Family:Whitney, David (1682-1768)
David3 Whitney (Joshua2, John1), son of Joshua2 and Abigail (Tarbell) Whitney,[1] was born about 1682, Groton, MA,[2] and died 1 Nov 1769, North Canaan, CT, aged 79 years, his will is dated Oct 27, 1769, and proved Dec 13, 1769.[3]
He married firstly, 20 Jan 1713, Groton, MA, Elizabeth Warren,[4] daughter of Jacob and Sarah (-----) Warren.[5] She was born 9 Jun 1693, Plainfield, CT,[6] and died 22 Feb 1767, North Canaan, CT, aged 74 years.[7]
He married secondly, 28 Jul 1767, West Hartford, CT, Prudence (Merrills) Sedgwick,[8] daughter of Abraham and Prudence (Kellogg) Merrills, and widow of Ebenezer Sedgwick (1695-1759).[9] She was born 22 Dec 1700, Hartford, CT,[10] and died 1 Feb 1793, Hartford, CT.[11]
On 17 Apr 1713 he was mentioned as a son in the will of his father.[12]
On 29 Sep 1730, he was co-executor with his sister Sarah Jewell of the will of her husband Nathaniel Jewell.[13]
"In 1740 he moved to Canaan, Conn., where he afterward resided and where he was an innkeeper, his tavern being the best known in that section of the state. He was a very active and influential man: was colonel of the militia and held other offices in the town."[14]
On 29 Nov 1745, he was the proprietors' clerk in Canaan.[15]
On 15 Oct 1751 he was mentioned as a brother in the will of his brother Joshua.[16]
Lt. Col. David Whitney of Canaan, CT, appears on a mulster roll of his own regiment during the French and Indian War (1755-1757).[17]
Estate of Doc'tr Solomon Williams of Salisbury (pp. 15-16). Adm'n granted 2 Feb 1758 to Oliver Partridge of Hatfield, Hamshire [sic] County, Mass. Inventory presented, taken by David Whitney, Samll. Bellows, and John Hutchinson: ...."[18]
On 29 Aug 1758, Col. Whitney was commander of a regiment at Lake George, NY.[19]
"His will is dated Oct 27, 1769, and proved Dec 13, 1769. He married twice, his second wife being Prudence, who was given one-third of the estate." He also mentioned the heirs of his daughters Esther Kingsbury, and Elizabeth Stanton, deceased. His son Tarbal Whitney was the executor.[20]
