Charles Hayden8 Whitney (David7, Isaac6, Abner5, Jonas4, Eleazer3, Thomas2, John1), son of David7 and Chloe H. (Farrington) Whitney, was born about May 1841, Brookline, MA, and died 31 Jan 1871, Brookline, MA, aged 29 years 8 months, of a bullet wound causing pulmonary consumption.[1]

He did not marry. While serving as a commissioned officer in Virginia with the 3rd North Carolina Colored Infantry, part of Wild's African Brigade, he was the father of one known child, Charles Henry9 Whitney, born 4 September 1864, by Mary Ann Banks, daughter of William and Matilda (-------) Banks, of Hanover Co., VA.[2]

He is listed in "Compiled Military Service Records of Volunteer Union Soldiers Who Served with the United States Colored Troops: Infantry Organizations, 36th through 40th (NARA Publications #M1933): Charles H. Whitney, age 22.

He is listed in "Individual Muster-In Roll of Co. --, 3rd Regiment North Carolina Colored Infantry." Aged 22 years, at Fortress Monroe, VA, 2 Jan 1864. Notes

  • Note on the middle name

A 1998 email from John Casey, grandson of Charles Henry9 Whitney, has been cited in a previous version of this page as evidence that Charles Hayden8 Whitney's middle name was Henry. This interpretation is incorrect. Casey's email, preserved in the WRG mailing list archive, does not assert the middle name Henry. Rather, Casey was researching his maternal grandfather Charles Henry Whitney and inquired whether a Charles Henry Whitney found in the 1850 Massachusetts census might be the father.[6] Casey was identifying a candidate, not asserting a known middle name. The Whitney identified by Casey in the 1850 Massachusetts census was a different individual. The actual Charles Hayden Whitney appears in the 1850 census in Elmore, Vermont, enumerated as Charles Whitney, aged 9, consistent with his Brookline birth and his parents and siblings presence in Vermont at that time.

The correct middle name is Hayden, established by the following evidence:

First, Hayden was the maiden surname of his maternal grandmother, consistent with the common 19th century practice of using a mother's family name as a middle name.

Second, and most compellingly, Charles Hayden Whitney's brother George Stephen Glover8 Whitney named his son Charles Hayden9 Whitney, born less than ten months after Charles Hayden Whitney's death in January 1871. It was a clear memorial naming using the full name of his recently deceased brother. The name Hayden has passed continuously in that collateral line. Robert Hayden Whitney, grandson of Charles Hayden9 Whitney, is the direct source confirming the name's continuous transmission in the family.

The Casey email is retained as a historical record of the early research inquiry.

  • Amended Marguerite Ann Gee reference

The following account was provided by Marguerite Ann Gee, granddaughter of Charles Henry9 Whitney and Edna May Rinehart, in August 2011, and represents an early statement of the family tradition connecting Charles Henry9 Whitney to Charles Hayden8 Whitney. Quoted as written: He fathered my Grandfather Charles Henry Whitney in 1864 with Mary Ann Banks in Hanover County Va. Where he recruited Mary Ann Banks father William L Banks for the USCT and he is my Great Grandfather (William Banks) Charles Henry Whitney (my grandfather) born in Hanover County Va on 4 Sept 1864 and died in 1948 in Clearwater Beach Pinellas Florida and is buried in the Military Cemetery.

The core conclusion that Charles Hayden Whitney fathered Charles Henry Whitney with Mary Ann Banks in Hanover County, Virginia in 1864 has since been confirmed through documentary research and autosomal DNA evidence. However, the specific claim that Charles Hayden Whitney recruited William Banks into the USCT is not supported by any record. The William Banks found in Company D, 37th U.S. Colored Troops, is a 22 year old from a different county in VA.

Mary Ann Banks' father, William Banks, was approximately 62 years old when the Civil War began and does not appear on any known 37th USCT rosters. Furthermore, the Southern Claims Commission file for William Banks places him on his Virginia farm during the war. The recruitment claim should therefore be treated as an error within the family tradition and should not be used as evidence for the Whitney-Banks family connection.
