev. William Cooper Mead, D.D., to change her will; giving $15000 to Trinity College, in Hartford, Conn., as a foundation for the Brownell professorship, $3000 to St. Paul's parish, Norwalk, and a residuary legacy, which realized $10000, to the Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society of the Protestant Episcopal Church, as a fund for the benefit of domestic missions. At her grave, near the front entrance of St. Paul's Churchyard, a handsome freestone monument, which also commemorates her sisters, Polly and Mercy Whitney, bears the following inscription: "In memory of a Christian woman, who gave herself and all that she had to Christ and the Church; Mrs. Sarah Grigor, born July 27, 1766; died April 6, 1855. 'She hath done what she could.'"[21]
ix. Polly Whitney, b. 2 Jan 1769, Norwalk, CT;[22] died in Norwalk, 6 Feb. 1844, unmarried, and was buried in St. Paul's Churchyard, Norwalk.[23]
x. Mercy Whitney, b. 4 Apr 1771, Norwalk, CT;[24] died in Norwalk, 1 Ap. 1855, unmarried, and was buried in St. Paul's Churchyard, Norwalk.[25]
