Family:Whitney, George (1795-1825)

George⁷ Whitney (Silas⁶, Timothy⁵, Jonas⁴, Moses³, Richard², John¹), son of Silas⁶ and Mamre (Bradley) Whitney, was born 6 Jan 1795, Stockbridge, MA, and died 18 Dec 1825, Stockbridge, MA.

He married, 20 Jul 1816, Stockbridge, MA,^[1] or Jul 1817, Lebanon, NY, Pamela Fellowes Fenn, daughter of Nathan and Sarah (-----) Fenn. She was born 28 Feb 1794, Berlin, CT, and died 26 Jul 1872, Stockbridge, MA, aged 78 years 4 months 26 days, of paralysis.^[2]

George Whitney was born in Stockbridge, where he always resided. After finishing his education he studied law with Judge Byington, and afterward practiced with him at Stockbridge. He was one of the registers of probate, in Lenox, from 1823 to 1824, and later was elected a representative in the Massachusetts Legislature. He resided Stockbridge, MA.

Cornelia Whitney, b. 14 Jun 1822, Stockbridge, MA;[5] d. 10 Jan 1907, Stockbridge, MA, aged 84 years 6 months 26 days, of diabetes mellitus;[6] m. 12 Jul 1847, Major Joseph Cauncey Canning; resided Orange, NJ, and Stockbridge. He was b. 30 May 1821; d. 25 Sep 1868. Major Canning started in life as auditor in the hall of records of the city of New York, and left for a pursership on board the S.S. Baltic of the Collins line of steamers, the first to run between New York and Liverpool. When given up he returned to New York in business, and enlisted, when the war broke out, as paymaster on board the U.S.S. "Cambridge," afterward in same position on the "Mohican," and one of the Monitors. He was in the naval engagement at Hampton Roads between the "Merrimac" and "Monitor" as well as both battles of Fort Fisher; was honorably discharged at the end of the war, and entered government service on land in Washington, afterward in New York internal revenue office as deputy collector, where he was at the time of his death in 1887.
