Dr. Albert Beach8 Whitney (Elijah7, Elijah6, Thomas5, Thomas4, Eleazer3, Thomas2, John1), son of Elijah7 and Cornelia L. (Pratt) Whitney, was born 11 Dec 1837, Hudson, OH, and died 30 Aug 1909, Manhattan, NY, aged 71 years.[1]
He married, 24 Nov 1874, Cordelia C. Hurd, of Brooklyn, NY. She was born about 1842, NY, and died after 1880.
Albert B. Whitney, second son of Elijah Whitney, was born in Hudson, OH, where his father was engaged as a Christian minister, when he returned east and settled in the city of Providence. He received in this latter city his boyhood's education. At the age of 14 he came with his father and the family to Brooklyn, NY, and then to New York City, his education being continued in the grammar schools of these two cities and then in Columbia college, where he graduated in 1861. Two years later he graduated in medicine, his father having been a practicing physician in New York. He has practiced medicine from his early student days till the present time and is still continuing it. Has been connected with the Northwestern Dispensary of New York City and with the Eclectic Medical Society, and professor in one of its colleges; is fond of literature and learning of his profession, and has not held public offices or other stations, except a railroad directorship for a short time. His intention is to continue his profession as his life work; resided New York City, NY, 148 W. 77th St.
Obituary, New York Times, 31 Aug 1909, p. 7:
- Dr. Albert Beach Whitney.
- Dr. Albert Beach Whitney of 218 West Seventy-ninth Street, who practiced medicine for forty-five years In this city and had written a number of treatises on tumor and cancer, died yesterday at his home of pneumonia. He was 72 years old. Dr. Whitney was born in Westboro, Mass. He graduated from Columbia University in 1861, and afterward from the Philadelphia Medical School. He was a member of the Medico-Legal Society and of the Republican Club. Mrs. Mary Louise Lanaeau, a daugnter, who left [ ] last week on La Provence, has not arrived and does not know or her father's death. Dr. Whitney also left a son, Albert O. Whitney, and four grandchildren. Dr. Whitney was a lineal descendant of Eli Whitney, the inventor of the cotton gin.
